LAMB CHOPS W/JOLLOF RICE and sweet plantain
    Cleven I.

Visited House 157 for the first time and I was impressed. The food was great, we tried several apps like Calamari, mussels, beef plantain bowl, tropical flatbread, and kebab. Everything had its own unique and delicious flavor. For Entrees wè had lamb with Jollof rice, braised oxtail, whole red snapper, griot, oxtail ramen. All meals came with rice and plantains, and we added 2 sides of macaroni and cheese. We were a party of 5 and everyone was pleased with the food. Now the inside of this was nicely decorated, with a lot of floral elements; very photo friendly. There is ongoing music playing and a dress code. The service was good, server was helpful, there were a few moments of waiting around for more drinks. Overall my party of 5 including me loved this place, would recommend and would def return.

The ONLY reason why I'm giving this 4 stars is because the music was a little too loud. Outside of that, good service and good food. Had the scallop entree and it was a 4/5. Now their jollof + lamb chops was DELICIOUS. If you don't mind the music, I definitely suggest going. Also make sure to park across the street @ the dollar tree/dollar general (I don't remember which one it was but I believe it's allowed) as it's hard to find parking.

Great for groups and an energetic experience. All entrees we ordered were scrumptious.

5/5 -- House 157 is a vibe! We came here for a date night and the decor was absolutely beautiful -- modern, warm, and inviting. The front desk ladies were welcoming right from the start. It was packed, but still felt spacious and comfortable. Definitely recommend making a reservation if you're coming on a busy night. We decided to sit at the bar and our bartender, Brian, was amazing! I ordered the Iguana Margaritas...chef's kiss! He was running the entire bar and service area solo, yet still quick, friendly, and super knowledgeable about the menu. For appetizers, we had the calamari and coconut shrimp. The calamari was tasty (just a little chewy for me), but the flavor was on point. The coconut shrimp though? Omg, perfection -- crispy, flavorful, and that spicy sauce had the perfect kick! For my entrée, I got the Chicken Parmesan Alfredo, and it was bursting with flavor yummm just creamy, rich, and perfectly seasoned. I also sampled the mac and cheese (because I take that seriously!) it was creamy, saucy, and cheesy in the best way. A solid 9/10 -- would've been a 10 if it had that baked crust on top! The vibe was vibing, the decor was stunning, and the service from Brian made the whole experience even better. We'll definitely be back!

This is my second time going to House 157. My first visit was for brunch. This time, I got to check them out for dinner with another Yelper. As always, the vibes are right in this place. The decor is nice and the music is great. I ordered the Blackberry Whisper for my drink. This is a whiskey-based drink and I loved it. I wasn't that hungry, so I decided to get something that I thought would make good leftovers for the next day...the Shanghai Steak Bowl. The bowl was tasty. I'm not sure if I keep ordering the wrong thing or what, but I feel like they love to overcook their meats here. The steak was a little on the tougher side of things and I wasn't asked if I had a preference for how I would have wanted it prepared. Needless to say, I ate pretty much most of the bowl and didn't have enough to take home. For dessert, I had the apple tart. It was topped with vanilla ice cream. It was good, but nothing spectacular. The portions are definitely a little small, considering the prices. I'm not sure if this is to be expected more frequently at many places due to inflation or what. After having two experiences here for two different meals, I will say that House 157 is a nice spot to visit for a cute little time out. The drinks and service have been consistently good, but food can be hit or miss.

The third time was certainly a charm at House 157. I came here with a group of friends to send me off as I prepare to move out of NJ. When I checked in with the hostess, she walked me to the private room where two other groups were and said some people from my party were at the bar. I wasn't feeling being in a room separate from the main dining area, so she graciously accommodated us by clearing a couple of tables along the wall for us. On my first visit, my friend ordered the Beef Plantain Bowls and raved about it. I ordered that to start and I was not disappointed. The Plantain bowls were crispy, the beef was tender and spicy, and the pickled onions and sauce were a nice touch. I ordered a Passion Fruit Caipirinha, and while tasty, it wasn't a smooth drinking experience as the pulp constantly got stuck in the straws. I veered away from the Afrocentric and Tropical and went Southern, ordering the Lobster Mac and Cheese. It was a generous portion, cheesy, flavorful, and the lobster was nice and tender. Everything blended spectacularly. To end the night, I had to order the rum cake and another friend did as well. I think I enjoyed this one more the first time. The cake was drenched (in a good way) with rum sauce, packing a serious and invigorating punch with each bite. Hats off to the staff, cooks, and DJ for always making a visit here one for the books.

The food at this restaurant was amazing. I love how the menu has options for different regions of the world. I ordered the chicken empanadas and they were seasoned to perfection. There was also a nice crunch to the empanadas. There is an orange sauce that is sweet and spicy that compliments the empanadas. For the entree I had the oxtail ramen from the Asian fusion section. It was really good. The sauce was as a little sweet but I love sweet and savory. The decoration in the restaurant is elegant and chic. The floral design is stunning.

I really wanted to love this place. I read the reviews and kept and open mind, supporting a black owned business, however I was very disappointed. We had dinner for my friends 45th birthday, we all ordered a variety of dishes fried chicken, sesame chick, salads, snapper and we all had the same opinion.. food had no seasoning , very bland. The food was merely mediocre and definitely didn't justify the cost, way over priced. I think for us this is a one and done. Cute atmosphere for maybe cocktails but I wouldn't be back for the food at all.

Came here on a Saturday night for a birthday dinner for 5. I parked across the street and was immediately greeted upon walking in. We sat after a couple min. They had a nice variety of music playing although it was loud to the point where you had to yell to have conversation. We ordered a variety of drinks and mock-tails. We then ordered food. The jerk chicken, fried chicken, flatbread, and the oxtail. Everything was delicious. We were told we had a 90min time limit, but the food took a very long to come out so they disregarded that. We then cut a birthday cake. All in all I would come back, it was an enjoyable time.

Food and ambience was excellent. I really enjoyed the music selection as well. It was a bit crowded, but not too bad. Service was very friendly.

Sadly, this is how you honestly go from a 5 to a 1! Today simply wasn't their day as we went to celebrate their advertised Juneteenth celebration! All day specials and reservations! The IG marketing and promo were on point! We had a 3:00pm reservation and even received a reminder as we were 10 minutes away. Parking is across the street as they mentioned. No problem. We were greeted by "Do you have a reservation?" by a nice young lady professionally dressed. First impression - this is going to be an experience though her greeting was not what I was expecting! We are seated and several tables were already full but the restaurant was nowhere near packed or at capacity. Here is where the stars start to fall! Our waiter comes and welcome us! He begins by saying, We don't have...the shrimp ceviche, Paella, and something else! I was like wait...it's 3:00 and you don't have? Is this a joke? You advertised this major event and you don't have your top items? Okay! The service was a tag team and they kept overlapping and obviously not communicating. No problem....it was attentive. Calamari ordered and it was exceptional including the marinara. The lobster ceviche was delicious as well! It was the substitute for the shrimp ceviche- Beautifully presented! Happy hour started at 4 so I waited to order a Pinot grio or Sauvignon blanc...which ever was cold! Meanwhile we ordered our meal....My wife ordered the oxtails and inquired about changing the sides. That was a no! Okay and understood! I ordered the fried chicken and a side of black rice. Chicken was delicious. The collards were good and the Mac and cheese was worth the drive and that's a true compliment! The black rice will change your life!!best rice I've had outside of my Haitian friends mother! The oxtails are supposed to be braised but they came out with no moisture, gravy, nothing so they looked and were dry! They were seasoned well but again a little dry. The small offering of cabbage and collards on the plates need to be reconsidered to larger portions. Again, both were good! I asked the server for some Butter for the sweet cornbread and he looked at me funny but went to get some. He came back with melted butter in a cup versus a butter pat that most restaurants have or even a pat on a plate. Anyway, he tried! So we finished the meal and asked for to go containers. The server said y'all want anything else? I was like well what else do you have? He said, we have desserts. We said we would see them. He brings the menu and my wife choose the red velvet as it has a Juneteenth connection. Lo and behold, he returns by saying ...we don't have any red velvet! I was like wait....how can this be on a day you advertise and promoted your restaurant? I notice a male manager who appeared to be in charge but he never came to our table. Mind you the restaurant wasn't full! A small female manager came by and ask how was everything? I said fine with the exception it's is hotter than hell in here as it was 91 degrees outside. Yes, the AC was not working on such a big day! She replies....yea our air went out this morning! Not one person informed us the air was out! I was fanning from the time we set down and no one had the capacity to possibly go get a large fan to circulate the air from the hallway. It was as if they just didn't care and I know that's not the case. And to be out of food items at 3:00pm. Bless the folks that came after us and for dinner. Well, we did see a food purveyor truck unloading when we left. I travel extensively and dine out a lot! I am a foodie and a former restaurant owner so I extend grace...lots of it! Today was just not their day and then to add insult to injury. Upon reviewing the bill, that Pinot grio I received was not happy hour price because the server said only our house is happy hour price and we had to chill this for you! Man sit down! You never mentioned a house label for happy hour and you knew I was wanting the happy hour price! Cmon man! This could have easily been 5 stars with a couple of tweaks. This restaurant has potential to be the IT restaurant just not today. The little things matter..like the butter! Not having items on a day you marketed is not a good look either. I will go back! And I will change this rating IF the service is on point and they have items listed on the menu! I'm just believing this was a one off! Bon appetite!

Sunday post mother day brunch with 5 others. Parking is across the street in the dollar tree lot. First round of drinks came quickly, being we were just about the only ones there at the time. Waitress was very friendly and explained the menu well. Pros: you can order the all you can eat without it being the whole table; most of the drinks were tasty. Nice, but loud music Cons: Ordering the all you can eat, though the waitress didn't say it, you could gather the food was preprepared. Most items were cold and some couldn't be modified and 1 wasn't available. How can you offer waffles, but say there's no more pancakes? Another con, they don't split checks. We were a party of 6 and you could only use 4 cards. Leading to the next con, we were a party of 6 and once 2 hours were over, we were told our reservation time was up. With the delay in refilling the all you can eat, as well as the waitress leaving the table without the whole tables dessert order, to be rushed when we're still actively ordering is ridiculous. Also, 3 members put in to go orders. They added that to the table check. Once it was removed, they still added the auto grat for takeout. Which again is ridiculous. I originally was thinking about returning to give it another chance, but the service later in the meal changed my mind, combined with the food wasn't anything special. I can't think of anything I would say I would want again. That may be because I got the all you can eat brunch, so it was old and cold food. Either way, I don't see me going out of my way to dine here again. Almost 100/pp for brunch, not including the to go orders, and being rushed out with a party of 6 doesn't sit well with me.

Came here for dinner for my dad's birthday dinner and we most definitely enjoyed our meals. The service can be a little better because they are a little slow but the atmosphere is nice and everyone was friendly.

The food is so creative, fresh, and delicious, the service is attentive and knowledgeable and consistent (not the norm in the suburbs), and we love the ambiance. It was a gorgeous night to sit outside, but we opted for our favorite - bar seats to watch the action. It's hard to find this level of consistency and creativity even in NYC, but to have it right here in Maplewood is so wonderful. So many restaurants in the suburbs rely on frozen, pre-made items from large restaurant supply chains that finding innovative cooking completely from scratch is a real challenge. In a sea of mediocre restaurants, Perla lives up to its name: a true gem! We have been so impressed by the daily specials this summer. We started out with a scallop crudo with yuzu, jalapeno, and shallots that is my favorite crudo right now. We followed that with the new shrimp tostada and I'm only sorry we didn't order two. Later in our meal, I spied a couple at the other end of the bar who did it right: the wife took one bite and immediately ordered a second one so that she wouldn't have to share. This is the second time we've had the tomato salad with olives, shiso, and white balsamic and I can't get over the flavor combination - it's so unexpected and addictive. We can't pass up the broiled oysters with garlic butter, Calabrian chili, and crispy shallots - a dish I was obsessed with the moment I tried it at a pop-up event before the restaurant even existed. Then we had the broiled branzino with lemon, capers, and a watercress salad - again, the only mistake was not ordering two! We were actually down the shore yesterday, but came home because we were craving this dish. We finished off our meal with anchovy toast, which our favorite dessert paired with a crisp Txakolina. It's four pieces of toasted baguette with a generous spread of really good butter topped with one piece of salt-cured anchovy and one boqueron (a pickled anchovy). I can't recommend this dish highly enough, it is perfectly balanced! We love a BYOB, but it is such a luxury that we can order right from our phones at the restaurant from a local wine shop (Lum's Cellars). It's a curated list that has some really fantastic options that all go so well with the cuisine. We started with an Alberiño and then ordered the Txakolina. No notes! We can't wait for our next meal at Perla.

BYOB, but they are also affiliated with a local liquor store if you forget to bring something that will bring you a bottle after ordering it online (however a very limited selection of wines) Service was attentive, friendly and personable. I'll definitely be back.

For appetizers, we got zucchini chips, fried calamari and mussels. The calamari was fried too hard and it had a very salty, spicy Chilean type sauce over it. The zucchini chips were thinly sliced, lightly battered with Parmesan cheese sprinkled over them. They were decent but nothing to write home about. In fact, after having about six or seven of the zucchini chips I began to experience heartburn from the grease. For entrees, my husband had the chicken parm. He said it was too thick and should have been flattened more before frying. It was also very breaded. My brother-in-law ordered the chicken and waffles and he said the chicken tasted day old so after having a bite of one piece of the chicken he pushed the chicken aside and called it a day. I called the waiter over and informed him about the chicken tasting day old. He didn't try to change it out or take it off the bill or get a manager. He just apologized by saying I'm sorry. My crab Mac and Cheese was decent. It wasn't seasoned the way I would have liked but the huge, plentiful chunks of crab made up for that. I ate a third of my dish and packed the rest for home where I will doctor it up to my taste. I've never been to this particular restaurant before. The only reason we came today is because my brother-in-law was here on business and staying at a hotel in the area.
