Took my car to Horsman in the back half of 2024 because it was making a rattling noise in the front when stopped and in drive, and Horsman has stellar reviews. They came back and told me it was my engine mounts - a $2k fix. Had them do it. Get the car home, seems slightly quieter, but it still rattles a bit. Call them up and take it back in. They tell us they tightened something and it should be fine now. Take it home, notice a few days later it still rattles. Call them up to take it back in for a THIRD time. They tell me it's because they didn't have the "standard" Nissan engine mounts and it would be $400 to put the correct Nissan ones on (why I wasn't told this initially, I don't know - I would've asked to wait to replace them until they had the standard Nissan ones). Have them make the swap. So we are now $2400 into this repair. Take it home, STILL rattles. At this point I am frustrated and fed up. I finally take it to the Nissan dealership to get it checked out. Nissan tells me there's a brake booster hose/line out of the insulating clip that's rattling on top of the brake line. They re-secured the line to the clip, and now the rattling has completely stopped. Cost me the $180 to fix and that was basically just the inspection cost. I gave them two stars because they were incredibly nice and I appreciate kind people and good customer service, but I cannot overstate how irritated I am. I understand with cars there may be one thing that seems like the issue and it ends up being something else, but this just seems like someone didn't look closely enough the first time considering how quickly Nissan found the issue. It ended up costing me $2400 that could've been better spent on other various repairs on my 12 year old car. read more

Unreliable and very very narcissistic. They literally boast about being the very most expensive mechanical shop in Southern Ca. Major snobby attitude big time. Any other place is better than this. I found this place triple a. Automotive repairs make me nervous. I have been to many other places and feel like they never fix the problem and charge you an arm and a leg. My car had the check engine light on and I was stressed on where to go. I went here by chance and they were wonderful. They checked my car and said that there was nothing wrong. That it was my gas cap that was loose and causing air to get in my tank and trigger the check engine light. The guy was so kind he didn't even charge me the diagnostics fee. I thought wow!!! Sure enough I ordered a new gas cap and my car ran perfect. No check engine light. They got a customer for life!! I no longer have that car and have been back a few times with my husbands car. More recently I went with my newer car for a break issue. Turns out my breaks were just dirty. They cleaned them and I was happy to pay the service fee. I didn't even ask for the triple aaa discount. I thought the price was fair. They even squeezed me in, as I didn't have an appointment. If you are looking for honest, good quality automotive repairs go here. I have been taking the family vehicles to Horsman Automotive for nearly 15 yesrs. Pete and Billy are both personable, pleasant and, most importantly, honest. Unlike my experiences with the "dealer" shops, they genuinely have my best interest at heart. All work to date has been of the highest quality and charges have been fair and reasonable. Perhaps just as important, I have occasionally been sent on my way with no charge when the "major" problem was only a loose (fill in the blank) that required nothing more than a quick tweak with a wrench. Had a coolant leak so I took it to Horsman because of their good reviews, but in my experience, their quality of work reflects the rating. The part that needed replacing was in between 2 hoses, one of which was leaking due to age/mileage. Common sense would be to replace both since you can assume the other will fail soon, but they just cut and spliced the old hose without calling me to tell me they were doing so. I didn't appreciate the bandaid type fix so when I found out about it I called them about it and they guy that answered said he "remembered" doing the fix and it must have been because I told him to take that shortcut. Firstly, I discovered the problem a few months after they "fixed" it so for the guy to remember with such surety of how I told him to fix it was...questionable. Secondly, I've never told ANY mechanic to take a shortcut. I've always told them to do it right. I have a long commute and can't risk getting stranded, just to save a couple bucks. And sure enough that same hose developed a leak and left me stuck on the freeway two days ago. People need to trust their mechanic or at least have them own up to making a mistake. Oh, and they get 2 stars because the facility was decent and they finished the "fix" on time. read more

I give a 3 star, Only because the work I had done, was correct. However, upon showing up, I talked to the guy at the front desk, told him our problems, and he took the keys and they got started. About 2 hours after dropping the car off, I received a call that they needed to order a part from Chevy, and that it would be about $200 to install it. I was already desperate to get it fixed, because I was a 19 year old kid doing a favor for my Mom who needed her car fixed. When I went to pick it up, I was hit with an $800+ dollar bill, and still don't quite understand why. If you're desperate, I would go here. But if you have time to wait to get your car fixed, find someone else. These guys charge an arm and a leg, and to me seems like they take advantage. read more

I live in the South Bay and I made the effort into coming out to Santee because the reviews on Horsman Automotive were amazing so I figured I couldn't go wrong coming here. I applied for the Consumer Assistance Program(CAP) which will provide you with a $500 check to have repairs done to your car if its not passing the smog check due to emissions related problems. When I came to drop off my car, they told me they would need to have it for two days. Such bullshit! I called the previous day, they told me to bring it first thing in the morning and they would have it for the entire day. Later that day, they called and informed me on several things wrong with it but the main issue was the catalyst converter; with the labor, it would just bump me over the $500 limit. So, I had no choice but to listen to them and go with whats most important to stay within the price range. While I was out roaming Santee, I looked up different prices for a catalyst converter and they range from $90 to $180. When I looked at the receipt, they were charging me $274.31. Bullshit! Then, the labor came out to $239.31. Really? You have to charge me almost the same as the item itself? Come on, ridiculous. I really believe they ripped me off and tried to maximize the $500 check with as little labor and parts. I've heard from several people who have gone through this route that have had the mechanic really help the customer maximize their money by doing as much mechanical work as possible within the budget. On top of that, the guy who was helping me out was rude. I noticed and heard how he conversed with other customers in a much more friendlier manner. I should have stayed local. read more

Decided to go here after seeing that it won the AAA quality service award for 6 years running. Although I went for just a basic SMOG check, I had a great experience. They got my car in right away, got my car out faster than they said they would, it was as cheap as most other SMOG places, it is a Gold shield station, and the place was noticeably clean in the waiting room and in the service station so they likely take pride in their work. I will definitely take my car here for any future service and hopefully will get the same great service and I will report back here with the results. Only negative comment is I wish they'd spend a little extra time on their website. I mean... I'd rather get great prices and service but... a little pride in the website wouldn't hurt. read more

We took our 2000 Honda Prelude to Horseman Automotive recently. The "motor light" had gone on in the car. We have gone here a few times due to the fact they are recommended by the BBB. I was sure we were going to have to put our beloved car "to sleep" due to her age and mileage. We picked her up today with a bill of $30.00 !!! I can't find fault with these guys ever! They're fast and thorough and reasonably priced. Even this last time when they weren't able to reproduce the rough idle symptom I've been experiencing with my 93 Ranger, I can't help but love them. Intermittent problems like these are hard to reproduce and Horsman did everything they could and their customer service skills are impeccable. I first heard about Horsman years ago from a friend in Santee who told me he and his family use Horsman exclusively for all their vehicles. I'd been having pretty terrible time finding and using auto shops that gave me the cheapest quotes for a job. When I started using Horsman I was blown away. I tell everyone to use them. Even my father, who is a capable do-it-yourself car guy and also loves disagreeing with me, even he now uses Horsman Auto exclusively. What else... I took my motor home in due to a horrible shake in the front end by the motor. They put new plugs and coil packs on my ford v-10 took all the shake away and it runs as smooth as can be. I took my 4 runner here to get my tire fixed. They were referred by the Costco tire shop. I tried taking my tire to discount tire of Santee but was told I had to buy a brand new tire because it was too close to the tire shoulder. But Horsman fixed my tire for $20. I know it would have been free if discount wasn't so shady. read more
