I love small businesses like Hotel 340 and wish I could rate it higher, but just can't as I felt unsafe the entire time I stayed here. When I arrived at 9:30, the front door was locked, so I (27 y/o female) called the lobby while my friend (same demographic) waited in the car. Lobby staff (of one) was very friendly. I was told to park in the garage down the street (which was deserted except for a few loiterers). I parked, then walked down the dark street with my friend and our luggage where we were followed by a man on a bicycle who was harassing us... We had to ask a cabbie for help! There was literally no one else around! At this point, I felt so nervous about my car in the public garage. I tried to let it go, but in the middle of the night was awoken by screaming only to look out the window to the street where a bunch of kids were beating each other up! Again- no one around! Just not a restful night at all and of course this is mostly the fault of St. Paul police, but for what I paid for this room, I should at least be somewhere I can feel safe and know that my car is in a safe place too. Sad to say I will never return to Hotel 340. I should list the pros though: -nice small room -decent bed -beautiful, clean bathroom -nice staff read more

We were in one of their king suites. Not your typical suite layout. This appears to be kludged out of a space that wasn't originally intended to be a hotel. I have no idea where those pictures came from on their website. Our room was nothing like that. When you enter the room, you have a space with the kitchenette and several drawers and cupboards for storing your folded items. No seating area. And an armoire. To the right of that is what used to be a closet that they transformed into a washroom (no shower). If you go to the left after you enter the room you'll go into the sleeping area which also includes a small work desk and an upholstered chair. Going past the sleeping area you will find the shower, which they also converted out of a closet. This is critical because the bath towels are in the washroom on the opposite side of the suite. You need to plan ahead if want to use a towel after your shower. The loose cables hanging beneath the flat screen TV on the wall look sloppy. The cheap mini-blinds remind me of my first apartment. We could hear the light rail from our room. That wasn't really a problem for us but some might be sensitive to it. There was a creepy creaking sound that was probably from the room above us. Probably just door hinges that needed oil. The armoire is so short that you couldn't even hang a shirt without it bending. Wi-Fi was around 7 or 8 Mbps download. I've seen a lot worse in hotels. Finding the hotel entrance will be your first challenge if you park in the recommended lot. The person at the front desk was pleasant. We asked about the bar. She said she'd take us there as she was also the bartender. The bar is small. No one else was there. We took advantage of the free continental breakfast the next morning. Pretty typical fare (including the obligatory waffle maker.) They only had de-caf. When a worker finally came around, it was pointed out that the regular coffee was empty. She was going to get some more but we didn't see her again before we left. My simple reaction to this quirky hotel is "over-priced. read more

This hotel is beyond disappointing. They threw a nice bed and some robes in an old, junky room and that's it. The website promises that most rooms have city views; ours looks into an air shaft. When I asked for another room the desk clerk told me that the room we are in has the nicest bathroom in the hotel. We looked at the other room he offered and he is right, the bath was worse and had the same view. So we stayed in the first room. It has an ironing board leaning against the wall, chipped paint, awkward layout and due to the air shaft view, is very dark. The lamps are inadequate so we have to use the glaring overheads. We do have two baths: one with a handicap pull down bench, but it is not designed for a wheelchair. It does have a newer jacuzzi tub but everything else is 1970s vintage or earlier, and not in a good way. The half bath is gigantic but reminds me of a hospital shower room. Tile in both baths as high as my head. Very institutional. The art work is a mish mash of stuff you might buy at Marshall's for your bathroom, but there is no artwork or decor of any kind in the bathrooms. They just threw a bunch of things on the wall. I thought I was booking a historic, fun boutique hotel for a romantic weekend. I got something far from that. I stay in lots of hotels for my work and am not a complainer. I have never asked to switch rooms before in my life, so that gives you an idea how disappointed I am. read more

A beautiful hotel in a historic building. Connected to the skywalk system and a parking lot. The Capital City Parking ramp is an extra cost but it is discounted for Hotel 340 guests. We definitely will stay here again and hopefully have more time to explore the Hotel and St Paul Fitness Center. This is a very unique hotel. When we arrived the girl at the front desk was very friendly. She greeted me & then handed me a key. An ACTUAL key! The lobby of this hotel is spectacular. Absolutely beautiful & the music playing made you feel like you were back in time to the 40's. The room was good sized & the bed was comfortable. They have rooms with 2 beds & 2 bathrooms. That's great when you are traveling with teenage girls. Just a couple of things that housekeeping missed. There was a water bottle under the bed & another wedged between the wall & bed. There was an icky washcloth hanging on the shower curtain rod. It was hard & crusty like someone hung it there & it had been there for a few days. The best part about this hotel is that it is connected to the skywalk. If you are going to an event at the excel center you don't even have to go outside if you don't want to. We stayed in January so that was a huge plus. The free breakfast was typical for hotel but still good. We will stay here again & if not for the housekeeping issues I would have given a 5. read more

I am a Native Minnesotan and I NEVER knew about this Hidden Secret! I found them online with the best price downtown St. Paul. I did some research and then reserved my room. They were fabulous! Graham was there to great me when I arrived late and was there bright eyed and bushy tailed the next morning when I was heading out. They serve a GREAT complimentary continental breakfast! The rooms were so nice. I loved everything about them, it had a cozy feel you felt the history of the building, however the rooms were modernized. If that makes sense. I enjoyed relaxing in the comfy bed watching the big flat screen on the wall. Then the bathroom, I really loved the bathroom it was so updated. I just can't believe that I never ever knew this was there! When I travel back to MN, I will definitely be staying back at Hotel 340! YOU GUYS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! We really wanted to like this place, but left disappointed. There was no one at the front desk when we arrived. We called the suggested number to find the bartender was working double duty this night. The lobby has a funky soul, and also a funky smell. The rooms are ALMOST top shelf. Little touches like worn off stain on the nightstand and uneven plaster give a cheap vibe. The TVs are nice, unless you want to rent a movie. No dice there. And the bar was out of 1/3 of the things on the menu. The bartender/front desk guy tried really hard to make our stay perfect, but the little things that separate good from great make this place not worth the cost. read more

I'm kind of a romantic, so I thought this large "old skool" botique hotel was definitely cool as far as the architecture, etc. was concerned. The finishings were very nice, though the plaster walls in the rooms seem to be a bit more beat up than I would've expected. When we checked in at 2:50pm we were greeted warmly by the front desk and given our keys. We went into the room to find it was not yet cleaned, and the cleaning staff was still a ways down the haul. We went to the front desk and told them the issue and politely asked if there was a different room that was ready. The guy at the front desk then says, "Well technically check in isn't until 3pm." At this time it's now 2:55pm. To us it wasn't really that big of a deal, but it was kind of ridiculous that they would try to put you in a room that wasn't clean and then admonish you because you checked in 5-10 minutes early. We were switched to another room that was clean and we were perfectly happy with. When it came time for checkout, we went down to the front desk to drop off our keys and be on our way, but unfortunately, nobody was at the front desk. Instead there was a sign directing us to call a number. That number was busy 10x. We decided to walk and put our bags in the truck and then come back to try to check out. When we returned 15 minutes later, there was still nobody at the front desk and the alternate number was still busy. We decided to just leave the keys on the desk with a post it of our name and phone if they had any questions. None of this was really that big of a deal, but this is the type of customer service one might expect from a Super 8, not a higher end hotel. read more

I have stayed in many hotels but this was by far the worst,I booked the deluxe king suite and it was smaller than any other hotel room i have ever stayed in,the pictures are very misleading, I expected a huge room and for over $200 I got a normal room at Holiday Inn with the upgrade of hardwood floors.the bathrooms are so small you can't even fit two people in them and one person trying to get ready in the bathroom even is extremely cramped and cleanliness was a huge issue..I have never in my life been so disappointed in a establishment....do yourself a favor and NEVER STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!!!!! We stayed her in a efficiency room recently. The hotel itself is charming. It felt like we stepped back in time when we walked into the lobby with the player piano going. The room itself felt like we were staying in a nice spare bedroom. It was small but it was just what we needed. Two things that were not that great were the window was permanently up and our A/C stopped working. I would have given a 3 star, but we had a bad experience with the service. When we first showed up, we waited 10 minutes before someone even helped us. Then the next day we called the lobby to have the person at the front desk call a cab for a very specific time so we could get to a wedding. We went down, waited about 10 minutes, and then asked the guy at the counter if he had called a cab. He told us that he forgot because he got too busy?! This was unacceptable, and we were livid over the entire situation. So he called a cab, we waited another 10 minutes, missing the wedding. We walked to a bar, got a drink, and then went to the reception. We called the manager about a week later, left a message, and never heard anything back. This place could have potential, especially at the prices point, but really needs some better people working the desk. read more

I had very mixed feelings about Hotel 340. We were attending a wedding in Saint Paul at their sister property, the University Club. We knew we wanted to stay downtown Saint Paul and as we were looking at prices, we found 340 to be comparable to other hotels in the area. We booked a standard room for Thursday through Sunday. When we checked in, the hotel staff was very friendly and gave us the key to the room. When we went in we couldn't believe how small it was. I have never seen a room this small at a hotel. I believe the bed was a full size and it was pushed up against the wall. The tv took up a lot of space and the whole thing seemed small and cramped. Especially for two full grown adults. I don't have extremely high expectations for hotels as I usually stay at chains and just want a comfy bed that's big enough for both of us, a clean bathroom and a tv with a few channels. After surveying this room, we went back down to the lobby and told the guy at the front desk that the room was incredibly small for 2 people spending more than one night. He didn't seem surprised by our concern and said there was a room with a queen size available. We got those keys and went up to check it out. It was much better, not so claustrophobic. However, housekeeping had not made the bed or anything yet, understandable. So we went back to the lobby, told them that looked much better, but it wasn't ready. They said they would take care of it and we went along our way. We got back later around 9pm and went up to the room with our things. When we opened the door to the room, it was still in disarray. We trudged back down to the lobby to tell them. They have us keys to yet another queen sized room. Well third time was the charm. The room was still small but significantly more comfortable than the first room. Everything was clean and nice. The tv was a little large for the room and you kind of had to squeeze around it to get to the far side of the bed. Fortunately I'm small. It was mounted on the wall with an arm that swung out. It was a little heavy for the arm it think because it had a constant tilt. The bed was nice. Under the tv was a keurig machine with a few k cups and some bottles water. Nice touch. The bathroom had shampoo, conditioner, lotion and shower gel. I was relieved because I had forgotten my conditioner in Arizona. We drank our coffee and bottled water the following morning and I used the conditioner in the shower. We left for the day. Housekeeping never came. Not that day or for the rest of the weekend. We were going to go get more water and coffee at the front desk but kept forgetting. I mean. I don't expect or even want the towels and bedding washed daily but it's nice when they at least replenish the amenities. O well. The other thing that bugged me a little was that there was no soap in the bathrooms. I for one like washing my hands after using the restroom and was horrified when I realized there was no soap. Strange. And not sanitary. There were redeeming qualities at 340 though. It was absolutely beautiful. The lobby is grand, the rooms seemed quaint, the staff was wonderful, the lobby bar is nice, it's quiet. There were just a handful of things that seemed weird. I'm sure a lot of people would be more bothered and upset about this. We weren't upset at all. I think I just went in with high expectations and were slightly disappointed. I gave them three stars with their front desk staff being their redeeming quality. read more

I checked in while the late night staff was on duty and have never had friendlier service at near midnight. We were granted an upgrade to a gorgeous room for no charge. The place is full of charm and character. I don't even want to ruin my image of the trip by thinking of such sordid things as money, but the price was unreal considering the quality of the room. We stayed at the 340 a year ago for Valentine's Day. We really enjoyed it! The front lobby was breath taking. The hotel is very European in style, old world look with really modern updated rooms. The beds are extremely comfortable and the view is great on any side of the hotel. We thought the customer service was amazing, although you may have to wait a bit for service because they are a smaller staffed hotel. But I would definitely go again!!! read more

Could be a lovely place if cleaned and furnished well. It's not. The wedding reception we attended while staying here was lovely, but I would not book a room here again. Here's why - 1. Questionable cleanliness - I stepped on a razor guard not belonging to either of us while showering.(Yuk!) Shower area very poorly lit. 2. Tiny, tiny room with poor layout - Easier to roll across the bed to get to far side of room than to avoid the extension cord and tight clearance between bed, wall, and desk. Tangle of cords to trip over once you do get there (and you gotta go there, that's where the coffee is). - TV, satellite box, coffee maker, and radio cord all plugged into one extension cord, which was plugged into another extension cord that was plugged in behind a large armoire on the entry side of the room. These cords are just laying on the floor between you and your coffee.. Stingy with towels, in-room coffee. No water glasses supplied at all. read more

I was excited to stay at this hotel because it seemed so charming and old fashion. Our room was beautiful but upon closer inspection had much room for improvement. Our view was of the roof and the side of another building, not to mention pigeon poo!!! We had our blinds shut for our entire stay because there was literally nothing to see. We were in St. Paul for a concert and when we came back from the show, the door to the hotel was locked! It took about two minutes for someone to open the door for us which concerned us because it made us feel unsafe on the street since it was about midnight. The toilet is in a closer beside the bed and it completely not sound proof... Do not stay at this hotel unless you are completely comfortable with your travel companion LOL. The shower was in a closet close to the door. It was so strange that they were in separate rooms. The shower was so confusing to operate. We turned it on and it began spraying all over the door and floor. In the end, we decided to just take a "sink shower." Hotel staff was friendly and there was free Wi-Fi so that is always a bonus! read more

We stayed here on an early honeymoon and we were treated like royality! The staff was so kind and went out of the way to suprise us with champagine and the setting was perfect! The Lobby has a huge awsome fireplace with many comfortable places to sit and snuggle. There is music playing everywhere soft and happy sounds to follow your steps. The room we stayed in was very fun it was a suite with a lovley sitting area with fridge, microwave, expresso, soft couches and television and a great view of the Mississippi. The bedroom was large and clean and welcoming with a very great bed and lots of space to walk and dance. We were allowed to take a self guided tour of the building and what history and beauty to be seen there. If I were getting married again I would want to have my cermony and reception here. I would recomend this place very highly to history fans and archetural fans and pelple who are tired of staying in cookie cutter places. We will be back again! read more

My son was married at the Hotel 340 on New Years Eve 2015. Most of the wedding party and many of the guests stayed at the hotel. Two of my rooms were charged to the bride's credit card instead of mine, which was given to them upon check in. Nice to know your credit card is so protected by the staff. Since our last name is not the same I wonder how they managed that. Some of the guests, that booked within the wedding block, were seriously overcharged. The bar staff in the wedding area was charging the guests for drinks that were supplied by the bride and groom and were to be given out free. They were not even told they had an option with the wine. Even the groom's grandma was charged for her glass. Really people? When asked about it, they were rude. Some of their gifts disappeared along with the snowflake ornaments that I took off my christmas tree to help decorate the tables. Thanks 340 Staff! Someone also tried to walk off with the bride and groom's toast glasses. Luckily someone caught that one and retrieved them. Oh and here is a kicker - the wait staff didn't even serve wedding cake to our table. Yes, the groom's parents and grandparents ...did not get any cake! read more
