I've been a long time fan of Hot Joy and it's a literal staple of my 20's. Checked out the new location and loved every minute of it . There was a small crowd but our server was very attentive.The ambiance was lovely but not as quirky as the original location. There is a whole new menu but they kept the ol' faithfuls; spam fried rice and twice fried wings ( and those dishes alone are worth the trip.) Found this place on Instagram and we were really excited to try it out. The food looked great, the decorations and style really was what intrigued us to come try it out. I was so disappointed. 2 stars for drinks. Service was alright. Food was not the best. I was expecting more authentic food and I did not receive authentic food. We ordered the orange chicken, egg rolls and what we thought was steak fried rice (not pictured). The orange chicken was good but the portion was not really sharing size as we had been told. Then when the steak fried rice arrived, man that was not what we had expected and it did not taste right at all. I'm not one to send food back but I couldn't eat it. I recently dined at Hot Joy and wanted to share my thoughts on the experience. The pork Dan Dan Noodle caught my attention with its beautiful presentation, and the first taste was quite enjoyable. However, as I continued eating, the heavy presence of Chinese Szechuan Spice became a bit overwhelming and dominated the flavors. It felt like there was too much reliance on the sauce, which made it difficult for me to finish the entire dish. Similarly, I ordered the Sichuan Tofu Steam Buns, and once again, the Szechuan spice was prominently used. While the initial bite was okay, I found the flavor to be too overpowering for my taste. Overall, while Hot Joy's dishes may appeal to those who appreciate intense and bold flavors, it didn't quite hit the mark for me. I appreciate the effort put into the presentation and the potential behind the dishes, but personally, I found the reliance on Szechuan spice to be too much. It's really disappointing that everytime I come here there's a problem. Having worked in the service industry the past 5 years, I hate to make complaints but this time I've just had enough. It started with walking around the restaurant because the server couldn't find a table without crumbs. Then we were given a glass with lipstick on the rim. About 30 minutes after ordering everything, we had to remind our server about our wings, we were told that they were delivered to the wrong table, and then they came out undercooked. We could only eat 2/5 because there was blood and the meat was pink. The wings should've been at least discounted because of how long they took (mind you, it was not a busy night at all, there were 3 other tables at most), and because over half the order was inedible, but I guess that's besides the point. We were given half ass excuses about everything, a pretty disappointing drink recommendation, and just overall poor customer service. Also we weren't given the typical finger/hand wipes that I always appreciate so much at the end of my meal. The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars (and any more chances at all) is because the atmosphere is one of my favorites in the city, and because my rotating frozen (orange creamsicle) drink was good. Oh, and we had to wait about 10-15 minutes for "the manager to enter the Offline code" just to be told that they couldn't be located and that the server would override it. When delivered the bill, the server said she took off the $30 for Offline and "a little extra", which was not the case so it was pretty weird for her to lie about that. read more

This place is so cute and colourful; we were kind of annoyed that we were seated in the corner of the restaurant away from the rest of the customers/fun vibes so I feel like this made our experience a little duller than what we were looking for but regardless our experience was great. We shared twice fried wings, fried rice, and Dan Dan noodles. Everything was flavourful and clearly made fresh. Our waitress was also friendly and helpful explained the dishes and deals. It was also happy hour while we were there for all small and large dishes were half price so all three of our dishes plus 2 beers were only $37 which is crazy affordable! We walked in around 7:30 pm on a Saturday night, as you can expect there was a long wait, but we put ourselves on the waitlist. Would highly recommend making a reservation if possible! It has been a LONG time since I've been to Hot Joy and I'm glad we went. It is such a unique experience. The decor is so fun and dramatic. The food is inventive and delicious. Our server was pleasant even if we saw him infrequently. We had the scallion noodles, cornbread, wings, French onion fried rice (so creative), another dish I am forgetting, and dessert. Having been a huge fan of the dishes I tried at the old location, we ventured out to the new one to give it a try. The atmosphere is much more open and bright and has a community feel (as apparent by the community style tables). Our server was an absolute delight and could not have been more kind and happy to tell us about all the dishes. As for the food- the Sichuan tofu buns were a highlight for me. The tofu was extra crispy and it definitely had that distinct Sichuan tingle. The Thai fried rice was not my favorite (but my girlfriend couldn't get enough, so that was more of a personal preference) the flavors of the herbs were really strong which isn't inherently bad but they seemed to clash a bit to me. The steamed garlic bok choy was nearly there on flavor but definitely needed the chili oil that is available on the table. Drinks were both great and everything came out quickly! We went for lunch so we definitely look forward to going back during dinner to check out more from the full menu. But be aware!
