I would not stay here again unless management does a complete overhaul of how the hotel is run. It is woefully understaffed and maintenance is a joke. If they took care of the INSIDE of the hotel as well as the outside landscaping, that would be a plus. I stayed for 6 nights in one of the Gothic Suites. On day 2 the A/C for the bedroom area died. I had to call several times to get maintenance and they couldn't get it to work again but did they come back and tell me that? no, I had to call front desk again and maintenance had already left. I had to REQUEST fans as no one offered it to me. I did have the option of packing everything up and moving to the main hotel but that was not an option I wanted. The safe didn't work on arrival - DOA - they came and changed the batteries. Couldn't get the iron to work. Room service? one time my used tray that housekeeping took out sat in the outside hallway for 2 days straight - way to attract vermin! Went to the Restaurant for breakfast on morning of Day 2 and there was NO ONE at host station nor bar nor front desk - I finally found the one person serving as hostess/order taker/waitress coming out of the kitchen area with food and she indicated she was the only one there that morning. Again, woefully understaffed. One manager did call me on Saturday morning to apologize for the A/C issue but did anyone ever come back to my suite to fix it before I left Tuesday morning? Nope. I don't know who is running this hotel but they are doing a very poor job. Live by my credo: It is not what you EXPECT that counts but rather what you INSPECT! read more

I've been a guest here several times over the past 4 years. It's my go to in Northampton and I don't think I would consider staying anywhere else. It's an odd building (probably a few buildings cobbled together for the main hotel) but very charming. The restaurant and bar are strangely designed but definitely comfortable. The lobby area is large and welcoming. There's a beautiful front porch that is enclosed and looks like it was once a fully outdoor porch. I always find myself camped out there for part of the visit. You can find outlets to charge phones and laptops here and in the lobby as well. They have additional buildings and I've stayed there as well. Everything is very comfortable and you can make a short or long term stay work out very well. People are nice as you might expect. On our most recent visit, our room 300 was noticeably musty but opening the window for a while seemed to clear that up. Parking is limited if you want a space near the hotel. They have 10 minute spaces to allow guests with heavy bags to unload and there's a one story elevator to the parking lot to make the building accessible to anyone. The location could not be better. You can walk to a variety of excellent restaurants and shops. It is very easy to find and a few minutes off I-91. If you're a runner, take a left out of the front door and Smith College and a very nice park are just up the street. There's a reproduction tavern under the restaurant that I think may only be open for brunch on Sundays? I've never noticed it being open. There's an outdoor garden patio that could not be more beautiful. I think I recall seeing them serving out there but don't hold me to it. I'm usually here in the winter or shoulder seasons. There must be a reason why they don't use this as their main bar. Possibly accessibility? It's just another one of the odd layout dynamics of the Hotel Northampton. I would characterize it as charming. The bottom line is that I would stay here as often as I could. I don't even consider looking somewhere else when in the area. I think you would enjoy it if you gave it a try so please do! read more

I had been at the Hotel Northampton before and loved it. I thought it would be the perfect place to celebrate 35 years of marriage with my wife. It turned out I was mistaken. We expected to be in the main building and were disappointed to be placed in the Gothic Garden out building. The first room we were in had a broken air conditioner and the temperature of the room was 78. After speaking to the staff a man in a suit with a walkie talkie came over. He tried but failed to open a window and poked at something on the air conditioner unit. Nothing changed and about 3 hours later, I went to the main building to report it. Amazingly, they had a room upstairs. The air conditioner worked in this room, however it was fighting with the 78 degree temperature and went on for 20 minutes then off for 20 minutes repeating this cycle all night. It would have been ok if it didn't sound like a jet engine at the foot of the bed. And the mattress was so pillowy that you couldn't move once on it. Neither my wife nor I slept and not for a good reason. When I checked out, I mentioned the discomfort and noise and the staff only wanted to know if I wanted my receipt on paper or by email. Highly disappointing and expensive mistake. read more

The hotel was fine, the restaurant was not. Ive had good meals there in the past but, perhaps because they are between managers, dinner was pretty sad. The Tuscan Salad was missing several ingredients mentioned in the menu, included rotten pieces of lettuce, and was overladen with roasted garlic cloves. (After the first 5 or so I opted out of the remaining 10.) The balsamic dressing was way too sweet. I only got it because they were out of the one i wanted - they were out of a lot of dishes. My dining companion noted that his food wasn't very warm, the carrots were inedible, and did I mention it took a long time for our food to come even though there were hardly any other diners ? Finally, we had a lemon cream cake for dessert that was almost painfully sweet. read more

Hotel Northampton is located in downtown with parking right on site. One of my closest friend's from college had her wedding here and we all had a fabulous time. Northampton is a nice change of pace compared to our busy lives in Boston-- with its small town feel and hipster vibes. Most of us went to college in Amherst, so venturing to this side of the state was a reminiscent experience. It's weird to think we are full blown adults now. Where does the time go? The hotel was charming and the staff were warm and gracious. Although our hotel room was is a little antiquated, it was clean and spacious, which we found far more important than the decor. read more

Stayed here with my wife for a weekend. It is a lovely old building (although the rooms certainly show their age). On the last night, there was a fire in the kitchen directly downstairs from our room. When we were allowed to return to the building, the smoke/chemical smell in our room was overwhelming and there was no way we could safely stay there that night. They offered to move us to a room directly on top of a raucous wedding that had taken over the entire first floor/lobby/parking lot (which I guess is a thing that they do without warning?) We refused and were offered a different (but not at all equivalent) room in a building across the parking lot. We packed up all of our stuff in a chemical/smoke-filled room as quickly as we could and hoofed it across the lot with no offer of assistance. In the morning, we were told that there would be a meeting about the situation but that, rest-assured, there would be compensation for such a major inconvenience that basically ruined the last night of our stay. The entire charge was put through later that day and nobody ever reached out to us. We have tried every day since to get in touch with a manager but they have been dodging our calls and refusing to call back. Might consider changing this review if somebody actually ever returns our calls. read more

Can not reach anyone to make dinner reservations, called for two weeks straight, left messages. No return calls. Front desk staff was not helpful and rude. There was no concern or indication the customer service would ever improve. They appear to use subpar and rude standards as their normal threshold. It used to be a good restaurant in the hotel but from the recent reviews on Yelp it looks like it has gone down hill since covid. We will continue our business for boutique hotel and fine dining at Delany House nearby... Highly recommend it read more

We stayed for Mother's Day weekend and had one of the best brunches we have ever had. Located smack in the middle of town, walking distance to everything. Sure it's old, but they have done a nice job (with a few small exceptions) of updating and blending the old and new. The lobby is open and airy with a large faux fireplace- a nice place to sit and read or, as one Mom did, play with the kids on the rug. Parking is in an outside lot directly behind the hotel. Cannot imagine what happens if they host a wedding though, as it was fairly full during our midweek visit. Our room, with a queen bed and view out to the street was super clean and sported a fully updated bathroom with a rain shower head. Gilchrist and Soames soaps and conditioners are a nice kickup to the usual hotel toiletries. The bed was very comfortable although the TV off to the side, rather than on the wall directly in front, was a bit awkward. The only other knock was the lack of plug ins on the night tables. Adding lamps with USB plugs would be most helpful. All in all a nice spot and we would definitely return. read more

Historic hotel in the center of town. Room was clean. Rooms are not old but not new. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom spacious. Location was great. Walked around town easily enough with on site parking. Staff at check in and check out were very friendly and courteous. Hotel restaurant was dinerish and not great but after a day of travel we didn't even feel like leaving the hotel. Unfortunately I wanted to give this place a better review, but they have gotten terribly expensive. Last year we stayed on December 30 and the rate was $149 per night. This year they quoted us $179 for the first night (Friday) and $260 for the second, and that was with me walking in a few weeks before and asking if better rates were available. Needless to say, we ended up not staying there this year. We had eaten dinner in their restaurant and stayed one year ago and enjoyed it, but I could absolutely not justify the incredible increase in price in just one year. There are other hotels and amazing AirBNBs in the area much more reasonable priced. And where we ended up staying was actually a lot nicer, even if it was 10 minute drive. We enjoyed staying right in town and with a balcony room last year and snow falling it was beautiful. But not enough to pay that much more this year. read more

Stayed for 3-day work conference. Rooms are historic- could use a coat of paint maybe, but charming and not deteriorating. Food: not the worst but pretty standard "rubber chicken" fare. Roast pork was very good. Number one criticism is the portion size. These guys seem to be catering to children, not adults. Pork was good but three very small "chunks" per person is ridiculous. The chicken breasts must've been frozen from a supply house but these were the smallest we'd ever seen. Location of the hotel is great. Probably best to go offsite for food/drinks. Bartender was nice but no one liked the VERY orange-forward old fashioned. Good place to stay, mediocre places to eat and hang at the bar. read more

Our family always stays at the Hotel Northampton when we're in the area. It's so nice to be somewhere with historical significance for the area, well-kept and decorated, instead of a cookie cutter chain hotel. It's the only hotel in Northampton where you are steps from Main Street, and that convenience alone for dining out is wonderful. Also an easy walk to the nearby music venues, no worries about having to drive and park twice. The parking is spacious and safe, and the restaurants at the hotel are always delicious with excellent service. The rooms are clean and comfortable. I love the balcony rooms for the view and also getting a taste of the ever changing New England weather before you venture out of your room (do I need my gloves today? An extra layer?) The staff is friendly and helpful, I've stayed solo many times and never worry for anything. The atrium downstairs is cozy to sit in, and the lobby has the fireplace going in the winter months. I hope this hotel never changes! read more

Although it looks pretty the Service is terrible. My sister arrived from London, UK and when she asked if someone could help bring her luggage in, she was told there was no Porter and guests bring their own luggage in. She was in the King Deluxe room and the Balcony would not open. They don't include breakfast despite the very high rate. The neighboring hotel, Marriot, where my niece stayed provides breakfast and has a porter who comes out immediately and helps with luggage. For a hotel charging such high cost of rooms it does not supply much of amenities. No swimming pool or Gym. read more

OMG comically poor bar service. Like we're locals and went into Northampton for a drink before our 7:30 reservations at Waxwing and oh man-- the hotel bar was horrifically bad. The guy was using his bare hand to dip into a giant vat of olives (and the vat looked like it had detritus floating in it) to fish one up to put in martinis. No gloves. No washing of hands. Gross. Also waited a good 15 minutes for even him to acknowledge our presence. Didn't give us cocktail menus or anything. Completely ignored. It wasn't crowded-- 2 other parties at the bar. When he finally talked to us I asked about Pinot noirs and he just poured me something, didn't show me the label or anything else. And kind of slung it at me. Stayed here on a whim when our camping plans got rained on, thought we would splurge and see if it was worth it. Was a bit annoyed that the same day they quoted us a price for a room of over $450 when I could buy it online for under $300. Maybe thats the case for all hotels. The lobby is very pretty but sorta whatever. One of the staff was in a really bad move when she checked us in and I get that people have bad days but it was to the point where I was afraid to ask her for things (like a robe which I guess they only provide if you ask and don't just leave them in the room). Worth noting the person in the morning was super friendly. The room was comfy and nice but nothing special and on the small side. There was a spotlight that pointed almost directly at one of the windows, which was pretty annoying. The breakfast was pretty paltry given the price. Overall theres nothing wrong with Hotel Northampton... its just overpriced and nothing special to make it feel like it earns that price. So I couldn't recommend it unless you got dollars to burn. read more

What does Hotel Northampton have going for it? Location. But that's where it's advantages end. I've stayed here several times over the years and have consistently been less than impressed - especially for the price of the rooms. But I love the location! I was in town for a show at the Calvin this past weekend which is a quick jaunt to the main hotel and the Gothic Gardens ("new") building at the other side of the parking lot (which is the only place that I've stayed on this property). I booked this room last fall at a ridiculous rate of $314 per night (before taxes and fees) - but it was a giant suite and...hey!...ya get what you pay for, right? The suite had a jacuzzi tub, big, comfy leather couches in a separate seating area with a spacious bedroom. Sounds great, right? We checked in, dropped our stuff off and went out for the evening. When we got back to the room, the intent was to chill and watch some TV on those comfy couches. But...as we were starting to hang a few things in the closet, an ant infestation was noticed in the bedroom area. Skeeved? Yep. Called the front desk and had an awkward exchange with the girl at the front desk. She was new - so I'm cutting her some slack...but she actually said, "So what are your options?" when I reported the ant situation. Sigh. It took a manager almost 30 minutes to arrive and change our room. We went upstairs to MUCH smaller room and he assured us that the rate would be lower (but we didn't discuss specifics). He also said that he thought "the ant problem had been taken care of....sorry about that". Clearly this is an ongoing issue? So. Gross. But wait....there's more. Upon initial inspection, we observed that we were likely the only living beings in our new, much smaller room and decided to turn in for the night. The next morning...in the daylight....I really got a look at the room. How about a list? -Yea - ants still go upstairs. It wasn't an infestation, but I still managed to flush a few -unidentifiable carpet stains -clumps of (someone else's) hair on the floor -speaking of hair....how about some embedded long hair on the door frame of the bathroom? (again...someone else's) -worn carpet at the bathroom threshold -plenty of dead bugs in the lighting fixture above the shower for your viewing enjoyment -the mystery stain on the comforter (that was quickly piled up in the corner...as far away from everything as possible) -a toilet that requires holding down the handle to ensure flushing -a heater/air conditioning unit that was not only extraordinarily loud every time it went on...but that is propped up by pieces of wood -the "free" continental breakfast is extremely limited....if you need protein, you're out of luck (most chain hotels have significantly better choices) -this is petty - but the TV's are not HD....the skinniest person looks pretty plump on non-HD channels -and this is weird....when we checked in...we had to sign that we wouldn't smoke in the room...which is to be expected...but also that we wouldn't bring in any outside alcohol. Thankfully we aren't big drinkers and didn't really care, but maybe having a glass of wine in our living room to unwind would have been nice? They just want you to buy the alcohol at their bar/restaurant. Again...weird. -last...but certainly not least....we were greeted by a tampon (thankfully unused) in the small planter at the entrance of the Gothic Gardens building. It was still there 2 days after check-in. See my attached pics. Sadly, I'm still not done. The bill was left under the door...and the base price (before taxes and fees) for the new room....wait for it....was $288 per night. Ummm....wha? I called the front desk and spoke to a manager. After a few minutes, she said that I was not charged the correct rate for the "new" room...that it should have been $224. Still...WAY too much for this room - plus the horrendous experience. I made that known and she apologized but said that there was nothing more she could do on the price. Before leaving, I stopped by the front desk to get an updated folio. I also showed the manager (that I just spoke to on the phone) the pictures that I took....and assured her that I'm not usually this agitated...nor a super high-maintenance hotel guest. She was then much more apologetic and said that she's going to talk to the general manager. I won't hold my breath...it would be nice to hear from someone and get my money back for this awful experience. I literally wanted to go home and burn any of my belongings that touched any surface in either of those rooms. Save your money and stay elsewhere. This place is disgusting. read more

Disappointed I am very disappointed. I planned a trip to my alma mater and booked a room that was supposed to have a park view at what I thought was a really nice hotel. I got a shabby, extremely outdated, overpriced room on the alley side next to a humming ventilator. My room has a stained chair, a ripped curtain, dingy carpet, and very loud plumbing noises from other units at all hours. I was looking forward to showing my boyfriend my old stomping grounds and now I feel terrible for dragging him here. This place has no incentive to clean up its act. The nasty curtains, tacky artwork, and the air fresher smell that permeates will continue because the hotel has a built- in business with Smith College and music venues in such close proximity. The woman at the reception desk was pleasant and she did try to be helpful. She showed me another room, but it was not an upgrade. The bed is comfortable and the location of the hotel is great, but there are too many other factors that make it not worthwhile. Lesson learned. read more

Staff very helpful and friendly . Restaurant also good , my friend is still talking about the Lobster bisque soup , said the best ever ! I was very disappointed. We popped into the hotel bar for a cocktail around 8 pm. This was the first time we've been there since Covid started. We were completely ignored. The bartenders passed by us several times and didn't even acknowledge the group I was with. We waited 20 minutes before we decided to leave and move on to another venue. read more

Terrible customer service. I booked a room for my cousins wedding. when I showed up they said I booked for 2 nights and when I didn't show that they gave my room away. At that time they promised to refund my money and had me book a room at the sister property for twice the cost. When my money was not refunded I started to call. The front desk claims I have never called and there are no notes on my file. Then I am told the general manager will call me back which never happens even after I left a voicemail and tried to contact him in writing. I have now paid out $700 for one night when it should have cost me $200. Funny that I was sent to the sister property for double when my room magically disappeared. On top of that I would not have your wedding here unless you want your guests to wait in line for a drink all night, eat bad food and just have a mediocre experience. read more

Booked a single night stay here ($290.41) for a room in a wedding block as a member of the wedding party. I had previously lived in Northampton, so I never had a need to stay, but the reputation the hotel has was generally good I had heard, so I was excited to have an excuse to stay. Let's just say my excitement didn't last long. The price for a single queen bed and 1 night stay is a little high - I guess that's what you get for a historic building and its allure. I can live with that. I'm here to celebrate a wedding, not worry about lodging prices. First impressions - walk in and the room was dusty around the moulding all around the room. It was also dimly lit and didn't smell fresh. Deplorable for a "nice" hotel. Noticed the fire suppression system next (the sprinkler). Caked with dust and rust. I'm not even sure it would or could have worked in need. Serious safety hazard, and a major cause of concern. The AC unit was LOUD all night. When it intermittently fired up it made a harrowing noise that probably would have woken even the deepest sleeper, not to mention it looked like it was 30+ years old. Now I'm beginning to wonder: where does the money from customers go? Because it certainly isn't into renovations, room cleaning or upkeep of the appliances, even though the rooms range from $230-$400 a night and maybe more. The "complimentary" plush terry robes advertised by the website? Nowhere to be found in the room. Next morning, I wanted a shower to freshen up and clean off after the wedding. Not going to happen - the lever to work the shower was broken. So a broken plumbing fixture with a shower that couldn't work. Additionally I see the fit and finish of the toilet into the plumbing - who did this work? It's appalling. I've seen better fit and finish from a dingy motel with less than $100 a night pricing. Breakfast the next day? Nah, nothing offered. I'm not looking for an omelet and homefries as part of my stay or anything, just some toast/bagel and coffee would do - the continental breakfast. Not too much to ask, right? Bring some of these issues to the attention of the front desk at checkout, and can't get a single word of apology or anything from the staff. I was promised the manager would follow up to discuss a rate reduction as compensation for the condition of the room, which I was content with in the moment. The manager never did follow up, even after I followed up TWICE. As far as I am concerned, this is downright unacceptable and wholly unprofessional from the service industry, especially for a place that enjoys the reputation it does. Perhaps the Hotel management rests on its laurels from a time bygone. As far as my stay was concerned, it never began to even approach the level of quality and satisfaction the reputation would have you expect from a place whose website claims "Our greatest mission is to make sure our guests enjoy a comfortable and peaceful stay. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have." Well, when I did reach out, my concerns were basically brushed aside and I didn't feel like anything I brought forth was taken seriously. I am seriously questioning the whole experience and would NEVER return or recommend this place to anyone. This is an exorbitantly overpriced stay for the quality of the rooms and amenities and lack of customer service. If you're in Northampton, head to the Fairfield Inn. The 5-10 minute walk to downtown from the Fairfield Inn is well worth the slight inconvenience for the money you'll save and for the quality of your stay. While you won't be located right in the downtown area and have that convenience, you'll be saving yourself some cash. Bottom line - I would avoid the Hotel Northampton at all costs, both literal and figurative. read more

I don't even know what to say about our most recent experience (our experiences have progressively gotten worse over the years), but this takes the cake. We had breakfast at the hotel this morning. Here's the play by play: there is only one host and one server working. There are no other patrons in the restaurant. We order (no server notepad, just going by memory), and the server comes back to confirm my omelet order. A minute later, she comes back to confirm the type of toast I want. We wait, and we wait.. We see two tables get seated and then get their food before us (!!). She serves them but doesn't think to check in with us or notice we don't have our food yet. I flag her down to ask what the delay is. She says she'll check with the kitchen. Minutes later, she says it should be out shortly, with no apologies or explanation. The host eventually brings us our food. Both our meals are hot when they arrive, meaning they were only just made.. Upon receiving our meals, they forgot my wheat toast, gave my husband wheat toast instead of white... we flag down the server to relay this, say I'll take his wheat while she gets his white. He finally gets his toast (she apologizes) when we are done eating.. Then, we got a full priced check. I said something should at least be comped..? She looked surprised and took a minute. I summarized our whole visit of delays and mishaps. She said, "I could give you a discount." She has to check with a manager. We could hear her complaining about it to a coworker, saying she was going to get yelled at. We get a 15% discount ($5 !), "I got you 15%," and slides the check on the table and walks away. We're just happy to get out of there at this point, sadly. All the while, as we and the other patrons are sitting in the dining room, the host and server are loudly discussing multiple topics about work that should not be said in the floor, to include the breakfast hours opening too early and ending too early as the had to turn several people away for closing and losing money (which we agree with, to be honest; 10a is an early closing time, although based on what we saw, I'm not sure they'd be able to handle more guests?). This all stems from poor management. This is completely absurd - you are in the hospitality business, have an excellent breakfast, and have a beautiful location! This is not the experience people should be having here.. It's just an absolute shame. read more

Short Version: The price does not equal what you receive. The Hotel Northampton is a beautiful-looking historic hotel with a glamorous past. It has a glorious ballroom, really cool tavern built in 1786 in New Hampshire and transported to the site in Northampton in 1930. This is a beautiful place to have a drink or go to a conference, but it is NOT a beautiful place to stay overnight! The nice-sized rooms are not well-kept up; they are mildewy and damp, with cheap wooden furniture and tacky decor. There is nothing quaint about mildew! The bed was too soft; it hurt my back to get up in the morning. I've stayed in a lot of 4 and 5-star hotels, and this one is a 2-star. For an overnight stay, you get a free continental breakfast; the food at the Coolidge Park Cafe was so mediocre, we didn't want the breakfast. I can't speak for Wiggens Tavern. The room price reflects the history and the unique quality of staying in an historic hotel. Our room smelled bad, and was so humid, the sheets were damp. The lobby is frequently rented out; while checking in, we had to move past hoards of people there for a wedding. Don't stay overnight here unless kitsch = class for you. You will be sorely disappointed. Long Version: The Hotel Northampton is like an historic, upgraded Holiday Inn -- Historic like from the 1980's! There's nothing wrong with a Holiday Inn, when you're paying Holiday Inn prices and expecting a Holiday Inn. But, we expected better for $215.00 per night. We'd never recommend this place, EVER. Yes, it's historic; yes, the check-in staff are very friendly, yes, they have restaurants on site, and the Coolidge Park Cafe garden is beautiful with all the glass (like a greenhouse), but the food is not good. The hotel has a parking lot, which is nice, and, yes, the facility is clean. And, you can borrow umbrellas from the lobby, if it rains. But, just because a place is historic doesn't make it quaint. We had to get to our room a back stairway. Garishly- floral curtains with lace were the main colorful decoration in this room with cheap wooden furniture, and a large oval weird mirror. Our room smelled like Armpit when we arrived, and was so humid, (it felt just like New Orleans!), that our sheets and towels were damp! It was literally difficult to breathe, the air was so heavy! We had to put the air conditioning on full-blast. I felt tense and uneasy -- perhaps because our air conditioner was on high to decrease the moisture -- but it wasn't warm out (it was pouring rain), and I couldn't warm myself with the damp sheets! The mattress was so soft, I hurt my back getting up, and, I don't have back problems. The room was spacious, but sparse in decor, and it looked tacky. The bathroom featured a toilet with a very loud (but updated) flusher, and it wouldn't always flush down. There was a large flat-screened tv in the room, along with DSL, but you had to pay for DSL-access. As Yelper, Lauren V. commented, there was no fridge; which sucked as we had leftovers from Spoleto's (which I highly recommend!). Coffee (with coffee maker in the room), however, was available, which was nice. But, the water that was available in the room was $4 per bottle. In addition, we received a quaint $.95 cent bill, slipped under the door in the morning, (along with the $215.00/night room bill), which is supposed to be for city repairs. We had a gift certificate, but the room was so bad, I didn't want to even fork out $.95 for the extra charge. The WORST part, (after the damp rooms), however, is the lobby. Apparently, the Hotel Northampton got the brilliant idea to rent out the lobby to weddings or receptions. It may save them money, but it creates quite a headache for guests, not to mention the feeling of intruding on a party or vice versa. As hotel guests, we had to walk through someone's apps and drinks -- not to mention literally 100 guests to a wedding -- in order to get to the front desk!!! It was a fight to get to the front!!! But, we made it! :) We literally had to crash the party to check-in!!! Weird, weird, weird. The Hotel Northampton is WEIRD in every way (from the fake plants in the hallways, to the rented lobby, to the weird floral drapes and humid rooms to the exorbitant prices for what would normally be a very strange Holiday Inn. read more

Lovely, quaint hotel in the heart of Northampton. This place has special significance to my wife and her family, so we stayed here for a wedding. Beautiful old hotel, very well kept. The old wood columns, beautiful gold colored elevators, marble fireplace, and oriental rugs on the first floor make this place worth seeing. That said, the rooms and amenities are very old and need an update in a major way. The rooms just feel old, instead of the more desirable words like I used above for the lobby. The restaurant was mediocre at best. And for the price, you can do better, especially in the current world of airbnb and vrbo. Won't stay here again. read more

Possibly the most beautiful structure in town, the Hotel Northampton has been in business forever. It provides exceptionally comfortable accommodations and convenient location. It's truly a gorgeous hotel. Wiggins Tavern is a wonderful amenity of the facility. I've never had a bad meal there. When staying in Northampton, stay here. Consider no other hotel. Staying here will place you right next to everything downtown Northampton has to offer. Hotel Northampton was great. The room was very clean and the front desk staff were very helpful. The location is superb - right in the downtown of Northampton with easy walking distance to multiple shops, restaurants and to Smith College. I was a bit surprised when checking in they asked me to sign a document to agree that I would not bring any alcohol into my room. In 40 years of staying in hotels around the world I've never seen anything like that. Seems to me that they should eliminate this policy. read more

We only stayed for a graduation in the area, so didn't need muc. Unfortunately we got less than our low expectations. Incredibly unfriendly and unhelpful front desk person. Dropped the room keys on the counter with barely a word. When called to ask for something we forgot, we were told about a local spot "if they're open" I hate to write a bad review because everyone has a down day, but this was a whole careless vibe. Location is really the only advantage of staying here vs other options in the area. The decor is outdated, the bed was soft, and the room didn't feel fresh. Adding to the overall charm, the hotel failed to make-up our room while we were out to a wedding, so it was up to me to ask the night manager for clean towels at midnight. After telling me he would see what he could about crediting my bill, the morning manager told me she couldn't do anything for this type of incident in a very unapologetic way that had me hanging up the phone within seconds. I was expecting more based on the rates and website. We had an issue with the Jacuzzi tub, it shot mildew out when we turned it on. They cleaned the system and gave us a room discount but we did not want to use the tub again. The continental breakfast was mediocre. The menu breakfast options were better as I liked the homemade corned beef. The dinner menu seemed uninspired considering the rest of the town has some excellent and innovative cuisine (see our review on Bistro Les Gras). The bartenders were pleasant and the choice of drinks was good. Would we come back here? Maybe, if they had a package discount. read more

I'd love to give a higher rating, but I can't because despite the fact that the hotel is very historic, I saw zero ghosts. ZERO! I thought there'd be 18-22 ghostly experiences in my one-night stay, but alas, it was far less than that (again, zero). The beds were wildly comfortable, and the hotel itself has that nice charm of a grand-old-timey roaring-20s vibe. The location is perfect, tons of shops, bars, and restaurants nearby. There's ample free parking, and the rooms are clean if not fully modernized. The service was solid, but they seemed to be a little understaffed. Check-in was slow because there was only one person working the front desk at 2:30pm (check-in time), and our room--along with a few others--wasn't ready. There had been a wedding the night before and it seemed like too many people checked out late. Not a big problem, since we weren't in a rush, but that could be an issue if you have to be in your room ASAP. In summation: fine hotel, good location, solid but not perfect service, ZERO GHOSTS. read more
