I've had the pleasure of dining in at Horsch Radish as well as getting food catered, and I would say both have been very good experiences. For a German restaurant in rural Illinois, the food has been fresh and authentic and is a nice change in scenery from the local cuisine. The hours are a bit odd, so you definitely have to be intentional when you want to visit. If you find yourself here at the right time, you'll have a decent meal for sure. If you're looking to try a little bit of everything, the Smorgasbord is your best option, that's what I ordered and shared with a colleague. The bratwursts were my favorite thing on the platter. There was definitely something going through the meat, some kind of sauce or cheese that added extra flavor to the sausage. The meat itself was rich and hearty for sure. The other sides were decent too, I really enjoyed the crispy potato pancakes and it was the first time I had tried spatzel. I'd say I'm a fan. The red cabbage was decent too, it was kind of just boiled cabbage. The Rahmschnitzel was definitely over-sauced. I'm sure the pan fried pork on its own was delicious, but by the time it hit the table, the sauce had turned the breading soggy and pork itself became a bit spongy as a result. Not only that, but the gravy wasn't the most warm and seemed a bit congealed. Everything else was satisfactory for sure. Dinner was decent, but the times I've had food catered has been awesome. Horsch Radish is well equipped to handle large events and can meet many different taste buds and food preferences. They had chicken, beef, fish, pasta, salads, everything on offer. All the food tasted great and all the guests loved it as well. Not only that, but the service provided was outstanding. In all honesty, I really liked the catering even more than the restaurant, and the catering wasn't necessarily German food! If you need a catering option, I'd look to Horsch Radish as an option for sure! read more

We were seated very quickly and it wasn't super busy but the servers were disorganized and rather than having all their tables together they were all over the place and everyone in our dining room was having issues with slow/disruptive service because of this. We got our drinks from the bartender about the time our entrees were coming out. The carrots and radish melt were just WET with the amount of oil used. The bacon and cheese fries were a little soggy but actually tasted pretty good. Drove 45 minutes to try this place after seeing the praise in the Smile Politely article on Facebook, but frankly, they must have paid someone to write this article because it was very underwhelming. read more

My parents and I were big fans of the Bayern Stube and eager to give its replacement Horsch Radish a try - it did not disappoint! The food menu is a bit more limited in comparison, but what it may lack in variety it more than makes up for in flavor! We will be back! read more

I'm glad that this place opened up after Bayern Strube, but they really need to figure out how to cook.... or at least taste their food. We've been a few times because of our fond memories of Bayern Strube, but I don't think we'll be back. They at least got rid of all those animal taxidermy statues..... and they've really spruced up the place. That's it. The first time we went, it was ok --- the bread they give at the start was very crumby.... and then our pretzel tasted burned. The meat flavored butter that they charged us for was very gamy. And then the proscuitto pasta that they were serving was extremely salty --- we had to send it back. I had the rahmschnitzel with green beans.... the green beans were perfect and the schnitzel was decent. The apple strudel with ice cream was heaven. Second time back because we loved the strudel. We all ordered the schnitzels and potato pancakes. Everything was like a hockey puck.... over-fried and hard. The pancakes were almost chips, but not potato flavor -- just a weird batter. The green beans were fantastic. The perogies were deep fried and hard. The apple strudel and ice cream was still amazing. There was a very loud man drinking a pink drink out of a martini glass....he was seated across the room -- we could hear his conversation loud and clear.... Third time back because we still love the strudel. I ordered the bison burger. It was very bland -- hardly seasoned, and dry.... the pickles were good though. We also had a chicken schnitzel.... it was really dry -- maybe use a chicken thigh??. The green beans were oily and soggy. The strudel was definitely nuked -- lava hot on the edges, but cold in the middle. The ice cream was still good. The only thing I finished was my beer. I'm so sad -- they really need to work on their food. We used to love Bayern Strube, but three meals at those prices ($100 for 4 people). read more

Man what a disappointing experience. Was excited to here a reopening of the german restaurant. But man the food was bad & I cook for a living. 1st out pretzel was burnt. They gave us lunch menus and my friend really had his heart set on the schnitzel sandwich. Said that is a lunch special, then couldn't find another option. I got the warm potato salad as a side...it was spoiled like in bad and tasted foul. Now My stomach is doing flips and scared to fart.. My coffee & water was empty and had to ask for refills. Drove 40 mins both ways paid @ $80.00 for food that was mediocre and spoiled. Needless to say will not go there again. Bayern Stube was so good but this is not even close. The flavors were so bad, demi was not from scratch, Schnitzel was tough and dry spaetzle gummy and tired. The should consider a menu overhaul ... Or hire better cooks. Check for spoilage, label and date, taste before serving, you can make someone very ill for days. I feel nauseous and its only been a couple of hours. read more

My friend and I just had an expensive lunch at Horsch Radish today, and what a disappointing meal. My friend had Schweinebraten and I had Rahmschnitzel. The meat was tough to cut, and both dishes were flavorless. Ordered spaetzle, and it was greasy and unappetizing. It was a red flag that our meals arrived about 5 minutes after we ordered them. Service to getting the correct drinks was slow. Food was mixed up. Food wasn't that hot. Also food was bad. The only good thing was the red cabbage. The sausages were burnt and extremely dry and flavorless. Pork cutlets flavorless. Bread was dry. Chicken cutlets also dry and flavorless. Our friends that we went with had the same complaints. The smorgasbord I ordered was $40, and it was absolute garbage (except the red cabbage). One of my friends ordered the same meal tonight and he couldn't eat it. It was that bad. This is the second time I've been and it was worse than the first visit. If they used quality food and actually had good cooks, this would be a great place. I've always wanted to try this place, and finally made time to do so. We went fairly early (4:30pm) and the waitress we had was fantastic and super attentive. I ordered the bangers and mash, and was pleasantly surprised that the bangers are made in house. Sounds like they source a lot of their meat locally, which is super cool! My husband and I had dinner on a Friday evening. The restaurant was not busy. We were seated promptly and brought a basket of bread with herbed butter. We ordered our food and it was served in good time. My husband had a pork schnitzel with mashed potatoes and broccoli. He liked the schnitzel but thought the broccoli was over done and the mashed potatoes were grey in color, unappealing but tasted ok. I had grilled pork with Spatzle which was delicious. I also ordered the sauerkraut and sausage soup. It had good flavor but was somewhat salty and no sausage. I would eat at the Horsch Radish again because I like German style food. read more

Small, overcooked medallions of pork that did not come close to passing as schnitzel. Sausages burnt to a black crisp; not even our server said she would eat it if presented to her. The food was excellent. Wonderful flavor and presentation. Four stars instead of five due to service. The server did not introduce herself or share the specials of the day. Appetizer (Pierogi) was served without plates to share or silverware to serve it with. If you buy a bottle of wine, the restaurant does not have ice buckets. The restaurant ran out of wine glasses, so we were given coupe glasses instead. Complementary bread and seasoned butter was enjoyable. We did not have enough bread plates. After requesting an additional bread plate, we were never given one. Entrees were excellent. Dessert (not pictured) was so so. There appeared to lots of wait staff on the dining room floor. But for the number of staff, the service was lacking. Additional training and a strong front of house manager may help to resolve this. Yes, I recommend Horsch Radish. Yes, I would go back. I do not live in the area. I enjoy eating German food. I was back to visit my mother ahead of Mother's Day. Took mom to this place the weekend prior to Mother's Day on a Saturday, 05/06. She was so excited to try it as she had been told how good it supposedly was. The 3 of us ordered different dishes to try. The experience was beyond disappointing; it was revolting. The portions were fine. The prices were ok had the food been even decent to eat. Service fair. The food quality terrible and the wait staff didn't seem to care. Appetizer sad representation of pierogis. Pork Loin extremely dry, no flavor and tough. Without the sauce and heavy salt would have choked on the meat. The butter knife provided didn't begin to cut it. The knife didn't have a chance. Only item on my plate fit to eat and was good was the sauerkraut. Poor way to promote the local farmers for the products they grow and produce. Chicken breast dry and tough to cut with a butter knife.. The sauce was ok. Again the sauerkraut the only decent item on the plate. Sausage tough skin and little-poor flavor. Three different dishes plus an appetizer and all were fails. Our church group drove over an hour to dine here and we were not disappointed!!! The food was excellent and the service was wonderful! They had excellent gluten free options. I'm not a huge fan of German food but I really enjoyed it! My only suggestion I would serve apple butter or sour cream options with the potato cakes. But they were yummy as they are, too. We really enjoyed our dinner at Horsch Radish. The food was wonderful - I pork schnitzel, red cabbage, and spaetzel. My husband had Schweinenbraten and red cabbage. The schnitzel was very tender with a lovely sauce. The red cabbage to me was like Danish red cabbage - on the sweeter side rather than sour - which I much prefer. Helpings were very generous and the staff polite and punctual. They have lightened the decor from the previous ownership so it has a lighter, more open feel while still keeping the German feeling. Traveled here all the way from Chicago and it did not disappoint! The staff was attentive, our waitress got us everything we needed and offered great recommendations. The food was delicious! Got some appetizers and the half chicken was HUGE! Everyone was jealous and had to try some. Split some desserts and we all left stuffed. Definitely recommend and definitely coming back! read more
