This was a disaster from beginning to end - definitely not what we have experienced at Marriott…read moreproperties. Check-in was done online but despite arriving at 9:00 pm we were not assigned a room online. We went to the front desk and were given our room and physical keys. We got to our room and it was VERY warm inside. I immediately went to the wall thermostat and it had a black screen and was clearly not connected. I went to the unit attached to the wall/window and it was set to 70° and it was not 70° in the room. We called the desk and they said they would call maintenance, which they did. He arrived about an hour later and noted it clearly was not cooling. He began to look at the unit and noticed it was on 'fan' and not 'cool'. He had no idea why it was on fan. Fortunately it began to cool. I asked about the wall unit thermostat control and he said that as they began to fail in rooms they were disconnected. Not good. While we were waiting for maintenance the front desk clerk said they were adding 10,000 points to my rewards which I appreciated. When we finally got ready for bed, the pillows were the flimsiest pillows I have ever seen in a Marriott property and we asked for 'real' pillows, which the staff brought up. The pillows they brought up were what the room pillows should have been like. On Saturday we took showers and were shocked that the towels were almost see through with worn tears and rips in them. Again, not consistent with Marriott standards. We were gone for the day and when we got back that night we jumped on the elevator with two other folks before the doors closed - then we all realized - the doors wouldn't close. I went to the front desk to tell the clerk and she said 'yeah, we know' and then went back to using her phone. I asked if they were going to put a sign on it and was told 'we'll get to it'. I told the other guests the response and they were not happy either. We got back to our room and couldn't use any streaming devices because the tv said 'unable to connect to the internet'. We called the front desk and they said they would have someone look at it the next day. We were gone all day on Sunday and when we returned housekeeping had serviced our room which was great - no issues there. The streaming worked fine on the tv so we presumed it was corrected. We were gone most of the day on Monday. When we returned the tv was back to the 'unable to connect to the internet' again. As on Saturday night we couldn't log in to our Netflix, Prime or Pandora accounts - couldn't even get to those screens. We again called the front desk and were again told that someone would check it out the next day and were told they were adding another 10,000 points which was appreciated but it was becoming clear the property had problems and the answer was adding points. A mixed 'solution' We got up Tuesday and I had a folio in my email in-box which surprised me because when I originally booked the reservation on-line it did erroneously (probably my error) indicate a checkout of Tuesday. When I got the email confirmation on March 17, 2025 at 9:17 am I reached out to Marriott and they said I could contact the property directly, which I did on March 17, 2025 at 10:30 am (CST). When I contacted the front desk, I was told they were sold out and we'd have to move to a different room with double beds. I asked to talk to the GM and Franita Tanner (the GM) said that was the case. When I explained what happened on the reservation, she said 'it looks like you booked online' - no kidding - I had just explained all that to her - it was as though she wasn't listening. She confirmed that we would have to move rooms if we wanted to stay. I told her we'd had problems and she said 'I see that' and then went on to essentially say that we were the only guests who had any problems; that the reservation, internet, room AC, pillows, towels, etc. were our issues and nobody else had issues. Wow! I asked her if this property had been given a Marriott waiver from having to 'refresh' their rooms because they were clearly not up to Marriott requirements - she said 'no' Ultimately we opted to stay at another hotel for Tuesday night. Aside from the clerk on her phone and the GM, the staff were all helpful, friendly and polite. The rooms were clearly old - the furnishings were mish-mashed; the only outlets by the bed were one electrical outlet in the lamp on each nightstand - there were no USB chargers anywhere. The pillows, as discussed, needed to be changed out a long time ago. The towels were clearly over-used and should have been replaced. Not sure what the deal is with the internet. We would definitely not return to this property. But for some of the great staff, this would have been a '1-Star' review.

They have a small heated indoor pool and a gym with free weights and a few ellipticals and treadmills. We were happy to find a Starbucks only three minutes away for morning coffee. We haven't seen the downtown yet but heard it is cute and walkable, only ten minutes away. I'd love to come back and hike Shenandoah National Park which is only a twenty minute drive. It was very clean and the water pressure in the shower was 10/10. Would recommend!

Our neighbors were shouting. I could hear everything they were yelling through the wall. When I stuck my head into the hallway, I had to laugh. They placed us next to the hearing impaired room -- it said it on the door! -- which I guess is smart if Fido is a barker. (My dog isn't.) I went to take a bath. The stopper didn't work. T turned on the air conditioner. That didn't work either. I called the desk clerk, a lovely person imported from a Hilton property in Texas. "This is awful," I said. "Please transfer us to a functioning room." And she did. Thankfully. Got a good night's sleep. Again, not thrilled with that stupid bathroom set-up. Picked up our bagged breakfast the next morning, loaded my stuff and my dog in the car, and off we went.

I chatted via the app pre-arrival to see if we could get an upgrade and was able to get into a larger room. Laurie was able to help. Easy check in on arrival via the app. The room was spacious and clean. I walked into a perfect cool temp room. The bed was comfy bed and there was a hot shower. The room had a safe and fridge too. Only downside was the pool was closed for maintenance. I did bring along my trunks but not the end of the world. The service was great here and this is a really nice hotel. A little older but adds to the charm and my room was nicely updated. Thank you, Laurie, and everyone at the DoubleTree for such a nice stay.

They gave me a warm cookie after checking in and the next morning 2. Room air conditioner works well 3. Room was cleaned well and had nice decor (pictured) 4. Shower pressure was ok and the bathroom generally looked nice (pictured) 5. Parking options completely surrounding the hotel 6. Close to the highway 7. Beautiful town 8. The group rate we got was about the highest I'd comfortably say it was worth to me. The regular rate wasn't too much higher, but it would be pushing it for me to end up staying here if I were visiting on my own. 9. Plenty and all types of shops and restaurants very close, nearly walking distance. Not so good: 1. Entrance light was busted (pictured) 2. Sink stopper busted (pictured) 3. TV remote with painters tape for a battery cover (pictured) 4. I had a room on the second floor with a window facing an internal hallway that had a constant bright light that I could have done without. Would prefer not having window in this situation personally. 5. Shower supplies empty or nearly empty (pictured). The body wash was empty so I just used the bar of soap. I didn't inform the staff of any issues to see how they'd remedy anything since they weren't issues that had much of any impact on my short stay. Otherwise, the pool and gym looked nice, but I didn't make time to experience either. I wouldn't mind staying here again for the group rate we were graciously provided.

3 important facts about the author: I grew up in a poor rural community and have slept in several…read moreless than ideal settings, I NEVER leave reviews and I have been a loyal Bonvoy member for more than a decade. I prefer Marriott properties for all stays but Courtyard is my specific preference for single night stops. I have stayed in Marriotts all over the US and Courtyards in nearly every state east of the Mississippi. The Harrisonburg, VA Courtyard is by far the worst Marriott property I've ever visited and is in contention for worst hotel (or motel for that matter) I've ever seen. We made reservations a month in advance (quick turnaround myth busted), checked in around 9 pm (3 hours after online check-in...in a rush myth again busted), mom/dad, two kids and two dogs after a 12-hour day of travel. The parking lot literally looked like it was staged for a bad horror movie. The letters on the marquee and main building signs that actually worked were barely visible, the lighting & atmosphere in the parking lot screamed 'hand-crafted by criminals seeking lower risk hunting grounds', complete with the token one flickering light in the center lot (not kidding). Our room was just disgusting - damp floors, mold and mildew in the bathroom, dirty/un-flushed toilets, urine stain on the sofa bed mattress, sticky/grimy surfaces, faulty AC...just the works. Visited the front desk, was told there were no replacement sofa mattresses available...was NOT offered any form of an acknowledgement or apology but was offered a different room and a clean (I guess) bedding set. Given the conditions mentioned above, confidence the other room would be in better or different condition was less than high...and if it was, one would immediately wonder why it wasn't assigned to us in the first place. Faced with the choice of uproot wife, kids, dogs & luggage at 10 pm or endure damp, mold, urine and filth, we chose to gut it out as a sleep & go, halfway stop on a long road trip. One can only hope the local bedbugs have enough decency and self-respect to stay in better places than this. Stay tuned for updates there. I don't like absolutes but I can say, with certainty, I will NEVER stay at this property again and truly cannot think of anyone I dislike enough to recommend it to. Sleeping in our car in a random RV lot would have been a more relaxing and enjoyable experience.
