I'm leaving this review with the intention of offering honest feedback that could help improve the experience, not to harm the business. Unfortunately, the studio has a noticeable odor at times, which makes it difficult to fully relax and enjoy the class. Cleanliness and air quality are especially important in a hot yoga environment, so this stood out. Additionally, while I respect the experience of the instructors, a lot of classes felt weighed down by negative energy. A yoga space should feel uplifting and supportive, but at times it came across as tense rather than encouraging. Bringing in young instructors who project more positive, fresh, and motivating energy could really enhance the overall atmosphere. I believe this place has potential, but a few changes could make a big difference in how students feel during and after class. read more

Just had another wonderful yoga practice with instructor Adriana. Really liked how she breaks down each postures. Excellent cueing and timing. Also, don't miss her Classic hot Pilates. Great for everyone as she demonstrates 3 different levels. Rafaela's hot yoga and Inferno Pilates are also my favorites. Like others have mentioned, she's really good at reading the room and provides feedbacks accordingly. Very creative Inferno classes. Cinthia's Inferno Pilates is another my favorites. She emphasizes forms which is super important to improve strength and prevent injuries. Been taking Alex's morning yoga classes for a while, and he helped me improving my practice tremendously. Ron, Ben, Julie, Celina, Melanie are also some of HYP's talented instructors. Overall, fantastic supportive community! Highly recommend! read more

I did a trial of class pass, and dropped in for a 26 bikram yoga here. This is the cleanest, largest hot yoga studio in the area that I was able to check out during the month. There's plenty of parking and space in the classroom. The instructor is audible but not aggressive. Would definitely consider coming back regularly read more

I took their 60 min Hot PIlates class and it was very challenging with the heat. At this point, I have only done two hot yoga classes also at the same temperature of 105-110 degrees but doing pilates in that level of humidity and heat is a whole other story. The studio is very spacious and I have not sweated so much in my life until this class. I could really feel the heat continue to compound for me at the last 20 mins of class. It provided a good opportunity to keep pushing through and get through every single exercise and rep the new instructor was providing. Lastly, the new instructor was extremely friendly and helpful. She ask me if I want adjustment ( of course please , Thank you Teacher) she have empathy she understands and see where you have pain and help center it to cure it ! She also teach you to be present not rush face your nemesis. Christina - she has great energy through the whole 90 minutes, strong present. I had a terrible experience doing yoga on Monday morning.I arrived 20 minutes before class to find a good spot and a good view of the mirror. But a second before class, a young couple selfishly entered and stood in front of me, completely blocking the mirror. I asked them to make a little bit room so I could see the mirror, but the teacher publicly told me "I should focus on the poses or change spot, and said they were fine"To avoid disrupting everyone else's class, I didn't respond and continued through the class. Is this teacher's behavior fair, or is she just blind? Or maybe there is something wrong with this teacher's brain. read more

I got to try Hot Yoga through classpass! The teachers are really nice and its not too hard to follow if youre a beginner just like me! (and if you cant hear them too well you can look around at the other people) The Bikram Class I went to is supposed to be 105 degrees like a hot sauna! and it will be 90minutes of 26 yoga poses. It's not so much the class for me, but it's how I feel after- you feel really detoxed and it's a great way to burn some calories! If you can't do all the poses, it's totally okay to sit there as well. You should bring a yoga mat, a big towel to place over your yoga mat so you dont slip, a giant bottle of water, and also a small face towel (youll be dripping of sweat). It's not for everyone but why not try! The parking is a bit small and you need a passcode to get into the building, just a headsup! read more

"Rafaella" Starts class late. Always in a bad mood. leaves during class to go on her phone. Spends so much time pointed out students imperfections that she forgets which posture is next. I had never done yoga or Pilates since I started going to this studio. There's Groupon discount that allows you to do an unlimited amount of classes in 2 weeks for $40ish which is a steal. I recommend taking Akiko's pilates classes. She is very passionate about what she does and pushes you to your limits. I feel like I get the best HIIT workout during her inferno pilates classes but I also enjoy taking her classic Pilates classes for a lower impact, core focused workout. Since starting at this studio, pilates has become a new hobby for me and I recommend it to all my friends. In terms of Bikram yoga classes, I prefer taking Ron's classes. He takes the time to learn each student's name and is very helpful in giving instructions to the newer people. I had only started taking Bikram classs a few months ago with the goal of increasing my flexibility. I have noticed a significant different in my body's mobility and believe everyone should try it. The classes feel lengthy at 90 mins but it also helps to build your mental strength and endurance. I go to this studio and the one in Daly City. The San Mateo location feels cleaner to me. It's located in a building where there's ample free parking in the underground area, on the street and in the back lot. All the members of this studio are very welcoming so if you feel like you want to try it out, don't hesitate! read more

Decided to try out hot yoga and Hot Yoga Plus offered a deal for 2 weeks of unlimited classes for $50 so I decided to try it. I took two classes of 26&2 BIKRAM YOGA. It was definitely a challenge as someone who is not a fan of the heat. The first instructor was a bit strict and didn't explain the movement which was fine, I just looked at the students around me. My second instructor, Yuqin Wen, was very beginner friendly. She explained each movement, why it was beneficial, and very encouraging. I would consider taking more classes with yuqin wen but I think hot yoga is not for me. read more

I've taken a few Bikram classes before and loved it, so was excited to find a place in my neighborhood. However, I found myself a little disappointed in the experience and am debating returning again. Since it was my first time, I parked on the curb and tried to go through the front, not realizing the entrance was in the back, and the studio itself is on the 2nd floor (also didn't realized there was also a dedicated parking lot from the back. The yoga room itself is pretty big - which is good because there's a lot of space to move, but it was a bit hard to hear the instructor from certain places. I took the 26x2 Bikram class with Sue - she was fine but a little hard to follow especially for beginners, and she didn't spend a lot of time correcting and guiding individuals. I had to look at my neighbors for what to do most of the time, so I wouldn't recommend if you're completely new, especially since everyone else seemed like regulars. The class also wasn't as challenging as other classes I've done - while I still sweat a lot, we spent the last 30 minutes mostly switching between Savasana and different stretches. read more

I have gone to this studio and I have gone to San Carlos yoga center. They are completely different. This studio has a wonderful large room. There seems to always be more room in the class. Also, the floors have a padded bottom, which is very nice for floor exercise. San Carlos has wonderful classes with very enthusiastic and positive teachers, Sam, yoga, lax in any class outside of yoga or classic Pilates location needs to add some hip-hop fun cardioclasses not everyone wants to do hot yoga all the time. San Mateo yoga I urge you to go to San Carlos yoga Center and take some of their classes to see what you could be offering. read more

Been to a lot of the Pilates classes and find that Cinthia is the only teacher I've had that doesn't do the exercises with the class. Her teaching style us very stern as if we are 1st grade students. She's also the only teacher that makes us wipe down our weights. Moreover, she pressures students about taking shower at the end if the night because she said she wants to go home. If you like a military style she'll fit the bill. read more

Great studio in a convenient location with excellent facilities and excellent instructors. There's ample parking behind the building and in the underground lot. Studio facilities (bathrooms, check-in area, cubicles and seating areas) are well-kept and clean. Instructors are all very friendly, welcoming, encouraging, and give personalized attention, even in larger classes. Classes are challenging yet accessible to beginners or 1st timers at yoga or Pilates, and a variety of classes are offered at different times throughout the week. The only instructor I didn't have the best experience with was Jefferson. He seemed condescending and arrogant in class, favored and gave more attention to a woman he previously knew from another studio, and basically mocked a student who needed to step out in the middle of the class. read more

~*veteran bikram yogi review*~ I've been practicing bikram yoga on and off going on 8 years and I love the Bikram Hot Yoga franchise in the bay area. I've been to most of the studios (Sea Cliff, Daly City, San Mateo) and I've never been disappointed! Their studios are always CLEAN, very affordable than compared to other studios--- (constant promos-- $79 per month autopay for unlimited yoga... YES PLZ!), always have a groupon or yelp deal to try it out, and the teachers are good/professional. This particular studio is located in a huge multi-purpose building. It's not marked so it's easy to miss on El Camino. It's right next to a boutique shop, across the street from Safeway. There's ample parking in the lot/garage and on the street- unlike their other studios. The studio is on the second floor to the left of the elevator. They have cubbies, locker room, and bathrooms are shared on the floor. They have electrolytes/mats/towels/other drinks to purchase. They have a foam-like mat floor instead of carpet which takes care of the sweat smell and easy to clean up after. Like I said, I am a veteran bikram yogi so I love my classes HOT. Here hasn't been the hottest I've been to, but I still feel like I get a great workout in. I practice in the far left corner away from the door, seems to be the warmest corner. For the newbies, do your research of what bikram yoga is and how to prepare. And if worried, you can practice by the door, the instructor usually will open the door once or twice. **update*** Had to update based on tonight. While I loved Olga's class as well as the Pilates Tuesday at 5:15, the teacher tonight was much less enthusiastic. The class felt stale and the routines were recited all at once then we were told to repeat 2-3X. If I wanted a cycle rinse repeat lack of creativity and encouragement kinda 60 minutes I'd turn the heat on and watch YouTube pilate videos. I'd use discretion when booking a class based on the teacher. Hopefully they sort out some of the consistency issues soon. I absolutely loved this place. I took the Thursday Inferno Pilates class with Olga and it was the best one I've taken through Class Pass. It was tough, but the vibe was relaxed and nurturing. I really liked her flows and felt like I got an incredible workout in 45 minutes. The studio is pleasant, clean, and nearby to downtown San Mateo. I will definitely be heading back. read more

I decided to try a hot yoga class through Class Pass today at 4:30pm. I arrived on time but ended up getting there a 2 minutes late because I couldn't not find the entrance and tried calling beforehand. When I arrived, the door was locked however someone was sitting at the front desk. I knocked and called the number (hearing the ring inside), however the individual repeatedly ignored me. I would have at least appreciated acknowledgement even if I was not able to join anymore. I will not be trying this studio. read more

Its too hot without proper ventillation. There is usually no music or it's too loud. When they open the window it's only for 1 minture and before you get any fresh air they have closed it already. Some People inside gave me such a hard time and told me where i should put my yoga mat! The instructors here dont even care that some people is doing all the poses wrong, no matter what, they won't correct you. My husband and I were late today and I understand that they might not let you in. With have that in my mind as we walked in, the super rude instructor kicked us out in a very impolite way but she let 2 other girls in, one of them got there with us and the other arrived after us! There is a reason they always have a cheap deal! I came here 5 times and everytime left a bit anxious about what happened in there. Good luck! read more

Great place whew honestly tho I've never heard of hot Pilates only hot yoga so this was a new experience. It was great tho the instructor was great and all the students had smiles. I saw one girl even taking notes. I got so sweaty I couldn't grip well for the planks . That's how wild of a workout it is. The atmosphere is great. Parking was good for me but I think I got lucky. I suggest coming 20 min early for your first time. They do give you a password for the parking garage tho. I didn't check it out yet . After being here a month I realized parking is super great, they had garage parking, front , back , and even a mini parking lot. The instructors are really good. I've had a couple times I really wasn't in the right zone for working out and they pushed me thru it just by the great way they instruct. I feel a workout goal was accomplished every time I've been here. They have showers here, and the changing areas are soo nice. They've got Thai coconut deodorant, mouthwash, blowdryers, etc... they definitely accommodate to you being fresh and clean after a sweaty hot workout. read more

This review is long overdue. I've been attending the Bikram San Mateo yoga studio since it first opened in Sep 2014. I had never taken Bikram before but had heard of hot yoga. Bikram is a tough path, but it's soooo rewarding. The first year, I attended just once a week. The next year, I bumped it up to twice a week. It has changed my life. I'm more present, in less pain, and breathe better, a whole lot better. Many of the postures are constrictive and have a tourniquet-like effect. This improves circulation. I've had a number of RSI's for decades and even consulted with a few doctors about surgery to fix them -- none of them could ensure me significant relief. They are virtually gone now which is totally cool for me. The instructors are superb. The latest instructors Martin and Heather are wonderful. She has such great energy, and Martin pushes you but with encouragement. Bikram students are a tough crowd especially when there is a mix of experiences (newbies & hardcore yogis); instructors can never make all of them happy. So, it's a tough path for the instructors too! Have some compassion for them ... I turn 50 this year and am in the best shape of my life. How does that work?! Gotta discard the "over 40 and you're done" belief. There is a guy in his mid 60's who has a superb physique; an inspiration and an exemplar for me. Bikram is the secret sauce! Advice to newbies... Bikram is not a "quick fix I'll master it in 30-days" activity, so don't set your expectation there. Also, give it a chance... The heat & humidity can be overwhelming, but your breath will save you ... Again, that takes time too... I learn something at every class, and bits of the dialog continue to penetrate. Gosh, I must have heard it hundreds of times now, but just haven't been ready to accept/follow some of the words ... A journey for sure, but soooo worth it. I love hot yoga, and bikram is bar none my favorite. This studio is particularly great in that: -It offers both bikram yoga and pilates on a regular basis, -They sell top of the line yoga equipment, -It is well heated for bikram yoga, -Sylvanna and Dash are my all time 1a 1b instructors. Their classes are truly transformative. Negatives: -The only bathroom is shared with the entire floor, -Slow responses to online inquiries, -Poor customer service, -The majority of the teachers will phone in their class, -Towels are $3 per day and there is no program for a towel membership, -Monthly memberships do not include towels unlike other similarly priced studios/gyms, -Bad policies around travel passes. Example: Yogis with a Monthly Membership can be issued a physical card to represent a "travel pass" that allows them to visit 4 different studios within the Bikram Hot Yoga network. However, if you do not have a travel pass, which is only issued after the 1st of each month, you will be charged for joining a class and then refunded when you can provide a travel pass. Meaning that even though they have your membership information, and a POS system that allows the handling and transfer of data, they choose not to utilize it. They intentionally inconvenience their members. read more

The theme of my total 30 min spent in class here was: LOL WTF. Admittedly I have never done Bikram yoga before, so maybe it just isn't for me - maybe I'm alone in feeling nauseous from the intense BO in the hot room (every review about how bad the small is is true), or alone in being weirded out by the instructor who stood on a box in nothing but tiny red shorts and talked constantly (giving the most confising instructions) but didn't actually demonstrate any of the positions himself. I DID do some research in where this yoga style came from and was already nervous coming into the studio that I would be supporting a seemingly - ridiculous - but-not-funny-anymore- due-to-rape-allegations figure and this franchise (just Google "Bikram Choudhury"). I am sad to say that almost every derisive thought I came up with during my reading turned out to be pretty accurate. It's hard to impart in a review how creepy the studio feels to an outsider, from the instructors Bikram-channeling-attire (minus the $1MM rolex), to the clause in the waiver saying "by signing below you promise to not leave the room for the whole 90 min class," to the picture on the wall of Bikram sitting on a tiger skin. I was hoping i woukd get lucky and this would be one of the hot yoga studios that broke away from what is often called "Bikram's cult" but within minutes your stomach starts to sink as you quickly realize it's quite the opposite. If you're totally into yoga and don't mind the whole Bikram juju thing, you'll probably like this place. For anyone new to yoga, sensitive to smell, or strongly feminist - I suggest you try Patty's class at Butterfly Yoga studio on the other side of the 101. read more

The bathrooms were nice, but that's the only good thing I can say about my experience this morning. If I haven't taken yoga before, and is this was my first class... I can definitely say that I would not want to try yoga again. The instructor did not do any modifications, I felt uncomfortable when vajrasana was instructed as "sit on your knees, like how the Japanese people do it". There were no music playing, so it was repeated a lot more than what I was comfortable hearing. I felt like I was at a soft spoken auction, it was constantly just her voice. I felt more anxious after class than when I started. Nothing about this class was relaxing. Overall as a new student, I will ABSOLUTELY will not be coming back to this studio. This place gets a 1 star. Arrived on time but door was locked. I called the studio but no answer. As a result was five minutes late and wasn't allowed in the studio. There are way too many studios in San Mateo to accept this kind of behavior go somewhere else. Edited: You know what is respectful? It's never a good sign when you run into a student of the previous class as they're leaving the studio in extreme discomfort while letting you know you're better off not going. Yikes. Pros: 1. Ample parking Cons: 1. The studio was extremely difficult to find. There are literately no signs outside of the building or in the lobby to direct you to the studio within the building. Bad user experience before you even walk in since you basically have to guess where to go. The building is under renovation (which it desperately needs) but they could afford to at least put a sign outside indicating the location of the studio itself. 2. The ventilation in the studio lobby is so bad it feels like a high school boy's locker room. It's humid and smells less than desirable. Also not a great experience when you haven't even started the class yet. At this point I was almost tempted to turn back and leave. Maybe that woman earlier really was on to something. 3. The woman's "locker" room does not have any actual lockers. There is literately no where to keep your stuff locked up while you're in class. It's hard to sit through a yoga class knowing anyone can walk into the building, into the locker room, and take my purse and belongings, especially when there are so many people coming in and out of the studio and locker rooms. 4. The class felt like a high intensity interval workout. When you're doing yoga in a sauna, the last thing you need is a drill sergeant as an instructor having you switch through every pose at rapid speeds. It was so painfully exhausting that half the class either gave up and laid down or left the studio entirely. There were points where I almost did too. Had this been my first hot yoga experience, I'd never try hot yoga again. I am curious to try more studios now but I definitely have no desire to return to this one. read more

I am really enjoying this studio! I was training for a half marathon and this was the perfect workout to do on the days that I wasn't running. The teachers are friendly and helpful. I also love the fact that they offer Bikram as well as hot Pilates. The studio is clean with a nice shower and changing room area. I haven't had an issue with parking as I've always found parking on the street. It's nice that they offer 8 pm classes, I'm able to always fit a class in my schedule. read more

Hello to everyone so this is gonna be a bit long so I've been doing yoga since 2015 off and on . I put my account in hold for personal reasons and the pandemic. But mostly been attending I started off attending 4 to 5 times a week because it was really helping me mentally since. I was going thru a tuff time in my life . the pandemic started and I put my acct on pause because I was not attending class because of mask. the whole point here is that I activated my acc once again and they didn't want to honor my price of what I was paying and I really find it unfair because I have many many friends that also attend yoga that started with me and they are still being honored that same price they have also put there accounts on pause like myself and still being honored that old price of 79$ monthly I spoke to the accountant and ive been there for 7 years and asked them if they couldn't honor 79 $ to honor 99$ 109$ or even 119$ those are prices that have been there since I started to me this sounds like a unfair situation .cause how do they know what to charge who or what .how do they choose does it go on color or race . I'm Hispanic . I'm sorry I can't be other race to please them . its really sad that things like this are still going on you would think that with all these things that are going on in the world things like this would not be such a big issue . I did my homework and it seems to me that I found out Hispanic ppl are paying higher amount than everyone else this sounds like discrimination to me it's really sad I think everyone here should be treated equal This is my whole point !!!!!!!!!!! Guys, I almost died here. So first let me start out with my experience with Bikram and hot yoga. For those that don't know the difference, Bikram is made up of 26 postures and the room is usually around 105-108, and traditionally it's 90 minutes, unless you find studios that modify, San Mateo's studio is traditional. Hot yoga can be 90 degrees with many different poses and usually they're a regular hour class. That being said, I have done Bikram enough that I knew what I was signing up for. I use to go pretty frequently, but admittedly it had been awhile. The studio here is nice. It's a little strange because it is in a business/corporate type of building, and you have to go up to the 2nd floor. They do have a sign to ask that students cover up their yoga gear while in the building because of this. The studio has showers, but their restrooms are shared with the other tenants down the hall. I enjoyed the instructor and thought she did a good job leading the class and checking in on the new people. However, it was hot, like really hot, and as someone else mentioned it was also stemmed with what seemed like not the best ventilation. The class definitely took a toll on my body, however, I felt really good afterwards, the way I always do after a Bikram class, so no complaints, but I did spend extra time in savasana this class. read more

However, as the owner indicated in her response on my earlier review, they will do a better job of pumping fresh air before, during and after sessions but it hasn't happened yet. Breathing oxygen during the practice is critical. As it is we are breathing carbon dioxide which results in tired and dizzy feelings. How about opening the windows meanwhile? Door? I would expect yoga to be instructor-run in some way, but this class was not. The course began with the receptionist sitting down in front of class on a box and calling out the moves. Although she did so with enthusiasm and energy, the experience was no different than playing an audio tape. The instructor provided no actual guidance and because the instructor just sat on the bench, it wasn't clear that the instructor could even advise or correct new yogis. I left after 30 minutes. I'm so glad there's finally a Bikram yoga studio in San Mateo (I had to drive to either Burlingame or San Carlos for years)...too bad I had already moved away. I come here whenever I'm back home and it's the studio my mom comes to religiously. Bikram is such a refreshing workout and I recommend it to anyone looking for a detoxifying experience. Practice takes perfect, so you have to really commit to your practice to see results over time. While I've done Bikram for 5+ years, it can be a little boring after a while (silent, 90 minutes, the same 26 postures) so if you're looking for something a little more upbeat, I'd recommend CorePower Yoga (they just opened one in downtown San Mateo--you have to pay for parking though). This studio has a weird-ish location inside a semi-corporate office, so you're asked to cover up on your way in/out of the studio. The bathrooms are shared with the other offices in the hallway, which is kind of annoying since it would be much easier if they had bathroom stalls in the locker rooms. They do have a water filtration station which is nice to refill your h20 bottle (even though Bay Area tap water already tastes fantastic). read more
