There were at least a dozen food stalls selling anything from home baked bread, cookies, donuts, Mexican food, and Asian. There were stalls selling arts and crafts which are unique to Orca's. We picked up some lunch and enjoyed as the local band sweet music on the stage. A few folks and their kids got off the ground and started dancing. What a scene, as if it's out of a movie scene. That…read moreexcitement was enhanced, even more than I would confess, by the prospects of seeing what the farmers market looks like here. Orcas has a long and rich agricultural history and I've seen plenty of farms and roadside farm stands that stood vacant in Decemeber. I was stoked for summer. Cue COVID.... Well, I'm happy to report that the market was still happening. I'm glad they didn't throw in the towel on it, though from what I'm told it was vastly different this year. Oh, you can imagine that in previous years there wasn't a mandatory handwashing station at the entrance. And I imagine there weren't dots on the ground to indicate where you should wait in order to approach each booth one party at a time. But more importantly, I'm told that the market, even though it's small and mighty in its biggest years, was only very teeny this year. There were probably 7-8 booths there, and that made for a quick visit. Still, we bought some flowers at one booth, and a bar of locally made soap at another, so we did our best to support the vendors who are making an effort despite the restrictions. I have nothing but love for a farmers market, and nothing but admiration for the participants. Though we were only here for a little bit, I'm glad we made it.

I came away with gifts for my grandbabies, honey to take home and a bottle of mead in my pocket! I was tempted by so much more. Parking gets busy, the later you come- but there is limited accessible parking & public restrooms. Every vendor I spoke with was wonderful & that made it very easy to shop! I adore the little sippy insulated cups I snagged! The market being so close to the waterfront means a nice breeze and views!

On a sunny day I could sit for hours and watch the Columbia Neighborhood locals strolls in and out with their dogs and kids (yes, it's kid-friendly). Be sure to check out the cool furniture made of old farm equipment. Oh, and grab a few plants for the garden too. There's also a taco truck on site, if you're hungry!

There were also garlic braids and bulbs, among other things. The coolest part: write down what you purchased on a notepad, and leave the cash in the bank in the shed! It was the neatest business concept I saw on the island and maybe ever. Little to no overhead and completely self-sufficient and sustainable.

Perhaps she sensed that I was interested in feeding my 20-month old son, Logan, something other than fried seafood. Everyone was great - like I was a regular who visited every day. They treated everyone like that, just genuinely friendly, kind and efficient. Oh, and in case you're wondering, I think that the tourists were out numbered by locals. I was a bit dismayed at the $8.95 sandwich price, but it was good sized for that price, and hey, it IS a tourist town. I had the Market Philly on the recommendation of a resident, and it was awesome. The meat was thin and fresh, and the onions & peppers (green, red and yellow) weren't greasy. They were nicely caramelized and all the juices soaked in to the bread without being too soggy. Bread I say because it wasn't a standard issue hoagie roll, it was more like a fresh baked bread in a flattened hoagie roll shape. I also had the "award winning" prawn chowder. It was good, more fresh vegetables, a few shrimp, and a strangely addictive and spicy base. Most impressive was that my son LOVED the soup. Or in his broken language "mmm. shoup. good. shoup. more! like it." He's never described is like of any food before, and he ate 90% of my bowl. Isn't a half salad/sandwich combo supposed to be like only 5 buck or something, the idea of ordering the half is to save money. However, that was obviously not the case. Then when I got my food, there was only a small sliver of turkey on my sandwich, and my dad's side of potato salad... came in a freakin CONDIMENT CUP! .... you know, when you ask for a side of ketchup... yeah, his potato salad was in there... about a whole ounce worth!
