I will never go here again. I placed a takeout order and my husband picked it up. The restaurant gave him the wrong order and we did not realize it until he got home. To make matters worse, they charged us for that order instead of the one I had actually placed, which ended up being almost double the cost. When I called to explain what happened, communication was a major issue from the start. Instead of helping resolve the mistake, the woman I spoke with immediately blamed my husband for taking the order that was handed to him from behind the counter. I explained that I was not asking for a full refund, only for the charge to be adjusted to match the order I had originally placed. The conversation then got even more weird. She asked why I had sent my husband to pick up the food instead of going myself and told me, "That's how it works in the States." I was shocked by the comment. I was home taking care of sick kids, why does it matter who picked it up?She also told me that if I did not drive the 10 miles back to the restaurant, I would not receive any adjustment. When I tried to explain the situation again, she hung up on me. I understand that mistakes happen. What matters is how a business handles them. Being given the wrong order was frustrating, but being blamed for it, spoken to disrespectfully, and then hung up on was far worse. This is a solid Chinese takeout restaurant! I get the hunan chicken almost every time. Full of veggies (broccoli, mushrooms, water chestnuts, carrot, snow peas, maybe onion) , a decent amount of chicken has been (I think) velveted which means it has corn starch on it before cooking making it really tender in a delicious sauce. You can't beat the lunch special which includes plain or fried rice, an enteee, soup. Super value and very tasty! read more

However, especially with just picking up, those are brief and they clearly focus on the food - where it counts. This was our first time to try Hot Wok. We ordered online. Easy. They provided an exact time when the order would be ready. It was. Ordered General Tso chicken (white meat option) and Chicken in Garlic sauce. Both were very good, portions were huge and price was reasonable. I had ordered twice cooked pork from Hot Wok and I wasn't happy with the overcooked pork, the flavor was okay. But the pork was tough (reminiscent of shoe leather). l thought, well it did say twice cooked.... I ordered Hunan Pork and it was the same exact flavor and the same exact shoe leather consistency. I didn't go here initially because it put me off but it could happen when cooking. We finally went and have been pleased every time we go. We visit hot wok at least once a month. This is our go to Chinese for take out. It's hot and tasty. Nothing fancy but it satisfies. It's consistently good. We order the Mongolian beef, moo shu pork (wrapper are not great but the filling is yummy), chicken and broccoli. Oh we also like the combination lo mein. Its always a pleaser in our home. Every order we try to place through "qMenu" results in them not being able to find a driver to deliver and we have to either cancel or got pick up. Really sad but we won't be ordering here anymore. After developing a severe wheat allergy a few years ago, it's been a slow process to trust restaurants. Gluten free is a good start. I talked with the owners at Hot Wok and their kindness and flexibility in making me anything I could eat was the greatest. Now when I go in, I am treated with big smiles and concern for my health. If you know where the Giant and Wing Shop in Purcellville is, you'll be able to find Hot Wok. As I was driving through one afternoon, I decided I would stop by and try out this little Chinese joint. I'm always on a mission to find good Hot and Sour Soup and Kung Pao Chicken. I walked in and was greeted right away. I was the only one dining there. There are not that many tables to eat at. While I was waiting for my food, people were coming in for take out. As with new Chinese joints, I went with my staple for testing. Hot and Sour Soup and Kung Pao Chicken. I ordered both as well as an order of egg rolls and just for kicks the Wonton Soup. I sat back and waited for my food. My soups came out first. The Hot and Sour soup worried me at first. The color seemed way too light and by the looks of it had way too much corn starch because it had a gelatinous texture to it. On the other hand it did have a fair amount of tofu, wood ear mushrooms, egg, and so on. I took a sip and the broth actually had decent flavor. I was surprised, it was better then I expected. Overall decent, not great, but not bad. The wonton soup broth was good, but I'm not a fan of these big chewy wontons. I'm more of the fan of the smaller ones. The egg rolls came out next. These were straight from the fryer. They were super hot, crisp, and not greasy. Flavor wise, it was good. Now the Kung Pao finally came out. First off I noticed the veggies. As most who have read my other reviews. I'm a purist for authentic Sichuan Kung Pao, which is chicken, peanuts, and scallions, all in a soy and vinegar base sauce. This Kung Pao had a thick reddish coating of sauce. More in lines with the Americanized style with plum or hoisen sauce. The chicken itself was tender and not dry. Flavor wise, for Americanized style it wasn't bad. Tone down the sweetness and I think it would be better. Price wise this place is cheap. Too bad I don't work near here, they have lunch specials under $5 bucks. Overall this place is ok, I'd go back.. read more

Apparently their driver was not working that night, so despite not being able to get delivery we still ordered and I went and picked it up. The food was okay. I got the Kung Pao Chicken, which was a bit underwhelming and was a bit mushy on the chicken. The chicken could have used a bit more cook time to crisp it up a bit. The chicken to veggie ratio was good, but the spice level could have been a bit higher IMO. My wife got the Beef and Broccoli, which was bland and tasteless. The sauce seemed like it was made in a hurry and had an over abundance of flour taste to it. Overall the portions were enough to fill our bellies and move on. This place is horrible! From the lady at the front counter that had an open wound, and was messing with it, to the teenie weenie shrimp . I bought my son the sweet and sour shrimp for his New Year's Eve meal, and it was terrible! The only saving grace was the fortune cookie and rice. Sometimes we eat there with the plastic utensils and sometimes we get take out. We have a few standards -- kung pao chicken and eggrolls -- that we use as the reference for Chinese restaurants. The kung pao was hot and good mix of chicken and veggies, but was fairly tame wrt to peppers (kung pao should have visible chunks of peppers and be fairly spicy). The eggrolls were crisp and well-filled; a bit on the greasy side, but not out of line for fast food Chinese. Condiments were available, but the only spicy one was mustard; fine for the eggrolls, but not a lot of help for the kung pao. On the weekends, the composition of some dishes changes as they try to use up leftover supplies -- lots more celery on the weekends. Quantities are fairly generous, and there are lunch specials with soup or eggroll and your choice of rice. Service was competent and got things out in a timely manner. It's a small place, so only 3 tables fit. You'll want to go outside rush hours if you want to eat there. Pricing is in the $7-9 range for a meal. Overall, pretty decent. Best of some mediocre options, but for the price, it works. read more

We've been getting take away from here for the last eight years. Really good "cheap Chinese" as we call it. This is not on the same scale as full restaurant Chinese obviously, but it's quite good. We always share a large wonton soup. Quite delicious and large enough for both of us plus lunch for me the next day. Also try the beef satay, the shrimp fried rice, general's chicken, beef and broccoli. When asked they will make entrees without MSG. As for the soups and appetizers, it's already in there but not so much as to bother my mild allergy to it. If you're highly allergic, best to stick with freshly made entrees and remember YOU HAVE TO TELL THEM TO LEAVE OUT THE MSG. Good, quick, cheap Chinese food. read more

Hot Wok is a good take out spot for Purcellville. I'm not convinced that the lunch and dinner portions are different, but after 3:00 you'll pay a few bucks more for every dish. I particularly like the large soups, Hot & Sour, Egg Drop, etc., since these are a great values for your money. I've got to agree with Jesse C's take that most everything is a little sweet and American style Chinese. I've never found the spicy or hot dishes to ever come close to being too spicy for any taste. Food is ok. Certainly not fantastic, but edible. My issue is the $25 minimum for delivery, which is not stated anywhere on their menu. I've never seen such a high delivery requirement for such cheap food! Very frustrating if your car is in the shop or something.
