On a mini NM road trip which brought us to the self proclaimed chile capital of the world...Hatch, NM. How does one pass through Hatch without sampling the largest cash crop in the State? Among the roadside stops Donna Summers guided us from afar to our lunch destination...Hot Stuff. We began our meal with wonderfully flavorful chips & salsa which rang true to the name. We tried the breakfast burrito smothered Christmas style and a bean and cheese burrito with chopped green. We also sampled a bean tostada. Salsa was amazing, tostada was pretty good too. The food was very good. I got 2 burritos thinking that for the price they were probably small and I was wrong. I think the burritos are made on homemade tortillas. They were so good, I got one of chicharron and one of barbacoa. My kid ordered the green chile burger and he loved it and is now asking to have all his burgers made with green chile. They served chips and salsa and the salsa was to die for! I wanted to drink it. The service was outstanding from the server. I don't remember his name but he had a small tattoo by his left eye, he made us feel welcome by interacting with us with small chit chat and made us laugh making us feel like we were family. This place is delicious! We stopped to buy some red chiles and ask the girl walking what she recommended. She said everyone goes to Sparkys for burgers. We told her no thanks. Then she said if we like real Mexican food and aren't afraid of heat to go to Hot Stuff. I'm glad she did! It was like pulling up a chair and my Abuelitas house. That's how authentic everything was. We wanted to try some authentic red Chile so I ordered the Comida corrida which came with rice, beans, pork red Chile, a bowl of Caldo de Res and a flour tortilla. My husband had the pozole which is authentic with its ingredients and red slightly spicy broth. The tortilla was a homemade Gordita style one and my husbands soup came with cabbage, lime and pan birote. It was all fantastic!!! I wish I had more room to eat more! They also have a cute little store attached and that is what you see from the road so that can be why it may be passed up. But I'm telling you, don't pass it up! Authentic, authentic, authentic! Based on the reviews and craving Mexican food, we picked this place but it was so disappointing. The tamale on the combination plate was hard, the retried beans were runny, the rice lacked flavor, and the flour tortilla was over cooked. All our meals were very tasty! And homemade, even chips which were great! Wide variety of items to choose from. Kids had French toast that came with fresh fruit eggs and sausage/bacon. I am from and live in El Paso so I am not sure why my tagline is saying San Francisco. We went to Hatch to buy some chili and stopped by at this diner. I am handicapped and have trouble ambulating. I liked they had a gift store connected to the restaurant and - in reality - this is why we chose it - shop and rest. I ordered a combo (chili relleno, enchilada, and taco) and my sister ordered chili relleno. Hands down the chili relleno--they were fresh and not greasy. Plus I liked they were not smothered in sauce. You can order this way but we chose not to and I am glad. People were friendly and service was good. Just like mom's....normally when I leave Mexican restaurants, we look for ice cream to help settle our stomach but this is not the case. So if you have a sensitive stomach, this is a good place to go because the food is good and it does not feel heavy in your stomach. Their gift shop is a nice quaint, good prices, good variety, and very friendly people. The prices are very reasonable. They have pots for plants and I have quite a few I purchased in El Paso but I wish I waited because prices were much better. Owner is very nice and helpful. He was unloading product, saw me struggling, and ran to help. There is not a lot in Hatch but this is one place you will want to visit even if you do not eat. They have a number of Mexican curious that are well-priced. Cafe was small, quaint and clean. Ordered coffee but was told there was none. So I ordered Ice tea. Christine, our waitress was pleasant and took out order, I initially ordered pork pesole but was told it was also out. Also, after 5 mins of recving my tea, the people who just sat down next to us recvd coffee as their drinks. I ordered chicken enchiladas and when it came out, it was cheese enchiladas. Visiting the area. I'm from El Paso but now live in Austin. Hot Stuff was just the fix I needed for authentic Mexican food that I miss so much. My niece got the chile rellenos smothered with green Chile sauce. I got the beef flautas and a bean tostada w/ ground beef. DELICIOUS!! She and I shared tastes. The Chile rellenos were sooo good. A lot of places kill you with the spiciness of the green chiles. I prefer flavor to heat. And these rellenos are great! My flautas were the double length came with guacamole, sour cream, and beans. Was recommended this place by a woman in a gift shop, and I am so glad I asked her where to go. At first glance, the restaurant looks like every other one, and it looks disappointing when you get inside. There was only one man serving all the tables, but he was very polite and asked everyone how their food was often. I ordered a torta with Carne Asada and it was The BEST torta I've ever had. Me and my honey absolutely love this place. Clean, fast and friendly. He says this place has the best chili rellenos he's ever had and he is picky! Very friendly waitress. She was attentive, got our order right the first time and even brought me extra tomatoes and cheese without me asking for my skillet. Totally and completely recommend, the chile bean stew is amazing, hot, spicy and so good!!!! We visit Hatch to buy our chile and usually go to Sparky's but this place is a definite YES! This restaurant got a 4 for service - overall a 3 - very friendly and place was very clean. Food - a 3. I ordered huevos rancheros. Eggs can perfect over easy but the hash browns not cooked thoroughly - raw on inside- could not eat center - only edges. They did with lots of chunky meat and it was good, not too spicy. My husband ordered the pancakes with eggs, over easy & perfect & ham. Pancakes big but a little dry & cured ham was also a little over cooked & dry. My wife and I stopped here for a late lunch while driving through Hatch. We usually don't expect much in a small town like Hatch and, I'm sad to say, we weren't disappointed. It wasn't much. Two of the higher rated cafes (Valley Cafe and Pepper Pot) on Yelp had already closed for the day and Hot Stuff was across the street. I had the combo plate of taco, enchilada and tamale. The chicken on the taco was so dry it was almost inedible. The tamale was also dry. The cheese enchilada was decent. My wife had the Tacos con Barbacoa, which were passable. We shared the salad with grilled chicken which also had very dry pieces of chicken The place was clean and the server was pleasant, but we'd have been better off going to the local Subway shop. read more

Ate there Saturday, not what I'm use to from a restaurant, my wife ordered the carne asada plate, the meat was tuff she had trouble cutting it much less chewing it, so she sent it back and ordered the green chile stew/soup... The soups are ready made but still took a good 20 minutes to get it, I had a red chile burrito, you pay for what you ask for, just meat with slight sauce rolled in a tortilla... I asked for red sauce on the side after the fact, was charged for it, no problem with that I guess I should have specified I wanted it smothered... The chile con queso dip, yuck, I'm certain it was can nacho cheese sauce and green chile thrown in there, the service was horrible, weren't offered extra chips or salsa, no drink refills, but it gets better, I had to get up and ask for boxes to go, surprised I wasn't charged for them as well, went to pay of check, more than I had expected, so asked for an itemized bill, they were charging me $5.00 for the returned meal which only a small bite was took from it, I refused to pay it, what ever happened to the customer is always right, the cashier argued with me that they ate from the plate in the back, which I thought was nasty to begin with, but she assured me it was not tuff, I'm guessing she is use to it, and then told me it was common practice to charge for returned meals if customer is dissatisfied with it, must be a Hatch thing, I have traveled the US and never have I been charged for rarely returned meals, and it takes a lot for me to return a meal, usually I get apologies for the bad meals. I guess this wouldn't have bothered me so much except that there was a table near by which were friends with the server, they returned something and I over heard her tell them she wasn't going to charge them for it... Hot Stuff owners in Hatch, I recommend you train your staff in customer service... and rethink your policy on returned bad meals... Never again... read more

Finally made it to Hatch, NM! Pepper Pot was reccomended, but they closed at 3. Starving, we just went across the street to Hot Stuff. Lucky for us!!!!! We were able to sit on the patio with our dog. Our server was informative, and efficient. The green chili stew is absolutely delicious! Huge bowl of steaming stew, chock full of flavor (just right amount of heat), pinto beans and pork. Handmade tortillas warm and toasted. The chili rellenos were light and fluffy, not greasy at all. Our server advised us to go to Chili Fanatic down the street for some fresh chili to take home.
