If you're looking for an ultra chic, modern, pretentious studio... look elsewhere! This studio gives you that warm fuzzy 'local community' vibe (they even sell local artist goods in the lobby if you're interested in a 'one of a kind' statement necklace)! The classes are offered in a beautiful brick building (wood floors, big windows) on what I would consider the 'Main Street' of Lafayette Square. Plenty of parking in front of the studio or nearby. You have to travel through a small alley to get to the door (which is quite romantic... you can smell incense burning as you approach the studio's entrance). All of the instructors are friendly, helpful, and set a good pace for class. A couple of my friends enjoyed their experience with the studio so much they decided to complete the 'teacher training'! If you're even questioning if you should drop in to a class at Southtown Yoga, the answer is YES. Beginner or advanced, ST Yoga gives a full yoga workout that will not only stretch you and relax you, but you'll also feel the burn. This week I went to a hot yoga class with my husband and his niece (she's a regular here) and although I've done regular yoga, glow yoga, aerial yoga, and yoga on the rocks, I had never done hot yoga so I was game. And I also hadn't done any form of yoga in quite a few months so I was a little weary since it wasn't clear what the ideal experience level was. We signed up online which makes the process quicker since you don't have to fill out any paperwork when you arrive. As soon as we got there we jumped in line, paid for our class ($7 cash/$10 card), kicked our shoes off, and found a space. The class filled up quickly so I'm willing to bet, late arrivals won't get in... which isn't a bad thing. I absolutely loved the studio we were in. The windows look out to Park Ave, but they do have a screen that blocks the sun from beaming down on you (I mean you're already going to be hot enough... you don't need the extra help). I like the whole design of ST Yoga in general. They updated just enough to make it comfortable like the nice finished bathrooms and changing areas, but they left a lot of the original features in tact like the wood floors and the large pane windows. What I love the most is that you enter ST Yoga through the back which takes you through this cute bricked alleyway... it truly feels like a secret that you're being let in on. So hot yoga. It was fast paced and hot. It was clear that it was going to be hot-hot and not just luke warm as soon as we walked in. I didn't mind it, but you'd be crazy if you didn't bring a water bottle (or two) with you. There is no pressure to push your body past it's limits, but more so to listen to your body and know when you can challenge yourself. And any reservations I had about going to a class that could potentially be an advanced class were washed away when I realized any advanced moves instructions were accompanied by instructions for modifications. 100% recommend! This was a fantastic workout that was both challenging and meditative. All of the staff was helpful and welcoming. Oh and they start off their Om's with this little accordion type instrument (different than any studio I've been to, but everyone was on the same key so it sounded beautiful). ST Yoga is a great place for any level yogi and they offer a range of different classes along with some pop up events so you can really find your niche at this studio. read more

This is the only yoga studio I've ever visited. It's where I learned yoga. I recommend the Yoga Basics class to all those interested in yoga. It's a smaller class and you may get a bit of one-on-one. The door to Southtown is hidden away on the side of the building. Inside, the lighting is perfectly low. The instructors are good. Prices could be better -- it's either $10 for yoga hour; $15 for beginner and other classes -- in cash. To run a card, it's another $3. I don't know how this compares with other yoga studios, but seems steep to me. They have a membership for $95 a month. read more

This is my neighborhood yoga studio. I recently started going and am so glad I did! It's clean. It's got a great vibe. Very friendly staff. I love Candice and Connie. There are showers! I love the wide array of class times. I can see why yogahour isn't for everyone depending on what kind of practice you want... But for me I think it's awesome. I love the upbeat, quick progression and options to make it as challenging or modified as I need. I'm not worried about the class being to simple or to advanced. I have a ton of fun and feel like I've had a great hour recentering and getting stronger. I like practicing in a warm room and sweating. Can't beat $7 . I landed in St. Louis in the afternoon, scoped out yoga studios, and rushed over to catch a 5:30 class at Southtown Yoga. I didn't know anything about the yogahour class format, and to be honest, I might not have gone to the class if I had known - it's a little less flowy than I normally like to practice. BUT. Roxy, the teacher was so warm, passionate, clear and invested in our experience as students, that she was able to make me feel relaxed and skillfully guided in a practice that, under a less-skillful and passionate teacher, I might not have liked. I also appreciated the beautiful space and the super friendly people that came to class. It's clear that they've got a good community here, and I was blessed to be a visitor. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town. read more

I have grown so attached to this studio, it's ridiculous (I know, I know, so not yogi of me). I don't even like the idea of leaving town for extended periods anymore because I know I'll miss it while I'm away. INSTRUCTORS The instructors here are amazing; they are definitely the best feature of Southtown. They are knowledgeable about modifications and giving the appropriate adjustments. I've always gotten thorough and insightful advice whenever I ask questions after class, and they're just in general kind and pleasant people. The instructors all have their own teaching style and preferences, so I recommend sampling many of them. I usually prefer Connie for the challenge and her unique sequencing and Brigette for her clear and precise instruction. CLASSES The foundational class offerings are Basics, Yogahour and Expanding. As the instructors describe it, the patented Yogahour series they teach here aims to be more "badass than bendy," and it's definitely one of the more athletic yoga styles I've practiced, though often less "flowy." They warm the studio up to 80 degrees, so it gets a little drippy in there, but the heat will help you access the stretch. Yogahour is an all-levels class, so they teach the more advanced poses in stages, offering different stopping points along the way for students to work at their own level. I've only taken one Basics class here, but I remarked that it also emphasized strength and was more flowing than the basics classes I've taken elsewhere. I find that there's quite a jump between Yogahour and Radical -- as in the other classes, you always have the option to stop where you feel comfortable, but expect to work on inversions, deep, deep backbends like kapotasana and challenging standing balancing sequences. PRICES The Yogahour classes are only $7 a drop in -- yes, $7!! -- and they constantly run various deals and promotions, like the Yogahour summer pass they did this year (3 months of unlimited Yogahour for $189). Basics, Expanding and Radical are $12. I love that classes are scheduled throughout the day (6:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.), but wish they had more on the weekends. The studio is generally cash-only for drop-ins ($1 additional charge for credit card use). STUDIO The studio itself a beautiful space. The large main room fits up to 60 people and has a wall of windows facing Park Ave, so it's usually wonderfully lit with natural light. The other room is smaller, fitting closer to 20 people, and has an exposed brick interior. I like the smaller room for its intimate atmosphere and attention you get with a smaller group in a smaller space. They also have a few changing rooms, two showers, cubbies for personal effects and a retail area that carries Manduka products, books and athletic gear. They also do free mat rentals (although I highly encourage you to bring your own because the ones at the studio are a bit stretchy and slippery ... and stinky at times) and $2 towel rentals. COMMUNITY How could I wrap up a review about a yoga studio without commenting on community? The students have a big voice in the studio; Brigette is great about taking their input when it comes to changes to the schedule and programming. They also regularly host well-known yoga teachers to guest teach for weekend workshops and have various other interesting events throughout the year. Come for just a few classes, and you'll start seeing familiar faces, because the people who come here tend to get hooked on it. read more

I had one OK experience out of numerous times visiting Southtown Yoga. Their secondary (tiny yoga room) is very awkward and is NOT recommended for any yoga class. I felt uncomfortable and ran into everyone around me. I have never seen yoga done while facing classmates. It was a really weird, unpleasant experience. With another visit, the large room was way too hot (this was not a bikram class). On that note, I heard someone had to be taken to the hospital recently due to how warm the temperature was in that room. The person had passed out! On a positive note, the restorative class was good. Joy of Yoga is my recommendation for a great yoga studio in STL. Joy is great and gave me lots of knowledge. Joy made me feel welcome to her studio. Southtown feels like a cash grab. read more

After many years and a few pounds since I last practiced yoga I have been a little timid about returning to the practice. The Groupon served as a lighthouse showing the way during a stormy night at sea. Most of my fears and trepidation vanished when I was welcomed with great hospitality and kindness. Although my body doesn't always want to do everything it once did, I have once again fallen in love with yoga thanks to Southtown Yoga. Even if you have never taken yoga before the yogis will make you feel comfortable and teach you proper form. Even in large classes the instructors go out of their way to learn your name to encourage and gently guide you through the class. Southtown yoga is neither stuffy nor pretentious. The instructors are very knowledgeable but laid back. No one takes themselves too seriously. Classes are fun and challenging. I generally leave with a yoga buzz. Check it out! read more

Southtown moved to their new studio shortly before Thanksgiving this year ]] I've been impatiently awaiting Southtown Yoga' Park Ave grand opening since I moved to St. Louis in August. I live just a few blocks down the street and have been looking forward to being able to walk to yoga classes regularly. I'm so glad I waited and didn't start going to another studio farther away, because this place is pretty dang awesome. Since they opened here, I've been to 3 classes - 2 yogahours (with Bridgett Niedringhaus and Connie Werner) and 1 basics class (with Lena Dolter). New pricing is $7 for a yogahour class and $12 for basics or expanding classes. I LOVE the yogahour classes because you really feel like you get a good workout out of it - it is relatively fast-paced and you will move through various poses fairly quickly. The Basics class is slower-paced and is great for continuing to build your practice. I'd recommend attending a mixture of both yogahour and Basics (or Expanding, if you're at that level) classes. The instructors are amazing and pay good attention to your form and will help you make adjustments as needed. Southtown seems to keep their studio a lot warmer than other yoga studios that I have been to, so I highly recommend bringing a towel and water bottle to keep by your mat. Other things of note: - The studio doesn't have mirrors on the walls, which is one thing I'd prefer so I can watch my own poses and peek at others + the instructor while I'm in a pose and can't see the front - There are two rooms in the new studio - one large room that has windows opening to Park Ave, and a smaller room in the back. I have gone here the last two weeks for the $7 Wednesday night Yoga Hour and LOVE IT. I had never done Yoga before and didn't feel as though the class was too advanced for a beginner (and it was definitely a good workout). I like that the instructors give different level options for different skill sets and never make me feel stupid for being a novice. Everyone here has been very friendly so far and I will continue to keep coming back! Side note: To get inside, there is a side entrance. I have been to a couple different studios in St.Louis and this one is by far the best. On a college budget, $20 a class doesn't always work for me (other studios prices). I went for the first time to yoga hour last night. 7 dollars, with a price like that I can afford to go multiple times a week! The studio' slighting was great; warm and inviting. There's plenty of cubby space and it's all extremely clean. The class itself and the instructor were fantastic. I had been traveling since before and after Christmas and had not had much time to commit to my practice. This first class back pushed me farther than I thought I was capable. I don't think I've been this sore in awhile, but also never so motivated to come back. I cannot wait to come back after my next trip and make coming a routine during the school year. read more

I'm so glad my friend Andrew told me about this place. I didn't think I could replace my current crush on my yoga teacher back in LA, but this place proved me wrong. I've recently started to frequent the studios of Southtown Yoga and I am so impressed by the truly communal feel that STY displays to those who walk through their secret alleyway, under their beautifully simple strings of lights, and in through their door. Each time I come in I've been greeted with a big smile which, while a small gesture, never ceases to make my day! The instructors here go out of their way to remember your name and make you feel welcome; something that I've truly appreciated. The Yoga Hour classes (the only ones that I've attended thus far) are pretty quick-paced, but each session is challenging and encouraging in its own way, with personal flare truly being added by each instructor. I came to STY drawn by their Bender deal at the start of the New Year ($30 for 1 month of 1 class per day--a truly wonderful way to start 2014!) and now I'm hooked! I really hope to practice at STY as long as I'm living in the STL area. Additionally, while it gets a little steamy/sweaty, I love how they will pack everyone in like sardines and how the idea that "there is always room for one mat" is practiced on a regular basis here; if that doesn't encourage you to come practice, I'm not sure what does! :) read more

I attended a class here earlier this week. I had never tried a YogaHour class, so I was not sure what to expect, and it was NOT to my taste. I think I will give this place another try for a basics class, since the studio was well-kept and it also has a class schedule that intersects well with the corporate work schedule. They prefer cash, but can process credit cards for a $1 fee, which is worth it to the person who never carries cash (me!) The prices are comparable to what I have found in other cities, and most of the classes are full hour. The studio is in a store front, so we could hear the buses going past outside while we were practicing. It was a little distracting, but didn't negate the benefits of the practice. Also, I was glad I arrived as a class was letting out. It made it easier to find the entrance to the lobby area. The studio is at the front, and the lobby area is around the back, meaning you have to walk down an alleyway to a courtyard. It is a private alley, so there wasn't any concern about safety while coming and going, but it was a bit confusing at first. I would have liked to know about parking before I went as well, so here's the details: street parking is ample in the area, and I had no issues finding a space on Monday evening. This place is amazing. It's very close to my house and convenient when I'm wanting to de-stress after a work day or just to go on my day off. I haven't been in a while, but I used to be a regular and this place inspires me to have a fitness regimen! The studio itself is beautiful and well-lit. I haven't gone to a class where I didn't like the teacher. All of the teachers are very pleasant and wonderful and like getting to know you. Yogahour is a great way to stay in shape, and my personal favorite. I am always challenging myself with the poses and I learn more and more with every class. Best yoga studio, hands down! The schedule is great, you can usually find a time to squeeze in an hour of yoga due to their amount of classes every day. The prices are also very reasonable for a drop-in. I took my first ever yoga class today and it was great. I told the instructor it was my first and that I had some back and knee issues. She was very good, explained each position, gave me holding blocks and pillows to use and when demonstrating, did so with my limitations in mind. It was a begginers class for 1 hour and at $12, very reasonable. I can't wait until my second session next saturday. The facility is very relaxing, beautiful hardwood floors, storage bins for your belongings with 2 showers, 2 changing rooms and 2 bathrooms. I've had my eye on this place for awhile and finally made it over there since it's so close to my job. The space is fantastic. Beautiful wood flooring, lots of natural lighting and plenty of space. It felt very "zen" without being intimidating or overly meditative. It's only $7 for a walk-in class, which is awesome for those people that don't want to commit to a membership fee or an unlimited class pass. The only thing I would say to be aware of is that people tend the hang out in the "lobby" in between classes, before or after and it can get loud to the point where it disturbs the other classes going on. Southtown Yoga is a very solid studio. I've only been for a couple of classes, but I really liked the instructors (Denise and Bridgette so far). The studio is quaint; in a central location for southsiders, and easy to get to on Kingshighway. Inside, the walls are exposed brick, which lends a warming quality to the hardwood floors. Instruction for the open level class was just that: there were people of different levels in the class, and I enjoyed that there wasn't an obscenely large number of students (myself included there were only six of us). The studio incorporates some yogic philosophy, but is not overbearing with it. There is some chanting for the initial and final meditations, but I rather like it. Participation is of course, optional. I would certainly recommend this studio to people of the Tower Grove area who want a reliable studio, and great yoga community. The owner has also opened up the Southtown website to include a sort of "online yoga community" where there are postings on workshops, health-related stuff, and yogic philosophy. I took my first ever yoga class at Southtown (and second yoga class ever) this week. I'm a newbie to both fitness classes AND yoga, and I was a little worried I was going to be surrounded entirely by yoga pros at the 6:15am yogaHOUR class. But I'm happy to say it was a great experience! The instructor Courtney was super friendly at the door and explained where everything was and the class was a great pace for a beginner. It was easy to look at other people and figure out what to do. There were some definite pros in the class, but I didn't feel like an outsider being a newb. I am sooo happy I purchased this Groupon, otherwise I doubt I would have tried yoga. Yoga classes can be pricey, which is why I've always resorted to doing stretches while folding laundry, or attempted a grueling workout at home, with work papers piled up around me and my dog constantly interfering because he wants to know why I'm bending and twisting on the living room floor. Yoga classes at Southtown (with or without a Groupon) is money well spent. I've been to four beginner classes and I've had four different instructors. Each instructor is well-trained and pleasant to listen to, and each really knows how to keep you engaged, kick your butt, and help you find an inner peace. I love Southtown Yoga! I started coming here for the Sunday morning prenatal yoga classes with Candace and will definitely be returning for their regular classes after baby is born. The studio is beautiful and the classes are challenging but very relaxing. Candace gives lots of helpful tips for making the poses do the most for your body. Her advice is always useful and never vague or overwhelming. She clearly has a passion for yoga and mindfulness which makes you enthusiastic about classes. Also, I really appreciate how affordable the studio is. I looked around for prenatal classes and was surprised that many other studios charged $18-20/class. I can't afford that. If you'd met me about 7 years ago, I'd have probably scoffed at the idea of doing yoga. To me it was just an extension of gentle stretching exercises for ageing hippies with bad knees, or for the cult-y sorts with severe anxiety issues. And when I did attempt to give yoga a shot, I found myself getting lost in studios that reeked of pseudo spiritual mysticism that did more to distract rather than help me build an actual practice. I'm far from any of those stereotypes, and yoga is far from what I had presumed it to be. And to prove this point is Southtown Yoga, a studio without all those crazy bells and whistles, but with a solid focus on building a community for Vinyasa style yoga, which the lucky folks in St. Louis have access to. I was in St. Louis for the weekend and stopped by this studio in Lafayette Square for a couple of classes and with the ulterior motive of introducing my younger brother to try out some Yoga. The "Expanding" class with Erin was fantastic and I was sold! This one is better suited for someone who's been practicing for a while, but it's not so complicated or overwhelming that anyone who has some introduction to yoga would feel intimidated. Besides, Erin's friendly demeanor and straight forward instruction style makes it a whole lot easier to understand what's going on. My second class which was the "Yoga Hour" with Candace was very different from what I normally go for, but I thoroughly enjoyed it none the less. It's hard to classify what it is, but in my opinion, this would be a thug version of yoga, which requires an equal amount of strength and flexibility and is set to a super groovy play list. If you're a gym-junkie (like my brother who I finally convinced into trying it out) you'd probably enjoy this more because there's a ton of planks, push ups, lunges and that sort of stuff. Southtown's drop in class prices are very reasonable ranging from $7 - $12 and they do have mat and towel rentals like most other studios. The studio is so spacious and has a calming, welcoming energy and a ton of natural light making it a beautiful space to practice in. Plus, they have what counts the most - damn good yoga classes and I know I'll be stopping by the next time I visit. PS. - DC yogis, Bridgette (who owns this place) will be training folks at Capitol Hill yoga soon. YogaHour! 7$ drop in and usually there is a class every evening. This is a class where you will WORK! You will get a good stretch and sweat in. (warm room) I love this place.. Recovering from back problems I am not very flexible or experienced in yoga, however the instructors guide you to do what's right for your body. This place really inspired my yoga love! I have been practicing yoga off and on for many years, but regularly for the last three years in the midwest. Southtown is about as good as it gets. Their owner, like many of their teachers is an active yogi with years of experience teaching and a variety of training. The things I look for in a yoga studio are exactly what Southtown embodies: 1) A causal atmosphere 2) An absence of judgement as to styles of practice, lifestyles, and body types 3) Clear and simple instruction 4) A studied understanding of the all the elements of a pose, it's purpose in the flow, and it's effect on the physical body with an ability to offer a variety of modifications. 5) A focus on joy and community rather than competition and judgement. I was wary to try yoga. I didn't think it would be for me, but after attending a few classes at Southtown I was hooked. As someone who had never done yoga before I felt safe and comfortable in the basics classes. I got to learn the form of the poses without too many confusing directions and yoga lingo. The yogi's there made me feel welcome and I started to feel like a cherished member of the community there, which is another thing that kept me coming back. The teachers made a point to learn my name, and as I developed my practice they were there to help me with tweaks or explain poses and help me with injuries. The teachers are nice and relatable, even for me, someone who walked in with no experience or real "yoga clothes". Now, I've developed a steady practice that I can't do without. Southtown introduced me to yoga and the teachers there created a safe and fun environment that kept me coming back. Southtown is working to bring an awesome community to the Saint Louis area, that can only get better with their move to Lafayette Square. If I could only use one word to describe this studio it would be "community". Honestly, this studio and the community of people who practice there helped me to love Saint Louis again. From the teachers to the students this place is full of welcoming, kind-hearted people who want the best for each other. This is the main reason I fell in love with the place but there are so many other aspects that make it my most favorite yoga studio in the world! 1: The owner. She wants people to feel welcomed and wants to share yoga with anyone and everyone! It is a personal mission and a way of life for her. I think this is most evidenced by her efforts to expand the studio so that she could offer cheaper prices so more people could come and practice. 2: The instructors. They are all well trained in the same program. They know how to sequence classes, adjust people (both physically and verbally), and connect the physical practice with the mental practice. You know you will get quality instruction. There is not one class I would not attend. 3: The atmosphere. It is welcoming and comfortable for anyone no matter what their ability! Everyone is welcome here! This is refreshing both as a newcomer and as a seasoned yogi. I cannot say enough good things about this place and the people here. I've been practicing at Southtown since January, and finally bought an "unlimited" pass this month. I love it!! The atmosphere is very cozy-- exposed brick, hardwood floors, occasionally some incense burning, and almost always a fresh bouquet of flowers. I mainly go to morning classes, and rarely are they very full-- tops 10 people, but usually around 5 or 6. The instructors are great-- very attuned to the correct alignment for each posture, and each student gets individual attention. They're excellent in terms of making sure everyone practices safely, to their personal edge. Every instructor I've had has been laid-back and very friendly, and they even knew my name after the first class! I've tried a few other studios where the yogic philosophy was more in-your-face... not so at Southtown. They do incorporate certain elements associated with the philosophical side of yoga (chanting, meditation, setting an intention for your practice), but the focus is more on helping each student to find their own purpose in the physical practice, whether it's purely to work up a sweat or to find your spiritual center. It's a bit pricier than other places, but I decided it was well worth it :) read more

As part of my journey to wellness my strength training coach recommended yoga to offset my aging body, to allow myself more time to heal. As a man yoga can seem intimidating, shake that non sense if you want good health an exceptional conditioning. Kaylee facilitated the class, she was descript, clearly knowledgable and thoughtful to remind me/us not to over exert ourselves!
