Friendly staff and reasonable pricing with free parking in the heart of the town. Minutes from the elevator and the river walk. Nice views of the Mississippi. Old fashioned decor on the lobby and rooms. Darker wood adorns the lobby nice bar attached with good happy hour .

Done correctly and maintained properly an older historic property can be nice; unfortunately, this property misses the mark. The temperature in my room was all over the place, and the thermastat seemed to make no difference. The furniture in the room was old dirty and beat up; drapes had holes in them. The bed was very firm. The TV in the room had a terrible picture and about 60% of the channels didn't work. The bathroom looked like it had been remodeled in the last few years, but whoever did it did not place rubber seals around the glass door, so lots of water ended up on the floor. The towels were rough and thin, also there were only three left in the room that had two double beds. I stayed for three nights, and the room was never serviced. I got it during the pandemic why hotels did this but at this point it's far enough past that it is time to stop being cheep, your charging $180+ night; it does not take long to exchange towels and empty trash once on a three night stay.

I chose my hotels based on how I feel and what I'm doing so sometimes I want a nice room in a nice hotel and sometimes I just need a place sleep in besides my car and it doesn't matter. When I thought about a trip to Dubuque IA and Priceline popped up this hotel I fell in love with grand comfortable seating areas all over the beautiful lobby and the fireplace cozy area is my favorite. I researched the hotel and it's like 180 years old, rebuilt once after a fire but still 180 years is amazing. They have a lounge and a restaurant and spa packages. The pool is big and they have an exercise room also. I had the executive king room on the 7th floor over looking the river which has a great view. I would say that my room was nice with stone finishes and real wood furniture. A nice walk in glass shower and a flat screen was in my room. It had a fridge, Keurig Coffey set up and real glasses in the room. The lobby of the hotel is absolutely beautiful and parking is free. Across the street you have an aquarium, casino, water park and a winery all in one area. My key cards went dead so house keeping let me in my room and I called the front desk and they promptly sent two fresh key cards up to my room. Overall it's a very nice hotel that does show some wear but it's only perfect once and it's used 24 hours a day 7 days a week and I would only stay here again when I'm in Dubuque for sure.

    Lipstick on a cup. Yuck

Wanted to stay here memorial weekend Saturday and Sunday but Saturday all booked. Stayed here Sunday night after exploring Galena IL and Aquarium. Parking is across the street in a lot. This is a historical hotel in downtown Dubuque. The lobby is fancy and the room. I walked down to the pool but it was super cold and a couple was extremely amorous in the hot tub so I returned to the room. They had an older tv channel that had Chips on. Oh the memories from childhood. They have a chair and ottoman for watching tv. The room was spacious and had a shower stall in bathroom. The beds were very comfortable. K cups and a keurig is in the room and a fridge. Again no microwave. My only critique is maid needs to bring cups to a dishwasher not wipe them as there was lipstick residue on a cup. Yuck! Otherwise great stay and highly recommend.

What a great find in Dubuque! I stayed here for a week on business. Upon entering the hotel, you are greeted with an upscale lobby and friendly staff at check-in. There is a bar attached to the north. They had ample parking (in front of and behind the hotel). The good impression continues throughout the hotel. I had a large room which had a bedroom area, soaker tub and spacious bathroom. My room was a on a corner and had 8 windows! It was missing a luggage rack so I had to put my luggage on the floor (I asked co-workers if they had one, and they did). I noticed that the room was warm so I attempted to make it cooler in the room with no luck. I stopped in at the front desk when I came back from meetings and they adjusted it to the temperature I specified. Unfortunately, it continued to be unpredictable. The air conditioning is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. I would definitely stay at Hotel Julien again!

I had to finally call and the lady appeared. I was quickly checked in which I did appreciate. Not with the same attention I have been in the past but checked in nonetheless. I checked in on the mobile app requesting a late check out of 4pm. I should have realized someone wouldn't go to bat to help but realized my request didn't go through until the morning. I asked as soon as I went down an was told there was nothing she could do since it was too late. I don't doubt she couldn't do anything as she wasn't empowered to do it. Said someone from "sales" would be in and they could help. When I returned, it was the same woman and had to ask if she was able to get someone to help and she said she could do anything. Before that I had asked her to try for a late checkout at 1 which she said was likely the most she could do. That was granted and as disappointed in the failure of the app I was happy to have that since I had no place to go for a few hours. Unfortunately, I don't believe she tried to go above and beyond that. Prior to that, I had come down the evening before to wait for Uber Eats to no one behind the desk again. When she did come out, I asked for a a bag for the ice machine since we don't have a bucket. Was told I'd get a bucket she assured was clean. She came back and offered bowls. Bowls that you'd use for soup or ice cream. Because they don't have any ice buckets. Who is taking their ice buckets? Back to the morning of requesting a late check out, there was no one behind the counter again. Had to wait and the same person from the night before finally showed up. Understaffed? Not empowered? Doesn't care? Idk... disappointed in this stay and see lots of room for improvement.

I checked in on December 23, 2025, for a two-night stay while visiting Dubuque for the holidays. At check-in, I advised the front desk that I am a Hilton Gold member and asked about the availability of a room upgrade and the $15 per guest breakfast credit. I was informed that neither was available, which I accepted without issue. The following morning, we chose to purchase the full breakfast to support the hotel. Unfortunately, the buffet food appeared to have been sitting out for an extended period and was both unappealing and inedible, despite our arriving at approximately 8:00 a.m. We ultimately chose not to eat and returned to our room, though we still left a generous tip for our server. As part of my Gold status benefits, I received a text message requesting feedback on my stay. I responded honestly, noting my disappointment regarding the lack of an upgrade and having paid $35 for a breakfast I could not eat. I rated my experience a 3. Shortly thereafter, I received a voicemail from the general manager asking that I call him. During the call, his demeanor was confrontational, aggressive, and unprofessional. Rather than addressing my concerns about the stay, he focused almost exclusively on my rating and repeatedly demanded personal information about a family member who had enrolled me in Hilton's Friends and Family program. His tone was accusatory, and he spoke over me while insisting that I "should know how the program works," The conversation included what I perceived as intimidation and implied threats related to my status and future stays, leaving me feeling pressured and uncomfortable. After subsequently speaking with Hilton Corporate, I was informed that my Gold status benefits should have been honored regardless of the Friends and Family program. Based on the general manager's conduct during the call, I no longer felt safe or welcome at the property. As a result, I immediately checked out of the hotel, forfeiting my second night despite still being charged for the full reservation. I later learned that the general manager had contacted the Hilton Friends and Family program and had my benefits revoked. When I contacted Hilton to inquire why future reservations had been canceled, I was told that I had been labeled "rude and disruptive." This characterization is inaccurate and unjustified. I spent less than 18 hours at the hotel, used digital check-in and a mobile key, and had no confrontational interactions with staff beyond routine, respectful inquiries about my benefits.

This place is a disgusting shithole…read more I rolled into Dubuque late at night. The first room I was given smelled horrendously of cigarette smoke, so badly that my eyes started watering within seconds of entering the room. I went back down to the front desk and requested a new room. The guy started doing some things on the computer, then another employee walked in and they started speaking in Russian or some other Cyrillic language for several seconds. Kind of weird, because the second guy had greeted me when I first arrived, and he seemed perfectly fluent in English. It just seemed weird that two people who both seemed fluent in English would switch, discuss something, and then the first guy completed the discussion with me in English. The second guy, the one who had originally greeted, had red eyes and looked high AF. Just a really bizarre experience. I got to my second room and immediately noted that it sounded like a window was open. I checked, and it was. There was a faint smell of cigarette smoke in the room, and I am fairly certain that this window was left open to dissipate the smell. I turned on the lights and noticed that the placard on the phone was yellow with nicotine stain. Wtf? This is a fairly modern looking hotel. Certainly renovated not very long ago. What modern hotel has nicotine stains? Then I needed to use the toilet, and discovered that the bathroom stank horribly of cigarette smoke. Like someone had been smoking in there immediately before I entered the room. And it still stank just as strongly in the morning when I woke up. I think someone had been smoking in the bathroom with the exhaust fan on, thinking that it would magically make the stink not go everywhere else. I went downstairs for breakfast and there were biscuits on the hot food display. Just biscuits. No eggs, no bacon or sausage or anything else for hot food. I grabbed a biscuit and some jelly. I went to get a glass of orange juice, and the machine just discharged water. This was at 7:00, and breakfast hours start at 6:30. It's not like I got down to the breakfast area right at the beginning of breakfast and they hadn't had time yet to bring the rest of the food out or restock the juice machine with concentrate mix. If you're traveling into Dubuque, avoid this place. It smells bad, the breakfast is literally just biscuits, and you can't even get a glass of orange juice to wash down your biscuit.
