We also got four pieces of shrimp as a surprise complimentary dish, and chose to have the lobster steamed with garlic butter. The dim sum was just okay, but the highlight of the show was definitely the lobster! It was steamed just right--tender, juicy, and full of flavour. The vermicelli noodles underneath were delicious too. I actually thought they were just there for decoration at first, but no, they're definitely edible! The lobster was cleaned so nicely that I didn't even need to use the special pliers to crack the shell further. Service was friendly, and there's also a 5% discount for paying in cash, which is always a nice bonus. This mom and pop Chinese restaurant in Niagara Falls, Canada is just what Yelp should promote. It is not in the heart of the touristy areas but just a short drive away and well worth it. The place looks like a home that was converted into a restaurant with parking in the back but once you enter, you feel like you are going into one of your Auntie's places for an actual home cooked meal. And they did not disappoint! Each dish was made to order and took a short time but you could tell it was prepared by a chef with a lot of experience and care--just looking at how the veggies were chopped/diced you can see they put their energy into each dish. The flavors were really superb and not at all overpowering and one major bonus--nothing was over salted or over oily as you might think typical Chinese food can get. Our party of 4 loved every bite and finished all our dishes, no leftovers. As you can see in the photos, they make an excellent meal. Prices are also very affordable and competitive with anything near the touristy areas. So if you want a solid, great meal prepared by a true mom & pop kitchen that feels like a home cooked meal, you really gotta try them out. I asked them how business was in summer vs winter and they said it's tough when it's winter (less tourists) but they make it work. It's also nice and quiet/intimate so you can have an actual conversation with your group rather than try to talk over some loud music at a chain restaurant! ----TL;DR---- Pros: excellent Chinese cuisine at very affordable prices and great portions. There's so much I have to say about this Chinese restaurant that I find it hard to begin. I have a passion for Chinese food and I've been to some of the top Chinese restaurants in the world. This spot nestled in a small house posing as a store front is funky and so amazingly eclectic by chance and not by design. Inside the front entry is a room filled with very old furniture and older carpeting. I can see rooms going up the stairs but not anything representing a restaurant or restaurant dining room. It took a moment for someone to greet us. He spoke little English and seemed shocked that we were there. He gestured for us to wait for the owner. It took a few minutes and apparently it was the owner who appeared. He seemed surprised as well for our entrance. We asked if we could have dinner, he thought for a moment and then gestured us up the stairs to one of the rooms in the house that must have been someone's personal dining room at one point! There was a table with a group of people our table and a two top table on the side wall which was empty. We perused the menu and realized that the name of the restaurant is about their specialties!!!!! Hot Lobster prepared several ways and offerings of dim sum. lol now it makes sense to me we chose a lobster Hong Kong style and several dim sum items, some I actually had never seen before. I had to say the dim sum we ordered was delicious. I found out freshly hand made daily by the restaurants chef. The Lobster came out on this massive platter. Wow generous portions cooked to perfection and served in an excellent Hong Kong style with the right amount of spice and breading the lobster meet was meaty and so flavorfully sweet! We couldn't get over how delicious this meal was! The owner's wife came over several times to see how we were enjoying the food and she actually apologized for the decor. Did I mention the Christmas lights and Santa chairs? She mentioned she was embarrassed that the restaurant was in the condition it was in but that they couldn't afford to remodel. I told her that her food was truly amazing and that she should just freshen the place up and leave it as is because the old relics, Santa stuff, old furniture it just ads to the lure and quirkiness of this amazing delicious restaurant. As they mentioned earlier, I have been to some of the top Chinese restaurants in the world and I have to say I have to rate this place this restaurant in this little hole in the wall It's probably in the top 10 to 15 of the restaurants have been to it was so good. We actually came back another night and had more dim sum and lobster prepared another way that evening. The portions were so generous we couldn't even finish. The owners were so nice that we enjoyed their cooking that they actually brought out at the end a delicious looking shrimp dish that we couldn't even touch because we were so full and going back to the hotel. Food tasted legit, and it tasted like some of the Chinese food we're accustomed to where I'm from in the SF Bay Area. The service was on the slow side, though. An authentic Chinese restaurant located in Niagara Falls. This place looks really random both from the exterior and interior. It's a red house with parking in the back. You walk inside and it definitely feels like someone just created a restaurant out of their living room and it's awesome - on par with Niagara Falls feel. However, do not let the looks deceive you, this is no tourist trap restaurant (well for the most part). I do think ownership has changed hands in the past year when we spoke to the owners. The food is authentic and delicious and, relatively speaking, a great bang for your buck. Food: 1) Beef rice noodles - it has the Wok Hei flavor and aroma that comes with doing this dish right. Lots of beef cooked well and tender, tons of noodles, the right amount of bean sprouts, onions, green onions and red peppers to add variety. 5/5. 2) Tofu and vegetables - the tofu they fry up here is different than the typical deep fried ones. There's no typical outer shell which tells me they likely took fresh tofu and fried it up. Lots of brocolli, red peppers, green peppers and onions accompany this dish with a savory sauce - 5/5. 3) Chicken with snap peas - chicken is cooked well and tender. Snap pea also cooked well but retain that crunch. Great dish that pairs with rice. 4.5/5. 4) Sweet and sour pork chop. So this was the only miss for the dishes but mainly because I was expecting pork chops but what we got with deep fried pork balls in the very Americanized sweet and sour sauce. The dish itself is pretty good, the deep fried pork has a great crispy exterior and meat is juicy and tender. The sweet and sour sauce is definitely very artificial and sweet. If this is what you want from sweet and sour pork - 4/5. Because it wasn't what it said it should be - aka pork chops - lowered to 3/5. This place was delicious!!! Probably the best meal of our whole trip. We came right when they opened. And they do take a long time with the food but it's worth it. We opted for the à la carte vs the all you can eat. We got the black pepper lobster and it was so darn good. They gave us a complimentary order of the special salt shrimp, this was the 2nd best dish we got. We also ordered the fried tofu and vegetables. Service was slow and there was really only person trying to handle everybody. We were told to simply write down the numbers associated with the meals listed in the menu because the waiter was too busy and seemed to have limited English. Although the waiter vacuumed the floor by a previously used table he was able to get to bus or clear that table left with dishes from a previous diner. So the ambiance was marred by the lack of staff to clear the tables. My wife and I were visiting Niagara Falls for the first time. I tend to look for the places to eat away from all the tourist-y type places. When "Hot Lobster Dim Sum" came up on Yelp, I said, "With a name like that, how can we not go?!" Some may feel the ambiance is a tad weird but this totally has "hole in the wall" vibe for sure. We ordered the lobster dinner for two. Visually, it looked really amazing. The shrimp dumplings were not minced, but whole shrimp. The pork buns were a little over steamed but flavor of the char sui was on point. The lobster may not be for everyone. It's messy and delicious. You're either picking the meat out with your fingers or sucking the meat out of the legs. It could use a touch of shoyu but other than that the flavor of ginger was strong which made the dish for me. I'd love to try the other cooking methods if we ever come back this way. The seafood friedrice was probably the most disappointing as it lacked flavor and the toppings didn't taste fresh. It was a little bit pricey for what they offered, but overall a decent place. After spending a fortune for a mediocre meal in one of the falls-view touristy restaurants, we were very pleased to find Hot Lobster Dim Sum a quick Uber ride away from our hotel. I'm so glad we decided to explore beyond the strip because this meal was one of the highlights of our trip to Niagara Falls. The restaurant itself is quaint and inviting with its homey tables set up in various rooms of what appears to be a former home. We asked for assistance from our server in selecting a variety of dim sum to sample, as we aren't very familiar with the options. We wound up ordering a variety of about eight dim sum dishes as our meal. Everything we tried was absolutely wonderful. Favorites were the sticky rice, steamed bbq pork bun, and fried eggplant. We also ordered some wonton soup. You'd think wonton soup is so popular at any Chinese restaurant that it would be difficult to find one that's distinctive. They surprised me, though. Theirs is hands down the best I've ever had. The flavor of the broth was superb! Niagara Falls was a vacation visit for us and I don't know if we'll ever get back. I had high hopes for this restaurant based on reviews, and the restaurant was busy this day with many Asians visiting the Niagara region. They were likely on the lookout for good Chinese food as well. We tried some typical, but limited dim sum fare and Singapore Style Vermicelli. Unfortunately, the food did not meet our expectations. It was bland and pale, missing some needed seasoning and 'wok hei.' The table near us had visitors from Singapore trying a couple of lobster dishes, and it sounded as though they thought it was just 'fair' as well. Did not hear them raving, but they said the lobster with ginger onion was the better dish. Service was fair. We were looked after promptly upon sitting, but it took a while to get our bill at the end of our meal, as the restaurant became busier. Solid Cantonese style cooking with dim sum. We ordered from dim sum, chicken feet, sautéed broccoli, sichuan chicken, fried eggplant and the shrimp wontons. The chicken feet came with three large pieces, and was delicious. The sautéed broccoli was my fav, with tons of minced garlic! The sichuan chicken had good flavor, but hubby said not a lot of chicken meat. The fried eggplant was not at all what I thought it would be, I thought it would be the eggplant stuffed like in typical dim sum, but this was actually fried pieces of eggplant and was Ok. The shrimp wonton was not at all worth the price for small pieces of wonton. Overall, some good dim sum options. You can skip both the shrimp wontons and the fried eggplant. When we arrived, there was no one to greet us at the entrance, after a minute or two, we called out hello hello, finally a man came out saying we can seat anywhere, and pointed at an empty table in an empty room with 2 large tables. My teenager daughter who usually is quite picky with food cannot get enough of the lobster fry rice and soup. I enjoy everything... The lobster here is amazing. They have live lobster cooked fresh. We ordered the Hong Kong style lobster and it was the best lobster we have ever had...and we've tried lots of good Chinese restaurants in the states that serve lobsters. We also ordered the fried rice with lobster paste and it was unique and outstanding. They also have combination options with dim sum, including AYCE dim sum. What a great find! We were tired from exploring Niagara Falls all day and wanted to get something Chinese and take out/ delivery. We needed some home comfort food and this place hit the spot. We had several items- shrimp wonton soup, lobster, sweet and sour pork chop, fried rice, some dim sum items. Everything was cooked fresh, service is very fast and welcoming. read more
