I have been going here for years! But this past week was very disappointing. We had a large table, a few from out of town but have been before and wanted to go back. Service: The waiter was not knowledgeable about the menu and seemed to be in a bit of a hurry, like he had somewhere to be and we were his last table. One person sat without an entry and he came and asked the customer what dish he was waiting for. The server served a French onion soup that was charred across the top, the cheese was black, and only offered "I have had it like that and liked it"! Two of us got mussels, the portion was smaller than usual ( I have gotten the several times before) the bread was way over toasted, and when we asked for a bit more of the jus, he came after a while with a cup of what looked like buttered water. My point is, the cooks were not up to usual par, and the waiter did not care about serving. We still gave a 20% tip, on a $500. + bill. But it was not deserved. This review is for the owner, Jay may need to check on the food end once in a while on a busy Friday night. read more

BUMPING on a Friday night but a bit of a mixed review. The bartenders were prompt, professional and quick and I know that because it took 20 minutes for our server to come over. My one weakness in menus is when restaurants have mussels: they, overall, were good but under seasoned and a bit fishy? A smidge of salt and lemon wedge from my husband's Caesar and we were off the races. Chicken Picatta was a bit dry (but it's not a fancy place so we won't hold that against them), and the beef on wreck was awesome but would appreciate a bit bigger of a container for the au jus than a ramekin. I'd come again but probably only sit at the bar. read more

As a wedding present, we received a gift certificate to The Place but had never been before. The setting is casual and there is a bar with lots of seating and an outdoor space when it's warm outside. My husband and I had a great experience and enjoyed the food so much! We had a couple of the seasonal cocktails, poached pear salad, crab cakes, the short rib, chicken piccata, and the vanilla creme brulee. Whoa! There wasn't a single dish that wasn't a 10/10. They all packed flavor and were well balanced. I mean we were so stuffed because we didn't want to leave a single drop on the plate. I don't know why it took us so long to dine here but we will surely be back. Highly recommend. read more

Stopped in for lunch on a warm afternoon. It was pretty quiet when we arrived, but it didn't take long for the place to fill up. The decor has that classic, cozy Irish pub feel with a bit of old-school charm. We shared the mussels and the mac and cheese. The mussels were great--no surprise there--but the real standout was the mac and cheese. The smoky gouda in the sauce gave it so much depth, and the whole thing was rich without being too heavy. We didn't expect to nearly finish the generous portion, but we absolutely did. I'm pretty sure this is the mac and cheese I'll be comparing all others to from now on. First of all the service was good so my experience here has nothing to do with the service as our server was attentive. I ordered a cheeseburger Medium and fries. The fries were so burnt that it was impossible to eat, I tried two fries and it was like eating portions of a well done potato. The burger was also overcooked and had a deep char but I tried it and it was definitely not medium. Not medium well and not well done, this was charcoal. I explained to the server and she agreed and took it off the bill. Highly disappointed knowing this is down the street from me because the restaurant is a gorgeous restaurant and it's in a unique location in the city. One of the best neighborhood pubs in Buffalo. We've been coming here for 4 decades and it has never disappointed. The menu is classic Buffalo fare from Hot Pepper dip to French Onion Soup and they do the critical Buffalo items (Wings, Weck, and Friday Fish Fry) right and proper. If you only have a few days in Buffalo, do not miss this place. Dinner with a cocktail and a beer is a surefire hit. Bartenders are excellent. read more

Wanted to follow up with photos from my last review. If anyone is like me we like to see a visual of what we're ordering. Here is the calamari (which was absolutely amazing). The Casian pasta (wherew really had no spice at all, but still very tasy), and the stuffed pepper steak sandwich. Which was absolutely delicious. Besides going on a super busy Friday night where you don't really see your server much and the seating could have been better we were right by the bar and felt congested. It was a overall great date night with good food. The layout is nice and the lighting is very low. I would have felt better sitting in the dinning area. The bar was just to busy for us. read more

I was very disappointed with my experience. For the price, the food was not good and did not meet expectations. The customer service was even worse. Our server never introduced herself and handled my straw with her bare hand before placing it directly into my cup, which I found unsanitary. Throughout the meal, she spoke to us in a way that felt condescending, as if we didn't know how to dine out. At one point, she demonstrated how to use the dip by touching our spoon and plate, which was inappropriate and uncomfortable. Rather than providing helpful service, it felt like we were being talked down to. What made the experience even more frustrating was that we barely saw our server. The only times she came to our table were the occasions when she was disrespectful. A busser checked on us more than our actual server did and was the person who brought us our takeout boxes. We received more attentive service from the busser than from the person assigned to our table. I am in the military and currently stationed in North Carolina, but I am originally from Buffalo and was visiting the area. I thought this would be a great place to eat, but unfortunately it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had. Ahh, the annual T&J trip. The food is generally not something to write home about so our go-to is to have just our drinks or share an appetizer as well. This time we went for early afternoon on a Saturday, mostly due to me traveling back to Rochester. I had tried to make a reservation, but the first available was 8:30 and it seemed like there was a weird gap in the afternoon. Well, now we know why. We got there a few minutes before 3 and there was no one at the hostess stand but quite a few open tables. We tried to investigate the bar area and by the time we grabbed someone to ask about getting a table, he said that he needed to ask. His answer, at 3:02, was that they don't seat any walk-ins from 3-4 because they have reservations starting at 4. Ultimately I wish they still had some bar area high tops because they know people are coming in for T&J this time of year. The holiday decorations are lovely, the service is solid, and the T&J were a bit heavier on nutmeg this year (but that wasn't a complaint for us). After standing for a bit, we were able to score a stool, so we could at least put our drinks on the bar. It was really starting to fill up as we were leaving around 4. Oh, and you *might* be able to get a mocktail, but it really depends on which bartender helps you out (one was great, one was flummoxed). read more

The buzz on this establishment is WAY overrated. The food is just ok. Good but not special. Been there three times. Had starters and drinks outside in the summer, bees swarming everywhere. Ate at the bar the second time and the bartender was terrible, I guess he had friends at the other end of the bar. Almost threw the menus to us. Last night was the last straw in my book. Like I said, the food is fine but no big deal. What really iced it for me is their "kitchen appreciation fee." What bs! It's only two bucks, but I would prefer to be able to "appreciate" on my own. If you want to get money for the kitchen raise the prices a little, they are high enough already but if that is the way you "appreciate" the kitchen it would be less irritating. This place has nice porch and outdoor seating... the service was fair to midland... our server was very pleasant and answered a multitude of questions, gave good suggestions but could have stopped by the table a bit more to refill beverages... We only ordered appetizers/starters... The traditional Mac and cheese was very good... it tasted smoky,flavorful, and was baked but creamy... there was no cheese pull on it, but the Ritz cracker topping added a bit of delight ... the portion was enough for a meal for two people, so it was worth the $14.00 price tag The crab cakes were only OK... two average size and average in flavor... the outside was perfectly crunchy, but that was the only real plus... there wasn't much crab or crab flavor to it, truly just average... deeming it not really worth the $18.00 price. I love the vibe at The Place. I was sad when I was seated in the back room with the other old people. I wanna feel young and sit near the bar with hip people! Wait staff is friendly. Decent beer options but this is def more of a cocktail place. My Old Fashioned had too many little ice cubes and was watered down. Stuffed pepper dip for an app is beyond addicting. And the short rib dinner is so good my plate looked like it went through he dishwasher when I was done. I cant wait to enjoy the patio. read more

My first review and first dinner outing of the New Year, so it's only right it's at The Place !! The Place has been a Buffalo staple for years !! Many of my friends said The Place was their grandparents old hang out spot. I'll say maybe about 10 years it got a major make over and we all love it !! They technically have 4 seating options, though it depends on weather. They have fire pit seating in their patio, porch seating, dinning room seating and the new area Ashland room. Last night I sat in the new Ashland seating area, it's was cozy with a fireplace but still had the fun and festive personality of the dinning room. I was super excited when I saw they were still serving Tom and Jerry's after the official season ended so I had to get one. Unfortunately, they had no more souvenir cups but I still enjoyed my drank!! Yes I said, drank,lol . I love how The Place does their Tom and Jerry's!! The cup is filled to the top, the meringue is light yet thick and party on the bottom!! If you know, you know,lol. They also have my second favorite seasonal drink, hot buttered rum !!! So smooth buttery and great alternative to nice winter drink if you aren't a fan of Tom and Jerry's. The food: normally I get the wings of course but today I got the steak sandwich and potatoes with peppers!! My steak was cooked just like I requested and like that they sliced the steak. The roll had like garlic spread on it which was really tasty, this sandwich melted in my mouth so tender and tasty. I'm a fries girl but I will NEVER order fries here again because those potatoes are slammin' !! The peppers, onions and nice crisp!! I literally devoured half before I even took a a bit of my sandwich!! My dinner companion got the fish fry, they loved!! It came with coleslaw, mac salad and fries !! Neither one of us finished our meals....though I definitely came close. I left 2 potatoes lol. Because we had to finish it off with the Creme Brule!!! They have a pretty solid Creme Brule and the size was pretty good too. They berries on top was just the perfect finishing touch. We left stuffed,happy and satisfied. My inaugural visit to The Place... I was invited to lunch, with reservations, and arrived after my dining companions enjoyed most of an appetizer of Mac & Cheese and a round of drinks. I ordered a Raspberry Fizz that arrived with a hunk of orange rind balanced on the glass (no pulp, just pith & rind). The rind had no benefit to the drink whatsoever and it was unwieldy compared to the delicate fluted glass. My entree was the Chicken Milanese, and sadly, my first few bites were burnt. The rest of the cutlet was fine, and the greens of the salad had a tasty dressing on them. After our meal and asking several times for empty dishes/glassware to be cleared, we enjoyed Tom & Jerry's. When I got up to use the restroom, I was shocked to see a giant roll of paper towels sitting in a puddle of water on the counter between the two sink basins and the first stall lock was completely missing. To top off my experience, not one but two staff members caught my purse strap (which was strung across the back of my chair and underneath my rain jacket), and nearly laid themselves out on the floor. All in all, I found the service slow, the food to be less-than fresh, and the overall experience to be not as expected. Returned to The Place this year to give their Tom and Jerry another try after a disappointing one last year. Party of six we decided we'd eat there too. I will just say that five out of six were very disappointed with their entrées. (The one that was fine was a salad ) Where do I begin? The lemon risotto was nothing but plain white rice. There was no cheese, no flavor. The banana pepper pasta was overly spicy so much so someone couldn't even eat it. She sent it back and was told that she would need to wait a long time for a different dish because they were busy. I ordered a chicken picatta and what I got was a cutlet with a scoop of picatta sauce on it. Salty, no lemon flavor or capers, which are supposed to be with lemon picatta. And lastly my friend ordered salmon that came so dry the bottom looked like shoe leather. They took off two dinners because of the complaints we made about them. They also charge the most out of any of the other establishments we've gone to for a Tom and Jerry. Their Tom and Jerry is very lackluster. I know they're supposed to be famous for it, but I can tell that out of eight stops so far this season testing Tom and Jerry's I would say The Place is at the bottom. Extremely cold batter, subpar alcohol and very little flavor other than the alcohol. On top of it, the service was absolutely terrible. Met with a grouchy server who showed very little interest when we talked about the disappointment we had with the dinners. She did not check on us. She seemed resentful that she was even there and that just set the tone for us, even trying to enjoy it. I will never go back and I will tell anybody who asks me where to go for a Tom and Jerry to stay away from The Place because it's just a bunch of hype. Love this gem. Cute location. 3 seating options, outdoor patio, outdoor covered patio, and inside. We went on Monday evening, and they were packed. I highly recommend making reservations. The service was amazing. Our server was so nice, attentive. They have a limited menu but seem to have daily specials. My husband wanted one of the specials, and when we got there, she advised us that one of the specials (scallops) only had one order left. She was nice enough to let us claim it before we had even put our drink order in! Started off with the crab cakes. They were amazing! The crab to filler was perfect tons of crab! The food was very good. Unfortunately, 2 of the things we ordered were specials but did get one regular menu item, and I had try the burger and ordered that to go. The scallop dish was so good. Never would have thought pistachios crusted scallops on a rutabaga puree would work, but it did! Got a filet it was yum! The spicy chicken pasta was very good. Had a higher heat level than I expected, but I love heat. If sensitive to heat order with caution. The burger that I took home was absolutely delicious. Stopped into this spot in Buffalo just for a drink and to try the French onion soup--and I'm so glad I did! The soup was incredible--rich, flavorful, and perfectly cheesy. Easily one of the best I've had in Buffalo so far. Even though the place was really busy, the staff was super friendly and welcoming. Had a great lunch at the place on Saturday. Sat at the bar and bantered with the bartender while enjoyed a FABULOUS burger. Son enjoyed gluten free French onion soup and GF Cajun pasta. Delicious and super sized portions - enough for lunch the next day too. Bar keep advised the owner has gluten allergies therefore lots of GF options on the menu. Honestly can't wait to go back. Too many options I need to try Loved the atmosphere as well. Could have sat on the large side patio but thought it a bit windy and wanted to watch the Bills preseason on TV. Great staff. read more

An overrated restaurant. Pricey too. A dinner entree does not come with a salad. Paid $32. for a plate of food consisting of a miniscule piece of over done chicken, a scoop of mashed potatoes and green beans . We ordered a side of salad for $14. The only highlight of our meal. Wine was carefully rationed for which I paid $12. a to glass. I know this spot has a following but the experience I have described will not happen again. We were finally able to stop and check this place out. We came for a drink before dinner. It's very cool and homey, because it's laid out like a house. It felt like you were visiting some friends instead of going out, in the best way possible. It was busy so we were able to grab some drinks and seat ourselves at a high top outside on the patio. It was a gorgeous fall night so it was perfect. I had a cocktail that combined mezcal and coconut. It was unique and delicious. The mezcal blended with the sweet coconut flavor perfectly. read more

Having moved to WNY about a decade ago, it was time to try a Tom & Jerry. For my first one, we decided to go to The Place. My wife, a Buffalonian, has been here before, but this was my first time. We sat at the bar, where I ordered the Buffalo-famous Tom & Jerry, whereas she ordered a Hot Buttered Rum. The Tom & Jerry was okay. They were generous on the alcohol, but I felt like it was missing the egg nog flavor, though I may need to try more from other establishments to make a more well-informed decision. My wife's Hot Buttered Rum was out of this world. Each drink was about $12/each. For my second drink, I ordered a Sullivan's Irish Stout, which I was a fan of. I've not had a meal here so I would consider visiting it in the future if we are in the neighborhood. read more

They stop seating people more than an hour before they close. Their hours should reflect when they're actually going to be open to provide food and service. I can understand if I arrived 10-15 minutes before close, but I arrived before 10pm for an 11pm close and was turned away. read more

Highlights for me are the lobster roll and Buffalo chicken sandwich. The saltiness of the lobster salad hit the spot. Oh, and I can't forget those extra crispy fries. The waitress recommended we try the crispy potatoes too. We ended up filling up on our sandwiches and fries, so we took the potatoes home for the next day. Yes, they were fantastic reheated on the stovetop. I love that this restaurant is right smack dab in a neighborhood. They have outdoor dining on the porch and tables with built-in fire tops to the side of the building. You can specify where you want to sit when making reservations via phone or online. I like how accommodating they are. The downside for me - the lighting is so dim inside. I actually used my phone flashlight for part of the meal until my mom said it was too awkward. Adore the vibes of this place. My husband and met two friends out for drinks and late lunch at the bar. espresso martini was delicious, and the Sauvignon Blanc was good too. Good selection of local and non local beers. Husband ordered a Ruben and he loved it, I got a burger which was recommended by the bartender. The Place has a friendly wait staff and many gluten free options. The ambiance is a bit dark (especially for reading a menu) and though they do have a lot, it is very small and it's likely you'll have to park a block or two away like we did... But, I guess that's a lot of places in Buffalo. We visited on a Thursday night at 6pm. We ordered some apps and entrees. Amongst them were french onion (which was thought to not taste very onion), pepper dip ( a group favorite being cheesy and flavorful), gf Mac & cheese which you couldn't tell was gf, blackened shrimp campanelli (tasty but the shrimp I wouldn't describe as blackened as it just looked & tasted sauteed) and the Reuben sandwich (good flavor, but not good meat distribution for the amount of bread). If you're gluten free, I think you should visit The Place as it seemed nearly every menu item could be prepared safely for you :) The bathrooms were clean. read more

Ambiance inside was so echoey and loud we ate out side. Service was perfect. The french fries were not edible, dark, weird. The beef on weck meat and bun were excellent.
