I hate giving bad reviews to places I used to enjoy but management here needs to do something about whose up front. I don't know if they understand the gravity of denying people with disabilities. This is America not Colombia. I say this as a fellow Colombian who understands that when people don't like something they choose to make things up. Especially about animals. I suffer from hearing loss and always have my service dog in case of emergency. Today we walked in here for a quick meal and my small pup in his bag. The lady in the front claimed that my service dog ID was inadequate because I didn't have the one with his photo on it. I had all the other paperwork but due to not having the photo she chose to not only deny my entry but belittle my disability. If I were management I would fire her immediately. We were greeted and then sat, nicely as we were indecisive about where. The waitress was attentive and got all our order correctly. The Bandeja Paisa is so well complemented. I've been here a few times. I typically get the same items because I'm constantly craving it. The Bandeja includes: rice, beans, fried egg, pork skin, sweet plantain, arepa, and avocado. It's SO good. The pork skin is crispy but still so good. The arepa con queso is DELISH. Although an appetizer is not needed, I often find myself getting it. The staff here isnt the best. They arent always attentive and lack any waitressing skills. They take your order and dont come back until the food comes out. After they drop off your food - GOOD LUCK getting them to the table. If you know Steinway, you know there are so many small shops and exciting eateries all along the way, and this spot is no different! One of my wife's family go to's, she decides to introduce me, however there was one big difference.. she usually goes to Jackson Heights. The colors, bright, the furniture, down to the staff dressed in all white. What throws it off if anything are the huge tvs. My only advice is, put the tvs away and let people engage eachother, also have the staff engage people more, maybe even with some Colombian history. We started with pacha(passion fruit juice) and a Colombiana soda(tastes like kola champagne, i was pleasantly surprised, if you dont know kola champagne either- get out more. Think sweetened lighter coke). The passion fruit is a big one for me in a lot of places, here it wasnt top, but it was pretty good. Now the food. The portion sizes are out of this world. My wife got a huge steak on a sizzling platter, it was ok, but I am never a fan of sizzling dishes. What I am a fan of is the Bandeja Tipica aka the typical plate aka the kitchen sink because its damn near the whole menu on a plate. Chiccharron, steak, fried egg, plantains, rice and beans, an arepa, who is supposed to finish that?? I absolutely did, with two plates to separate things. Great flavor, somehow even with all this, some egg yolk brings it together. My only qualms with this dish at all was the arepa was pretty dry and the rice was on the flavorless end, even tho I swapped white for yellow. I feel like it is not authentic yellow rice and they should dig a tad deeper for seasoning. We ended off with a Flan, and this was not my choice because its not really my thing, but in merely trying it I felt sick. Now, Mario's consomme is not your traditional clear broth consomme. This was one hardy soup. Packed with potatoes, hearts, chicken gizzards, white meat in a richly flavored broth. I came here on a Saturday and it was relatively crowded, but there were still seats available. The restaurant is very spacious and there are booths everywhere. There was a good mix of couples and families inside, but I can see how families love coming here due to the large food portions. The menu was quite large with a number of entrees on there, but we went with the most popular dish - The Country Platter. The platter was a hodgepodge of foods - Steak, Fried Pork, Egg, Corn Cake, Rice, Beans, Avocado and Sweet Plantains. Just staring at the plate made me full, as it was MASSIVE, but that's what I came for so was ready for this challenge! The overall platter was 'OK' compared to what I've had at Tierras Colombianas. The Fried Pork was extremely difficult to cut and chew, which sort of made it a turn off to eat. The steak was decent, flavored and chewy. The least attractive item was the corn cake as it was devoid of flavor and the texture was not appealing. The rest of the ingredients were what they were, so no qualms there. As for the service, it was a little slow, but it's not like we were in any hurry. Overall, I can't say Pollos A La Brasa Mario is a winner, but it's not the worst option out there. Placed an order on May 5, 2023 via grubhub. I ordered Fish Soup with came along with a side order of white rice and fish. As I started to eat my soup I noticed a hair in my soup, so I contacted grubhub and even suggested to send them a picture to show proof of the hair in my soup. I was issued a refund.
