Houndstooth Coffee is a shop with a great vibe and average coffee. It seems like a fun place to relax with friends. The baristas are great and eager to help you. I thought the coffee was average. I had a triple shot latte and found it tasting like a normal latte rather than an extra boost of espresso. I also had the Papas, Egg and Cheese Taco with spicy salsa. Those are made by Tacodeli and it was average as well but I did really like the green salsa. If I'm in the neighborhood, I'd stop by for a cup...it beats Starbucks! read more

Houndstooth is bred in Austin, but a newcomer to Dallas. I remember when they were just a random pop-up shop at Transit bicycle company. I think they're on the right track because this location is awesome. The baristas are really personable and make an effort to get to know you. It doesn't hurt that they also brew a wickedly good Cortado, even if it is $4.30. While the price is a bit high, I'm really glad they're in the neighborhood to take up the mantle from the Pearl Cup. 4 stars for now until I am sure it's love at first site. read more

Went for a cup of coffee after having brunch with my husband. The place is very trendy, the barista's there are very stylish, knowledgeable about coffee and friendly. Very teeny tiny problem I had was finding a nice comfortable seat. There was enough people in there that made it difficult to find a space for two people, but I guess that's a good problem to have. As far as the coffee, I loved their cut espresso cups and the taste of the coffee was delicious, strong how I like it! Will be back soon :) read more

This was on my list of places to go while I was in Dallas, and it was a mistake to go. The gentleman with the receding hairline and glasses was rude from start to finish. Could he not tell that we weren't from there? I didn't know they worked in an assembly line. I thought there were two different lines to order. At the same time, I also wanted to take a peek at the pastries they had so I could be prepared to order, rather than stand there with my "ummmms" and hold up the line behind me. The man said, "Can you just get in line this way instead of blocking the way there?" Okay, first, phrase your question in a nicer way. Second, as I said, I thought there were two lines AND I wasn't even blocking anyone's way. *eye roll* He had an attitude while taking our order that I didn't even want to give my order. The woman making the drinks and the second guy taking orders for food were nice and PATIENT. Suggestion: have a sign to show where the line begins. And teach the staff how to provide proper and awesome customer service. Usually when I go to coffee shops, I order my iced drinks with light ice because they tend to pile up the ice in your cup and leave you with only half the drink (okay, maybe less than 3/4 of the drink). It also waters down the drink which I don't like. And usuualllllyyyy, the coffee shop adds extra of the drink to make up for the less ice that I asked for. Well, not this place. Cute coffee shop with surprisingly a lot of parking spots. There are plenty of tables scattered throughout with only wooden stools available. This place may be a fun atmosphere for meeting up with friends but it's not so great for studying. It is quite uncomfortable to sit on a stool with no back support. My other gripe is $5.50 for a watered down 12 oz vanilla latte? Me thinks not. read more

So this sort of feels like a hidden gem, due to the location and feeling of the environment out side. The place sort of looked like a mini restaurant from Austin. It had a chill/lowkey/urban vibe to the place. It is hard to even describe what the feeling was walking in because of how the tables and setting of the place was set. It isn't a bad feeling but more of "who thought of this layout and why?" Once settled into the tall chair small table area, the environment was a bit pleasant but awkward. They were playing from rock to soft rock to like somewhat metal music. So for those who would be studying would feel a bit meh. The coffee we got was chocolate latte and I must say the latte was the richest chocolate latte I have let my tongue experience. The even provided a heart design if you are into those stuff and they gave it with a expression of "we care for your coffee" because he poured the coffee and blended and mixed in a subtle style that makes you wanna buy it once more to see him batch a new coffee again. One of my regular stops since moving to Dallas Houndstooth has most of the elements you want from a great day to day coffee shop: - Convenient Location? - Delicious, interesting, self roasted coffee? - Friendly and knowledgeable staff? - Decent food options? (Taco deli and a small selection of pastries. Overall it's excellent. There's are some downsides: - Almost none of the seats have backs, making this a quick stop up to an hour or so, but not much more. - A single available outlet, meaning if your laptop is out of juice you're screwed. I've been looking for my hipster coffee fix (well really iced dirty chai fix) and Houndstooth did not disappoint! They have masala chai and turmeric chai, which is a huge plus in my book since many places have a spiced chai that tastes more like a bad PSL (and I also despise PSLs). Not here! They also had these really good powder donuts and the sugar didn't get all over me! All wins in my book. I came here to work for a few hours and they had a lot of seating and the music was pretty good. I saw one outlet in a corner but couldn't see any others, so beware. I got myself an iced tea and they recommended a berry hibiscus (taste just like Starbucks very berry hibiscus) and it was amazingly good and cheaper than the SB drink (like $2.50) I went in to do some homework and realized that the wifi was locked and I wasn't sure if it was free or paid for but I just used my iPhone hotspot (luckily) The guys were so nice and the area was really clean! I am not a HUGE coffee person. I like my coffee - freshly grounded at home and made by aeropress - pretty simple. I usually finish an americano or one cup of coffee, and I'm good. But at Houndstooth, after my first americano I was sorely tempted to grab another. (My student sized wallet and low tolerance for caffeine kept me from it in the end.) So - coffee? amazing! There was something specifically special about the atmosphere. The setting and spacing of the furniture invites people to sit together! I often walk into coffee shops and am so sad to see how all the tables are taken up (especially by one person), but at Houndstooth - it is obviously perfectly acceptable to sit next to a stranger. I hope that this sharing atmosphere lasts. Service wise.... I know many people say that certain coffee shops have great baristas, but I usually don't really sense that. Here? They really do. My barista talked to me right away, made conversation that was genuine and really cared about the quality of my coffee (he didn't like something he did with the espresso so he did it again). If you're looking for a serious study spot, look elsewhere. I came here last week to crank out some work and was surprised that working at a coffeeshop could actually make my work harder rather than easier. The place is outfitted in wooden tables and backless stools which doesn't bode well for long study sessions! Plus, it was super cold. I was only able to stay for a little over an hour due to all of this. However, for some chill editing / answering emails, this place is perfect and super trendy!! Houndstooth is always great -- amazing coffee and great spaces for working. This location in particular is nice due to the outdoor patio out front and to the side of the store, which I really appreciate. In terms of coffee, I definitely prefer the other Dallas location to this one. I ordered a cortado and took the barista's recommendation for which espresso roast to choose, and it lacked a lot of the depth of flavor I like in espresso drinks. Maybe next time, I will try the other espresso option. Also, keep in mind Houndstooth drinks are expensive. $5.10 for a cortado is a lot. It was a bit confusing that you don't order at the register, and I found that it didn't even matter that I ordered with the barista, because I still had to tell the worker at the register my order. I'm sure they do this for efficiency to get your drink out faster but in my opinion it seems futile. This Houndstooth definitely gets packed on the weekends so expect tight parking and long lines if you come during a busy hour. Other than those minor annoyances, Houndstooth continues to be one of my favorite coffee shops, but I recommend trying the Sylvan location over this one. read more

The Good: The staff is friendly. The coffee is excellent. The restrooms are clean. There is free chilled water. There is plenty of space that is utilized by people both studying and socializing. There is free parking (at least during the weekday). The wifi was fast. The music is good and not too loud. I like it as much as the original Houndstooth in Austin. The Bad: The only think I would change would be the prices. $4.80 for a large pour over ice coffee or a small cortado seems like a lot. I asked for an extra cup to split a teapot with my sister and they warmed up the cup for me.. didn't know it was an option and it helped! We wanted to like this place but the vibes just are not great. A rude, unwelcoming woman behind the espresso bar snapped at my husband for standing at the platform where the drinks are delivered. He was trying to be considerate and helpful but it was clear the barista had no intention of giving him the benefit of the doubt, he had no idea people were not allowed to stand there, as she had just been chatting with a friend or regular customer who had been standing in the same place. After that person walked away, my husband went and stood there and the barista immediately barked "get off there, you can't be there." Absolutely no sense of courtesy or respect. Don't bother coming here, Dallas has much better, friendlier coffeehouses. Any other local one will do. read more

Go to Houndstooth for what could very likely be the most sincere, kindest customer service you'll encounter that day. I'm a student at The University of Texas at Austin so I frequently study at the two Houndstooth locations in Austin -- N. Lamar and Congress. This store in Dallas, however, is hands down my favorite. Why? The #1 reason is the ample amount of space both in terms of parking and indoor/outdoor seating. The parking lot is adjacent to Houndstooth and it has a plethora of parking spots. It's so nice and convenient not having to find street parking, like I normally have to do in ATX. Again, the amount of seating available inside the store is just amazing. There's also a cute "patio" outside (with shade). Although Houndstooth is notorious for $$$ coffee, I think it's definitely worth it. I normally get either an iced coffee (with no sugar or cream) or an iced vanilla latte. The iced coffee is so smooth and is not overwhelmingly strong, which I love.
