This is an AMAZING School! All three of our kids go here, we are extremely happy with the results we are seeing. Our kids enjoy going to school, learning. The teachers and staff are the extremely supportive of all the kids. This is a school I really wanted to believe in, but unfortunately, their motto of no place for hate is all rhetoric and only beneficial to SOME children; mostly females. As a boy Mom it's been very disappointing.. repeat bullying and the girls are held to a different standard of conduct , they are generally nasty, and get away with it. Unfortunately there is a revolving door of teachers. Some of them are really not great. There are some standout teachers. Mr.Harank was amazing. Mrs Cardenas ,Ms Abc, but the rest are really not great. What was most shocking was the Incredible bias against boys. Nutritionally the school lunch program options are straight up garbage/ fast food. Aesthetically ? There's a general vibe and look of penitentiary at the school. The kids can't play on beautiful field at recess. They walk in rings. They eat on concrete like prisoners. It's super unattractive to the eye. The vibe and motivation is all about grades and testing, not about joy. Such a shame . I would say the school is OK up until about third grade and then you should look elsewhere. Starting off with the positive. This school has mostly nice teachers. I have gone to this school for about 5 years and have had plenty of nice teachers. The courtyards for middle school and high school are well-sized, being able to hold hundreds of kids for lunchtime relatively easily. Another good thing is the dress code, or lack thereof. No uniform is needed to go to this school, and the students are allowed to wear school-appropriate clothes. That is about all I have to say that is nice. One thing I have noticed about the teachers is there is a HEAVY gender bias towards girls. I have seen many girls in my classes get away with things that would get guys detention or even suspended, while the girls get off scot-free. Second, there are many teachers that are downright terrible. From teaching us terrible, to punishing us for their mistakes, to drowning us in homework, some teachers go above and beyond to make us suffer. I just started 3rd quarter of school, and this is the most homework I have had. For the past TWO WEEKS STRAIGHT I HAVE HAD 4+ HOURS OF HOMEWORK, INCLUDING WEEKENDS. THIS IS BEYOND STUPID. Moving on from the teachers, the bathrooms are disgusting. The sinks are dirty, the soap dispensers are almost always either empty, broken, or just straight-up gone. There was even a time when the stall wall FELL OFF, and a toilet was detached from the wall, flooding the bathrooms. I have also been stopped from using the bathroom even when the teachers were not teaching anyone and it was worktime for the students. Most teachers don't treat us our age, making us feel like we are incompetent or much younger than we actually are. read more

Some good things about the school are the dress codes, and some of the teachers are nice, but overall, I don't like the school. I have gone here for 9 years and every year I had a teacher that treated me horribly and had a terrible bias towards some students. The school doesn't offer much extracurricular, and if I were to try to make a club (which the school says you can do) I have to wait months to get anything back, if at all. Teachers assign homework very sporadically, giving no homework one night, and then giving 4 hours of homework the next day. Also, a lot of the teachers are very sexist. I will have a group of girls talking when the teacher is, but then I ask someone one question (I am a male) and they will yell at me. The bathrooms are disgusting, and stall doors are taken off all the time and/or broken, and one time, someone just stole the soap dispenser and a toilet. Overall, my 9 years here have been not great, but there are some highlights. read more

My daughter goes here and we absolutely love it. In-fact, everyone we have talked to who goes here raves about what an amazing school this is. My daughter and I did a lot of moving and she has been to many schools already in her life. Horizon is by far the most comprehensive school she has attended. If you are advanced in a certain area, you will be in a class with older kids who are at your level. If you need help with a subject, you won't be left behind, you will get mandatory extra help with that subject. I can't say enough about Horizon, but be forewarned there is a waiting list and I know people who have had their kids on the list for years. It's worth the wait once you get a child in though. read more

I have 2 teens enrolled at Horizon Honors. They are appropriately challenged academically. They both like their school experience. The chorale, music, and theater programs are very good considering the smaller school size. There are plenty of extracurricular activities and sports. The best feature is that the teachers know the students by name, and genuinely care about their progress. They are available for questions and homework help. Much of the class schedule mimics college classes every other day, except for math which meets daily. There is a limited number of duel-enrollment college-credit classes offered. The communications to parents and students is exceptional... And the office staff is extremely helpful. read more

In all honesty I don't have kids that go here but I have relatives that do and they love it. I know they researched every option in town and decided on this school. The standards are high and they don't let kids get away with slacking. Seem to really work to bring out each child's potential. read more

My kids transferred from Valley Christian to Horizon Honors and have never been happier. The academics are excellent. The teachers are highly qualified and are readily available to work with their students. The coaching staff is experienced and very knowledgeable and the administration and front office are warm, ready to help and made the transition seamless. We are a new family this year, and are thrilled with Horizon! We have kids in both the middle school and high school. Horizon offers an academically challenging curriculum, full arts program, and full sports program, all provided in a supportive community. Another great feature, is that schedules are organized with a lab block, which enables students to complete most of their homework. This is a perfect environment for kids that want a small school environment with a variety of opportunities with which to engage, explore and learn! read more

All of our children have attended Horizon Honors high school and we couldn't be more pleased with the well-rounded education they have received. The Horizon community is small enough for teachers and administrators to get to know each student and family. The strong academic program is paired with many extracurricular clubs and sports -- our daughters played soccer for the first time in high school and loved it! The community is very welcoming and each child is encouraged to "believe, learn, dream and dare" to follow their passion. It's like private school for the price of public school! read more

We have been at Horizon for 9 years. My daughters transitioned from a local Montessori at 1st and 5th grades. Right now, one is a sophomore at NAU (on a full merit scholarship) and the other a 10th grader at Horizon Honors High School. We have been very happy here at Horizon. As a parent, I am so happy to walk in the office and have the office staff know who I am, and know who my children are. They encourage parental involvement from elementary all the way through high school. During their time in elementary, they were given the opportunities to have music and PE daily. They developed friendships and were taught how to prioritize, work in groups, problem solve and speak in front of an assembly of their peers. Both participated in student government and were selected as student ambassadors. The student ambassadors give the new families tours of the school. I remember how impressed I was when we first toured Horizon and how articulate the students were. My children have participated in the choir and performing arts departments, and this year, my 10th grader decided to give team sports a try. While she had never been in sports before, she was encouraged to sign up and give it her best. And she did! Her team mates and coaches were very welcoming. As a family, we have really enjoyed participating in the various sporting events to cheer the teams on. Our varsity teams rival many other schools and we have several students who have received sports scholarships to college. My older daughter felt the curriculum challenged her and kept her interested. She was rewarded by receiving multiple scholarships and is now attending NAU with a full tuition merit scholarship. I have always found the teachers open to listening about my concerns and very open to my advice on how best to work with my children. As parents, we are encouraged to have open communication with the teachers and have scheduled conferences 5 times a year (more if necessary). When reaching out to any of the staff, I can usually get in to see them with in a day or two. While Horizon is a "small community", they are encouraged to be big thinkers. The students are help each other and there really isn't any bullying. Both my daughters found themselves to be mentors to not only their peers, but the younger students in the elementary school as well. If you want a "small school environment" were each student is valued and listened to, Horizon really is the place for your family. read more

I went here for 9 years before switching to public school. It's not great like everyone thinks! There's so much drama because its so small and the academics were not even close to as good as my public school. The teachers don't encourage students and it's way to strict (which is saying a lot since my public school had security and didn't allow cell phones). It's great for elementary, but don't force your kids from 5th grade and up. read more
