We were patients for about 5 years. in June of last year, I contacted their office by phone to cancel all our family appointments for the rest of the year as we were changing insurance providers, and the new coverage would not be in effect until the following January. Then out-of-the-blue in the fall, I received an automated call that "demanded I pay my outstanding balance or our appointment for my son would be canceled". I contacted the office and was told they charged us $50 for a missed appointment. Wait a minute...I explained we canceled all future dates for the remainder of the year, months ago. Apparently someone on their end 'forgot' to remove one when we had mass-canceled, and now were being billed for a missed appointment--their error. I went back and forth with office person Leeann by phone and emails. In each, she was rude, refused to reason or admit to any mistake on their part. I even asked her more than once; what reason would we have to cancel all future upcoming appointments EXCEPT the one in question--she could not or refused to understand--and would rather hold firm and collect the fabricated $50 charge than admit to THEIR error. She then tried to "guilt' me saying she would "do me a favor" and remove the charge. Favor? It was their scheduling error to begin with. What I expected and never received was an apology-- not a "favor". I suppose her attempt for money grab--coupled with her apparent need to 'win"-- was far more important to her than the long-customer loyalty we had with them. In fact, after all that, when we made the decision to change dentists, we even had a problem with her forwarding our dental records to be transferred to our new dentist--which she claims she forwarded--and our new dentist never received until after a couple more phone conversations to finally get that done. We never received an apology from her or the office. (not that I believe it would have been sincere anyway). Sad, really, that the lifetime future value of our family is lost to them over a rude, unprofessional and immature office helper--so entrenched on 'winning' over a $50 billing-- a billing that we never owed in the first place. Again, the hygienists and dentists were always very nice--this is not about them, but rather about the 'face' of the firm-- a front-of-house hired help that apparently does not understand the concept of customer life-time value. I went in for a cleaning, xray, general exam and was in and out in 30 minutes. When I didn't have insurance, I had a cracked tooth pulled for $180. It felt like I didn't get enough anesthetic, but I sure felt better when the tooth was gone. Later, I had a gum infection, and after a $55 visit, I was given a few shots and a prescription that worked great. The office is new, comfortable, and definitely the place to try if you hate or tend to avoid the dentist.

The person at the front desk (I think her name was Niki) was very helpful when I was filling out my forms and explained to me what was covered through my UofM grad student insurance, along with other logistics related things. I'm usually not good with paperwork, so her help was very much appreciated! After the initial examination, I learned that I had a filling that came loose and some minor gingivitis (which was expected since my teeth have been bothering me for a while now), and Dr. Ma explained her treatment plan for me in a way that I could actually understand. I should mention that I usually get very anxious when it comes to dentists, but Dr. Ma's gentle approach helped alleviate some of that anxiety. Oh yeah, and the hygienist was super thorough. Like, it felt like she got to parts of my mouth that I didn't even know existed. Quick Edit: my boyfriend recently went to Choice Dental after I pestered him about his dental health situation. He's just as weary of dentists as I am, so I was really relieved when he told me that he had a good experience with Dr. Kim. And when he says anything positive about any kind of doctor, he REALLY sincerely means it. So all in all I'd highly recommend Choice Dental to anyone looking for a dentist in the Ann Arbor area.

And everytime you'd go, different dentist. Nice. So, when I changed jobs, my wife and I looked for a new dentist. Little researcher that she is, she found Dr. Choi at Choice Dental, which is on South Main just across from the stadium in that office building with the parking underneath. Not only is the office pleasant and the staff very friendly and competant, but the service is just outstanding. Everytime I'd turn around, he'd have something new and techy, from the tiny camera he used to take pics of my teeth so I could see what was going on to the program he used to show my how my teeth were going to move. Better yet, when I went for my cleaning, the DENTIST did the whole cleaning. Not a 2 minute consult. The WHOLE cleaning. Long story short, this dentist will make you feel like you're back in time, with a dentist who's good at what he does and actually gives a damn about you. Old school. During my visit, there was confusion about my X-rays, and I was told that a tooth was missing when it clearly was not. Instead of taking the time to properly review the information or resolve the issue professionally, the situation turned into an argument. What made things worse was the behavior of the office manager, who was extremely disrespectful during the conversation. Rather than addressing my concerns calmly or trying to correct the mistake, she hung up the phone on me, which I found very unprofessional. Overall, the staff appeared confused and not on the same page, and it felt like no one really knew what was going on. Communication between the team and with patients needs serious improvement. I would not recommend this office based on my experience. Patients deserve clear information, respectful communication, and professionalism -- unfortunately, that was not what I received here.

But it left me scrambling to find someone new. I asked in a local Facebook group and got recommended to check out here. When I called to go through the insurance check and book an appointment, the scheduler was super helpful and friendly. I had to wait ~2-3 months but I didn't mind. They offered me waitlist spot in case of any cancellations. It never happened, but I do like that it's an option. I finally went, super wary of a new place and a new dentist. Immediately everyone was so friendly it put my anxious self at ease a bit. The hygienist was super sweet and very understanding. Made sure to keep me comfortable. I had cracks on the side of my mouth from overly dry skin and she was so sweet in making sure she was careful not to split them open and make them bleed. She listened to me and made me feel heard. The dentist himself was only in for a bit as I was just there for xrays and a cleaning. I had no issues, so we didn't interact much. But I have nothing bad to say about him either. This is definitely my new dentist for the long term.

All three hygienists I have seen there have been very gentle and careful. My teeth do not hurt at all after cleaning or other procedures. They do just fine with a nervous nellie like me and yet still manage to remove any necessary plaque or other grossness and make my teeth all fresh and pretty. Prior to this I had a dentist who filled the wrong tooth and I ended up not going for awhile after. Dr Berman is careful and using him I have not had any further problems with my teeth, no fillings, nada. I really trust him which I needed after my prior bad experience. I have moved from my hometown but even with it less convenient for me, I am willing to make the drive.
