We needed a quick lunch so we stopped by last week. It was raining, and not very busy, but the lady at the counter seemed like she was in a rush. We go three dogs, an order of poppers, and a shake. The food came out quick and hot. They use a high quality hot dog. I was disappointed in my chili dog. Chili had little flavor, and the cheese sauce seemed watered down. The rest of the food was just ok. It's counter service or to go. Also, it's cash only. It was fine for a utilitarian meal if you don't want fast food, but for the price, I probably won't be back. read more

Just take a look at the menu! Absolutely great selections. There is nothing like a chocolate shake at a roadside burger or dog joint. You can get a Chicago dog or polish sausage. Was working in Rhinelander and decided to take a drive up to Eagle River since I had never been there before. I saw Dinky Diner and decided to stop in since I like the one in Rhinelander so much. House of Dogs is a great spot right in the main drag of Eagle River. They were pretty busy for a random Tuesday in February. They have a good looking menu and serve nothing but Vienna Beef hot dogs, so I knew I was in for a treat. Give me a Cheese Dog, Cheese Fries and a Coke please! The Hit Dog was overflowing with Nacho Cheese! Nice and hot and needed some fries to catch the drip. The order of Cheese Fries was honestly way too big for just me. But they rated great. They had a nice seasoning on them and the same Nacho Cheese that was in the dog. Next time I'm up in Eagle River I'm definitely stopping in again to try the Italian Beef. If you like Chicago food this is the place. It is a walk up hot Dawg place. A few stools inside to eat or outside seating in the summer. Their Chicago dawgs is as good as you can get. Maryanne steamed buns with poppy seeds,sport peppers,dill pickles, relish mustard and celery salt. AND NO KETCHUP!Beefs are good also, and combos with red gravy or juicy. Fry's are an amazing as a side to the hotdogs or beefs. Like I said in the beginning the food is like your on Maxwell St. in Chicago. Like many reviewers, I grew up in Chicago where I am no stranger to Italian Beef. When I lived in Chicago, Portillo's was the "fast food Gold Standard" for Italian Beef. We never thought we could get decent Italian Beef in Eagle River where I have been going since 1968. But back in 2010, when we couldn't get to Portillo's, we decided to try House of Dogs. It was a HUGE hit with my kids (who rarely get Italian Beef since NC sadly doesn't have Italian Beef --- very sad face!) I loved it too. We didn't have a frame of reference to actual Chicago Italian Beef since we don't stop in Chicago on our way up to Eagle River. This past trip, we made our usual trip to House of Dogs nearly every day we were there. It amazes me that the very kind lady who takes the orders not only remembers us each year but also remembers our orders! Service is always superb and super friendly. Food is amazing!!! My oldest and I will sometimes switch it up and get Gyros and it is some of the best I have had! My younger son is very picky and he is more partial to hot dogs--- always uniquely ordered. This year he tried the fried shrimp and loved that. The onion rings are terrific! I never realized JUST how good House Of Dogs was until we were able to stop at Portillo's on the way back. By contrast, Portillo's was really disappointing. The sandwiches were much smaller. Despite ordering them "dipped", the were quite dry. The onion rings were over cooked with virtually no onion. So to me, House of Dogs isn't just "great for not being in Chicago". It is superior to what we have been able to get in Chicago of late. Not sure if Portillo's has just gone downhill that much or I simply "mis-remembered" how good it was back in the 80s... I just know that if I want excellent Italian Beef or Gyros, I'll continue to blow through Chicago and head straight for Eagle River. I just need to remember to get cash back from Trig's so I can pick up the tab instead of borrowing from my son! read more

It's been around for a while but changed owners. It is now open longer hours and has a better menu to offer. Under previous ownership, this place would have closed at 3 PM daily, but now it stretches well into the dinner hours. Looking for a Vienna Beef hot dog up north? They got it. Want a porn-star sized, foot long, charred Maxwell St. Polish with grilled onions? They got it too. Gyros sandwich? You bet! Burgers, cheese fries and your typical fast food favorites round out the menu. The crew is friendly and has good recommendations as to their menu choices if you're not sure. The interior is a bit crowded with counters and seating along the window, but plenty of table space outside in the grassy area next to the parking lot. Great dogs in the Northwoods! I'm a long time Chicago hotdog fan and House of Dogs gets it right every time. Their Polish Chicago style is made just right. Also excellent on the menu is their Gyros and french fries. There are a lot of fast food chains now in Eagle River; ten years ago only Dairy Queen was around - but don't bother going to any of those places if HOD is open! It's small inside with few seats and a nice area for family seating is outside with covered tables. One wall inside is dedicated to photos of dogs of locals and visitors - many are very funny with dogs in all kinds of poses. But back to the food. Overall the food isn't much better than any other Chicago hot dog stand. Vienna Red Hots (This is the hot dog brand.) and pizza puffs are mass produced in a commercial kitchen and are supplied to other fast food establishments. Also there is not a creative way to make a brat or cheese curds or many of the menu items. What sets this establishment apart is the delicious fries and burgers.
