We only had about a dozen in our group - we went at 1 PM. We were told to go earlier but the size of our group was smaller because we waited and the colors were still pink amazing. There are some pretty steep steps to climb down in the beginning but don't let those deter you. Just go slow - it's worth it!

There is a gift shop and cafe you can grab a cold beverage and a bite of food that is worth visiting. *NOTE* You must check in 30 minutes prior to your tour time AND you can only bring a water bottle and a camera/cellphone . Put your keys in your pocket and leave everything else in your car. Wear shoes you can walk through sand to get to site and that you can climb down and up ladders. This is a very busy tour but well worth it. The tour is on Navajo Tribal lands so please respect the land and those that work this tour and even more so when it's hot out.

The easiest is to take a 2 hour boat tour/ride and it will take you to about a mile's hike to the bridge. Not the easiest natural bridge to get to but would be worth it when you get there. It is a sacred bridge to the Navajo Indians so you are requested not to walk under or approach the arch. Might be better to go in the evening, because sunlight does not fall on it in the morning from the viewing area and you are not heavily pressured to respect tribal custom and not walk under the bridge and take pictures from the other side. Don't even think about walking around it, since that would be walking off the trail and the fine is $25,000, if you are caught.

Now listen I'm gonna tell you straight. You can hike it, sure. Strap on your pack, bake in that canyon heat, follow the mules and the dust like you're reenacting some pioneer tragedy. Or... you take the helicopter. Drop in like you've got better sense than the rest of 'em. Because when you're only staying a night, you don't waste half your trip pretending you enjoy suffering. You get there quick, boots on the ground, eyes wide open. And what waits for you... ain't normal. The water this unreal shade of blue, like someone spilled paint straight outta heaven itself cuts through red rock like it's been there since before memory had a name. The canyon walls stand tall, watching. Always watching. You can feel it. Not in a poetic way... in a you're not alone kind of way. The people there, the tribe they carry a quiet presence. Like they know something they're not in a hurry to explain. Respectful, grounded... but there's history in their eyes. Old history. Night comes different down there. The fire was crackling low. Shadows stretching just a little too far, bending where they shouldn't. That's when I saw it. Across the canyon, tucked behind a tree like it didn't quite understand hiding... something big. Hairy. Not a trick of the light. Not a deer. Not a man. It stood there. Watching. Then came the sound. Tap... tap... tap. Something hitting the tent. Not hard. Just enough to say, "I'm still here." I thought maybe rocks... maybe pinecones. But there weren't any trees above us that could explain it. And whatever it was it had aim. I told the others. Nobody laughed. Nobody slept. We sat around that fire like it was the last safe place on earth, eyes fixed into the dark, waiting for something to step forward... or worse, not step forward. Because sometimes what you don't see is worse than what you do. Finally, in a moment of pure, desperate brilliance or stupidity someone grabbed a sandwich and chucked it out there into the black. There's a lodge in the village and a campground area another 2 miles from the village, both have different dates to apply for permits online about a year in advance. There are 5 amazing water fall sites once you pass the village. 50 Foot Falls, Lower Navajo Falls, Havasu Falls, Mooney Falls, and Beavers. An additional journey heading out 6 miles past Beaver falls you can get to the Confluence where you can see the Havasu Creek water meet up with the Colorado river. For the camp sites you aren't assigned an actual location you just grab any available site that's not directly on the trail. There's a fresh water spring in the camp site where we refilled out bottles for the 4 days & 3 nights we were here. Also 2 miles back up at the village they do have a cafeteria with burgers fries, hot dogs and all that other stuff. If you're not up for the 8-10 miles hike into the village/campground with all your camping gear on your back they have options at additional cost. You can have your bags packed on miles/horses and carried into the site & they also have helicopter rides in and out of the village (first come first serve, the natives have priority to skip the line at anytime)

We booked two nights and were required to put down a deposit that was 50% of the cost of the total stay. One month before our stay, our plans changed and we notified them we would like to cancel. They refused to refund our deposit and said we could keep it as a credit for one year. We are never going to be out in that area so a credit is not useful. Do not recommend.

We had several that couldn't do much hiking, so Colt took us to the areas that worked best for us. But we passed another group that went farther and deeper in the caves as they were a younger group. Clothing attire for safety. We brought ball caps- which is a NO- but, you can either take advantage of the complimentary helmet (hopefully you have sunglasses) or you can purchase a cute cowboy hat for $8- which is a steal! If you decide to bring sunglasses/ cell phone- you will be given string to secure the items on you. The mules are easily distracted and curious if the tour doesn't go as planned. LOL When I made the phone reservation- it was also mentioned ANY bags will NOT be allowed on the mule. Just make sure you check in your bag/ purse to the Bright Angel Lodge guest check in (right next to the tour check in desk) and they will give you a claim ticket. The bell hop closet is secured and locked. Once you arrive at the mule corral- instructions will be given in a group huddle. Once you are assigned your mule- the same steering/ handling of the mules will be given by your tour guide. The weather was perfect for our adventure! It was pretty cool when I was assigned Sheldon & my bestie was assigned Delilah. Tex, our tour guide mentioned both of them are "an item". LOL If you enjoyed your tour guide and the mule rides, pay it forward! Show your appreciation! If you did not bring cash for a tip- you can always ask for a tip envelope back at the tour desk in Bright Angel Lodge. ** I didn't wear glasses & did not put into consideration how dusty it gets on the trails. The rules are super strict and kinda unreasonable for some in my opinion. They include Long pant and long sleeve shirts. Closed toe shoes. Full brim hat with chin strap (no baseball caps) but Kids wear helmets. Lanyards for eye or sun glasses and phones (sold for $30 but fyi they can make ones with string for you too for free). Weight limit of 225 lbs. A Required call-in confirmation 48 hours in advance followed by Check-in the day before (90 minutes before ride checkin if you can't come day before or else 30 minutes before ride if you can). Fluent English also required which is probably why we saw zero non-Anglo ethnicities on our tour. Weight is done the day before you leave at the bright angel lodge checkin. Scale seems to weigh in a few pounds heavier than my scale at home. Not sure which is correct. You can park in guest reservation area right in front of the lodge to do the check in as finding parking is near impossible during the day. You get free Davey Crockett looking water flask bottle to keep but you gotta wash it out with lemon juice (given for free) overnight to get the inside clean and not tasting weird. You can fill it up at the water bottle filing station in the lobby of bright angel lodge It can be cold there even in June due to the high winds. Probably why you need a chin strap on the hats. One guy lost his hat even with the strap It's like $200 per person for a 2 hour ride that doesn't go into the canyon but just along the rim. Honestly 2 hours was 1 hour too long for us. Legs and butt sore by the end. Guides are nice. If you're up front you can hear stories from the guide. Otherwise it's just you and the mule to pontificate. Mules are housed around Yaki Point. About 15 minute ride from Bright Angel Lodge. They walk along the rim there. 1 hour out and 1 hour same path back.
