I've been getting my hair cut by Jess for over a year now, and I don't see why I'd ever stop. She is so knowledgeable, friendly, and talented, and I always leave feeling great. It's clear she has a handle on different techniques/hair types, and provides useful advice and product recommendations. It's also clear she cares to take the time and effort to make sure her customers are getting what they want, while considering their hair type/color/etc. I have fine hair, but a lot of it, with basically no volume, and Jess has helped me to actually like my hair through her cuts, styling, and product recommendations. She did an amazing balayage on my hair over the summer, which I plan to do again in a few months. The price for the balayage was comparable (or lower) to what I've seen in the area, and certainly less expensive than the Boston area. The price for a haircut was significantly lower than the Boston area and the quality of service and cut is drastically better than I've had at salons near Boston. Pam and Maddy are also so friendly and the atmosphere is always fun and relaxing (such a nice contrast from the snobby or intimidating atmosphere I've experienced at some salons). The Hot Set Hair Studio is a very accomplished salon. This is the second time going in there. As with a lot of people during covid-19 I lost my hairdresser, she just retired. She was a one-person shop and decided it was time. After 20 years with the same hairdresser it was kind of tricky finding a new home. I knew on my first visit to the salon I had found a great place. The first time I went in a few months back. Pam and her staff were very welcoming and knowledgeable about their craft of hair styling, cutting and conditioning one hair. For my first appointment I wasn't quite ready for a cut and a perm so I went in for a hair conditioning treatment. That was a very nice experience, they use warm towels on your neck while getting your hair washed. They have lots of different treatment options for your hair conditioning, it depends on your situation. On my second visit I went and had a full perm it was done perfectly. My straight hair is no longer straight, has a new style and I'm ready for it to grow into itself as I like my hair a little longer. Since I had been to a couple hairdressers before I found this place it wasn't quite cut the way I liked it. Now it has style, and nice and curly the way I like it. This place has easy access too, it might not look it from the front but if you go park in the back of the building there's only one step in. If you're in the market for a new hairdresser I highly recommend giving this place a try. *Next time I go in I'll update this post and add some pictures. read more

Excellent experience here. From the consultation, I knew I would be in good hands. Jess asked just the right questions: what look am I going for, how do I typically style my hair, do I have a reference picture, etc. Then she consulted with Pam on the best technique to color my hair while minimizing damage, which I appreciated. In some other places they try to force some kind of nourishing treatment onto you but at Hot Set Hair Studio, it's clearly about getting you the results you want and for you to have a good experience. Everyone was friendly, upbeat and welcoming. I got the most beautiful color and cut from Jess, who made my vision a reality. I am happier with the outcome than I could have imagined. The salon is beautiful inside and there are some details that show that they value your experience. Upon arrival, I was offered refreshments and had a delicious coffee. The towel that goes under your neck at the sink is warmed, and there is a soothing spa-like ambience. Most of all, you can tell that the stylists work as a team, and that many of the clients keep coming back for the excellent service and experience. The staff is very friendly, the waiting room is comfortable, and they'll give you courtesy reminders about an appointment if you schedule it in advance. While this place primarily caters to women, they also do haircuts for men. I admit that, like a lot of guys, I don't give much thought to the kind of haircut I want. This means that I usually provide guidance about as substantive as "make it shorter," but Danielle has the patience and tact to elicit further details about my preferences, and I've always left very satisfied with my new hair cut. I highly recommend Danielle based on personal experience, but I hear good things about the other stylists. Going to Hot Set is a way to get a good hair cut at a reasonable price, and an excuse to spend time in the presence of some friendly, good looking ladies. read more

Jess is a miracle worker. I'm very bad at articulating what I want my hair to look like, but she is great at interpreting and coming up with ideas to achieve the desired look. She has great attention to detail with both cut and color. She also cuts my husband's hair and it always looks great. The prices are reasonable for what you get (expect in the neighborhood of $180-200 for women's cut and color, but places in Boston can be way more than that). The rest of the staff are all really friendly and the place is really well kept-up. Just worth mentioning: the salon is at the top of a large staircase and there is no ramp or elevator. read more

The ladies here are amazing. They are all trained in the latest styles and coloring techniques, which I found out the hard way, is SUPER important. I have finally matured and settled into a salon. I still have my gypsy ways about me, and will bounce between the stylists here. Mostly because I am last minute nellie when making my appointments. My two favorites are Jeannie and Danielle. Jeannie is a spectacular colorist and does a great job with the cut. Danielle is a sassy young thing that is not afraid to do her thing when you say "Chop it" and will find the perfect color for you. Been going to Danielle for over a year now and Love her! I never had a consistent salon or stylist before Danielle. I now know it was because I hadn't found the right one! I am never rushed and she always picks up personal coversation right where we left off last visit! She will offer new ideas but never pushes. The staff is always very excited about the most recent shows they've attend and techniques they have learned. I went for a haircut here based on yelp reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. I had a haircut with D or Danielle. She is a sweet natured girl who listens to what you want. I have thick, wavy to curly hair. She cut it beautifully. In my eyes, a good haircut is one that does not frizz my hair and that does not require too much styling. I've never really been to a studio with such an airy, positive energy the way I have with this one. It is always a turn off when you walk into a hair salon and there is a sense of judgment or caddy attitudes amongst hairdressers, but this place was so warm and welcoming, and that translated between customer to stylist, as well as stylist to stylist. My hairdresser, Jess, was also very skilled and really listened to what I wanted. I showed her a photo of a woman with a black and purple balayage, and she replicated it EXACTLY how it looked - it was pure talent! She asked to see the photo several times so that she could mimic the shade and tone of purple I wanted, and I appreciated that she really wanted to get it right. The price seemed comparable to other salons I've been to (balayages generally aren't cheap, unfortunately). I left really happy and satisfied, I'm definitely returning! Nope, 10 stars! I really miss these ladies.... phenomenal people and sooooo talented..... I can not believe it has taken me this long to sit down and write this Yelp review. Ugh, I feel terrible about that. And I went to them for like 10+ years!!! I think I posted it on their Facebook page instead. (Uh DUH. And that's what work stress does to a mind...) Anyway, if you do not want to travel into Boston and want a top of the line style and color, LOOK NO FURTHER. Honest. I live in the Austin area now and have found a Paul Mitchell salon ~ not the same. I'm being patient. You can tell they were trained the same way. Truly awesome people too. But my color keeps coming out dark and it makes me sad :( So I went on the internet and started to reminisce about how awesome the Hot Set ladies were. It was like visiting girlfriends every 6-8 weeks who knew exactly how to do your hair the way you liked it. My stylist was Dee. Today was my very first time coming here and it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! Pam is fantastic in every way, shape and form and totally saved my frizzy, unruly, grrr hair! :) I got the keratin treatment for the very first time and I will most definitely be coming back again and again. I have been going to this salon for 10 years.I have medium textured wavy hair which is NOT easy to cut as I learned from so many years of terrible haircuts from other salons. Pam is my girl.I She always gives me a haircut that looks amazing and not just the day its done but she cuts it in a way that for months it looks gorgeous. She is also a master colorist,mixing me a signature blonde that receives compliments on a regular basis.Pam takes her time,she truly cares and listens about what you want,I just can't say enough about her talent and knowledge as she has taken my hair from something I used to dread dealing with to what is now what I consider my best attribute.The staff at Hot Set are at this point, friends. The staff were very friendly and I appreciated their hard work in staying late to finish my hair, gave me some free swag at the end, etc., but overall I am pretty disappointed with my hair color. The cut is fine. As far as color goes, I have dark brown hair and wanted to go for an emma stone red (not orange). Unfortunately my hair turned out eastern european looking with a harsh dark red sheen (friends: "I didn't want to say anything but yeah, you look like a Russian mom!" I'm a 25 year old grad student, not a mom.) On top of the Eastern European red, there are some clashing copper-orange streaky highlights (i.e.streaky = ~1cm centimeter wide strips spaced ~1 inch apart). I feel bad writing this review because the girls worked hard and everything, I just kind of wish I'd had the more experienced colorist instead (she did advise on color mixing when she walked by and was asked though, so maybe she would not have been any better!). After 1 wash my hair is fading to brown with orange streaks. Yuck. It looks unprofessional like I did it out of the box - not like a $140 cut and color! Did NOT expect it to cost this much either. read more

I used to go to D'Iorios and they constantly messed up my hair so I went to a long-time friend at Hot Set who I KNEW would do a great job.. Consistently. I should have switched salons YEARS AGO!!!!! The professionalism is just unreal at Hot Set. The stylists know their product, fresh trends, and they are always doing the exact cut/style you tell them to do. D is the best hairstylist I have ever had! I have had some extremely rude, unprofessional, and disgraceful "hair stylists" before but D is a diamond in the rough. She always gives me a great cut and always takes her time! She always gives me great suggestions when I am in the mood to switch things up. She hears your concerns and questions then speaks with high intelligence and education. You always get an amazing, pretty, end result with D! Prices are very reasonable and cannot be beat. Pam, the owner, is so sweet and has really set the bar extremely high for the other salons in the area. There is no comparison, Hot Set is THE place to go for all your hair needs, including products.
