Lobby, can sit for their morning continental breakfast

Spoiler alert: Thin Walls. You will hear EVERYTHING.. a sneeze, fart and a text alert from your neighbors. We came here for a baby moon and was truly excited for our quick weekend in Carmel. We had a long day getting in but relaxed on the beach for a few hours and had a nice dinner. We were excited to end the night relaxing at the hotel since this would be our last night just the two of us. Checking in was fine. Anne helped us and explained all the parking regulations- and in Carmel it's a lot. The other issue is the parking spaces are first come first serve so you're more than likely going to have to do street parking. The biggest issue we had was how thin the walls were. The room above us was loud and partying until about 1am. We had to call the lobby to ask them to talk to the above room. Once called, half the party left but the guests who were there blasted the TV and you can literally hear word for word the shows and their own conversation. It wasn't until 2am they tuckered themselves out. Being pregnant and tired is one thing but paying over $500 for a room and this is what we are dealing with on our last trip together made me extremely mad and I felt a bit jipped of my experience. If you want to try it for yourself- I recommend trying to get the 2nd level rooms. Unfortunately I did not because I was having a hard time with steps. Definitely won't be coming back and for that price ticket. Should have went with my gut and went to Hyatt.

We stayed here twice already and we are going to book here again on our visit next time. Service and location are excellent. They serve good breakfast and snacks. The customer service was exceptionally great. I highly recommend this place! At first, we stayed at the room up from the lobby and second near the patio outside.

Cute boutique hotel in Carmel. All of the hotels in Carmel are small boutique lodge types but some are older and not updated. Hotel Carmel fits the boutique vibe but is nice, renovated, and welcoming. Room was a good size and clean. Cute little hot tub and courtyard with fireplace and seating. The lobby had fresh chocolate chip cookies every night, a generous continental breakfast in the morning, and different complimentary cocktails throughout the day. Overall very pleasant experience and would stay here again.

Disappointing start to a mother daughter getaway. We pulled into the hotel/motel an hour early and thank goodness was we did. The parking spots get snapped up fast. When our room was finally ready, I was disappointed to discover that although we booked two months earlier, we were stuck in a dank back corner of the courtyard in two musty rooms. Even more disappointing was that a courtyard room was the hotel reservationist's recommendation so that we wouldn't overlook the parking lot. But guess what? The parking lot rooms have views of the ocean. So lame. We haven't been here very long but so far the desk staff is curt, the bathrooms are crappy and the room is depressing. There are far more fun quirky places to stay in Carmel. The location is good but the rest stinks. Update Day 2 After doggedly pursuing a change of rooms we were promised two on the second floor the following day. Same layout but sunny and not soul sucking. We can even see the pacific over the treetops. The hotel staff was cheerful and helpful, offering to help schlepp the luggage up the flight of stairs. I have a few other positives to report on at Hotel Carmel: 1. Their continental breakfast is a true, European style continental with amazing croissants, fresh fruit, yogurt and granola and hard boiled eggs. They even supply champagne if you'd like to start the day with a mimosa. 2. Their in-room coffee makers are lavazza, superior even to Nespresso for a morning espresso or americano. 3. Management reached out to me to apologize for our experience and sincerely listened to the issues we had. I did notice that my new room had freshly cleaned carpet which was a big step up from whatever bio-hazard lurked in the last room. I increased my stars to three. Just don't request a downstairs courtyard room unless they guarantee a sunny one.

Hotel Carmel is literally the first hotel that I have stayed in since COVID happened. I haven't ventured out into many places but over the weekend we decided to take a chance and try something new. This little small hotel is beautiful in every way. We got here pretty late and the check-in counter was closed. It said to call a number and immediately someone came to the door. A very nice man had let us check-in and told us about the area and also how COVID measures have changed how they did their breakfast meal. Overall I'm glad we picked this pretty fun hotel. The outside and inside are quite pretty and super relaxing. When we woke up we could see the ocean from our second-floor hotel room. It was quiet and nice but what was pretty fun is they have a little patio area with a fireplace. Everything is well decorated and the staff was super chill and really sweet. We had a lot of fun and totally would stay here again!! Thank you for making my first time to the outside world feel safe and homey in a way! Loved it!!

Update [7/20/21]:: Hotel management has responded to some of my concerns via email and indicated room improvements are being made. I'm updating my review from 1-star to 3 for their willingness to make things better. Major misrepresentation of room setup. I booked a 3-night stay for the Suite ('The Attic'). My negative experience is not due to rude staff or lack of professionalism, but rather an expectation of privacy the hotel was unable to provide. The nature of my visit was for my honeymoon, so privacy was clearly my first priority. The Attic is structured more like a cheap upper unit buildout within a large garage space. The front desk lobby is directly below the suite and is occupied 24 hours per day. As guests check in, their voices and conversations are easily heard from within the suite -- there is zero sound barrier. The bathroom has a window and no exhaust fan, leaving us with a conundrum if we want to enjoy the shower -- humidify the entire unit but retain our privacy, or leave the window open and broadcast how great it is to be newly married and on vacation. Within the suite was an unlocked utility closet with open access to the attic crawl space, which was full of random storage items. It immediately evoked a sense of amateur hospitality and clearly would be a major safety concern had I checked in with children. This hotel suffers from incurable defects that severely negate its value for guests. Would not recommend.

I went here for my engagement weekend - it was super magical and the hotel was perfect. But that Sangria and those house made cookies were to die for!

The experience was also disturbed by how unwilling, and unhelpful the receptionist / front desk woman was when we attempted to check in (she was an older Hispanic, heavy set woman). We explained that we were also dining at their restaurant, Aubergine (on premises) and we were hoping to be let into our room only one hour before check-in (3pm vs. 4pm), so that we could prepare ourselves properly for our 2-Michelin Star meal there at 5pm. Mind you, we also requested this when our reservation was made directly through their website (2 months in advance) + we were some of the only dinner guests at their restaurant that were spending the night. This receptionist was unbelievably rude I had to remind her that I was the guest! Later, they were able to get us in. I didn't understand why she could not be professional given their claim to service and luxury, sadly we experienced neither from her. Literally everyone else, which happened to be male, was extremely kind, attentive and helpful! ***For the price per night, the quality versus luxury ratio was not there for us.*** And with the rude, unprofessional behavior that almost guarantees no return. Hopefully they can get better staff and upgrades underway. It would be a shame to keep "letting it go" as it seems that they are doing now.

The historic building is impressive, as is the interior lobby, living room, restaurant/bar and 1st floor courtyard. Unfortunately, the guest rooms --or more specifically, Room 207 leaves a lot to be desired. As others have noted, the rooms are indeed small and in need of updating. Bed comfort is subjective. I've stayed at plenty of hotels and generally never had trouble falling asleep, but I did find both the bed and pillows to be overly firm and uncomfortable. The bigger disappointment for me was the noise. 207 is the closest room to the 2nd floor staircase landing, and there's a hallway bench right outside the room door. On multiple occasions, I had to listen to someone sitting on the bench right outside my door talking loudly on their phone before heading downstairs. The utility closet next to Room 207 also resulted in unwanted noise. And there was persistent noise coming from the alleyway directly below my room windows --loud talking, laughing, singing and coughing late into the night and early morning. The hotel staff I interacted with were all friendly and helpful and the building is ideally located in the heart of downtown Carmel. I expected more though for what worked out to be a $600 a night stay.

He has 0 customer service skills and should not be customer facing. He had minimal eye contact, cold demeanor as if we were bothering him, mumbling, and just overall unpleasant. He had the demeanor of a bro cashier at a GNC. There was a guy next to him which I assume was IT or something since he was messing with something at the front. There was a woman who brought us a welcome glass of champagne, and Angel - who gave us a brief tour and brought our luggage to the room. Angel and the woman were nice. Champagne was good, however I wish they offered non alcoholic options like a juice or sparking cider. Throughout our stay, we encountered many staff on the property in passing - not a single smile from any of them. Even the housekeeping staff at a BestWestern are nicer than the staff here. - Room: gorgeous but small. Booking a room for 2 does not just mean having a big enough bed, but actually room for 2 humans to move around. There is not enough room to lay your luggage out anywhere, and the bathroom was narrow. I would've liked to have a towel bar by the sink instead of having a silly rock be what holds the towel up. The room is aesthetically stunning and the bed was very comfortable. I loved the ambient lighting options and motion activated under-lighting. I liked that we had a balcony. I enjoyed the soaps / lotions, as well all the nespresso in the room. Air conditioning worked well. Room was very clean. - Parking: parking was easy in the day. We lucked out at night but guests arriving after 8pm had nowhere to park, which we witnessed first hand. We saw a guest told the staff "the lot is full", and the staff said "just take the EV spot". What about your guests with EVs who need to charge their cars for the night? On another day, a large car was parked in the entrance into the hotel (not the street) and stayed there for 15 min which blocked entry for everyone else - i wish the staff came out to inform the guest that they couldn't leave their car the. The main lot is very tight with slim spots and awkward parking angles, but the back lot was good . While this wasn't an issue for me, I can imagine coming off of a long flight, finally getting to the hotel at night, and being frustrated at the lack of available parking. - Breakfast: this is the main reason we wanted to stay here. The breakfast itself is good, not great. The French toast, juice, chia pudding and eggs are best things - everything else is okay as I found some things to be stale such as the waffles and muffins. I did enjoy how the food is displayed, and there lots of variety. Staff is constantly refilling items so you never have to worry about things running out, regardless of when you arrive for breakfast. Breakfast is much later than it is at other hotels, and with a small window (8-10am), which can be an issue if you are planning to eat early prior to a hike. 2 staff stay in the area however they just stare at you from the corner of the room. No smile, no good morning. The first day, I felt like we were being stared at as if we were freeloaders sneaking in for free breakfast. It was very uncomfortable. Not sure if they were staring because we're younger than a majority of the other guests but there really is no excuse. I think they should do a wrist band system or something if they insist on eyeing people. Property- they have a cafe by the breakfast area where you can order hand crafted pizza. We didn't do this but it smelled great. The location is convenient with lots of restaurants within walking distance . As a hotel guest, you get a discount at the Foray restaurant, which is closed mondays and Tuesdays Overall: Beautiful, but I don't think I'd stay again. For the price point and all the amenities, I expected to be in love with this hotel. At other hotels with this price point, I'm usually like "I don't want leave!", but not here. It wasn't a bad stay, but the experience didn't match the price point. I hope they get better staff or else I could see this hotel failing in the future.

We booked one of the double rooms with a fireplace. While the room itself was fine, the walls and ceilings are extremely thin.
