    Hair on the sheets

I booked a stay at the Blackhawk for a couple of days in July 2025. My in-laws had their anniversary party there years ago, and I thought it would be nice to reminisce as I was bringing my kids to visit their dad's, and my late husband's, gravesite. When entering, the hotel looks very elegant. However, the room itself smelled like mildew, the bathroom floor was sticky with urine stains, the shower was grimy and falling apart, and the bedsheets had hair and stains on them. My husband and I went to complain, and the desk clerk, who didn't even stand up, kept putting his finger up to us as we were "interrupting" his walkie talkie conversation. The manager came over, and we told her about the room. I also told her that it was not a room I could stay in. Now, here is what she said, "I completely emphasize with you. You will not be charged, and I hope you find somewhere you will be comfortable." Ummmm, what?!? I told her we were there so my middle and high school aged kids could visit their dad's grave. She then suggested other hotels. She didn't offer any other rooms, she didn't offer a free stay, she kicked us out, basically! I was flabbergasted. I was appalled. This was in the evening, where were we supposed to go after driving several hours?!? This didn't go over well with me, as you could imagine. Then, as we were packing up the room, she had sent security to make sure we were leaving!! I have been to many, many hotels, and even the "cheap" ones didn't treat me like this. Just, awful.

The biggest perk of this hotel is the nice architecture. But from there, it goes a bit down hill. Despite arriving at ~9:30, we had to wait multiple minutes for someone to help us check in. When she did arrive at the desk, she was fairly cold to us. Not the end of the world, but especially at an autograph collection hotel I would expect perhaps a warmer welcome. When we got to our room, we found that the room had not been sufficiently cleaned. For example, the toilet seat still had dried up urine from the prior visitor in the seat, and the shower handle had some kind of film over it. Though these would be upsetting anytime, it was particularly frustrating during a global pandemic when you expect things to be thoroughly cleaned. Furthermore, of the 4 pillows that were on our bed, they were different sizes, which made it a bit awkward to sleep. Fine for a one night stay where we got in late and left early, but I would not have wanted to spend more time in this hotel.

Lighting is great, room temperature controls work quickly, and you can't hear anything in the hallway (but if you have a bunch of 2-to 6-year-olds in the room above you, you'll know). Wireless internet connectivity is very quick for being free, so no need to pay for an upgrade. I went for a morning walk around the property before dawn (staying on sidewalks) and everything was safe (mostly well lit). The gym is large, equipment new and clean, towels are provided, and water dispenser works. No one was using the pool but it's there! Finally, I ordered food from the Bistro restaurant in the lobby. It's usually a bad choice, but not here. They put a lot of effort into the drinks AND food. I got the espresso martini (doesn't need the simple syrup, IMHO) and it was the best I've had in a while (people keep adding weird things to these drinks elsewhere or it ends up being coffee milk-- iykyk). The Turkey Avocado BLT (sans bacon for me) and side arugula salad (fresh baby arugula, cucumbers and tomatoes!!) was large and a great value for 12.50. They don't joke about the Texas toast and they aren't skimping with the avocado. The salad was large enough that I got it "to go" and made it my lunch the next day. The grilled chicken sandwich was also delicious and had fresh ingredients. Honestly, I don't have criticism to provide. Best business trip hotel I've stayed in while traveling in the Midwest.

We selected the Best Western Plus Steeplegate Inn in Davenport after a thorough search for hotels with three stars or above and the best rates. This hotel stood out for its competitive rates and quality. Despite ongoing renovations, the hotel offered excellent value for money, with rates significantly lower than other comparable hotels. While I have given the Best Western Plus Steeplegate Inn a five-star rating, it's important to note that this is not a reflection of it being a five-star hotel. I would categorize it as a three-star hotel, but I am giving it a five-star review based on our positive experience. Despite some areas that could be improved, our overall satisfaction was high, considering the room cost us only $263 for a three-night stay, which was an excellent value for the amenities and service provided. Here are some of the favorable aspects that contributed to our five-star rating. Our room had a King-sized bed that was not just comfortable but also came with tons of pillows for a restful sleep. We had a microwave and a mini-fridge with a tiny freezer for our convenience and a super comfortable stuffed leather chair with an oversized rolling ottoman for relaxation. The mini-Keurig/coffee station was a nice touch, and the vast and lovely body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion dispensers in the shower added to the comfort. The sizeable, beautiful corner closet, thick walls, and a nice desk with handy plugs were all well-thought-out amenities. The hotel lobby was clean like our room was, and certainly impressive looking, with an ATM, mini-store to purchase any needed necessities such as charging cords, a full-sized coffee station with disposable cups, and plenty of lush oversized furniture. They had a nice full fitness room with weights, treadmills, exercise bikes, and more, which we appreciated but didn't get to use during our trip. There was also a fully enclosed courtyard in the middle of the hotel, which was quite lovely. The indoor atrium was enormous, with extremely high ceilings and superb acoustics. The swimming pool, which was gated with a cute little white picket fence with a latching gate, was small and kidney-shaped, with a range of 3 ft to 5 ft deep water, which was comfortably warm. There was a jacuzzi, but unfortunately, it was boarded over during our visit and unusable. There was also a minimal gaming area with several arcade games. A highlight of this hotel is the absolutely fabulous bar which is attached to it called 1 Hundred West that has live music, fantastic food, occasional live music, and out-of-this-world drinks (I mean, really, the drinks were high class. The hotel may have been about a three-star hotel, but 1 Hundred West is a five-star bar). The best part was the bartenders, including Matt, who has a great sense of humor and lovely mannerisms and makes a mean Manhatten, and Anthony, who was an absolute delight to speak to and a pleasure to be around. Anthony is truly dedicated to his craft as a bartender and is a very kind-hearted gentleman who knocked our socks off when he made our drinks (be sure to try his grasshopper!). The bar is a great place to visit whether or not you drink, and it is immaculately clean and has a modern, sleek look. We had an absolute delight at the bar and can't recommend it highly enough if you're in the Q.C. area. The person who checked us into the hotel was charming and attentive. We never used room service, but it was available, as were wake-up calls, free Wi-Fi, hardwired internet, and complimentary amenities available by request at the front desk, such as toothbrushes, shaving cream, razors, sewing kits, combs, and other essentials. The hotel also boasts a coin laundry on the bottom floor, but we did not visit that during our trip. There were, however, a few minor downsides to the hotel. Although they were in the middle of renovation and had that posted, there were some parts, such as ceiling panels in the hallways, that fell through and needed to be repaired, which detracted from the overall pleasantness of our stay. There was a shower but no tub, and the lip of the shower at the bottom was only about an inch tall, so no matter how hard you tried to be careful, water splashed out all over the bathroom floor, so improvements could be made there. Also, I noticed there were no safety handles in or around the shower or bathroom, and as I have severe back issues, I nearly slipped several times, so if I had any feedback for the rooms, it would be those in the bathroom. Other than those issues, our room was very nice, extremely roomy, and came with many amenities and lovely decorations. It had a very classic and clean, open feel. We believe that addressing these issues could further enhance the guest experience.

I asked if he was going to leave it open another hour so I could have my adult swim. No. Pool closes at 10. There's really no place I could have gotten them but here. I drove from Chicago, so didn't pick them up flying. When I followed up with the hotel, they assured me there were no bugs in my room, but they had it treated anyway. (Why treat a room that's not infested?) I asked for a copy of the exterminator's report and never received it. Next I contacted Hilton Corporate, and they emailed me that Hilton takes no responsibility for bed bugs in their hotels... it's up to each hotel to settle problems. So I'm out a set of luggage and a week of intense itching, a doctor's visit and meds... plus dry cleaning clothes that can't be washed in hot water. I've stayed in this hotel four times while visiting family, and it's definitely gone downhill. Too bad, because they have a great workout area, the rooms are spacious and the bed is comfortable... but my room was never cleaned during this stay, not even fresh towels.
