Tina is the best! I stayed here for a few nights for a TV productions and Tina was hospitable, friendly and fun. I love the large sze bathrooms. The bed was very comfortable too. I even forgot my laptop charger and she was so kind to call me to let me know. She ultimately walked over to UPS and mailed it back to me. She only charged me for the UPS delivery. Simply amazing! This heritage property is friendly, charming and comfortable. Built in 1913, it offers clean, well-furnished rooms and polished public spaces with a vintage personality. It's rated a 2* hotel but sure didn't feel like it. We found it welcoming and enjoyed our stay. Our room was well-furnished, with microwave, fridge with two free bottles of water, a Keurig coffee maker and a folding luggage stand. The mini-bar prices are guest-friendly: just one dollar for M&Ms, Pringles, energy bars, cookies, candy and canned soft drinks. We heard zero noise from busy Santa Clara Street in our 4th floor rear room, and none from other rooms either - not with two feet of concrete between floors, according to the friendly manager. The free-standing heater/air conditioner was a bit noisy, but not enough to bother us. The towels were not plush but definitely a step up from what you might expect in a 2* hotel. The hotel has off-street parking; it's free if you book on their website. The included continental breakfast offered a good variety of baked goods, pastry, cereal, fruit and yogurt. The three kinds of coffee - medium roast, decaf, and New Orleans style dark roast with chicory - The three kinds of coffee - medium roast, decaf, and New Orleans style dark roast with chicory - were on the weak side. For a full breakfast try the Whispers Cafe and Creperie, a block and a half south on Third Street. I don't get why this hotel got 3 stars on yelp (as the time of reviewing) because the quality if service they provide is really good and the owner was really caring of guests. They really deserve 5 stars in my opinion. I arrived very tired and got checked in pretty late but the lobby was open and the door was opened for me without having to call them. The room was very clean, perfect for covid time. They have all the amenities (toilet stuff are very good). And even free water bottles and free coffee in the room. With the price, they provide free breakfast. It's not the most luxurious 5 star hotel breakfast but not just cold cereal! They have yogurt, egg, sausages, many options for bakery. Very nice!! So, in short, it's a great hotel, great location in downtown San Jose. 2 mins walk to VTA station. Very quiet neighborhood. Totally recommend! read more

I've had the pleasure of staying at this hotel. They have excellent customer service and feel like they actually care about any issues or advice on the area. Yes there are homeless people and people on drugs, this is downtown San Jose. What do you expect? It is best not to walk by yourself at night in MOST PLACES in the BAY AREA. For the price and easy access to so many downtown hot spots, you can't beat it. It is not a full luxury hotel, but it is clean, safe, and the best price you will get in the area. Do not stay here. Service is horrendous to begin with. Not sure if that's just how the front desk person is or because she was literally the only employee I saw all day, all night, and all morning the following day. The lady couldn't find my reservation under my name despite me telling her I could give her my registration number. She wouldn't accept the fact that I had booked through a third party app and because she didn't know it she kept telling me that she didn't think the app even existed. I finally got her to look it up through the reservation number and told me that she did have my room but it was going to be an extra $25 for my additional guest. I was shocked but I didn't want to argue anymore so I agreed. The room was dirty: peanuts under the bed, dusty countertops, the shower curtain smelled like it hadn't been washed in a while. I asked for more towels and toiletries and all I was give was an extra towel that had been sitting inside a filing cabinet for who knows how long based on the smell. I didn't get any extra toiletries, which were needed, but kind of glad I didn't get as they felt and smelled cheap and low quality. Walls are paper thin so you'll hear everything that's happening around you. Everything. What flabbergasted me the most was the fact that the window to our 4th story room opened all the way. There was no screen, no railing, nothing to make sure you wouldn't fall straight through it if you were clumsy or just happened to be next to the window which in this case the bed was right up to it. According to the California Code of regulations, title 8 "(5) Guards shall be placed over windows which are not of the shatter-proof or wired glass type. (Title 24, Part 2, Section 2-3303(b)(2)(D).)". Though because of the style of window, I'm not sure if this applies. Do not make the mistake of staying here. Pay up a little more and stay somewhere else even if it's a bit more expensive. The one star goes to the gentlemen in the parking lot who was very nice and walked us to the door of the hotel even offering to carry our bags. read more

The only reason this is not a one star rating is that the staff is very friendly. I got to the hotel and was checked in. No problem, went to my room. The room was serviced, so I dropped off my bags and went to town. Later that night I came back and go ready for bed. Then the trouble started. The sink in the bathroom had caked on soap stains, there was a drop of blood on the floor of the bathroom by the toilet. When I tuned on the shower faucet, in the valley with chronic water shortages, I noticed it took a long time to heat up. In fact, the next morning I measured 2 and 1.2 minutes to warm up if one turned on the bathroom sink faucet as well. The shower floor is incredibly slick and I nearly slipped several times. The door was the typical auto-close hotel door with the added "advantage" of not quite closing enough to latch. This means that if the guest does not physically pull the door shut, it only looks latched. I have made and posted videos and pictures for all of this. When I came back on the second day there, and it was time for bed, I pulled down the comforter. I was taken aback to see that their method of Making a bed is simply to pull the comforter up over the rest of the bed without touching the sheets. Again I have posted a video. Their literature said "Newest Boutique Hotel" but this is hardly of that caliber. The price was excessive for service of this level. I expected much better. read more

Disappointing. Other reviews have mentioned problems with the A/C. In our room the vent was installed so that it blew directly on to one side of the bed. Pulling blankets over my head it was fine. The big problem was that it was very noisy. If I got to sleep the A/C would wake me when it came on. Eventually I turned the A/C down to 70 and turned it off when it got there. That way we could get to sleep and stay asleep. Other than that it was OK. Well the "breakfast" was so vile that they would be better off not even pretending to offer breakfast. Two positives. The staff were terrific, very accommodating. The prices on the snacks and drinks in the room were unusually low: most were a dollar. Still, I would not want to stay here again. read more

The employees are very nice and for the most part my review doesn't reflect them. My review is on the area. As a single female traveling for work, I felt extremely unsafe. The second you walk out the hotel there are people loitering and begging for money. I witnessed 2 fist fights and people screaming at one another. The door to the hotel is locked after a certain hour but I'm not sure when. I was waiting for the elevator and a guy was watching me from the outside and tried to jump in the elevator with me. Scary. I also had trouble falling asleep with the screaming and loud music outside at all hours of the night. The Subway restaurant across the street is shut down but the Starbucks was very convenient. I also enjoyed Hom Korean for dinner. The hotel is basic, no frills. I did like the daily 2 free bottled water and Starbucks coffee pods. The gym is basic.. 2 treadmills, a bike, and free weights. But the gym was clean. Actually the entire place was very clean and it's obvious the staff works hard. Overall, if you are a female traveling alone .. you might want to go elsewhere for safety reasons. read more

Sitting here awake because there is a super loud nightclub across the street that is vibrating the walls of my room and doesn't close until 2am. This area has many homeless people and people on drugs on the streets and felt very unsafe for walking back from the convention center by myself at night. read more

Great little Hotel! Parked in the lot paid one fee and walked to Original Joe's and then to the Improve. After the show it was maybe .1-10th of a mile back to Hotel. Rooms are clean didn't mind the street noise, just closed the window. The only down side A/C vent is right above the thermostat causing it to kick off A/C when the rest of the room is still warm. I selected this hotel solely based on proximity to the convention center and price. Both positives for the area. So Price and Proximity account for one of the two stars. The second star is given for the absolutely enchanting staff who worked the desk. So willing to help and make recommendations! Now for why there aren't 3 more stars... 1) Very noisy on street side rooms. Made worse by the fact that the heating/air conditioning unit works sporadically at best and forces the window to be opened making it louder. Pick your poison. 2) Very uncomfortable and old mattresses. Don't expect tempurpedic, or even pillow top. My daughter and I woke up sore both days. They were pretty lumpy and neither of us are "princesses" 3) Bathroom lights are on some eco friendly system that has you waving your hands in the dark to find the toilet paper, since it's motion sensor activated and shuts off every 10 seconds. I counted. There are no less than 40 combinations to try to extend the "on time"'(I think I tried about 30 of them before giving up) 4) Charges, charges everywhere. $20/day to park. $5 for missing card. $3 for a Keurig cup for your in room coffee (none provided) Everywhere you look is a sign for what you will have to pay if you partake. 5) One operating entrance. There are 4 doors to get in, 1 of them work. You have to walk around the block to access the building. And lastly 6) we stayed for 2 nights, we returned from the convention center to our room on day 2 at 3pm and it hadn't been serviced. We were out of the room from 7am-3pm and no one came during that huge block of time despite us seeing NO other guests for 2 entire days (Not in any of the halls or common areas at least) They did come at 3:30 with fresh towels. I would love to take the desk staff and plant them in a different hotel with better amenities. A disappointing experience overall read more

San Jose is an interesting town, as is this little hotel. The rooms are clean, the staff is pretty nice, but you also feel like you're at a hotel in Asia just a little - the workout room is tiny but serviceable, no elliptical and I can touch the ceiling when on the treadmill. (I'm 5'4"). Definitely a converted office building. Location is not bad - walking distance to the downtown center, some restaurants and bars and right next to a university campus. However, also in a highly attractive area for the homeless, and I don't mean as a place to beg. They sleep there and will follow you back to the hotel. I was here for business so didn't hang at the hotel a ton. The rooms are nice and clean, huge TVs and a nice little continental breakfast buffet. All in all, I would stay here again! read more

A really nice staff, great location, cozy vibe, good AC and lighting were all a plus - However, our bathroom was not clean at all - there was hair all over the floor and a dirty sink. We weren't sure if this was required but the window had no net / safety barricade. Lastly, small things like no soap in the bathroom (only body wash), stale cereal, a warped mirror, and toxic tasting tap water brought our score down to a 2 stars. read more

All in all the room was your typical hotel room. Clean with amenities like snacks in the room and in the mini fridge plus it had a huge bathroom and the location is good. Close to bars(request a room in the back), restaurants and transit. However, My partner and I were surprised and a little insulted when checking in and the lady at the front desk continuously asked us if we were sure we wanted the king size bed and kept trying to suggest we move to 2 Queen beds. I enjoyed staying at this hotel. They took in this traveler as my previous hotel was really bad and I had to switch. I was here for the USFS championships, and the hotel was clean, breakfast was included, and a great value. There were homeless people on the streets outside, but after encouragement from the hotel staff, I did venture out quite a bit. There are many students from the university walking around during the day, so I felt safe much of the time. It's just the area-a bit shocking for this Texan. You can walk to the train station , it is just a few blocks away from the hotel and go directly to the airport. It's possible not to even need an Uber. Plenty of dining options near the SAC center. Whole Foods is a few miles away, but I love walking. I would definately stay here again. The hotel is also super secure. Your key gives you access to the building, and the elevator won't go up without swiping your key, The rooms won't open without your key. read more

Hidden gem of a hotel located downtown next to our conference held at the SJ Rotunda, literally next door to City Hall. Parking was a plus, a convenient option if you have a rental. Public garages are nearby. Room was spacious and clean. Request an upper floor away from the main street. Overall, great location and easy walk to nearby coffee houses and restaurants. I recently reserved 17 rooms for a three day college reunion--Class of 1965 from West Point--who came in for activities centered around golf and the San Jose State Football Game. Tina Pham, her son Henry, and the entire staff were first rate!! Wonderful rooms, great service, all very professional and a wonderful experience all around. My wife and I recently stayed here for 5 days. The hotel staff was more than accommodating. They were very friendly and constantly asked if we needed anything. A free breakfast was served every morning at 6:00AM. It was centrally located and near the California Theatre where our son was performing. And yes, there are numerous homeless people not only in the downtown area but throughout San Jose. This problem need to be addressed immediately by the city fathers. We were never approached by any of the homeless. The hotel has several cameras and monitors their entry areas constantly. I used this hotel for my wedding weekend. We booked about 18 rooms here and the staff was FABULOUS!!!! they went above an beyond to make sure my guest and I felt welcomed and taken care of. I can't count how many time I had my guest say amazing choice in hotel they are so friendly and hospitable here. I'm glad I choose to stay at this hotel. It can get a little noisy if you face the street but nothing that's crazy loud. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a good room and AMAZING service. Hotel had terribly rude service. . Hotel smells and the mattresses are so nasty. Cockroaches left and right! Tried to park in the parking lot off of 3rd st and the man in charge at night time was very disrespectful, seemed a bit racist if you ask me! This would have been a relatively nice hotel but there were several things that went wrong during my stay. I stayed here during the summer when it was 100+ degrees outside, we came to the hotel hoping to relax and cool off after the hot day. Once we got into our room it was very hot inside, we turned on the Ac and gave it a couple hours to cool down. After those hours went by the room was not cooled off at all. It was still 86+ degrees inside our room. We let the front desk know and were told to just keep messing with the ac unit it should work. We spoke with many other guests staying at the hotel too, all of which had the same complaint of the Ac not working. At 12am we were covered in sweat as the thermostat in the room read 92 degrees. We went downstairs again to talk to them about it, they sent a guy up to our room and all the guy did was look at our thermostat and say "yes the thermostat is working." And then walked out of the room. There was no where else to go at that point so we had to stay the rest of the night there. In the morning we went to the front desk once more to ask for our room to be comped, there were several others down there asking the same thing. They told us since we booked through a travel site that they would have to contact them for our rooms to be refunded and they promised they would do so. Hopefully that happens because this was the worst night of my life. It felt like we were in a sauna the entire night and barely got any sleep. We also found a spider in our room, I don't know how it didn't die from the heat. I do not recommend staying at this hotel at all! read more

What a gem find in San Jose! After a terrible stay at another hotel I was extremely happy to find Hotel Clariana. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and the service was amazing. We came in very late at night tired from the day and they had us checked in and in our rooms within 15 minutes. We were able to stay within our budget for the trip and enjoy our stay. This place is definitely worth checking out. Close to downtown San Jose as well! read more
