I sat in the back room so I could hear my friend speak and wouldn't be too close to the band, and we were the only ones in the whole back of the restaurant from 6:30 PM until we left around 10:30 PM. It was a nice, quiet space, and the live music on a Tuesday was a pleasant touch- they played some Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel, among other classics. Unfortunately, the food was hit or miss. The bread that came out was terrible- hard, inedible, and honestly better left off the table. The brie and raspberry in puff pastry was okay but unimpressive, with very little cheese inside. It didn't even look like they used egg wash on the puff pastry. At least make it nice, give it a golden glow. On the bright side, the lobster ravioli was delicious, and my friend enjoyed his mussels with chorizo, though he felt the chorizo was lacking. He didn't expect it to come on a bed of penne, while the portion was generous he was avoiding pasta. None of the desserts sounded appealing enough to try. As for drinks, my smoky old-fashioned was so overwhelmingly smoky that I had a lingering campfire aftertaste in my mouth longer than I would have liked. Overall, if you're looking for a quiet spot with live music, it's not a bad choice. But the food and drinks were inconsistent, and I wouldn't rush back. read more

We reserved a table for 2 there last Saturday night. At 6:30, the place was fairly busy. We were seated right on tjme, and the server was friendly and attentive. They serve warm bread for the table with herb infused olive oil. We started with the baked artichoke hearts. These came in bowl with a flavorful EVO oil garlic and basil sauce, which there was so much of, my wife considered it more like a soup. It was great for sopping with bread. We also got the Ricotta spread, which was a nice mound of lemony creamy soft cheese, which came with toast points. It was a unique flavor, i recommend it. We shared the roasted pear and fennel salad ehich was an arugula base with walnuts, blue cheese an aplle cider vinaigrette. Very good, but could use more of the pears. For mains we had the chicken pesto, which was grllled chicken breast, chopped, and blended with creamy pesto over penne pasta with sun dried tomatoes. Goid flavor and very large portion. I'd say good for 3 people. I ended up ordered the grilled salmon even though i went there for the seafood gumbo. I had it there some time ago and it was excellent. I'd give the gumbo thete a 5 out of 5, but they have taken it off the menu. That is really too bad. But the salmon was cooked perfectly (they asked me how i wanted it cooked so i said med rare and it was soft and moist and just right) It came with a generous portion of sauteed spinach which was well-seasoned and tasted great and semi-crispy potato rounds that were a good accompaniment to the fish. We were too full for dessert. The courses came out pretty quickly, but we didnt feel rushed. Overall, a very good meal with good service. I hope they bring the gumbo back. read more

Came here with some friends for dinner. We made a reservation for Saturday evening and was seated in the back room which is more quiet from the front away from the bar. Our server was excellent and checked on us frequently. I ordered the hanger steak it wasn't too hot when I received it. Steak was cooked to a perfect medium, it was a bit bland. It did have a reduction sauce on top I was wishing there was more. They have some signature cocktails to pick from and full bar menu, drinks were good and strong. read more

Service was good parking can be tricky but there is a lot near Trader Joe's. I've driven by this place a thousand times. My friend and I made reservations for 730 but running late they changed it to 8 no problem. Drinks came out and my wine was dripping (no napkins) and got on my jeans. They said when we order food to order our appetizer too so they come out correctly. We order mussels with chorizo yum but quite a few mussels were dead and inedible. Such a great place to have drinks and eat delicious food. The staff will treat you with the utmost kindness and are attentive. Perks if you're a regular. I can see why there were tons of regular folks there. Almost like a "Cheers" bar. Bartender Ashley was so cool and was ready for anything we wanted to order. More of an older crowd kind of place, but I loved it and the live band they had on Tuesday night was a sweet added bonus. Located in a great town. Parking a bit challenging but luckily I got there early and found a spot across the street by the bank. (After hours). A very nice place to catch up with friends and/or just have a outstanding meal. There menu selection was tempting. I opted for their crazy delicious mussels & chorizo which was popping with flavored. I happily dipped my bread more than I should have in the broth it came with. I can't go to bar and not have my all time favorite...wings. They were perfect with spicy Buffalo flavor and cooked perfectly. Not soggy. I was happy girl. I went with a group of friends here on a Saturday night for one of the friend's' birthdays. The food was incredible but the real star of the show here is the service. Wife and I have come in here for quite some time, but just for a couple of drinks and a pizza or appetizer, and have always found it to be satisfactory. Went last week for dinner and all I can say is 'yuck'. Table of 4. Orders: Penne w/vodka add chicken Lobster risotto Spaghetti in red clam sauce Hanger steak (we also had appetizers: mussels with chorizo, a cheese pizza, and calamari - all of which were ok...nothing great, but nothing awful - pretty certain the calamari was just frozen calamari) Now one thing that each of these main dishes had in common is that it seems absolutely zero seasoning was used in any of the proteins or sauces. The penne in particular had zero flavor. The risotto rice was undercooked and crunchy, and also flavorless. The worst offender, however, was the spaghetti in clam sauce. There were maybe half a dozen clams in their shell on the plate - and they had not been cleaned, so they were gritty and sandy and gross. But the REAL egregious offense is that they put a big pile of chopped clams on top that were so obviously canned clams it was awful. Chewy, inedible, just gross. This is not a bistro. This is a cafeteria charging bistro prices for pseudo-bistro dishes. I get it. It's Westfield. Slap an overly douchey face and name on the place and voila, you've got a success. But we certainly won't be back. Added bonus: restaurant inside is tiny and there was a table of 8 women who were absolutely SCREAMING the entire time they were there. We had to ask to be moved to another table because we literally could not hear ourselves think. Spoke to manager who just shrugged at me. I am not a complainer about other customers. I leave it alone...but this table was by far the worst behaved group of adults I've ever seen - I was shocked to see that it was not just a group of teenagers. A positive - the service was great. This place cherry picks who can or cannot patronize their restaurant. I know several people who have been denied entry because of their "friend" affiliations or lack thereof. It is not "open" to all as Timothy Boyle would have you believe. I personally know of at least 10 people who have been met with blatant hostility and aggression from Chris Boyle and have been asked to leave the restaurant for no other reason than who they were or were not friends with. Stopped in for a pre-dinner drink and snack. Vibe was good, cozy and friendly. Regulars at the bar, friendly servers, and manager receptive to the room. Had a fall modded version of a Manhattan that worked brilliantly. M'lady had a few glasses of wine that were recommended based on what she said she liked, and they worked as well. Some hummus to snack on and when we ran out of bread, they quickly offered and got us more. Was it ribs or steak being served at the bar- cannot confirm, but damn it looked good. All other plates being served looked appealing, they surely tasted as good as they were presented. No live music that night, would definitely like a night with it. Terrible place. The 2 owners do pick and choose who can spend money in their establishment and seem to have a bad attitude towards people they don't seem fit or worthy to be in their establishment. The only reason they are still in business is due to a lack of competition in downtown Westfield. If the JT was still open across the street, they would be in trouble. The cheeses were good, but the presentation was horrible and the crackers tasted cheap. I recently was back in Westfield, my hometown, for a High School reunion. This was our lunch spot and it's lovely. Excellent service, lovely mellow ambiance and good food. I had the lobster risotto and man, was it good! Loaded with Lobster, very rice and very tasty. And actually I had ordered the appetizer size and was surprised at the huge portion -only to find when the check came, that she gave me the full menu portion. However, when I brought it to the waitress' attention, she quickly charged me only for the appetizer portion - perfect! My friend had the asian chicken salad and enjoyed that too. It was a nice night and we wanted to walk into town for dinner and a drink- with our pup. We saw that 16 Prospect had outdoor seating and was dog friendly so we decided to try it. The staff sat us quickly and were super friendly and attentive. They brought a dog bowl of water out for the puppy as well. For meals we went with the wings, which my boyfriend thought were really good, a personal plain pizza and the shrimp and cucumber salad. The pizza is a good appetizer size or for one person. I wanted to love the shrimp and cucumber salad- it came with a decent amount of shrimp and was refreshing- however it was a little bland. There was live music and a lot of people in and out, it seems like a pretty popular place. We'll probably be back again-the menu had a few more things i'd like to try! read more

I had to find a place in Westfield to watch the devils game while I waited for my passenger to finish eating at chez Catherine. I was told by the host at the restaurant to check out the bar across the street when I asked if chez has a bar(they don't guess its byob). Bar didn't really have a tv so I checked if there was something else. Not much going on in Westfield sports bar wise. Bar I understand this isn't a sports bar so the small tv was fine. It did the job I got to watch the game while enjoying a meal. I had to ask them to turn on the tv so I guess it's usually not on. I gave them a star for accommodating me in this but if your going to call your self a bar I'd think you'd always have at least one tv on. Service I was greeted pretty quickly when walking in. Ordered a Pepsi while I looked over the menu. I received the Pepsi in a small glass full of ice. I did not get charged for the soda so I did not deduct for this but I did however deduct for having to ask for another one every time I finished. I ordered four sodas. While I was drinking the third and fourth one bar tender was chatting with a regular while the other cleaned up shop. Isn't the point of having two bartenders is to have one clean shop and the other tend to alll customers not one. Not once did the bartender ask if he could get me another soda even when he heard me finishing my drink. He stood there and talked with the regular until he got his food. For this I deducted a star. The only person to ask if he could help me was the bus boy who came to clear my plate. Food I got a burger with caramelized onions, bacon, and mozzarella cheese. I wasn't sure if they'd be willing to do this but sure enough they were but neglected to tell me I would be charged for a plain burger and an additional dollar for each added item. My brother and Sister took me out for a Birthday dinner. My brother had been there before for the Jazz show on Thursday so he was excited to take me. Food: We ordered the Garlic Shrimp, Buffalo Calamari, Muscles,and Vodka shrimp pizza. The Garlic Shrimp - Large in size ,Great flavor and Garlic was not too overpowering however it was served a broth with bread saturated in it. We all agreed the dish would be best with less liquid and the bread served by the side to dip The Buffalo Calamari - Very generous portion , The sauce was good. But too much sauce made them not as crispy . I will order again but just request less sauce. Vodka Shrimp Pizza- Was very tasty and a good dish to share (2 people max) Drinks Blood Orange Martini- Great drink Grey Goose Orange, Grand Marnier and blood orange sparkling water. Yummm. I personally Added a squeeze of lime to take the sweet out. Nice kick ! There house Chardonnay is descent, not to tart or oaky Music The music was VERY good. It was a 4 piece band. Vocalist, pianno, Stand up Bass and trombone. They were Really good. Apparently they have live music 6 days a week ( they close mondays) The ambiance Was very Warm, nice wood work throughout and is perfect for a date, family dinner, or girls night out. Staff- friendly and attentive and the patrons were all smiling Oh yeah the dessert was so so BUT the winner of the three we had was a S'more /Rice crispy treat . What was supposed to be a gathering to celebrate Christmas turned out to be a major disappointment. Place is not equipped to handle large group of people. For the party of 15 people there was only one waiter to serve. Needless to say service was slow, on several occasions people had to get up and help themselves with napkins and utensils. Food was disappointing as well, panini and tacos came out cold and were sent back to kitchen. Lobster risotto was too salty and deserts were stale. We came around 4 on a Tuesday, on a whim, and was pleasantly surprised to find a happy hour with free food! We sat at the bar and enjoyed a glass of wine. My super shitty experience at the Garrison in Cranford reminded me that I forgot to write a review of an even SHITTIER place: 16 Prospect Wine Bar. Actually, "shitty" just doesn't do this place justice. If I were forced to limit myself to just THREE words, I would choose, terrifying, unpalatable, and ...cat piss. I will explain that one later. Upon entering the establishment, we found a raucous group of shithoused Boomers flooding the bar. It was 5:30pm. Our hopes of grabbing a spot at the bar dashed, we trudged to our reserved table in the back of the restaurant. As I assessed the space, I wondered, "Is this place under construction?" Exposed framing, filthy carpets awkwardly hung on the wall..I mean, do they think they have one of the unicorn tapestries from the Cloisters? While I silently lamented the state of the 'decor,' I also hoped that the food would offer some redemption. When the 'charcuterie board' we ordered arrived, I knew there would be no redemption. An odd array of stale ghetto bootleg 'ritz' crackers, 'fancy' crackerbarrel cheese, and some kind of jam that was too scary to sample. Little did we know, this gourmet selection would be the highlight of our culinary experience, because the 'pizza' was even more terrifying! This so-called pizza had quite a history before gracing pur table--from the Acme freezer section among the Elio's sale items, to the Prospect 16 microwave, to the center of our table. A truly epic gustatory experience, if you are accustomed to eating your meals from a plastic tray. The crowning glory of this dining experience, however, occurred when my partner began having a sudden allergic reaction I had only witnessed when she encountered cats. While she was in the restroom trying to recover from a sneezing fit, I realized that she was having a feline-induced reaction to the cat-piss infused carpet hanging from the wall behind her. We left as soon as she returned to the table. How this place even has one star is a mystery to me--a testament to the fact that money cannot buy taste in Westfield. read more
