The 4 star rating of "Yay! I'm a fan" succinctly describes how I feel about this place. Had been wanting to try out Pearl Cup, but I don't live on this side of town and it's hard to drag hubster over to a coffee shop that is not convenient (le sigh). So when Houndstooth came up and took over the space, I was determined to try it. I got our chance about a week ago when we were out doing some shopping and it was quite the pleasurable experience. I love the colors and the accents - light wood in a, well, slightly houndstooth pattern (wonder where they thought that up...) with this tealy-almost-Tiffany's-esque blue, and lots of concrete and steel accents. It's a comfortable space without use of cushions, which I applaud them for doing. I have to say, the people here are NICE. Like nice to the point that I almost distrust them because they're being so nice to me. Or maybe that was the lack of coffee in me talking. Whatever, point being the cashier was nice and explained to us the different espresso roasts and which did we prefer, how did we hear about this place, yadda yadda. The lady who took our payment (it's where you order, shimmy down and pay at the other end kinda deal) was just gaily talking about dogs and striking up for-reals conversation, so I was smitten. It was the most engaging 5 minutes I'd ever spent at a coffee shop! I got the cortada, and hubs got their iced japanese tea-like coffee brew, which was quite good. THe only complaint is that they don't have simple syrup (I lament again: why is this not an option almost every where, particularly for people who like iced drinks?) My cortada was heaven - the crema on top was delightful and it was almost too pretty to drink with the pattern the barista put in. But drink it I did, and it was powerful enough to wake me up for about 5-6 more hours of my day. Only thing I would say is stealing that 5th star is that they had almost NO food when we came in around 4PM. I don't know what time they are open too, but I was surprised by the sheer lack of even a stale pastry or two. Maybe they tout the whole "Fresh all the time" mantra but it would have been nice to snack on something post cortada. We'll be back Houndstooth! read more

When Mudsmith is too crowded, make your way to Houndstooth Coffee! Came to the Greenville area on Saturday hoping to get some work done. It seems Mudsmith has been my typical go to for study and sipping tea/coffee but as expected, it was RIDICULOUSLY CROWDED. Per the recommendation of fellow yelper and bestie, Karen L., the work/study session got moved to this little place. VENUE: Located on Henderson near Beauty Bar, Barcadia, and Gin Mill. You will probably miss it if you're not looking for it. There's a tiny parking lot to the left side of the building - make sense because the venue itself is kind of small. WHAT A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. A totally different atmosphere than Mudsmith. The demographic appears to be much different too. At Mudsmith you get your typical crowd of college students, post grad students, and hipsters coming in and out. It's constantly busy on Saturday and there's always a hustle and bustle. Not at Houndstooth. Yes there are a few students sprinkled here and there - but the feel is just calmer. The music is the fun, catchy oldies Mudsmith typically tends to play, but rather the perfect ambiance to get you focused on your work. I didn't even feel the need to put my headphones in half the time. It's much brighter and airy compared to Mudsmith too if you prefer that to a dark intimate setting. FOOD/DRINK: I had a sip of their Conrad. I'm not a coffee aficionado but it was good to me. But I'm a tea drinker so I went with the Earl Grey. Very potent - and hot. Just the way you want it. They have a bar in the back with sugar and cream if needed. SERVICE: Everyone one I interacted with was friendly. I believe you're supposed to pick up your drinks from the counter but one of the baristos came and delivered my mug and tea pot. :) Very satisfied with the service. read more

If you need a side of pretentious with your coffee then you have found your place! It is hipster coffee with all the attitude you can handle. The guys with their plaid shirts, ties and suspenders will dazzle you with their barista skill set. First a guy will take your order to just tell the guy next to him (who can hear you btw) what your order is. Seems a bit inefficient. So I order a chai tea latte. He tells me it is spicy. Apparently the flavor of steamed milk is considered spicy here. Literally my chai tastes like milk. No chai flavor at all and they don't have any choices for any other kinds of tea. My friend got coffee and we had to go find sweetener somewhere else so he could drink the coffee. One tea, one coffee and 2 muffins was almost $15. I guess you are paying for hipster chic vs. good flavor. read more

The coffee is fine, but there's much better coffee around Dallas for much better prices. $7 for a bitter latte just isn't worth it when there are other better coffee shops around town. This is more personal preference, but this location is not suitable for any type of work. There are no power outlets around, and they play swear-filled trap music. My previous slight "beef" with this place was that it was incredibly slow to get a cup of coffee out. For my past few visits, it has not been a problem. I feel that it has been consistent enough to rid them of the bad name of being slow. So, now, if you feel like a good cup of coffee, not mind the slightly higher price, its a good spot :) My personal go-to is their cortado, just because I like my coffee with less milk. read more

Pros: The location is in walking distance for me which is great. There is a private lot for non-walkers. I really enjoy the community tables for seating--it is nice to be able to spread out a bit. People seem to understand that they are in fact meant for sharing. The coffee was decent. They had several beans to select from for the pour over and also have a whole range of other drinks. I really enjoyed the hibiscus iced tea, it was maybe my favorite that I had. The donut was good, nothing to write home about. They are really good about cleaning up and frequently come around gathering dishes. Cons: Their wifi is not the fastest, I did have issues with it going in and out. Also they are very limited in terms of outlets--so arrive with a full charge. There is maybe a little bit of the stuck up hipster vibe but nothing over the top. The pour over coffee was good, but maybe not worth the almost $5 a cup price tag. read more

I miss Pearl Cup. I really do. It was like going to the zoo, if instead of seeing animals you could see Dallas pseudo-hispters transfixed to their i-whatever. Houndstooth feels like something else entirely. It carries with it the ambiance of a leisurely Sunday morning stroll in a park catching butterflies with your family. The ongoing gentrification of the area has certainly transformed old stomping grounds. (*pours one out for The Slip Inn*) For better or for worse will certainly depend on your point of view. This place is pretty cool! I went to catch up with my friend and really enjoyed the atmosphere there. The baristas were very friendly and the coffee was pretty good. I usually bench mark coffee shops with how good their cortado is. They have pretty decent cortado (7.5/10). The only complain I have is probably the price. It's a little higher than average. Brings back Austin vibes. The neighborhood and location is just like what you would find in Austin. Coffee is solid, I got the cold brew. And the service is great. No problems with wifi or looking for available seating. Though, I did go in the afternoon on a weekday. But it's a great place to get work/studying done. Only inconvenience is the design of some of the tables. The tables in the middle felt an awkward height. The stools are a little too high for the table. So I found myself slouching a lot to be more level with my surface. And standing made it too awkward. It'd be great if they could replace those chairs with something a bit shorter. But the counters against the walls of the place are the perfect height for its stools and standing. read more

Houndstooth is simply the best cup of coffee you'll have in Dallas. Their espresso is extremely consistent, their drip coffee is perfectly extracted and their speciality coffee drinks are always fun and inventive. The baristas always offer helpful suggestions in a non-condescending manner that allows you to get the best bang for your buck. Recently, they've begun carrying Tacodeli on the weekends (great move) if you need something to eat. Bar none, Houndstooth is always a five star experience. read more

This is a good find for what I was looking for in a local coffee shop. Houndstooth is a great spot if you need to switch up your workday or study environment and knock out a few hours of work. I drink a Cold Brew, so I'm probably not much help to you coffee lovers! The staff is friendly, they have indoor and outdoor seating, an upbeat atmosphere, free WiFi for customers, and there is almost always other professionals and/or students that creates a "co-workspace" type of atmosphere. This may not be your ideal spot if you are looking for a place to spend the majority of your day as power outlets are limited and seating isn't quite as comfortable as other coffee shops/restaurants, but for me it's a great fit for a local change of scenery as a remote worker. I'll definitely drop by for a few hours once or twice a week and enjoy my afternoon Cold Brew! read more

This visit included several firsts for me--my first time at a Houndstooth Coffee and my first time trying Tweed coffee. Since I stick with cold-brew, I tried the one offered here. The brew wasn't one of the best I've had, but I am looking forward to trying Tweed's other beans. Counter Culture Coffee is also available here. I look for chocolately, and nutty flavors in my brew. Chocolate sauce as a sweetener was not an option here. :( The interior was awesome! There was a nice theme from the cool mix of old concrete flooring with modern wall decor, Seating is plentiful and cool with varied types of seating. This place is situated near Lower Greenville, where the original Pearl Cup used to be. I am a fan of Pearl Cup, so it would have required a lot to impress me - but impressed I was. Generally, when I try a new coffee shop, I order a latte or vanilla latte. this place served me probably one of the smoothest lattes I've had in the DFW area. The staff were friendly and very informative about their coffee, without being pretentious (this is important!). There are some unique items on the menu that I definitely need to try out the next time - like that Japanese iced coffee. I have no idea what it is, but it sounds delicious! I asked the barista for more information, and I don't know enough coffee knowledge to follow a word of what he was saying, but I know I heard the word "refreshing." It's been awhile since I visited the original Pearl Cup, but I don't think the ambiance inside has changed too much. Decent amount of seating, and a great place to sit and work/study/read/chat. Really neat place near Greenville! The downside is that it is pretty expensive, but you're paying for the vibe and the atmosphere. There are communal tables so you can sit with people you don't know, and there are even tacos in the morning if you're early enough. Would I go again? Probably, but only because you have a choice of which of the three roasts you want in your coffee/ latte. Check it out! It's a little pricey for sure and I kind of agree with another Yelper that "comfort" isn't exactly the word that leaps to mind, but this was a damn fine cup of coffee. What really puts it over the top were the baristas for me. Super friendly and chatty (not in an annoying way at all), really genuine people you enjoy talking to. I can't have caffeine at the moment so I was all prepared to get a steamer because I forget that decaf espresso is a thing. (Because WHY.) The barista recommended it and I got to have myself a very tasty vanilla latte with my chocolate croissant (those were damn fine as well--they're from a bakery on Oak Lawn, I missed the name). Two lattes and two chocolate croissants were $17, so like I said, not really an everyday place (at least not for us), but I'm happy the old Pearl Cup spot is still a chill coffee place, it's an excellent use of the space and a nice Saturday morning spot. read more

Very friendly staff, conversational and willing to make suggestions on the menu (which is important to me since I don't drink coffee much). I come here to study often and see a lot of people who do the same. The decorations and colors in the shop make the place seem bright, seemingly a necessity for a place where most people are working. We've now found the place we're going to come back to every year. Houndstooth doesn't just have amazing atmosphere, with hip yet comfortable seating indoors and out. It doesn't just have great service from friendly and knowledgeable baristas. Most important of all, Houndstooth has the BEST COFFEE of pretty much anywhere I've been. Their pour over is to die for, their cappuccino is excellent and their espresso cherry ice cubes (!) are totally unique. Thanks to Houndstooth I'm gonna come to Dallas twice a year. My husband and I arent in with the 'in crowd' so we felt a little out of place. The stools are quite uncomfortable to perch on even long enough to finish a cup of coffee. I noticed no outlets although its not a place i would want to work anyway. We dont usually pay premium prices for a cup of coffee, but i did enjoy the cup i had. I didnt even need cream or taste any bitterness so i can taste the difference just not sure i want to pay that much for it. I like small, independent coffee shops and try to hit one or two when traveling. I was disappointed with this one. First of all, no coffee shop should cease selling drip coffee as early as 2 PM. That was the policy and we need a coffee so I took a couple of poor overs. Now sit down when I tell you this because two medium pour over coffees came to $9.32. I wife said I feel like I'm drinking nothing but bitter water. I hope to god there is caffeine at least. After Google kept picking them as one of the top 10 brew shops in Dallas, I had to check it out. The atmosphere is super dope. Very organic, modern and relaxed. My favorite coffee joint in Dallas. My boyfriend and I go there 1-2x a week. Everything they make is wonderful. If I want sweet, I'll get a vanilla latte. If I want to taste the coffee but am a bit hungry, I'll get a cappuccino for that bit of milk. If I want pure coffee, I'll get a manual brew or pour over. Warm ambiance with a helpful staff. I came with a semi large party (12 people and 2 babies.) We were able to fit into a little section and sit comfortably. I was able to witness them help other patrons as well since I was sitting right next to them. The coffee is exception. Service was quick and all orders were correct. This is my second visit. And I wanna love this place, I really do. The coffee is super delish, the staff is informative ... but I wanna leave as soon as I'm served. Very sterile feeling inside that will take some getting used to for me. The espresso will surely lure me back...cuz, um, WOW. Yum. Perhaps I'm just used to hanging in the uber cozy lodge known as Mudsmith. A place that makes you wanna bring your laptop and your favorite blanket and stay all damn day.
