Stumbled upon this store with my partner while we were exploring the area and it was an absolute treat! The selection was wonderful with unique pieces and a range of prices that seemed to suit the items. I loved the mix of clothing, decor, and various wares (specifically the various old photos, and the McDonald's belt buckle) - I typically have to hit a few stores to check all of my shopping boxes but this was a one stop shop! Stephanie was kind and welcoming, giving us a great shopping environment as well as informing us of the marking system she uses to indicate plus size/larger sized clothing. As a plus size person shopping in vintage stores is intimidating and typically not very fruitful, and while I didn't take home any clothing this time it was wonderful to know that there was a place for me in the store. I frequent many vintage/antique stores and this was a clear stand out. Go give this wonderful store your business, you won't regret it! read more

When I poked my head in the door I did not plan on leaving with a posh, vintage fur coat because Lord knows, I have my fair share of outerwear. That evening I was wearing a lightweight coat and I was cold and guess what? I spotted this gorgeous black, 3/4 length coat that I figured it wouldn't hurt to just try it on. Priced at $100, I asked the friendly gent if he would accept $80. He says how about $85? I say, how about $80? He makes a phone call. Meanwhile, as he is waiting for the word on the coat, I wander about the shop. It is quite small and full of interesting items from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. But I have eyes only for that coat. It is in perfect condition, likely from the 1960's and it is so soft it feels like it could be seal or beaver. Now, before anyone thinks I am some monster for wearing fur, I don't support the fur industry and would never buy anything new. What I do think is that vintage items should be appreciated. A few minutes later, the phone rang, my offer of $80 was accepted and I wore the coat out of the store. I probably would not make a special trip to St. Johns to return to this small shop but next time I am in St. Johns, I would definitely stop in and see what they have that I can't live without. 2015 - Review # 12 read more

This place is within walking distance from my sister's apartment complex and is absolutely adorable. They have plaid shirts and coats aplenty, vintage purses, printed and high waisted pants galore, and pastel lingerie to suit just about any vintage lover. I ended up trying on a pair of pink pants that were my size and though they had a hole in them (something I always check for at vintage and thrift stores anyways) they were quite adorable. I have too many pants as it were so I didn't end up buying them but I loved looking at all the fun patterns and handcrafted pieces. Even if you don't end up buying anything here if you enjoy fashion it's definitely worth a stop in to browse. read more

So I went from bears and Pomeranians earlier this week to hounds and hares. Oh, there she goes again you may think, but just like Ellen Degeneres, I do have a point, and it is that I visited Hound & Hare Vintage. I can see you wiping your brow and thinking "phewt!" I walked in after being asked by a man if I had 40 cents. When I indicated I had no cash, he walked off muttering "I've been married three times after all." Great segue to get in and get looking at this great shop. I was greeted immediately at the door by the very friendly clerk, a gentleman whose name I did not get, but we chatted through the whole visit and that was very fun. I was amazed at the amount of great vintage merchandise there and how well curated it was. Oh, yes, and it was very clean and not dusty. I was very taken with a series of suits and dresses from what looked like 1960s/1970s era and that had obviously belonged to someone teensy tiny with exquisite taste. The clothes were in perfect shape and had obviously been chosen with love (and money). There's lots of shoes too! Don't forget to look through the whole store; it's a treasure trove. You could spend hours just doing this. So get yourself over to Hound & Hare Vintage and take a walk down memory lane and enjoy. I think you and I will both return. read more

Hound and Hare is that kind of shop many-a-neighborhood wishes it had tucked away on a quaint side street. Located on N. Leavitt Ave & Lombard and a block away from the iconic Cathedral Park bridge in serene downtown St. Johns, Double H is a cinch to find. So I admit, I gets my old school on, but I'm particular about what floats my boat regarding the seven seas of yesteryear. I don't accept the hipster okey-doke that polyester, babyshat green leisure suit bottom pants, cut off and hemmed to accommodate a female 2 sizes below me..... thrown together with a burnt sienna snap-button shirt featuring Cleveland Browns-orange piping and a can of PBR equates to "doin it with class". Therefore I can highly recommend The Hound and Hare as an excellent destination for both the voracious vintage value seeker and the casual retro-wayfarer. I can convince myself that I have a halfway eye for style (at least I know what I like to wear and am comfortable in) but I'm no expert, so it's quite fortunate indeed having the staff at Hound and Hare to provide a professional touch when getting fitted. They have an uncanny eye for personal style and are focused on assisting the customer make purchases that are truly a good look on them (me!). In my experience, the staff would rather make less profit on a sale, knowing the client was stepping out with the right items, than recommend something they felt was of less aesthetic appeal although the price tag was higher. read more

Stopped in here today on my way back from the farmer's market in St. John's...didn't even know it had opened (I guess just last Thursday). Great stuff, not too spendy...lots of skirts and tops for around 15 bucks and I saw a really cute dress for $28, that I think I'll try on when I get paid--if it's still there. I was expecting much higher prices (like St. John's Vintage on Lombard or Capt Fish Head Thrift, which is way to expensive for a thrift store in my opinion) and was pleasantly surprised. Also lots of shoes, boots, slips, bags, and a fair amount of kitschy home decor. Very cute little shop, with great items--I'll definitely be back. Thanks for coming to St. John's! read more

I came into Hound & Hare by chance last week on my first excursion to St. Johns, and it was like I had walked into my dream store where everything had been carefully selected, everything caught my eye, and everything fit me. I was looking to update my wardrobe for work, and I found a slew of fun and well-made vintage blouses, skirts, and shoes. I went a little overboard, actually, and it turned into a shopping spree that was quite uncharacteristic of myself. But I felt confident about justifying each and every one of my purchases that day. As I write this I am very cozy in a beautiful Norwegian sweater decorated with intricate embroidery and tarnished silver clasps. Yesterday I wore a pair of Hound & Hare boots to work. I can't wait to keep wearing the rest. The store itself was small, but with a beautiful selection. I appreciated the thoughtful descriptions inscribed on the sale tags of all of the garments, and the prices were more than reasonable based on the quality of the items that I saw. Stephanie was there that day, and she was friendly and fun to talk to. It turns out that the three pairs of shoes I ended up buying were all her selections.
