It is not authentic Ecuadorian Cuisine, it is "lazy" Ecuadorian food the fries are frozen fries, hotdogs in Chaulafan rice instead of beef or pork, and their Hornado dish is insipid and lacks presentation. Service is fine the young ladies are sweethearts. Lastly the environment is not of an Ecuadorian restaurant other than the pictures on the wall of Ecuadorian cities it looks like a dinner from the 80s. I do not recommend if looking for authentic Ecuadorian food. Putting effort into preparing an authentic dish would make this place much more appealing. read more

I am just starting to learn about Ecuatorian food. I feel like people want to group this with Mexican food and Colombian, and while there are some similarities, it is definitely a distinctly different cuisine. For starters: Corn. Corn is essential at Hornado. The humita (sweet tamale) was unmistakably made from corn. Delicious corn. So different than what I'm used to. Sweet, with lots of mashed corn in there and other stuffs to fill in the gaps. Instead of rice, most of the dishes sit on a bed of hominy - which is a big and white variety of corn. There isn't much flavor to it, but it compliments the salty meats they put on top. Ceviche was gentle and sweet and cooked with heat rather than acidity (the Ecuatorian method). 6 of us split the mixto of shrimp, tuna, white fish and shellfish. I could have easily split it with my left and right hands alone as a main course. Next time I would consider encebollado, but it would be hard to resist what I ordered this time. The namesake dish is roast pork over the hominy with some soft, rich yellow corn cakes. The pork was salty, a little smoky, and delicious. This is probably my favorite dish of all-time and it was great here. The skin was thin and crispy and red - very edible. I almost saved half for dinner the next night, but as I started picking at what was left, it was like an avalanche and minutes later only a few hominy kernels were left when the fluent-in-English waiter came back. None of our main courses were spicy, but on the table was a homemade green salsa. It was cool, a bit sweet and garlicky but also had some heat to it. By the end of the meal, the once full cup was empty. It was really good! Midway through the meal, I happened to pass by the kitchen during the meal. I saw a full pig with it's head on. My heart skipped a beat, 'Is this love?' Charrasco marinado (which Steve M. goes more into depth with) was REALLY interesting. It was a tender steak about half-inch thick topped with all sorts of seafood. I'm totally not used to combining steak with fish sauces, but woahhh, this was strange... and good. There were couples and a few large and medium sized families eating there that Sunday night. There is a growing Ecuadorian population in Jackson Heights, and this is only one of the many homestyle restaurants catering to this group of people... and others lucky enough to walk in the door. When in Queens, I have to get proper Ecuadorean food and stumbled upon this gem with my family. The menu had a lot of typical Ecuadorean dishes and it was hard to choose. So of course I ordered la Bandera Ecuatoriana, which has a little bit of everything. Succulent hornado, guatita, ceviche, mote and rice with avocado. I also ordered a quimbolito which I could have done with out. Although the food was delicious, the service was not so good. It took a while before someone came over to the table, and we were the first people in the restaurant at the time, when the server came, she wasn't very friendly. I am going to speak for all Filipinos when I say that we take our pork seriously. Pork is a huge part of our cuisine. So when I ordered the Hornado at Hornado Ecuatoriano, I was really surprised at how similar it was to the Filipino version lechon. Also, I found it to be better. It tasted fresh, tender, not dry and it needed no sauce (Mang Tomas or liver). And the skin? Crispy with a thin layer of fat. Just how I like it. The Hornado came with two corn cakes, hominy, and salad. Everything was bland compared to the pork but it was necessary to counteract the saltiness of the roast pork. The hominy had an interesting texture to it. Like I said, it was completely bland but it was strong and I grew to like chewing the thick starch. I prefer it over white rice anyway. I liked the corn cakes and the plain lettuce and tomato slices were really refreshing. Our appetizer of potatoes, fries and steak came with a spicy sauce. The spicy sauce was amazing and I put some of it on my entree but it didn't need much of it, if any at all. It was nice to just concentrate on the roast pork. I came to Hornado Ecuatoriano with a group of more than twenty. All of us found something we liked and the service was pretty good considering we had one waitress for all of us. She even explained what every dish was. Whether someone got seafood soup, breaded chicken, blood sausage or shrimp in garlic sauce, there were no leftovers. I devoured my plate. The restaurant decor is nothing to rave about. It's very clean and it's a typical Jackson Heights restaurant (unknown but excellent and authentic). There were holiday decorations still up from Valentine's Day. There is a small bar available and they served some of our group hot shots which were sweet and toasty. From lean white meat, to bits of fatty goodness, all topped off with a few scraps of fried pork skin -- salted. crackly. heaven. Combined with a side of puffed jumbo white corn, Ecuadorian style chimichurri, potato cakes, and lime wedges, its a meal that will seriously overwhelm your taste buds. Don't get me wrong, nothing is fairly elaborate at Hornado Ecuatoriano. It's simple Latin food, in a family-style cafeteria restaurant. WWF wrestling streaming on a TV projector in the background, old men slurping fish stews at the bar, waitresses refusing to speak any English to the lonely non-hispanohablante, children getting roudy. I like this place. Other dishes are simple and delicious. Humita was a unique take on a tamal, except the corn meal inside was way sweeter and creamier than I had ever tasted. Texture was also good, as it was not pulverized into a masa format, but rather it seemed like it was hand crushed by a pestle and mortar (perhaps this is just my fetishized delusion). Shrimp ceviche lives up to the hype. Clean, balanced flavors of onion, cilantro, and lime, all cradling tender pieces of jumbo shrimp. Tostones and other side dishes are standard, but nice accompaniments. Flavors seem way authentic and humble here, but some of the dishes could use a little bit more spice. Perhaps this is the Indian in me speaking, but I went through the whole side dish of spicy chimichurri (the only picante element of my meal), and I could've definitely housed down another two servings. Ecuadorian food via food trucks on Junction/Roosevelt also serve up these same classics, although there food seems to be a bit spicier (albeit arguably less hygenic and standing-room-only). For a nice Ecuadorian dining experience, I'll come back to Hornado. I am excited to explore other items on the menu, now that I have been endoctrinated by the cult of the hornado. read more

Hornado Ecuatoriano is a favorite of mine for ceviche. I usually order the shrimp ceviche, but on another occasion we opted for the mixto. The shocking dark color of this ceviche was due to the conch that floated around along with the shrimp. Despite its muddy appearance, we loved the limey liquid and every drop was consumed. Tostones on the side helped soak up the last remnants from the bowl. My parents pepped up with café con leche that they claimed to be exceptional. I opted instead for a glass of chicha, the taste of slight fermentation just does it for me. read more

We were guided to this place by our Eduadorian friends from LI. They are on Roosevelt Ave with a pay lot a block away which was a convenience and kept the car safe. The Hornado and Fritata, two pork dishes were authentic and delicious. the meat was juicy and the skin crisp...made great eating. We had sweet plaintains and Tostones as sides...One thing that is disappointing...Cuy is a national dish in Ecuador and Peru and we couldnt find a restaurant that served it. Just so happened to park in front of this little jewel during a rain storm. My mother and I were looking for something with a Spanish flavor and this restaurant seemed to be a good choice. Of course, being in Jackson Heights, there's no shortage of selection. Interior is very clean, not much in the way of Ecuadorian decoration (save for some flags, paintings, etc) but nothing shabby either. Bathroom is clean too, which should be a good indicator of the kitchen as well. I ordered the grilled pork with rice and my mom ordered the mixed seafood with rice. Also decided to have a manzana (apple) soda. Price wise, it's not the cheap, quick meal type of place but the portions are pretty generous in my opinion. $40 took care of everything, including tip. My dish had two grilled pork chops, with nice burned sear marks on it. Can't forget the huge half of plantain, flavored white rice, a small portion of salad, red beans and a delicious half of a fresh avocado. Pork chops had a slight burnt flavor from the sear marks. Not my thing, but I know people who love that burnt, well done taste. Tasty nonetheless. Beans and rice were delicious and rich in flavor. I don't usually like to eat plantain but it was cooked well and I couldn't resist finishing the whole meal. My mom's dish was really fantastic. Mixed seafood consists of two small crab arms, squid, shrimp, 2 medium sized clams and some mussels. Rice was reddish and consistency similar to that of jambalaya. The flavor of the rice was really amazing, had a deep, rich seafood flavor. Absolutely delicious. Would definitely order for myself again. Overall, the meal was quite enjoyable. The wait time was slightly long for what seemed to be a non-very-busy evening. Would have been nice to have a salad/bread/soup or something during the wait but nothing serious. I would definitely come back here and try the arroz con pollo, which I saw after I placed my order. Gotta have the Spanish style chicken with rice dish! I guess this restaurant specializes in food from the countryside (sierra) because I was less than impressed by the ceviche. I ordered a side of rice (it doesn't come with anything, not even maiz tostado) which came cold. The aji (hot sauce) I ordered never came and the waitress was no where to be seen for five minutes so I went to the kitchen and ordered it myself. She then came out with the aji and maiz tostado. The ceviche itself was nothing special - the shrimp was overcooked to the point where I had difficulty cutting it with a knife. The sauce was bland, but I fixed it up with the delicious aji and lots of lime juice. My first taste of Ecuadorian cuisine and I must say that I was pleased. Went with a large group and we ordered a ton of food. The humitas were pretty tasty, something akin to an arepa. The calamari was good too. Not sure what we ordered, but there was steak and chicken and seafood and it was all very good, but my favorite was the arroz con pollo (yeah, I know, not uniquely Ecuadorian). No room for dessert. Everything in this place is precooked and served when you order it. Considering this the food is decent. The chairs are wobbly as well as the tables, it makes it very uncomfortable to eat. I order salchipapas which is basically french fries and a frankfur, it took a total of 30 mins, and i got it after everyone else on my table. Keep in mind they actually ordered real food. My "dish" medicore. A side dish i order moracho con pan, a typical drink with a peice of bread was missing 50% of the dish, the bread; apparently they ran out of bread.
