The bartender was very kind and patient as I mulled through all the options, and she allowed me to taste test different drinks when I couldn't make a decision. The menu was a little difficult to read at first, but once you understand that colors represent different types of beers, that helps narrow a lot of options down. There were also plenty of snacks available for purchase, but some customers brought over pizza next door for the ultimate dinner combo! There was plenty of outdoor seating, but limited indoor seating so be sure to check the weather prior if you're staying a while. My first impression of Growler Grlz, just walking into the shop, was wow! Who would guess that a tiny interior would be so full of beer options?! However, after taking in the very FULL board of 42 drafts, it wasn't as easy as one two three. Although the staff was incredibly friendly and inviting, it took him a minimum of ten minutes to explain the color-coded, asterisk and check mark labels system and four pour options they have going on. This wouldn't be a problem regularly, but I couldn't help feeling after one even more overwhelmed by the overcomplicated system. However, aside from all this, if you're looking for a place to try several things, Growler Grlz offers flights of any five 4oz pours for $7.95 (some premium beers are $10.95 for a flight). The bartender also gave us samples of anything we were interested in. We tried five of their IPA's, the majority of which were more malt centered but I'm curious how often they're cleaning their lines. Growler Grlz aims at filling growlers, so they constantly have rotating taps. They offer the crazy low price of $2 drafts on Mondays for craft beer HOWEVER only 6 of the 42 drafts were on sale during our Monday visit. And although Growler Grlz focuses on drafts, they did have three bottles for sale in the shop: Canvas Series by Wicked Weed, Saints and Sinners by Big Boss and something by North Carolina Brewing Company out of Fort Brag. Overall, I'd return to the small space beer-centered space again (although be warned, if gets really noisy when busy), but I wouldn't make Growler Grlz a regular hangout place. read more

My friend and I brought our two dogs, who yes, bark at strangers who try to pet them without asking, but are otherwise perfectly friendly and have never been aggressive to any person or other dog. They barked (once) at a lady and the bartender told us we have to leave because it's "ruining his business". Meanwhile, the lady is sitting outside, right next to our dogs, happily drinking her beer and they are not barking at her anymore. Can someone please explain what exactly was ruined other than my day? Also want to point out I have brought my dog here twice before with no problems. It was very unpleasant, rude, and frankly the only business that has been "ruined" are that 2 customers who came here three times a week don't want to return. Yelp tells me that five stars means this place is as good as it gets, and I couldn't agree more. The staff are so knowledgeable, so friendly, and so customer-focused, that it only takes a few visits before they know your name and your favorite beer type. This is a great place to go if you're looking for small batch beers that you can't find in stores - some of the limited edition sours, stouts, and IPAs that just don't appear in stores will appear here. New beer people - don't be overwhelmed! 42 taps is a lot. You can choose your own flight, or get one of the staff to help you pick one/pick the whole flight for you. No beer snob credentials are required. Also - for gluten free folks, there is always at least one cider on the board, and a GF beer is available in bottles a lot of the time. If you have a wine person friend - there are several options available as well, so no one is left out. While the parking lot does get full at popular times, it's very easy to park in the shopping center across the street - there's a cross walk at the light. Bring your dinner/lunch (Randy's Pizza or Chubby's Tacos to name a few recommended places), your dog, sit on the patio, and make this your new local hangout. read more

My husband and I were in Durham recently and decided to go get a beer on a Saturday afternoon. We had heard good things about Growler Grlz, so we headed to go check it out. Wow! I was surprised how many beer options they could fit into a small space. They have 42 beers on tap and you can get them in half pints, pints, 32 and 64 oz growlers. They have a color coded system where the beers are grouped by style and the prices vary from generally around $5-$8 for a pint. I didn't look too thoroughly at the growler prices since we were there to have a beer on the spot, but from what I have heard, they are reasonable. The man working behind the counter was very knowledgeable on beer and spent a good amount of time walking us through the beers and explaining how their system works. He said we could sample almost all of the beers on the menu, so my husband and I each tried one. I was in the mood for a sour so I settled on one of those, made by Gibbs Hundred Brewing out of Greensboro, and my husband decided on Goose Island's Sofie (he also got to keep the glass that day, for free)! As I mentioned, the place is pretty small and we were able to get a table on the day we were there, but if the place was busy I could see seating being a problem. I think a lot of people come here to get beer to go. One more quick tip: if you like any of the pint glasses on display near the small collection of take home bottles, you can buy them for $1 each. I love Beer and Growler Grlz makes it easy for me to grab a growler of some of my favorite beers. When I saw they had one of my favorite Lonerider's on tap (that I did not even know was out) I went over as soon as I got off of work. I do wish they were a little closer to my house, but it was not too bad getting there and then home. As soon as I walked in I felt very welcome. Once the bartender found out it was my first time there she quickly explained everything to me. I knew what I wanted, but still took my time to take it all in, and I was amazed at how many different beers they had. They have 4 different choices of growlers that you can get, or if you like you can drink there with a couple of pints. I only got a half growler (32oz) but they obviously know what they are doing, as they even vacuum seal the growler for you so it will stay fresh. The bartenders are perhaps the friendliest and most accommodating I have ever encountered. So this review is somewhat in response to my most recent review about my disappointment with Sam's Bottle Shop. These ladies have got it goin' on! It's a tiny little shop but wow, is there a lot of variety. Secretly (well, not so secretly now), I'm not a beer fan but my husband definitely is. It was a bit problematic when I showed up to be wowed by the selection and a little perplexed about what to choose. The woman was really helpful, though, and offered some great suggestions. She even went in the back to print a list of what they had on tap. Overall, she went above and beyond to make sure my experience was positive. They have a great patio area and she said that people often bring over food from Randy's and City Beverage. I'm a huge fan of this concept: bring in any growler (or buy one there), and get it filled with any of a number of unique and interesting beers on taps. FORTY-TWO of them here. The selection is really fantastic and includes a balanced mix of North Carolina craft beers and others from all over the country. My most recent visit I picked up an Anderson Valley Blood Orange Gose that had a delicious sourness to it for $11.50 for a 32 oz growler. The staff is excellent. They're willing to give out a number of free samples of their beers before you commit, which I happily take advantage of (to the tune of like 8-10 samples). They're also well-equipped to offer good suggestions if you don't know where to start. I have to update that after going to a number of growler fill places in the area, this place is definitely the priciest of the bunch, which is why I have to give a slight downgrade to a still great 4 stars. Figure to spend typically about $10-13 for a 32 oz growler or $18-20 for a 64 oz. They do regularly put a couple beers on sale, some as cheap as $9 for a 64 oz growler fill for something more affordable. You can buy empty growlers there to fill up for $3-5. I think you have to frame the prices in the context of this place being a bar where the bartender will let you take a beer you like home. So you will pay a slight premium, but in exchange get an unmatched selection for a growler place. The place also offers flights of beer and pints, making for a great place to congregate with friends for drinks. The selection and prices beat most any bar. The place can be a little hard to find; it's across from the Woodcroft shopping center with the Chubby's, near City Beverage, and next to Randy's Pizza. I'll definitely be back for more. read more

I always like to stop in and grab a growler at Growler Grlz when I'm eating at City Bev around the corner. The staff is really helpful and is great at explaining everything your first time. You can either buy a growler from them or bring your own which they will sanitize. The sanitizing and filling process takes a while but it's a great excuse to grab a pint while you wait. The selection at Growler Grlz is huge and constantly changing (they didn't have any ciders when I was there but that could've changed). They also have select beers that are $2 pints or $9 growlers which is a great deal! My only complaint is the lack of seating. I have come to really enjoy this place. #1 it is within walking distance from my house. #2 they have their sh*t together. It's basically a growler (a glass container for beer if you are not in the know) filling station. More of a grab and go kind of place then invite 20 of your friends and stay awhile. With that said there are a few seats in the place to sit and enjoy a pint. You can bring one of your many empty growlers sitting at home and have them cleaned and filled there. I like to get a flight each time I go and they provide a pencil and paper so you can keep your beers straight. Just fill out what you want and hand it to the nice lady. Everything is written on a chalk board. Its color coded by type of beer which is nice when you are more partial to a certain kind. They also have the ABV, where it comes from and prices varying by amount you purchase i.e. pints, small, or large growlers. The prices can range from $12 on up so they hit every budget. They carry a lot of NC beers but also carry just as many out of state beers. There are rotating taps to say the least and you can follow them on Facebook to keep current or you can just go in and be pleasantly surprised. Every time I drive by the place is "busy" (its small) but they have plenty of friendly women on staff and I have never waited more than a couple of minutes to be helped. The only downside is the parking can be tight during nice weather (City Beverage shares the same lot). We like to order a pizza at Randy's next door and stop over here while we wait and take some delicious beer home with us to enjoy. I also find the set up convenient when you are heading to a friend's house and need to bring some beer. read more

For background: I love beer, and I like going to stores where the staff are helpful and friendly and eager to make recommendations. For me, this is the whole fun of beer--getting to talk to other people about it. When I first moved to the Triangle, Sam's Quik Shop was my go-to store. But, after awhile, I got sick of Sam's unfriendly, unhelpful staff who never seemed to take me seriously. So, I've been branching out and I'm so glad I found Growler Gyrlz I think it might be just the store I'm looking for. As soon as I walked in, someone helped me and explained exactly how it worked--how the beer list is color-coordinated, what size pours they offer to enjoying in store, and the sizes and prices of the various growlers. This was super helpful. I asked for a couple recommendations and they let me taste a little bit before I committed to a pint. And the staff were just generally very warm and friendly and you can tell they want to help you find something you'll like. So, A+ on staff, keep it up Growler Gyrlz.
