Just moved into the area and started buying a full sized cake once a week from Bloor West location. $40.00 is not an unreasonable amount for a cake that will last a week or feed 6 to 8 people. They have roughly 6 different cakes to choose from, and I tried and enjoyed them all. My favorite was the cookies and cream! Delicious. Suddenly, around the Holidays, the cookies and cream cake was missing from the display case for 2 weeks in a row. No problem. I'll email and order, except no one responded to the email. Perhaps the email went to another location or they were busy over the holidays and never saw it. I decided to just go in and buy whatever they had in the display. I settled on a plain Vanilla cake. The problem was it was most definitely stale! The quickest way to lose a guest is by selling substandard product at full price. A Bad business practice and foolish, because ultimately, I will never go back. Once confidence and trust is gone, there's no way back. read more

Picked up wife's order she phoned. It included 24 rolls. 2 bags of 12. Paid. Then parked 3 blocks away went to restaurant. Bill $90+ more than expected. At restaurant checked bill: we charged for 12 bags rolls not the 2 we ordered that I put in out green box. Bad weather walked to store. Saw manager. She would not correct the bill unless I brought her my full order so she could check it. Her demeanor superior, condescending: no effort to check our phoned in order. When I objected her response was: how do I know you didn't take 12 bags: Not happy I walked back, in snow slush to restaurant to get kesy, got to car get order and walk back to store. She made it right. Apologized. Said her owner made her do this. My response was I appreciated you made it right but your excuse does not cut it. I am not happy how you treated me. You could have resolved this without forcing me to go it. I did not tell her we had been customers for 30 years nor that we were done with her location. Happened to be in the area and decided to pop in for a baked treat. It was near the end of the day so they had some selection on the discount rack that seemed to be going quickly. However, we liked the apple turnovers in the front display and decided on those instead. The pricing was confusing as there were two apple turnovers packaged in a cellophane bag. The sign in front of it said "$1.99/each". I thought that meant $1.99 per bag but my partner thought it meant $1.99 per turnover. At checkout, it turns out I was wrong :( ..... too good to be true. Nevertheless we got the treats and had them the next day after a quick warmup in the toaster. The pastry was flaky and buttery. I liked the addition of the sugar on the top to give it an extra crunch. Unfortunately, there was very little apple inside so it lacked the tart and fresh flavors that I wanted from the filling. What draws me here is the predictable nature of the fantastic and affordable cakes. Sweet welcoming aroma of freshly baked bread when I stepped into Hot Oven Bakery on a Sunday afternoon! Great selections of pastries, cookies, pies and breads. The baked goods have more a rustic look and so pleasing to the eyes... Ended up getting 2 crisps (dried fruits and nuts) and an almond cookie.. they tasted A-OK... Nice bakery. Never been disappointed with their product.

I like the bread here better than the bread at Bread and Roses nearby. It's a great little bakery, really close to me and their bread is never stale, always super fluffy and great for french toast. However, I've tried their cookies and they're not the freshest. I'm a big fan of soft cookies and I have yet to experience that when buying them from Hot Oven. Also, to avoid confusion, this bakery used to be called Sunglow. But after a much needed renovation (it's much cleaner and organized in there now) they renamed the place Hot Oven. My favourite thing about Hot Oven are its big front windows displaying their wares. Mmmmm. That plus the wafts of fresh bread smell that hang around the corner of Runnymede and Bloor because of it. My husband and I have tried multiple items from this shop, the chocolate cookies, chicken empanadas, veg samosa, some pastries etc. The only thing we didn't like were the veg samosas because they were extremely oily. The standing was great though. It's our one stop shop for anything sweet or savoury. read more

I love getting bread from here. Whether it's the seeded bread say the front, the potato breads, the rye breads, they are all delicious! My favorite I once had this olive bread that was full of olives. It's not the round one, but it was a loaf. Never see it anymore though. Come here for you Montreal bagels (not made here but available). They aren't as good as the ones from Montreal but they often fit the bill. They also have pastries, and pies (savory and sweet). And one more thing that is amazing, the granola bars. Not cheap but definitely tasty. The people that work there are really nice. Even at 6p they are super nice. But wait, 6pm, that's when most of their breads are on sale for $2! read more

Very disappointed! Just to mention few things: 1) Sunday morning, 10:00, almond croissant sold out! 2) Since they renovated, slicing bread is a customer's job. I am not sure how safe it is? 3) Staff not trained properly. The girls are very friendly, they are trying very hard, but they are so young, inexperienced, not motivated. 4) Waiting in a line up for 15 min just for loaf of bread. Wandered in here last Friday and bought two pies and two tarts. The blueberry pie is hands down the BEST blueberry pie I've ever had -- wild blueberries, not too sweet filling, and just the right amount of flaky pie crust. Word of warning...beware of blue stains on your lips if you're trying to eat this pie in secret!!! Macaroni pie was not quite a "pie" per se, but it was pretty yummy and creamy (could use a bit more macaroni....and a bit more cheese). Apple tart had large chunks of apple and the crumble was light, perfect balance between crust and filing (which sometimes is hard to come by in tart form). Pecan tart had crispy pecans, but it was missing a runny gooey centre which I would expect from a pecan butter tart, maybe it just needed to be reheated. Tasty otherwise...and definitely coming back to sample the other deliciousness. Don't come in here hungry, everything smells of freshly baked bread and you're bound of overspend and overextend your waistline! But oh my, it'll be so worth it! read more

Great pastries, bad service. I love the place for their pastries. I first stopped by randomly while browsing shops in the west village and came across their almond florentines. They were absolutely heavenly. The perfect balance of crunch, delicate chocolate, almond slivers and sweet pieces of marachino cherries. Later I also tried their pistachio florentines, which are not as great as the almond ones but also good (they're a bit too sweet for my taste). They have a great selection of cookies, cakes, bars and even savoury pies like classic steak and kidney, steak and mushroom, beef, chicken... mac and cheese, lasagna, shepherd's pie... you name it. Their shortcoming is that they do not serve any decaf espresso drinks. They have decaf coffee which is good, but it disappointed me that they could not make a decaf espresso. That makes my visits limited to a time of day in which I can enjoy a regular coffee (i.e., before 3 pm). Their service is also very lacking. The last time I came in there, one of their servers was busy at the espresso machine with another girl, another was at the other end of the counter (opposite the cash) and another was attending to customers randomly, ignoring ones that have been waiting for some time (like me). I was ignored for a good 5 minutes (mind you, it wasn't busy at all) before I decided to take my money elsewhere. Freshly baked bread. And lots of pastries to go with it. But something about their products doesn't give me the homemade feel that I get with smaller non chain bakeries. Nonetheless it's one of the few places in HIGH park area that actually sells Challah (both braided and and loaf form) and a smaller chocolate orange version. It's actually a perfect size for the two of us for shabbat. For the conventional eater it's great. There's lots of choice but no gluten free options and there is one grape seed spelt bread that both I and my husband likes. Got one of the small pies once and it was also very good. Nice tasting filling and not too much crust. Of all the bakeries in the area I would come here firs t that is if they don't sell out by the afternoon. read more

I am in love with this place. Always smells like they're baking, I have yet to have anything less than excellent and the staff is super friendly. I forgot my wallet here and they were swift enough to notice and put it aside for me for when I realized and came back. Super happy about that. Having now spent many months trying the various bakeries in the neighbourhood, I can with utmost confidence state that Hot Oven Bakery is not only the best in this area for brilliant breads, sweets (AND perogies) they are also bang on with consistent and lovely customer service! Hot Oven Bakery is doing it right! Their team always looks like they love their jobs whether it is lined up out the door or almost empty. They acknowledge every guest with a friendly word and are familiar yet professional. I have been made to feel like a regular customer since the first day I visited. We discovered this place as we were walking along Bloor West. We were only discussing which bakery to get bread from when we were led in by the delicious ,delicious bread smells coming from this one. We tried the pumpkin baguette which was super. We also tried the Linzer cookies, which were even better than ones I'd had in other bakeries. Cats ate some of our nice pumpkin bread, so we came back for more. We also tried their challa which was quite good. Also tried their red velvet cupcakes, which were moist but haven't topped others that I've eaten. Baklava was ok, too. Will definitely be back for the Linzers and baguettes. read more

Rather disappointed by their bread. I've gone there a couple times when in the area just to see what they have and I always walk out because it's just not what I'm looking for. They've got a good selection of bread but it's to much like the stuff I could find at the supermarket. It's kinda soft and insipid. Had a jalapeno cheese loaf and an olive loaf and honestly the parbaked olive loaf I can get at Loblaws from Ace bakery is about the same. Maybe I need to try them again but I just don't feel like it. It's generally good, but today I was short-changed on my samosas. I ordered two vegetable samosas and 1 beef and paid my $6.00, only to find on opening the very nicely packaged bags at home that she had given me only 1 each. I am definitely peeved. We live in the area and have been visiting Hot Oven Bakery for over a year. Overall, it's hit or miss, with the (really) good stuff keeping us coming back almost every week! Hit: Friendly, efficient service. It's often busy but they move people through. Bread selection. Olive Bread and Jalapeño Cheese Bread are awesome. Beef Samosas, very tasty! PIES AND TARTS! Raspberry and Blueberry are the best pies. Apple and passion fruit tarts are great too. Croissants (in the morning). Chocolate ones are great! None of that cheap filling. Miss: Cookie selection. Assorted, but we found the cookies looked a lot better than they tasted. They didn't taste bad, just bland. Custard Tarts (Pateis de Nata). Don't know if they changed bakers, but they were good a year ago, then inconsistent... now just consistently bad. Baklava. Good taste but dry! **No credit cards. Found this bakery when hunting for marble rye bread which they had. They have all kinds of options and the staff is really nice. Parking can be tough if your driving in but you can park nearby at the green P lot. read more

I have been a customer since the old location at Cloverdale mall. Muffins and cookies usually. The store is immaculate and the aroma really gets me in the mood to eat some pleasure food. My husband and I are from out of town and we have visited this bakery a couple of times. The large glass cabinets displaying the delicious bake goods invite you into a warm environment. They are a very busy bakery but don't feel rushed. Just take a number and they will serve you individually and at your pace. The custard tarts are really good. The empire cookies are one of my very favorite. That with a cup of tea in the afternoon is a grand way to spend with a friend or two. The manager here is very sweet and I personally watched her as she took note to make sure all her patrons were pleasantly waited upon. I would highly recommend this bakery. read more

Sunglow Bakery might get lost in the crowd of Bloor West Village bakeries, but it's been around for a while for a reason. They still bake good stuff here, even if the store may not look as slick as neighbouring competition like Bread & Roses. My favourite at Sunglow has always been the sweet stuff, like cookies (though the bread is fine too). I've got a lot of fond memories of devouring their tasty gingerbread men (painted like the latest superheroes and cartoon characters) as a kid. read more

This place always smells wonderful. The artisan breads are not the cheapest but they are expertly made and very pleasing to the eye (nicely shaped loaves) as well as to the palate. Mousses and pies are good here too, and we like the apricot horns. read more

I've been here many times before and never disappointed. Great bread, sweets are terrific, and they also do a number of savoury products that are delicious. My favourite item though is the orange chiffon cake. Light as air, incredibly moist, with an incredible orange zest glaze that is heavenly. Highly recommend! read more

I enjoyed this bakery when it was the previous "Sunglow Bakery". Sure it was less bright and not as fresh/new, but it had better quality baked goods. Customer service was also better. My first 'bad' experience at the new "Hot Oven Bakery" was when I went to buy banana bread. I asked what the loaf was (it didn't have a label). The woman behind the counter said "banana bread but there's no bananas in it". I thought to myself how is that possible. I could smell bananas. I bought it anyway. Foolish me. I brought it to work and was embarassed - NO BANANAS! I should have listened. Obviously they must have just injected banana flavour into it. That's why it was so heavy and it also made sense why I was charged by the weight of it! I stopped going there. I tried again a few weeks ago (decided to give them a try again). Customer service was horrible. The woman behind the cash asked if someone (who wasn't even in line but chatting with someone at the entrance) could go ahead of me. Excuse me? I said no. She said she'd been here longer. I said no. She's busy over there talking to someone else. She's not in line. WTF? I bought a so-called "apple caramel coffee cake", again for the office. Not a speck of apple in it.. and it was dry! That's the last chance they get. I'll try the bread. It seems like others like it. Maybe I'll dare chance giving that a try.. or not. read more
