By God's grace and through the dedication, skill, and compassion of the doctors, nurses, and staff at UMC, James is still here today. The medical care was outstanding, but what really touched our family was the humanity shown during an incredibly difficult time. Because our family refused to leave his side, the hospital allowed us to convert a conference room into a Thanksgiving dining room so we could be together while James was in the next room receiving care. I will never forget that kindness. I will never forget the blood drives, the support, the compassion, and the way the staff cared not only for James but for our entire family. This hospital will always hold a special place in my heart.

Right when the MD recognized our situation, the number of specialists that came to our aid was not only comforting but reassuring. They quickly went to work and got her home with only 3 days on the PICU. The whole hospital staff, from MDs to RNs, front desk to behind the scenes, were helpful, very informative, and very patient with our million questions. Being in the medical field myself, it was great to see everyone take their time and be very thorough with us. All to often, people are in too much of a rush, but not at EPCH! We got all our questions answered and got answers to questions we didn't even know we had! Our frequent visits to the PICU were spent by picking the brains of all the RNs about routines, nursing, sleeping, swaddling, to use or not to use kinda advice. So I guess you can say we made the best of our situation. I love that EPCH is a teaching hospital because it allowed us to clue in to what concerns the MDs had and what they were looking for, allowing us plenty of opportunities to ask and learn from the specialists. But with that being said, the residents were super knowledgable and very approachable and friendly. Overall, if you or your wife, or you are pregnant and your looking around for a hospital, take a look at EPCH with the UMC L&D floor. I wasn't aware that Texas Tech has its own lot vs El Paso Psychiatric Center, nothing was indicated on the signage, nor was it told to me by appointment scheduling. This last time I came they were adamant that I couldn't park there without a handicap sticker even though there were non handicap spaces available. I had to go to an open lot which I did in the back of the building because they told me it was next to the parking garage. However, it also was not the correct spacing even though there is absolutely no signage indicating that it wasn't the correct lot just a sign stating EPCC for the psychiatric center building, which is where I was heading. So had the attendant been more clear stating that it is the open lot with the attendant booth, that is where you need to go, it would have saved a lot of grief and time. This whole rigamarole made me miss my appointment time, trying to find the appropriate lot and I did after 3 tries, no thanks to the vague and inaccurate instructions. Bad experience overall and I can see people in mental distress trying to obtain help being discouraged by barriers and procedures such as this. Recently a veteran shot himself here locally in front of the veterans building because he couldn't get in for treatment, he was in such mental distress. These institutions are supposed to be helpful not act as a hindrance. Retrain your attendants, get new signage, simple steps to engage and not deter potential patients.

These are families that have legal documents to get information from the hospital. Patients are sent to court even though they voluntarily there and are not asking to leave. After talking to several family members of patients, they are experiencing unfathomable experiences. Families and patients are not getting any feedback on their loves. Some are kept for months without any explanation. Some family members have stated that they are not given the name of the doctor that their loved one is seeing inside the hospital. This hospital does not want to talk to family members and does not ensure that the patients inside the facility are kept safe from developing harmful romantic relationships with drug addicts, and other mentally ill patients. There needs to be some kind of local committee, overseeing that mental-health hospitals are watched. Committees members need to have UNANNOUNCED VISITS and talk to the family members as well. Over-site needs to include a bi-monthly schedule to ensure fidelity of implementation and a wholistic care plan. Family relationships are not fostered in this facility and are not valued as support systems for patients. At the very least, there should be a patient and family survey sent out at the beginning, middle, and end of treatment.

I recently had the inconvenient pleasure of staying in a hospital, after being flown out from my…read morelocal hospital to Del Sol, I didn't know what to expect, as I have never been admitted into the hospital nor have had to stay in one. Upon my arrival, the ER staff was amazing in taking care of me and my needs. I was placed into Med Surg Floor 5 of Del Sol in preparation for a surgical procedure. Immediately the nurses made sure I was comfortable, and were diligent in making sure I was ok, as they knew I was nervous for the surgical procedure that laid ahead. Michael RN was the first nurse to care for me and he was amazing, professional, humorous, and kind. He made extra sure I was ok, and all my questions were answered. Amber CNA was absolutely amazing, she went above and beyond, and I enjoyed having her come to my room just to check vitals (as anyone who has been in a hospital I'm sure this part of the process is bothersome) but she was absolutely amazing in the way she cared for people and her job. Eyleen RN was the second nurse I had for the evening and she made sure my father in law who was staying with me was also comfortable, as I was pretty much out of it in the evening time, she not only cared for me, but my guest. Patrick RN was like a brother, he came in to the room, and it immediately felt like I was home talking with my brothers joking, conversing, and making light of a pretty bad situation, all the while making sure I was comfortable, and taken care of. Last but not least, Carlos RN, he was the last one to care for me before heading home, and he did all he could to make sure we got home when the doctor said we could, he was kind, and just like Patrick, felt like family. I can't speak on behalf of any other wards in the hospital but what I experienced in Med/Surg was, even though a terrible situation, was wholesome, comforting, and an experience I won't likely forget, including the amazing Nurses, and CNA's that cared for me. Michael, Eyleen, Amber, Patrick, and Carlos, thank you for all you did for me and my family, I will carry all of you in my heart for life.

My dad died after being treated at Providence Sierra, and I will never forget how everything…read moreunfolded. After being transferred from Grants, NM, to Las Cruces, NM, and then to El Paso, we were told they would better manage his condition. He had a serious mass in his throat that was a huge issue, and he was struggling, but he was still fighting. The night he arrived, I was informed that he became very irate and agitated and that the staff told me that they were going to be releasing my father, against the doctor's recommendations. After calling two security guards and then strapping my father to his hospital bed, they decided to administer medication to calm him. I was later told that shortly afterward, his heart stopped, CPR was performed, and he was intubated, despite the fact that he had a DNR in place!!!!!! I can't for the life of me, EVEN BEGIN to wrap my head around how he went from being so full of life, causing so much chaos, to being put on life support not even 8 hours after arriving at this hospital!!! (WHO WAS MORE EQUIPPED TO HANDLE HIS CONDITION!!!!) As his daughter, trying to understand the sequence of events and the decisions made has been incredibly difficult. We have not yet received a clear, detailed explanation of what occurred in his final hours. Losing a parent is devastating. Not having clear communication or a full understanding of what happened makes it even harder. I am currently requesting his full medical records in hopes of getting answers. I encourage other families to stay involved, ask questions, and advocate for their loved ones' care and wishes. Furthermore, I ONLY GAVE THEM 1 STAR BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T LET ME NOT GIVE THEM ANY!!!!

I had to be re-admitted to clear up the infection. Additionally, the food was very bad. As a result, I will not go back for any future care at the Sierra Campus.

PLEASE READ if you find yourself needing to advocate for a vulernable loved one. My experience is frustrating and frankly alarming. The provider in this case, Nurse Practioner Jacob Butler demonstrated what I can only describe as a concerning level of indifference and lack of engagement in my mother's care. As the MPOA I made repeated efforts to comunicate, advocate, and ensure appropriate decisions were made. However, those efforts were largely dismissed and ignored, till I indicated I would be writing this review! There was a clear unwillingness to listen, colloborate, or take my concerns seriously. Most troubling was the refusal to pursue a judges order for neccessary pyschotrophic meds despite clear medical need. The justification was the patient was not "aggresive"-is not only inadequate but misleading in the interpertation of Texas Law. Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 573 explains reasons for Emergency Detention. Texas Health and Safety Code 574, and 574.106 for Court-Ordered Administration of Psychoactive Medications. None of which state aggresive behavior as a criteria with "self-harm" being broader than the explantion suggested to me. Throughout this process, repeated attempts to communicate with her provider were met with dismissiveness, minimal engagement, and questionable clinical judgment. Families should not have to struggle this hard to ensure their loved ones receive appropriate care.
