One of the most amazing hidden gems of the south. Wonderful history starting from when the first building was constructed in 1771 sitting on the Mississippi River. Teddy Roosevelt stayed here in 1903. Several movies were also filmed here. The Carriage House Restaurant have an incredible selection of food, reasonably priced. I had the Wedge Salad, Lasagne and Bread Pudding. Great presentation and flavor. A nice choice of tours. Check out the gardens!!

We rode our motorcycles here from Raleigh, NC and were hoping to see the Great River Road Museum. I had no idea about the Houmas House or Gardens before we arrived. I will say that it looked amazingly beautiful but we had complete sticker shock! The house tour was $35, the GRR Museum was $25 and the gardens were $20. Combos were $55. We would have liked to have just walked around for 45 minutes to an hour at most and moved on down the road, we were on a 3600 mile trip and couldn't spend the six hours recommended for the house and garden tour. $110 for two people for an hour is a bit much...we also thought about getting breakfast at the buffet which was $20/each but decided to just get back on the road. We did enjoy what we could see from the parking lot and the ticket booth area. We came across a lot of beautiful gardens on our trips and museums, most were free or had a suggested donation. This was the most expensive spot in 11 states! I'm not sure I'd give this place a stop or second chance if I was ever back in the area.

This place is amazing. Everyone in the world should visit this plantation. It was magical beautiful five star restaurant and bar. The grounds were spectacular. The house was spectacular. The owner was amazing to meet. He let us take a picture with him. I could not recommend this place more.the best harvest host we had ever stayed at

Spent a couple days here to attend a weeding and enjoyed the grounds, restaurants, and River Road. Very unique lodging. Great place to host a small or larger event. Dixie restaurant open for breakfast buffet that is 5 star and lunch. Carriage house restaurant is a fancy or fancy casual and food is very good. Bar is very unique. Historic property from early 1800s. It has a museum but we didn't get time to visit. Lodging is small connected houses approximately one hundred meters from the restaurants and museum. Very nicely appointed and comfortable. Not inexpensive at about $350 per night. Riverboats dock here on Friday and Sunday.

The grounds and venue are incredibly beautiful. Many of the reviews speak to this, and it is absolutely true. I attended an event here that was lovely from an event standpoint, the staff was phenomenal, and the food was excellent. The museum shop, at face value, is also lovely. However, there is the huge and inexcusable issue with the venue not adequately addressing the issue of slavery. This particular plantation had more slaves than any other plantation in the area. The only acknowledgment of this on their website is a reference to that number of slaves as part of property that was passed on in some historical summary. There is no acknowledgment of the damage this plantation caused, the work that needs to be done in reparation of this, or whether any work at all, is being done in reparation of this. I tried to keep an open mind going in, hoping that when I arrived, it would be clear that the current owners and management were taking responsibility for the legacy they carry. However, there was absolutely none of this and for me that's completely inexcusable. So yes, lovely venue. However, completely missing the essential cultural responsibility, acknowledgment, and reparation. Responses to other reviews on Yelp reference this discussion happening in the museum. However, I looked for information about this on their website, and there was nothing. I also looked around while I was there, and it was not apparent. So having alleged conversations taking place in spaces that are not advertised or promoted online or in person to visit visiting guests does no good. Management needs to take responsibility and make sure that this conversation is also put front and center. Because if the conversation is actively hidden, which is what happens when you are not actively promoting it, then it might as well not be happening.

We went last Saturday for a birthday party. Absolutely beautiful! We had an incredible tuna tartare as a starter, then the chicken with rosemary sauce, it was delicious, I wish it had more sauce because it was absolutely exquisite. My husband ordered a red velvet cheesecake and he said it was very good. This place is a gem! Best service, great food and amazing environment.

So nice to find a fully accessible wheelchair tourist place. Beautifully landscaped and the employees were so accommodating. We ate at the buffet which was a beautiful setting with the employees being helpful and accommodating. We did not do the house tour cause I did not think my mom could do the time but I was told it was handicapped accessible with elevator. With our meal purchase we were able to tour the grounds free which was perfect for my mom. The ladies in the gift shop were very nice and helpful. I fully recommend a visit. Worth the time to stop and enjoy. Thank you to everyone at Houmas.

Houmas House is definitely worth the visit. The grounds are beautiful and equally as impressive as the house. All of the employees ... from the grounds people to the housekeepers and restaurant staff were super friendly and helpful. We stayed at the cottages on the grounds and ate at Latil's. We had a five course meal that was one of the best meals I have eaten. The owner of the house, who did not identify himself as the owner, actually gave the group in front of mine a tour of the house. I only knew he was the owner after I did some Google research. We did not visit the museum on the grounds but it looked like it would have been worth it. You won't be disappointed with a stop at the Houmas House

As soon as we got off the bus, Elaine welcomed us and she had on the most beautiful dress! She floated over to the first building we would sit in and showed us to our seats. We were then greeted by Darryl Hambrick, one of the founders of this museum. I was amazed when he held up a picture of Martin Luther King and pointed to his dad nearby in the photograph! Already, I felt there was a special connection to history and stories he could share with us. The River Road African American Museum is filled with so many interesting and historical items to learn from and look at!! Darryl was so gracious in explaining many things and answering any questions we had. He explained and has us think about the mental health of both the enslaver and the enslaved. He brought understanding to the long standing phrase "keep out of my kitchen" and how it deals with the matter of life and death and not just losing a job. He also told us stories about how enslavers would use their enslaved as guinea pigs for medical operations. It was awful and yet a part of history that needed to be shared. Donaldsonville was the place where the first successful c-section was performed. One of the items that caught my eye were a pair of shackles framed in a box. I have always read and watched movies about the enslaved being bound up by these horrid items but I have never seen them in person. I almost felt it was irreverent to stare at the shackles but also to not even acknowledge that they existed. We learned so much at this museum that we felt even though it was day 1, we could go home full with new knowledge! Nearby the museum, there are other parts to tour, such as the Church of the Ascension (beautiful building with lots of history), the school with a special garden, and a very historical Julien sugarcane planting machine. Our visit to Donaldsonville was rich with experiences we will not forget and stories that were so special and touching. There is a lot of pain that occurred here and in history that needs to be addressed and this is a good place to start learning.

Located out in Donaldsonville, LA in Ascension Parish, the ambassador working comes from a long line of people who have lived in the area for generations, brought here against their will and who have stayed because of the history they have created here. Admission is $5 cash only. The success of the plantations in Louisiana were because of the enslaved. Literal fortune was earned on the literal back of those who had no actual voice, who had no choice. Here they focus on the local plantations in this parish and the lives they affected. It highlights local artists and promotes the artwork. I found out about this from the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail on the state of Louisiana website. Each time I come to a place on that list, I am more amazed. I promise that this is well worth the trip out. Inside these walls tells the stories of a people who have had to overcome so very much. If you are not going to one of the plantations on the Heritage Trail, but going to others, I definitely recommend a visit here to see the other side.

St Joseph does an "in mourning" tours in October, which I hope to come back for. St Joseph Plantation is one of my favorite tours so far. It was just myself and the tour guide. The tour guide (I can't remember her name) is well versed in the genealogy of the families in the area. The tour started with a short video on how sugar cane is processed, planted, harvested and is very interesting. The guide spent a lot of time with me telling me all of the details, answering all of my questions and thoroughly covering every single detail. I really enjoyed this tour. It was also not as white washed as some of the other tours in the area. One of the guides also volunteered to give me a tour of Felicity (after I paid of course) next door. It was also just me and the tour guide on this tour. The downstairs they are making to be like how the house would have been originally and the second floor how the second family would have had it in the mid-20th century. Upstairs they had the top half of what was an elevator they had installed, and I think would make for perfect photo shoots for someone announcing they were coming out of the closet, and where else would be better since that kind of thing was looked down upon even up to the recent past. They are still working on this house, so no photos are allowed inside, but this has been the set of many films. The whole experience was amazing. I suggest both tours if you are in the area for other tours. Make a whole day of it!

As requested, I will keep the individual location names secret as to not spoil your potential food tour but also because the stops can change and I don't want to have you disappointed if you don't get the same places on your tour. Ty was a great guide, providing us with local history and culture as we ate our way down Magazine Street. The only complaint I have is that they didn't really interact with us during the food portions, standing or sitting off to the side, or running to the next location to make sure we were all set. To me, the guide should be not only the bridge between the locations and food with us, but also a bridge between the different groups on the tour. Ty told us before the tour started that the other folks joining us were from Michigan, but we found out from them later that they were actually from New York. Had these connections been made earlier, it would have enhanced the tour. On to the food, wonderful that it all was! Please note that I may make some errors in the actual names of the food, while I took pictures, I did not write down the names and there wasn't a post-tour recap to assist me! Stop #1: A local sandwich and a seafood side. Both quite good, especially since I don't like olives! Stop #2: An unusual meat that was shockingly good! Stop #3: Seafood options. I've had a different version of one of these items in Asheville, NC. This wasn't quite as good but still tasty. Stop #4: Southern favorites that were so good! I didn't think I would like these but I did. Stop #5: A peppermint fudge cupcake. Sadly, the weakest stop on the tour. Other that tried the gelato came away disappointed and my cupcake was neither overly fudgey or pepperminty. It looked pretty, though!

She came across like an overly dramatic theater kid who couldn't dial it back. Her mannerisms and constant theatrics were cringey, and while maybe one or two stories had potential, the delivery completely ruined them. She would randomly go off on personal tangents (where she lives, her parents, and other irrelevant details) that had absolutely nothing to do with ghosts or vampires and added nothing to the experience. The worst part was her points system, where she'd give out points if people followed instructions or answered questions. For example, when we stayed on the sidewalk instead of walking in the street, she'd shout "10 points!" and point at each person while repeating it. It wasn't quirky or fun, it was just annoying. I wouldn't recommend this tour based on her alone. After our awful experience we tried another company called Nola Ghost Riders and I'd highly recommend them.
