Thought I'd circle back and see if women are allowed back in after stepping outside yet, or if that's still reserved for the guys. The last time I visited, I was already inside, stepped out briefly to make a phone call, and was refused re-entry while several men walked right in without issue. Bonus points to the bouncer for telling my friends, "Your parents should be very proud of who they raised," because they had the audacity to point out that leaving a woman outside alone at night with no coat wasn't exactly appropriate. Still one of the most bizarre customer service experiences I've ever had. It's impressive how one employee can make people swear they'll never come back. Nothing says "great security staff" like refusing re-entry to a woman who was already inside while continuing to wave men through the door. Absolute 0/10. Up visiting family and was craving French Onion soup, haven't eaten here in probably 20 ish years, and could prob go another 20 after this visit. French onion soup broth and onions were great, burnt cheese taste not so much. Ordered the Cobb salad and it came with no turkey on it. Had to ask waitress for the turkey. Service was good, we were sat at a table quickly and drinks were always refilled quickly. Half side bar, half side restaurant. It was just ok.... Way better places locally unfortunately. read more

First time eating here was weekend after Christmas. Can't believe we have never eaten here before. Service was good, beers were cold and food was outstanding. Terrific menu. I stopped in Hops & Barleys the last time I visited my relatives in Luzerne. One of my family members recommended this place and after looking at reviews of restaurants in the area, it seemed to be a good one! This neighborhood pub seems to be the place to be in town. The bar area was packed when we got there so I was super surprised it didn't take long to get a table for 14 people. A few of us decided to grab a drink at the bar while we waited. The prices were reasonable and the bartenders had great energy. Once sat, it was just a waiting game. I was starving! Well, let me tell you, I came to the right place. The food was delicious and the portions were HUGE! I ordered the Hops Penne. It's made with a Cajun cream sauce and then topped with marinated grilled chicken. Came here last night with my boyfriend whilst on a mini business trip. It was fantastic! We only got a few snacks and beer, but I left very impressed. We got in around 6:30 on a Tuesday and the place was on its way to being super busy. The hostess and servers were running around at full speed, but made it a point to keep us updated as to when we'd get a table. When we got to our table we immediately ordered their local craft beers and shots to kick off our night out of town. When our wonderful server arrived with our drinks, we slowly order apps since we were in no rush to stuff our faces. After much consideration we ordered the following: Mac n cheese bites, Buffalo chicken cheese fries, Cajun shrimp and crocks of French onion soup. It was the perfect combination for a couple quick drinks while popping around an unknown land. Excellent service and friendly staff made this experience a great one! I started with the pretzel bread appetizer that was served with a side of mustard. The bread was soft,warm and the dip was really good! I have never tasted a dip like that. It was like a sweet spicy mustard. (It wasn't Dijon) My main entree was the Pierogies & Kielbasi ($10.25) . The Pierogies were stuffed with cheese and onions. I thought they tasted fine but I never had a Pierogie before so there is nothing I can compare them to. The Keilbasi was delicious! Hops & Barleys is half a sit down style restaurant, and the other half is a bar with seating and TVs. I've been on both sides, and I can happily say it's a great place top to bottom! The two sides are divided so you can enjoy lunch while a game is on without interruption, even the bathrooms are separate! The food is great, I've had a fair few items off of the menu and I've never been disappointed! On my last time going (the pictures correspond to this visit) the service was EXCEPTIONALLY GREAT. Let me set the scene, it was Sunday night around 6pm plus the Steelers were playing a night game so I expected a pretty full house. Always a good spot for lunch or dinner. The menu is huge and normally I find huge menus to be a bit scary bc the food usually isn't good. But here that's different. We've never had anything bad. They're always busy so expect a little bit of a wait if it's prime time. We got there around 8:30pm on a Saturday and were immediately seated in a booth in the dining area. If you sit in the bar it's super loud so we prefer the dining room. Either way the noise from the bar spills over into the dining room and both areas play different music so there's a lot going on. My boyfriend got a burger and I had the veggie boboli. They always use fresh veggies and not frozen on the boboli, which is what makes it so great. We also each had 3 beers. I'm not sure what size the beer mugs are, but I don't think they're 16oz. They seem on the smaller size and occasionally the mugs are warm, which makes the beer a little warm. None of our beer throughout dinner was as cold and we'd like it. Their booths desperately need to be updated. They're falling apart and have no support left. Great local bar that I go to every time I'm here visiting a friend. The burgers are great, and though I'm not a huge fan of wings, the ones here are delicious. The drinks are nice a cheap compared to what I'm used to, which is a plus! Decent selection of beers and booze, but nothing super fancy, which is just how it should be in a place like this. From what I hear, you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Very friendly and attentive service. There are lots of regulars, making it a fun atmosphere. Well I usually love this place, but this time around was not a great experience. My daughter ordered bbq bonless bites that had way too much sauce and the sauce was thick and tasted like ketchup. My cheesesteak had canned mushrooms, minute steak, and what tasted like boiled onions. Yuck. The mushrooms and onions could at least have been fried! I asked for everything on it and I expected peppers and lettuce and onion. In stead I got boiled onions, cold canned mushrooms, and marinara sauce. The marinara sauce tasted like canned sauce as well. I love a cheesy cheesteak and I barely tasted cheese on this one. I was actually searching through my sandwhich with a fork to look for cheese and I couldnt find any. I think they may have forgot to put cheese! My son loved his burger. It was a Hawaiian burger with a pineapple on it. It looked good and he made me jealous as he ate it and I sat at the table trying to pick all the steamed onions and rubber mushrooms off. My husband gets the buffalo chicken boboli almost everytime we come here and he loves it. It did look good. He felt so bad for me eating my cheeseless cheesesteak that he was trying to give me some of his boboli. I asked for a beer with my iced tea and the beer never came. So next time I saw the waitress I reminded her and she brought it to me right in time to choke it down with my food. I was hoping to enjoy it slowly before eating. My daughter and i tried to switch our horrible plates and we both agreed with eachother that the boneless bites and cheesesteak were gross. Came by last night just for a drink and wow! It was absolutely packed on Friday night. Plus you can't beat the happy hour prices. Popped by again today for dinner because I was too lazy to cook. There's two separate sections, one more dining friendly and the other more bar like. The atmosphere is great, the staff is super nice and friendly. Nothing really beats that. Decided on the Yuengling battered haddock. Crispy outside, thin layer of batter with giant pieces of fish. The mashed potatoes were a little gluey but still good. Great place for dinner or just snack on bar food. I used to live in the Valley, and came here often the first few years they were open. Almost always eat here when I come home to visit. Amazingly, the menu hasn't changed, in 25 years. That's a great testament to the great selection. Best thing on the menu in my opinion, are the potato skins. You get to choose your meat and cheeses.
