It's the best place in John Day but saying that makes you realize they are the most expensive! Realistically I would give it 3.5 overall, it could be cleaner, it could cost less but the staff is friendly and it's convent for walking to get food and a drink. read more

Nice breakfast. Nice staff. Room okay, but could definitely use a deep clean and carpet shampoo!

PROS: Staff is friendly, and this BW is unexpectedly in the middle of nowhere. CONS: Room we were in smelled of cigarette smoke, shower head was precariously hanging from wall, the hot water ran out, the heater didn't work (it was 30 degrees that night), and hair dryer almost caught on fire and was smoking after about 10 seconds of use. Because of COVID, they have Grab and Go breakfast, but the only sign for it is at the front desk and is kind of obscured, so when you walk in, there is just an empty counter with only coffee. We grabbed coffee and creamers (those little "mini moos" half and halfs in the little containers) and poured it in, and they immediately curdled. Yuck! Had to pour the coffees out, and asked if they had milk. Nope. So we tried to drink the coffee black, but gave up because, well we didn't like it lol No one told us about the breakfast though - I found out because I happened to be standing there when someone else said, "Whats up with the breakfast?!" Why not tell people when they check in? Or at least put the sign where the breakfast stuff is??? We also traveled with our dog and the 3ft x 5ft patch of grass you can take your dog to do their "business" was so full of other dogs' "business", we ended up walking to a nearby park, bags in hand of course, at 6am. We did bring up these issues with the Front Desk and they credited us the pet fee of $30, which was nice of them. We still paid over $150 for a night here, which is totally reasonable for a BW, but $150 for this place?! No way. If you're a hunter and just need a place to crash for a few hours, I guess this is adequate. Very expensive, but adequate. For any other purpose, I'd advise to avoid this Best Western, unfortunately. read more

Ive stayed at best western for going on 3 years, the night girl was very helpful and friendly but the manager and morning front desk worker were both drunk and very disrespectful. The manager was drinking beer in the parking lot before noon and the front desk girl was with her smoking a cigarette and talking about other guests and employees loudly. The night before they had been partying in the parking lot and we had asked the girl to tell them to be quiet because we had to get up early, she replied with a yell and said what are they gonna do? Call management...thats how we knew she was the manager. They refused to swich us rooms because our room was not clean, there was pet hair everywhere and looked like the beds had been slept in, and would not discount our stay due to the pool not working and no amenities, very dirty and could not sleep because of the drinking party outside. Hands down worst place I've ever stayed! read more

This hotel is located in a quiet little town within easy walking distance of all the bars, restaurants and coffee shops that John Day, OR has to offer. It was a great stay with clean rooms and the staff was super nice. I would definitely stay here again if I were passing through. read more

What. A. Dump. Room stinks of cigarettes and disgusting air freshener/attempt to cover up awful smell. The carpet is frayed and dirty. I went to turn on the nightstand lamp and saw an empty soda can, an earring, candy wrappers, and about an inch of dust on the floor. So gross and so expensive for the location and quality. The front desk clerk was a total jerk -- there's no other way to say it. He was more interested in operating his smart phone than helping customers, and he said he didn't know how to add my Best Western Rewards number to my reservation. He then went on to ignore me, and accused me of being belligerent while I was quietly waiting for him to figure out how to check me in. Unbelievable. When I said forget it, I'll stay somewhere else, he said that would be preferable. Very poor customer skills exhibited by this gentleman. I can't recommend staying here. read more

BEWARE: This hotel (and all hotels in John Day) are about 45minutes away from the closest of the Fossil Beds (sheeprock) and about 1h 30minutes away from Painted Hills (the most spectacular of the fossil beds)... just plan accordingly. As of this review (2014 March), there's no reputed hotel in Mitchell, OR (the city closest to Painted Hills), but there are some (maybe 2 options) in Mitchell, OR - this city is about 10minutes away from Painted Hills. About Best Western: Pretty good hotel... had a 42inch Plasma/LCD TV with HBO, Starz subscriptions. Had a Keurig coffee maker. Good continental breakfast (hashbrowns, biscuits+gravy, scrambled eggs)... and box cereal, yogurt, muffins, etc... enough choices. Wi-Fi was quite good. Bed was good, however wasn't happy with the pillows. The pool was heated and the spa was good... wish we could use it. Receptionists were personable. Could not figure out the jacuzzi tub thingie. Probably the costliest hotel in John Day city, but well worth it. read more

Sink doesn't drain properly, bathtub had hair and tampon applicator in the drain, behind the toilet and corners on bathroom floor were dirty and had pubic hair, tv remote wasn't programmed correctly to work with the tv. For being a Best Western, the staff needs to improve their standards or change the name to Budget Inn and lower the room rate by $100. read more

First of all I must say this is glorified motel. Not sure why Best Western chain signed up this location as their property. Paid almost US190/= one night. Check In took almost 15 minutes. Rooms are ok. Morning breakfast also below par. Price is high-end but dont deliver the value. read more

This is probably the best place to stay in John Day, but that is probably just by default. The rooms are dreary and face the parking lot, and with the bathroom in the back, they feel like English basement apartments (at least the ones on the first floor). The pool is nice. Not a bad value for the middle of Oregon, but not a destination either. read more

I don't think we can say enough good about this hotel. The night shift woman was very friendly and accommodating. Felt welcome right away. We have been traveling for many hours and were ready to relax. Got to our room and was pleasantly surprised on how clean and welcoming it felt. Now we have stayed in lots of hotels and this one gets the blue ribbon. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud and the pillows were the same. The sheets were so soft and the comforter was clean and just the right weight on you to sleep like a baby. We left the housekeepers Tina and Melinda (they left a card) a nice tip. Always tip your housekeepers, they work hard for you. read more

One night was too many at the Best Western John Day Inn. We had a reservation. Upon checkin the young woman at the front desk immediately informed us that they were only cleaning rooms upon request. I reminded her that, per our reservation , we were staying just one night. Little did I know she meant the rooms were not being cleaned. At all. Not between guests checking out and guests checking in. She was busy- having trouble keeping her mask in place and having no pens, sanitized or unsanitized, to complete the registration form, that she failed to clarify their cleaning policy. The policy became self-evident when we arrived at our room to find it unready for occupancy. The beds were made up with what appeared to be unwashed bedding. The tv was not functioning. The toilet seat had feces smeared on it. It was disgusting. We called the desk and a young man came to fix the tv. We asked him to look at the condition of the room and upon observing the bathroom he arranged for a different room for us. The second room was not much better. The tv was, again, not working, but he connected it and left for the front desk, after telling us that this day was his first as a front desk manager. The room smelled of cat urine. One of the beds looked fresh, the other not. The bathroom was dirty and supplies were minimal. We discussed abandoning the room and driving onto another location but were ultimately too weary to continue to safely drive. We had a restless night and headed out early. Checkout was handled by a different manager. She was cheerful, better prepared, and offered us a grab and go breakfast. We took the offered bags, hoping that the John Day Inn would somewhat redeem itself. To the contrary, the contents of the bags proved that their standards are not on par with other BW properties. We will never consider a stay at this Best Western again. It's a sad excuse for a hospitality provider, and far below what Best Western ought to allow for a property wearing the logo. read more

The stars need to be considered in context with what's available here. Wow, it's the largest town in the county and has a whopping 2,000 people in it. My kids' high school is more densely populated. The people at the front desk are friendly, no evidence of any bugs, comfortable if dark (and having the curtains open means anyone can see right in). The fridge is a little scary - I couldn't seem to get it to cool - instead it froze everything solid, including a can of soda (laying on it's side), which, at 4am exploded the fridge door open and projectile-vomited ice, soybeans, fruit bits and whatever else got in the way of the detonation. Jeesh, I thought a bomb had gone off. Can't really fault the hotel for the fact the whole town keeps the hours of your average seven year old, but you need to be sure to buy what you need early in the evening. The Best Western is, by all accounts, a 140 mile round trip to the Painted Hills. The town is quaint and welcoming. The motel was in the process of doing updates and we had to switch rooms. The staff was polite and accommodating. The star of the Best Western in John Day though, has to be Johnny Lane. He's a very polite and attentive employee. He appears to be in charge of the morning's breakfast and was always popping in and out to make sure the guests had what they wanted. My wife, being vegan, asked for soy milk and Mr. Lane had no problems coming up with it. My wife said, "Thank you" to him and his reply was, "I'm blessed." No Mr. Lane, it is my family who was blessed by an employee ANYONE would want to have. Thank you to Mr. Lane for making a memorable trip even more so. read more

Solid, especially for John Day! The bed was so big and comfy, was close to all things, including parks for my dog, and the pool was indoors and cleaner than some I've seen. I would stay here again for sure. Good for visiting John Day, the national monument is fairly far away though so look into that. read more

My father was evacuated from his home by the fire department after a bush fire broke out 2 miles from his home. He is a veteran he is elderly with a very poor heart and dependent on dialysis. He stayed at the best Western John Day and the following day was told that he would have to leave. This when the road was still close to his home and he was a member of the community. He was also in bed getting Manuel dialysis which is necessary for his good health. The hotel first said they had fire people needing the rooms. Then corporate said that wasn't true. Furthermore they hustled my father while he was getting dialysis in his room before checkout time while his caretakers were trying to convince them that for his own well-being and the emergency situation they found themselves in that they needed to keep him there. The manager took it upon herself to go to the room prop open the door and hassle my dad directly. My dad was emotionally drained and his heart is very weak and this was not good and because the manager propped open the door, my father service dog escaped out of the door into an area that she was not familiar with. Two hours later she was luckily found safe after having crossed two major roads. My father's home is still under evacuation orders the road to his home is still blocked and the stress of this event was significant. The best western could not behave in a fashion that served its community a veteran and a very elderly sick gentleman who was escaping from his home. Please do not use this Hotel on principal alone. When disasters happen communities need to pull together. The bottom line for the hotel was money. My father would have paid for his room, his care would have been safer and his stress would have been lower substantially. So please do not stay at this hotel to let them know that in America we take care of people in disaster situations. Just like Kentucky now, just like Hurricane Katrina all those years ago, Americans come together when disaster hits. Show the best western John Day that patriotism is alive and well and they missed the mark. Boycott John de best western read more

Stayed here May 2015. One reviewer called this place "the Ritz of John day". Well he might've made that comment in jest, but I have to agree. It's quite nice. The rooms have Keurig coffee makers, nice big screen TVs, and comfy beds with lots of pillows. The heating / cooling systems were efficient and quiet. But really what makes this place rise above the rest is an incredibly awesome pool and spa, located in a large outbuilding across the parking lot. The front desk staff makes themselves available and I even had the pleasure of them calling me in the afternoon to see if I was a happy camper. My only complaint is according to yelp, this place is listed as a hotel. It's not. It's a motel. read more

If you are in John Day, this is the local Ritz. There's not a lot of choice. Our room was pleasant enough and after some fiddling, I found a decent wireless connection. The jacuzzi tub didn't bubble, but at least it was big and clean. The pool was a bit murky but serviceable. Parking is easy and it's around the corner from the main drag. I'd stay here again. My only words of advice to the owners are: In room 118 where we stayed, there are loud pops that sound like they are coming from the heating system in the walls. We arrived at 3:00pm but were told our room wasn't ready yet. Our room was ready about 30-45 minutes later. Room appeared to be clean until we started looking closely: half-eaten muffin in the desk drawer and funny markings on the ceiling. The breakfast was the usual food selection that's available at most Best Western's. Even though our room was next to the highway, thankfully we didn't hear much traffic noise. The swimming pool had too much chlorine, so much in fact that it was burning the eyes of some people in our group. The "hot" tub water temperature was lukewarm. read more

My boyfriend and I were on day 6 of our 10 day road trip. The night before, we ended up I'm Arco, Idaho because of the Craters of the Moon....well....the WORST HOTEL EVER is in Arco, Idaho. I wasn't happy. It was not a good thing to be furious with the decisions that your man makes while on vacation. I couldn't get away! After I calmed down that day, he promised that we would stay somewhere that would redeem him for the horrible Arco stay. He succeeded. We pulled in around 11pm...the room was soooooooooo clean and pretty. They even put the remote control in a little bag that said something like, "a fresh remote for you." Seemed unnecessary but it made me very happy! The people who worked there were very nice! The bed was so comfy and fresh and clean. Great shower and clean bathroom. Thank goodness for this place and this adorable little town. Enjoy! read more

For being in the small town the price is high. This is a so so room and no frills. The mattress' are about 20 years old. If you have back issues you'll feel it. They should lower the price of the room to adjust to what it is. read more

Not bad & very convenient to walk to local restaurants. Right around the corner from the Kam Wah Chung museum but this museum closes for the year on October 31. This is not very close to the painted Hills as another person pointed out. They are pet friendly and we could bring our dog. read more

It's a very nice property. Rooms are clean and spacious. An unfortunate situation arises from the siting of the smoking area very a close proximity to many rooms. The smokers sit out at all hours and seem to talk loudly while the AC's take in their smoke. Could be corrected by relocating smoking area to a more distant area. read more

I would have given a much better review if not because of the noise from the boiler room downstairs. Who ever designed the hotel has no brain in terms of hotel operation. We stayed at room 208 which was a two rooms suite, there was no air conditioning in the 2nd room so we have to open the window - we then heard the noise throughout the night, it was really annoying. Other than that, it was a quite nice hotel - clean and comfortable, very friendly staff too. If you happen to be in town and would like to stay in this hotel, you better ask the staff for a quiet room. read more

Nothing to write home about. In any major city, I would pay $60 for this room, so the $88 I payed was a little out of control. My toddler opened up the nightstand drawer, and pulled out an old nasty water bottle full of black spit from a guy who chews tobacco. The housecleaning didn't even look in the drawers! We stayed here one night on a motorcycle trip. The other motorcyclist and I agreed there wasn't much this hotel could do to make it better. Location is good, downtown, short walking distance to several eating establishments. Room was clean, beds were comfortable, air-conditioning worked good, cable TV, fast WiFi, Keurig coffee maker, frig and microwave in the room, plenty of towels and soap. Free breakfast was good with full coffee thermoses. We paid $147 with tax for a room with 2 queen beds. There was a large forest fire in the area so rooms were at a premium. We had a downstairs room and parked right outside the room. The hotel also provided old towel rags to clean the bikes. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful. There were 10% off coupons at the front desk for one of the nearby dinner restaurants. We didn't use it but there is a separate building on site with an indoor pool. All good especially compared to some of the other hotels in town. They could use a little touch up paint on the entrance doors and room but that was only thing I could find negative and that was fairly minor. read more

On Sunday June 17th I stayed at your inn. Imagine my delight when at 1 A.M. I received a call from the desk wanting to know if I was hearing any noises in my room. I apologized because I had somehow fallen asleep and was not monitoring the area for unusual noises. I explained I would try to remain more vigilant during my next stay. I felt guilty enough about not fulfilling my responsibilities, I was unable to go back to sleep. The next morning I was discussing your new program with some other guests in the breakfast room. I met a gentleman that said he was the impetus for my wake up call. He explained that he was hearing a banging noise, like a pipe banging and he called the desk to change his room. He received a new key and walked into his new room at 1 A.M. only to find a couple already in the bed. Imagine everyone's surprise! Personally I applaud your, "Get to know your neighbor," program. I just wanted to write and assure you that I will try to remain more vigilant during my next stay so that I can fulfill my responsibilities more appropriately. I was surprised at how quiet the rooms were. A family of four were next door and we couldn't hear a thing between the walls. Only noise is when someone is outside your window. This was a very popular hotel, seemed like it was almost full. Beds were very comfortable. read more
