Wow the new owners have really turned this place around. Such a convenient location right on the doorsteps of SLU's campus.

There's more than meets the eye with this establishment. When I first researched But First, YOU…read moreLLC, I was looking at their therapy services. I then discovered that they offer so much more! But First, YOU identifies as a Family Wellness Boutique, and the name couldn't be more fitting. The owner has a PhD in Medical Family Therapy and offers mental and physical health services to adults, children, couples, and families. The mental health services of course include therapy. She then goes even further by offering fitness classes (she's also a coach!) such as spin and dance. Recently, she added infrared sauna therapy. Oh, and there's Reiki therapy healing too! As if that wasn't enough, she's also a doula and offers those services. Whew! I don't know when she sleeps! So far, I've tried the infrared sauna therapy, a spin class, and a dance class. SPIN CLASS - Oh my goodness! This was a major workout! I took a class that was taught/led by the owner. It was a Hip Hop Spin Class, and she had one of the BADDEST (as in awesome) mix-tape tapes I've ever heard. The tracks spanned from NWA to Meg Thee Stallion. It was HYPE! The instructor kept us motivated with her high energy and positive reinforcements. I love the way she incorporated cool downs after a few minutes of HIIT. She added some off-the-bike core work in there too. And she even has selfie stick stands for you to prop your phone and record your workout. She thought of everything! Again, GREAT workout! 10/10 would recommend. The ONLY downside is that spin class availability is limited to either 530am or 530pm, which I'm sure is perfect for the majority of the world who have a normal 9a-5p work schedule. INFRARED SAUNA THERAPY - Think hot box. You sit inside the sauna box (bigger than a phone booth; smaller than a bath house/ steam room), dressed to your comfort level and sweat away stress and water weight. It was a serene experience. The area felt like a spa room. There were candles, cucumber infused water, light snacks, fresh fruit, aromatherapy lotions, and music. I was even able to take a moment to meditate post the sauna therapy session. It was extremely relaxing and therapeutic. 10/10 would recommend. The prices were very reasonable for spin class and sauna therapy. I will definitely go back for more of each. Multi-class passes and monthly memberships are available for the spin classes. All of that information is on their website.

Typically, when you're considering joining, you're offered a free introductory class. My first interaction with the front desk was positive, but after that, my experience gradually declined. During my first class, Elena was the instructor. Another new member and I were both first-timers and had stations right next to each other. Elena checked on the other participant multiple times throughout the class but only checked on me at the very end. It felt odd, but I initially brushed it off. On another occasion, I arrived about six minutes late due to rushing. A staff member informed me of the five-minute late policy but still allowed me to join the class, which I appreciated. Parking at this location is also extremely limited, which adds to the overall frustration. One day I forgot my heart rate monitor. Zach and another front desk staff member were present when I asked about it. The other staff member was understanding, but Zach insisted on charging the $10 fee. I've been to another Orangetheory location where a member forgot theirs and was not charged, so the inconsistency stood out to me. This past Thursday, after attending for a couple of weeks, I had an instructor (I believe her name was Beth) who was the first person to actually correct my rowing form and give me helpful pointers. That was appreciated, but it made me realize how little guidance I had received prior. Overall, the experience has left me feeling uncomfortable. As a Black woman, I don't feel particularly welcomed or supported at this location. When I attended Orangetheory in Frontenac, the experience was completely different the energy, the atmosphere, and the overall vibe felt inclusive and encouraging. Although I live very close to the CWE location, I'm strongly considering switching to the Frontenac studio. I love working out, but I don't appreciate or feel okay with how this location has made me feel.

This place is freaking HUGE and has SO MUCH EQUIPMENT. They have plenty of treadmills in multiple locations (you're nervous about being in the open? No problem they have some in a back room), but I'm more into weights - I love that they have every type of weight to choose from, plenty of racks, AND they have so many individual pieces of equipment. Sometimes free weights/racks make me nervous, so having individual machines is freaking awesome and the ease of use is so much better. They have multiple spaces, including a back room that is pretty secluded which is perfect for new people/for stretching. They also have balls, steps, small weights, etc back there. They truly are an all encompassing gym. My only complaint (some people don't care about this) - it is very overwhelming for women AND for those of us that aren't SUPER fit. I will not come in here without my fiancé because I'm too nervous haha! It's....a lot. There's a lot of really fit people and coming from a small planet fitness, this is a lot to take in. Overall, great location. The equipment seems to be kept up nicely, and there's something for everyone.

This studio…read moregives you that warm fuzzy 'local community' vibe (they even sell local artist goods in the lobby if you're interested in a 'one of a kind' statement necklace)! The classes are offered in a beautiful brick building (wood floors, big windows) on what I would consider the 'Main Street' of Lafayette Square. Plenty of parking in front of the studio or nearby. You have to travel through a small alley to get to the door (which is quite romantic... you can smell incense burning as you approach the studio's entrance). All of the instructors are friendly, helpful, and set a good pace for class. A couple of my friends enjoyed their experience with the studio so much they decided to complete the 'teacher training'! It's been fun to attend classes they host now to see how much their practice has developed!

If you're even questioning if you should drop in to a class at Southtown Yoga, the answer is YES…read more Beginner or advanced, ST Yoga gives a full yoga workout that will not only stretch you and relax you, but you'll also feel the burn. This week I went to a hot yoga class with my husband and his niece (she's a regular here) and although I've done regular yoga, glow yoga, aerial yoga, and yoga on the rocks, I had never done hot yoga so I was game. And I also hadn't done any form of yoga in quite a few months so I was a little weary since it wasn't clear what the ideal experience level was. We signed up online which makes the process quicker since you don't have to fill out any paperwork when you arrive. As soon as we got there we jumped in line, paid for our class ($7 cash/$10 card), kicked our shoes off, and found a space. The class filled up quickly so I'm willing to bet, late arrivals won't get in... which isn't a bad thing. I absolutely loved the studio we were in. The windows look out to Park Ave, but they do have a screen that blocks the sun from beaming down on you (I mean you're already going to be hot enough... you don't need the extra help). I like the whole design of ST Yoga in general. They updated just enough to make it comfortable like the nice finished bathrooms and changing areas, but they left a lot of the original features in tact like the wood floors and the large pane windows. What I love the most is that you enter ST Yoga through the back which takes you through this cute bricked alleyway... it truly feels like a secret that you're being let in on. So hot yoga. It was fast paced and hot. It was clear that it was going to be hot-hot and not just luke warm as soon as we walked in. I didn't mind it, but you'd be crazy if you didn't bring a water bottle (or two) with you. There is no pressure to push your body past it's limits, but more so to listen to your body and know when you can challenge yourself. And any reservations I had about going to a class that could potentially be an advanced class were washed away when I realized any advanced moves instructions were accompanied by instructions for modifications. 100% recommend! This was a fantastic workout that was both challenging and meditative. All of the staff was helpful and welcoming. Oh and they start off their Om's with this little accordion type instrument (different than any studio I've been to, but everyone was on the same key so it sounded beautiful). ST Yoga is a great place for any level yogi and they offer a range of different classes along with some pop up events so you can really find your niche at this studio.
