Sometimes you run across a bar that has a great grill attached serving some really good food. Sometimes you don't. But in the case of the Hour-Glass Pub and Eatery you have a really nice bar that serves some righteous chicken and more. Located at the corner of Glisan and 74th it is a short drive from just about anywhere. It is also a favorite among workers at Providence Hospital, which is where we heard about it. Parking is mostly available on 74th, there are scant few spaces behind the bar and one handicapped space. The menu is mostly based on their proclivity for making some amazing fried chicken and other fried appetizers, but there are sandwiches and burgers, fish and chips, and chicken fried steak. Service was quick and friendly and food came out within a reasonable amount of time. There were five of us in our party so we ordered appetizers like mini corn dogs and fried cheese curds. Both of which were wonderfully prepared and worth checking out. The rest of the plates were the fried chicken and one order of fish and chips. The chicken is definitely the star here, although I was surprised at the size of the pieces of fish, quite large. Bring an appetite or friends. Side dishes were mainly either fries or jo-jo's and we had a variety of side salads, mac salad and cole slaw. All reported to be excellent. I am looking forward to coming back to try the breakfast menu soon. The rest rooms were well stocked and clean, the tables were also clean. The bar was equally well stocked with everything from your basic draft beers to any kind of alcohol your liver desires. One of the few places I found that serves fried gizzards. The staff was amazing. Gizzards themselves were a bit salty but still palatable. This is clearly a bar where everyone knows each other. I kept to myself, ordered a ginger beer and my gizzards, played the poker machine and left. No frills bar. They refilled my drink once which was plenty of times for the amount of time I was there. It gets pretty loud in there. Can't tell if it's just a roudier than normal crowd of if the acoustics are terrible. Either way I would come back. read more

In the last several weeks we have visited twice. First time smelled like insecticide and second time smelled like chemical air freshener. Both were so strong you wouldn't be able to taste your food. There is nothing GOOD about this place. The food is BAD - it's just microwaved boxed food - that takes half an hour to prepare somehow. My Drink was weak & poorly made. The - at the bar service only, was very slow. Hard to get water because the staff wasn't ever around. I can see some people liking this as a "dive bar" atmosphere, but it doesn't even have that going for it. Lots of screens, bad 70's music, and a front door that is - borderline creepy. Update: on a weekend trip to Portland, we decided to return here for Sunday breakfast - and, boy, are we glad that we did! My wife enjoyed bacon and scrambled eggs, while I opted for the steak with eggs over medium - both with hash browns. The order took awhile - there's only one cook who, our bartender told us, has been at this place for 21 years - but it was well worth waiting for. The bacon was nicely maple smoked and the steak was very tender and well cooked, while our eggs were perfectly done. The only (way minor) complaint would be the toast, which was of the thinnish standard sandwich loaf variety, but given that the whole meal including a Bloody Mary and a Rainier tall boy came to less than $40, I'm not inclined to quibble. Hungry? They serve breakfast 7 days a week. So go already! read more

The Hour-Glass Pub is one of those neighborhood bars that gives locals a place to hang out, provides a good selection of drinks, and offers several popular menu items. (The have a solid reputation for their fried chicken and JoJo potatoes... they are really quite good!) Located in an up and coming part of NE Portland, this venue has undergone a lot of improvement efforts over the last year. They've added several parking spots in the rear, made cosmetic enhancements to the facade of the building, and have made significant improvements with the seating and interior as well. I've only visited this establishment during the rush hour, happy hour timeframe. I'm not sure it's a place I'd want to hang out late at night, but given the steps this establishment has made to improve their image... I'm sure it's just fine. I love this local neighborhood bar. They make their ranch and blue cheese in house and it's quite addicting. Perfect for dunking their delicious potato wedges into and on their salad. Had a great experience here for a first time visit. A huge group of us about 30 met up after a memorial. We descended on The Hour Glass like ants on sugar. The single staffed bartender did an amazing job keeping up with our array of drink choice. We all ordered food as well which was delivered in a timely fashion. My husband ordered a cheese burger that was out of this world tasty. If you have read any other of my reviews you know we love cheese burgers. This burger was juicy and held together nicely. For a pub burger it reminded me of an all American cookout burger on steroids. It was topped with ham, egg, fresh veggies and oozing melted cheese. They also thru in two bags of Lays chips. A friend sitting next to us ordered a chicken strip basket. Thankfully she offered up a taste of the chicken and a jojo. I was unaware that this place is known for its fried chicken. Overall, their chicken is tasty and not dry at all, but tonight it was just saltier than the last time I had it. I love eating salty foods. So if I'm saying it's salty, then it must be pretty salty. We kept grabbing for our water because it was so salty. Dipping it in ketchup or ranch didn't really help. They don't have a very big parking lot. I've only been here once but I plan to go again. I had their housemaid soup that was excellent and took home or roasted chicken which also was excellent. Bartender is very attentive the one I met I can't remember his name but I know it works Mondays during the day. Heard him talking to regular customers and it seems to be a place where a whole lot of regulars show up on a very regular basis and socialize so it's definitely a cozy neighborhood bar the people enjoy coming to. Secrets to success and getting the bartenders (who have been here for YEARS) on your team: know your drink, be ready to order, bring back your dirty glass and order a double. The bartenders here are seasoned, they are salt of the people, one with the neighborhood. So don't expect stranger fake love up front but sit back and watch how they greet each regular (who likely walked here from the neighborhood) by name and know what they are ordering. Great food. LOVE the chicken and jo's, but don't bother to try calling for take-out. They NEVER answer the phone. Correction, they answer the phone maybe one out of ten times, and then they are stressed and seem like your order is a burden (which it probably is because they seem very understaffed). Maybe the owner needs to hire more employees, so they can answer the phone and make more money for all involved. I have no idea what is wrong with that bartender but she is extremely rude to me every time I come in there! It's completely unprofessional. I actually stood in a super long bar line today and the final straw was when she ignored me and asked the lady behind me for her order. One of my favorite spots in Portland. Used to live down the street, great bar tenders and awesome fried chicken. Sometimes it takes a while to get their food out but its always good. They can be understaffed at time but the staff there hustles to keep your glass full and your plate of food coming. I've spent New Years there and now living in Las Vegas but returning to Portland this weekened. I will most definitely be coming here for a great chicken dinner. Great local pub. I love a good food-related adventure. So I have regular occasion to drive down Glisan from 82nd to I-84, and the other day while I was doing so, I noticed a discrete sign on the N. side of the road that said "FRIED CHICKEN". "Holy crap!" I think to myself. "There's a fried chicken place within 2 miles of my house and I didn't even KNOW about it?!?!" Fast forward to today. My wife (who usually admonishes me for doing stuff like this) is on a trip, so I, being a free man, decided to go out on the town. What do I do? Go to strip clubs? Go out drinking with the guys? No, I go to some sleazy dirty run down hole in the wall to eat food of dubious cleanliness and suspect quality. Anyway, I walked in the front door and found (immediately 3 feet inside the door) a janky orange counter with 2 stools in a tiny (maybe 12 x 12) room with some fryers and a dishwasher. The lady standing behind the counter looked genuinely surprised to see someone come in the door. I did what any normal guy would do in this situation: Acted like I knew what I was doing and grabbed the menu to make an order. The front of the menu was very telling. It said "Hour Glass Pub & Eatery". That's Funny, I walked into a place called "Chicken Little Fried Chicken"... hmm... That's when I realized that this was just the kitchen part of a dive bar pool hall. Awesome! The menu is simple bar food and fried chicken. I opted for the 4-piece take-away for $5. The menu also includes up to 20-piece buckets (for $19.50) and a few "chicken dinner" options. The offerings also include pork chops, steaks, wings, and other various pub fare. The cook told me that it would be 15 minutes, so I made my order and wandered to my left through the open door into the Hour Glass. Now I see what's going on. This is a dive bar kitchen masquerading as a crappy hole in the wall chicken joint! You can't fool me, you sly people, you. Wow, this place has "82nd and Glisan" written all over it (even though its at 74th and Glisan). It is your typical smoky dive sports bar offering TV's, pool, darts, full bar, video poker, smoking, lots of drunk-ass regulars and... uh.. did I say smoking? Anyway, I grabbed a seat at the bar and had a couple cocktails while I was waiting for my order. The staff was very friendly and the drinks the bartender was pouring were stiff. The first thing I noticed when I sat down was the clock above the bar. All the numbers were jumbled at the bottom, and across the top of the clock it said "who cares?" Yes, who cares indeed. Classic. It meshed so well with the wood paneling, off-colored vinyl booths, formica bar counter, and shriveled up regulars. Everyone seemed very friendly (genuinely), and within the 15 minutes I was waiting I had conversations with at least 4 people about topics ranging from football to bicycling to television repair to the going price for NY strip steaks. Let's just say I was well entertained by the whole ordeal. After about 15 minutes the cook came over and gave me my bag o' chicken. I asked to pay my bill: 2 stiff vodka sodas and 4-pieces of chicken = $9.50!!! Wow. I said my thanks and made cordial goodbyes with the regulars, and was on my way. The chicken smelled so good in the car, and my anticipation grew with every passing minute. I got home and tore into the bag... hmm, wow, these are the smallest pieces of chicken I have ever seen! Do you suppose they have a connection at a midget chicken farm somewhere? Ok, well, maybe the chicken is so flavorful that I won't notice that the chicken wing was actually a chick wing. WRONG. The chicken is marginal. DAMN. All that anticipation to find that the chicken is really not that good. I guess the name "Chicken Little" was intended to be a literal label. Maybe a dyslexic named it, and they actually meant "Little Chicken"? Who knows, suffice to say, I am not satisfied. The breading was so so... lacking inspiration, it seems to be merely some batter, maybe some corn starch, but no seasoning whatsoever. The flavor of the old grease was shining (bright as the sun) through the taste of the chicken itself. At least it was cooked all the way through. So I just ate 1/2 a chicken and... well, I just don't feel satisfied. That has to be a first. I thought I was going for overkill, but the price was so low, I couldn't resist! Maybe I should have gotten the $7.25 "chicken dinner" that included jo-jo's and a salad. Or maybe at least the "2 tacos for $1" deal they had going on. I just thought 4 pieces was going to be way too much. After my Fryer Tuck's experience, I was being conservative. Crap. So, I give this place 2 stars for the sheer adventure of getting take out from a crappy dive bar in Deep NE PDX on a blind hunch. Plus, the staff and the clientele were super nice. I guess this might be a good place to be a raging alcoholic, drinking away your sorrows or merely living in a state of utter denial, but don't come here for the chicken. read more

It's kind of a divey-lookin' bar and it's usually full of old drunks at 11 am on Saturday... but they make some DAMN good food. I've been here a number of times and everything I've had has been great. My boyfriend and I go here for breakfast on the weekends sometimes, and oh man, their gravy is absolutely delicious. I'd almost eat that alone as a meal! It's rich and flavorful and chock full of sausage bits, and is especially delicious when you coat their diced potatoes in it. I use to really like this place. Good chicken and jo Jo's, and stiff drinks. But for god sakes ANSWER THE F#@KING PHONE!. I have tried to call in a food order on 6 different days now, and the phone just rings and rings. HIRE SOME HELP! I don't know how they can try and run a business like that. Also, the bar tenders are rude, and act like you are lucky to get served. I have been in there while the phone is ringing off the hook, and they don't care! They act like "how date someone call a order into an establishment that offers to go food on the menu." This is a good little dive bar. Parking lot is joke (2 spots) and food service can be a bit on the slow side. They offer strong drinks, friendly staff, wifi. They have dirt cheap breakfast. Fried chicken is surprisingly good for a bar, i'm not a huge fan of the potatoes...the wedges are a bit big for my liking. (like quarter of a potato) Regulars are on the old side and have a lot of miles but everyone i've encountered has been extremely friendly. read more

This is a 4 star dive as far as I'm concerned. I never even noticed the place before. I had, however, noticed the fried chicken sign next door many many times. As I am want to do with any mention of fried chicken... way to pique my interest and wet my appetite. But as there is barely a seat in the chicken joint, and it was a lazy saturday afternoon, we hung out here. It's bigger than it looks from the outside. Not very busy, maybe 3 or 4 pairs of people in the lounge area and someone playing pool. The bartender gave me the finger when she thought I was taking video of her... which endeared me immediately. I informed her I was simply trying to get enough bars to get online (and check in on Yelp!). But she had attitude to spare and poured a strong drink. I swear my cocktails were only $3 and it wasn't even happy hour. Sports were on the big screen - but not too annoying. We decided a few rounds of Keno seemed the appropriately trashy thing to do so we studied the pamphlet painstakingly and asked the bartender any nagging questions. We ended up spending $8 total and winning $2 back. But we have our system all figured out for next time. I like this place. I agree with the previous review. We went in "Little Chicken" (what they apparently call the entrance to what really can only be described as the Hour Glass Pub's tiny, dingy kitchen) a while back hoping for some delicious fried goodness... and what we got was unfortunately pretty foul. In fact, the three of us barely touched our chicken before throwing it back in the greasy white bag and deciding to order Thai food from nearby Paitong instead. Incidentally, we stopped by the bar side of things to kick off our New Year's celebration this past year. The place was hoppin' and it seemed like a friendly neighborhood joint to spend time in-- especially now that the smoking ban is in effect. Stiff drinks too!
