I was searching in Las Cruces NM for a good burrito and found this little gem. Although they don't have a "California burrito" on the menu, the brothers gladly made me one to my liking. I must say they nailed it! Nice and tasty and full of herbs and spices. What impressed me about this neighborhood joint is their willingness to make it just how you like it. All the hallmarks of a Craft Burrito place. They also specialize in an assortment of burgers and I bet if I come back they'll make me one just how I like it. Cute place, nice people. Unfortunately, about 8-9 hours after eating our late lunch (had nothing to eat after our late lunch) I became very sick with diarrhea. I have not been this sick in many years. I had nothing, food wise, prior to that meal out of my ordinary food. Hubby had the same thing - minus the lettuce and tomatoes. Decided to stop by to grab a bite before heading to White Sands National Park. The exterior is unassuming but they make one of the best burgers. I ordered a hamburger and it came with fries. The fries are definitely not frozen. You can tell they make it themselves. The hamburger was fantastic. All the ingredients were fresh and perfectly balanced. This looks like a hole in a wall but we stopped based on the reviews. It didn't disappoint. The green Chile cheeseburgers were delicious. They were perfectly cooked and so juicy. I had a patty melt and my husband had the regular burger. It's also reasonably priced. Win win! read more

Family owned. Burritos were good but the bacon and egg breakfast burritos had no cheese (?). I'm glad I asked to add potatoes. I'm used to a breakfast burrito having potatoes and cheese in it but maybe that's not the Las Cruces way. As a single woman I was slightly alarmed by all the bars on the building (see picture) but it makes sense since all the walls are glass. Way too easy to break into otherwise. The food is delicious! We had the enchiladas and green Chile cheeseburger. The burger was that old-school Mexican kitchen hamburgers that I grew up with. I ordered a pint of their salsa to-go, the one that comes out with the chips . The staff were very friendly and polite. Definitely recommend to visitors if wanting a local hole-in-the-wall taste. We were in town and looking for a local authentic place to grab some breakfast or brunch, and this one popped up as a top rated spot. And it did not disappoint! Don't let looks deceive you, while it is a small unassuming location with a wraparound drive-through, it also has a lot of seating inside which is where we were able to grab our meal. The man working there was incredibly attentive and responsive, I can check on us multiple times and with a smile. He even made great conversation and gave us tips for things to do in the area. We ordered the huevos rancheros as well as Chile Rellenos - both amazing options! Well we were the only ones in the dining room, the drive-through heavy steady stream of people ordering lots of food, so clearly we were onto something that everyone knew about! El Jacalito is small and unassuming, but the food is SO good. Our party of four had four different entrees and all were delicious! I had the carne asada tacos with calabacitas and guacamole. The carne asada was tender and well seasoned. The calabacitas had a hint of spice and were a hit. The guacamole is definitely made fresh and is smooth and a perfect compliment to the tacos. My husband said his burrito was one of the best he has ever had. My son raved about his cheese quesadilla and my daughter loved her burger. The fries are definitely fresh and house made. The food is amazing. Straight out of Mexico, a great hole in the wall. Great place to stop and grab a quick bite. The location is very very small, not the greatest decor but it works because it's a mom & pops hole in a wall place but it could use a face lift. Bathroom is so so small it's non-handicap accessible. The owner runs the register, helps in the kitchen & brings out your food & drinks. You can tell he really cares about the place although its not much. Service is great. I hope the owner makes enough money to move to a bigger location, it would really do this restaurant some justice. Very very underrated place mostly because it's judged by its cover. Called in my order & drove thru to pick up a couple breakfast burritos (ground beef & potato and pollo a la parilla) from Jacalito earlier today. Both burritos were nice and full. The beef and potato was mostly meat unlike some places that will go heavier on the cheaper potato ingredients. The green salsa that was offered on the side complimented the flavors well. The pollo (chicken) burrito was good too but completely different with chicken, onions, tomatoes & lettuce (opted for no cilantro). My personal preference would have been to add some more spice (maybe add some jalapeños) but still tasty, although I liked the beef better. Service was quick and hospitable! This is a good place for home style fresh cooked New Mexican food. The atmosphere is nothing special, so go for take out if that is important to you. We started with chips and guacamole. The chips were fresh fried with excellent fire hot green salsa so we ordered some guacamole to tame it down. The chips were not salted which I appreciate. The guacamole had big chunks of avocado with a hint of lime and no other fillings, this was definitely freshly mixed. I had the enchiladas Christmas style, the red sauce was my favorite and had a kick. The green sauce had hints of lime and tomatillo though I wished it had more green chili. The corn tortillas were excellent and tasted homemade. Overall, good food and good value. read more

Great little joint for authentic New Mexico cuisine without any pomp & circumstance. They have takeout and dine in options, fast friendly service and great food! I had the combination plate "Christmas style". It was outstanding. I like the red Chile pork the best, spicy and flavorful. Green Chile enchilada was good as well. Beans were creamy, rice was standard. Taco meat was a little salty and shell was a little thin but it served its purpose. Chips and green salsa were on point. I can't believe I have lived here for years and missed this place! It does look like a dive and its in an older part of town, but the food was SO good, so fresh! We had the fried jalapeño burger and the mushroom swiss burger and a side of calabacitas. The burgers were gorgeous as well as delicious and the fries were made fresh from potatoes (I asked). Prices were great and service was super! We went at 6pm on a Friday night and had the place to ourselves. I bet they are real busy for breakfast because that menu looked wonderful too.
