very disappointed with the services of Horizon Landscaping. i left a few voice mails...but no one returned my calls. I had to call again and complained to the receptionist about the luck of respect to return a call. Finally, Chris, sales person, called back and we made an appointment which he failed to show up. I called the company and I was advised that he is in a meeting . 1H and 10 minutes later he called me to tell me he is running late and he will be able to make it in about 25 minutes. he was arrogant, spoke with attitude and non apologetic. We recently purchased a home in Bergen County NJ and the previous owner let their landscaping go so a lot of work needed to be done. Talked with a few different companies, and ended up going with Horizon because I liked Chris T's approach to the design (asked lots of questions and made sure we were getting what we wanted vs. what he thought) and he had a great attention to detail. Scheduling took a bit longer than we wanted since they were busy, but it was worth the wait. The crew that was on our site was AMAZING - we had the same guys for the whole project and they were quick, professional, and respectful. The first phase of the work went quick and even when snags were hit or we changed the plans on the guys, they were accommodating and quick to adjust. The best part though, the customer service after the work had been complete. We had a few minor things that needed adjustments and small changes we wanted after the work was done and the team has been here within a day to fix / address. Truly amazed by the customer service and professionalism. I cannot wait to pick the work back up next spring with the team. read more

After 3 years of service, I just received a letter from Horizon declining to continue to provide our landscaping needs in the future. The letter says this is "strictly a business decision," implying, I suppose, that it is nothing personal. I had intended to review Horizon some time ago, but our firing prompts me to write this review now. With the benefit of some hindsight and no residual hard feelings toward this company or its employees, here's what I think. Horizon is pricey. I initially felt that the quality justified the cost. I'm not sure that I feel that way anymore, as the quality of the service steadily declined over time, and the prices increased. Horizon is reasonably local to us, just a couple of towns away, but they are a small company and not one of the "regulars" here. I always felt that it was a hassle for them to service our account because they don't do our neighbors and we are a small account. In business there are economies of scale -- I get that -- and we just did not scale up for them. Our first year of service was great. We had Horizon do everything except cut the lawn, which I do myself. I'm fussy and like my landscape just so. Horizon applied chemicals, trimmed my arborvitae and other trees, did Spring and Fall cleanups, reseeding, mulch, etc. They even handled cuts when we were away on vacation. I was quite pleased. The last two years -- not so much. Ed the manager (who is always available by telephone and a very decent guy -- kudos to him) blamed the weather for just about everything, including the timeliness of the service, the condition of my lawn -- even price increases. I know weather plays a big role in how well your landscape looks, but geez, my neighbors UNSERVICED grass looked better and greener than mine this past summer -- with fewer weeds. Go figure. What really turned me off in the end was being double billed for one service (I'm willing to chalk it up to a billing mistake) and not being offered a discount for Horizon's delay in providing service (which Ed acknowledged was entirely Horizon's fault). This delay damaged my lawn. I asked for a discount and was just ignored. I took the discount anyway, and suspect my action contributed to our firing. Ed is knowledgeable about landscapes and his people are conscientious when they do show up. That said, I didn't hire them to be my friends. I recommended Horizon to many of my neighbors. They admire my landscape because I spend many hours each week in the yard tweaking it myself. Perhaps they assumed Horizon is responsible for all of it. I dunno. This latest experience with Horizon confirms what I have ignored over many years. With landscapers, its best to hire one of the local companies that scales up and handles most of your neighbors, or do it yourself. Top Tip: If you choose Horizon you will get a straight up contract in the mail for the season, and it is all cash and carry -- no credit cards. Also, if you choose to stagger your payments to coincide with service calls (as I did), make sure the charges add up to your contract price. Finally, call Ed with questions or problems. He knows his stuff and has always been available to answer my pesky questions. read more

In 2018 Horizon revamped our entire backyard. They put together a design for landscaping and a patio, working with us and accommodating our designer's suggestions as well. They also redid our sprinkler system and put lighting in. This season the yard has fully grown in (it's layered to perfectly obscure and provide privacy from neighbors) and looks phenomenal. Everyone who comes over comments on how beautiful it looks day or lit up at night. It literally is our own private oasis and we love to spend time outside as much as we can when the weather is good to enjoy it. Thank you Horizon for a beautiful backyard makeover! read more

I'm giving these guys a 2 because their initial work was good. However, a bush died a short time afterward. They replaced it. Died again in 3 more months and they said their policy is to only replace once--then stopped returning our emails!?! 50k job and a sprinkler contract (which we will be cancelling , thank you) and they can't do the right thing? There are MANY other options out there who do equal or better work, at a better price---and will stand behind their work. And mind you, they were not easy to deal with--at all-throughout the main building process either. Lot's of excuses, mistakes and chasing that needed to occur. We employed Horizon for a new sprinkler system. They provided more zones and more sprays without charging any additional money. The staff were friendly and hard working. My friend said yes and that her mother who is in real estate recommends this service to her clients because of the quality of their work. As a result of this reference we hired Horizon. Bottom line, we are extremely happy with the results of the landscaping work. We could not have asked for or dealt with a better company. Horizon is simply the best...Gary has great communication skills...whenever I contact him, he gets back "right away." We had about 10 landscaping companies contacted for a backyard project. Horizon was the only one that immediately came out and followed up with us as promised. So we went with them also because the design made sense and the quote was reasonable. Tim, our landscaper, was very responsive, always on top of it and he made sure we were informed of the next steps. Since we had quite a few subcontractors (fence, electric, carpenter) he worked out schedules with them so it would be seamlessly fitting into the project. We are in the final stages of the project and so far we have no complaints. read more

We used Horizon for a patio and Fireplace. However they were a disappointment and here is why; 1. The project ended up taking 3 times the time frame they promised. 2. Where we ask for a ramp they put steps 3. We asked for a specific perimeter so that it would not be close to our neighbors and they went over it by a foot. 4. The fireplace was suppose to have a curve seating, but because they did not use the right patio perimeter they could not get it to wrap around AT ALL 5. The fireplace was suppose to have a mantle - but they did not know how to do it 6. They placed a blue stone on top of the fireplace, and came back to say it would cost EXTRA! and came back at night to remove it! 7. They did not finish cementing the fireplace joints read more

We moved from a condo to our first "house" and one of the biggest surprises we encountered was how expensive and overwhelming the landscaping portion would be. Granted, we had a LOT of work to do including two rock walls, installing sprinklers in the front and back yards, redesigning the front landscape, and redesigning most of our backyard. We got quotes from three companies total and used each quote as a almost a mini "interview" - specifically, we told each company what we were looking for and let them come back to us with their own proposal and quote (we purposely didn't share other quotes). Tim Fox at Horizon Landscape was prompt, thorough, listened to what my vision was and delivered a design and quote that was by far the most aligned with what we wanted. Once we decided to moved forward, his team worked through some of the worst heat of the summer and most importantly, executed everything above my already high expectation. On top of that, we decided to add/change an aspect of the original design halfway through the project and Tim got me a new quote and made it work out logistically seamlessly. Since they finished the work, they've had managers and maintenance crew constantly checking in to see that everything was settling correctly, and fixing any issues they come across (for example, we had a lot of rain which washed some of the grass seed into our planting bed, and they fixed that and replanted the grass seed in the washed out area). This showed me that they have a lot of pride in their work and they're smart enough to realize that because of this positive experience, we're going to use them for the MANY additional projects we have in the future, and I've already referred them to two family members within a week... read more

This is our second year contracting Horizon for lawn care and irrigation maintenance and we're still 100% satisfied with their service, communication and professionalism provided. From our experience, we would not hesitate in recommending Horizon. Although pricing is a bit higher than other landscaping companies, you won't be dealing with people not showing up when an appt. is made. They stand by their lawn care service and make sure your satisfied, and any time we have contacted the office we're always greeted with professionalism and a warm hello, so paying a little higher price is worth it. In July of 2016, Horizon landscaping transformed our backyard. They came out immediately to hear about what we wanted and provided beautiful and detailed plans very quickly. They removed our existing deck and built us a 3 level paver patio with a wrap around seating wall and a separate gas fire pit area as well. They installed an outside TV and helped with the installation of a new hot tub. They did our landscape lighting and did some needed updates to our sprinkler system too. Just completed large project to improve drainage, plant new trees and bushes, and remove old tree roots. Property looks great! Last year they created an area for our new trampoline in back which also looks great and has worked very well for us. We believe that the unexpected flaws in the original design are a result of the lack of expertise in the area. The design was not well thought out by your engineers. We hired you for that reason. We wanted the drainage issue addressed and instead the result of your work caused more problems, and you were asking more money for us to put out to fix the problems you created. We did not have water flowing into our basement, but as a result of the grading you did on the property, to this day we have water in the basement even after hiring another company to waterproof the basement. Your company claims to be experts in landscaping, and we expected that the experts would anticipate the result of what will happen if you grade land in a certain way. Additionally, the original phases for our property were.. 1. to fix the grading and drainage issues.. 2.. expand patio and build a pavilion.. 3.. pool. The later phases had nothing to do with drainage issues.. the first phase was supposed to take care of that. read more

We've had Horizon maintain our sprinklers and outdoor lighting for the past two years. Their prices are reasonable and their technicians are nice guys who are knowledgeable about lighting upgrades.
