Such a mix. Great people supporting the event. BUT, the event has gone way down. Down to the point that a repeating pattern has ended and it is doubtful that I will go back one more time HnH100 is challenged to keep registration up, yet, move with the trends. Unfortunately, the event has gone way down over the past decade. It is less safe and nothing has been done to address some very obvious issues!!! Every time I have gone the first major downhill has a major accident. This could be prevented with marshalls and traffic management. The RD ignores and it never changes. About a decade or so ago, more tribikes and road bikes with tribars. Riders ability to control their bike is sufficiently limited in the bars, thus, the reason riding in the bars is not allowed. Well, this rule is NOT enforced on course of after. With all the reports of riders in the bars with pictures validating, none disqualified. Never heard of a warning given. Now, we have eBikes, eTrikes and even some eQuads...some are doubles. These are MOTORIZED. Aren't motorized vehicles banned? Watched a couple of these make radical lane changes and pass w/o calling out. They should NOT be on the course. If the directors have not noticed the number of returning riders is down and, more importantly, the number of two wheel classic riders and returning riders is in steep decline, they are not paying attention. If they cannot or will not associate the safety issues, ebike and tri-bike issues with the decline, they are ignorant. Ignorant means to ignore fact. It's bliss when nothing negative happens and stupid when undesired consequences occur. read more

Nice, easy routes, but expect crowds. Good ride for all ages and abilities. Overall ascent/descent for the 100m is similar to the Katy Flatland Century. Fairly flat. You will climb about 275 feet the first 30 miles, then hit a smooth, downhill for the next 50 miles. At mile 80, you will hit a slow, 100-foot climb until you hit downtown. The 100K route will take you by the Air Force base. Very scenic riding past the planes and cheering military. The 100m route goes through a few small towns. There is an unlisted route of 75 miles if you take the 100m route and go straight at Hell's Gate to the Air Force base. In the 2015 ride, the route after Hell's gate was a bit boring and mostly into the wind. Not as much fun as the first 60/70 miles. Rest stops are well stocked. Too many folks skip the first rest stop to go to the second one, which makes the second rest stop VERY packed with a long porta-potty line. One rest stop had a human bike rack (volunteers holding bikes)...very nice. These volunteers do a great job. This ride is similar to the MS-150 in number of riders, but does a better job at dividing the crowds between various routes. Parking is so easy. There are plenty of open lots just a few blocks from the start. We arrived 25 minutes prior to the start and had plenty of time to get a good starting spot. Similar to the MS150, the first 5-10 miles suck as you dodge slow riders riding on the left side. There were a few spots where I had to ride in the opposite lane, which is not good from a safety standpoint. Overall, though, riders are very friendly. HH100 does the timing chips in the crappy front number plates that Marathon Photos uses. I wrapped mine around the bike stem and was able to still get my time on the website. Others in my party packed timing chip plates in their jersey pockets, but it appears their times did not register. Yes, it is true that whatever you drink at Wichita Falls was probably once sewer water (literally), but they do claim to have a superior water rating for their recycling/filtration process. Hotter N'Hell is an event for the cycling enthusiast with tons of other bike crazy people to hang out with. You can be in the mix with up to 14,000 other people at the starting line, which goes on for blocks and blocks. They have many different routes to chose from.... you don't have to do 100 miles! The weather can be hot - over 100, humid, windy, rain... the even goes on no matter what! But you can chose from the 10, 25, 40, 60 and 100 mile routes. I did the 100 mile routes in 2012 and 2013. I'll be doing a 60 mile womens race for 2014. The have race events for women and men that are not connected to the regular event. This event is like a right of passage for people who want to ride in one of the most attended events in the country. People partake from all over the world! There is a rest stop, often with cool themes, ever 10 miles to enjoy. Sometimes you ride with your friends, but if you go alone you may make friends for life! The event is so big that all of the hotels are fully booked each year and the people of Wichita Falls open their homes to strangers for an overnight place to stay. I stay with a host family that has me back each year and it's been so much fun spending time with them. I highly recommend this event! read more

HotterN Hell Hundred - Races & Competitions Near Me - Wichita Falls, Texas

I saw the Devil and passed through Hell's Gate to tell this tale of a century bike ride that is said to be hotter than the flames of hell itself. So what's up with the name. Apparently the race was first held in 1982 as part of the Wichita Falls Centennial Celebration. The name is thus a rare example of a triple entendre: one hundred miles (i.e., century) in one hundred degree Fahrenheit weather (the race is held in August, usually the hottest month of the year in Wichita Falls), initially conducted to celebrate the city's 100th anniversary. It occurs from Friday to Sunday and activities includes criterion cycling races, a century (100mile) bike ride, a mountain bike race and a trail half marathon. Cyclist from all over the US and other foreign countries will come here for this. I decided to take part in this event since I wanted to do something impressive after I recovered from injuries that prevented me from running or cycling for about a month. I thought it would be good practice for Ironman Texas as well. I took a rode trip to drive there and paid the late registration fee of $40 dollars for the century bike ride and a $30 dollar fee for the half marathon trail run. The cool thing about the ride is that they will allow you to camp out near the expo center which I took advantage of since I enjoy using my tent whenever I can. Sure, you could get a hotel room or bring an RV but where's the fun in that. This review is more for the bike ride portion and the half marathon portion. Even though the main attraction of the ride is the 100mile course, there are options to do shorter distances. But really, I had to ride the 100miles. It doesn't sound impressive when you tell people that you went to the event and rode only 80 miles or less. Bike ride started pretty quickly with a mass start rather than wave so it was pretty crowded in the beginning. I remember seeing massive bike wrecks out there that I was fortunate to not be a part of. There were plenty of rest stops throughout the course but I would skip several because I wanted to make the time limit for when the 100mile course would be open. They referred to this point as hells gate and there was a guy dressed as a devil cheering the cyclists through. After a passed through hell's gate, I made every rest stop afterwards since I was really hot out there. Eventually I got the finish line and they had one of the fire hydrants releasing water in the air to cool every one down. The one thing that I didn't like was that they offered you a cup of soda afterwards. There were various food booths around as well but you had to pay for these. The following morning was the half marathon trail run. I thought I knew what trail runs were like but this was something else. This was the same course the mountain bikes used for their bike ride a few days ago and it seemed to be more of an obstacle course as there are swinging bridges and walls of dirt that you have to climb over. read more

One of the biggest rides in the country. Very well staffed. Rest stops are very well stocked with all the essentials. 100 mile ride is nice but a lot of the roads are rough chip seal. Be prepared for hot and windy conditions. Somewhere around mile 80 it feels like someone is holding a hair dryer in front of your face. In fact is so hot that this is the only ride I know of where there's a rest stop 5 miles from the Finish. The trail run the next day is also very nice. There's a water stop every couple of miles. The trails are nice and challenging with several short Steep inclines and descents. One of the better trails that I've been on. read more
