As a master stylist, he knows exactly how to trim my hair so that it looks good when I leave the shop, as well as weeks later. This is a long needed revision to a formerly bad review after much thought. This salon is perfect for really curly hair with a finer or softer texture, but perhaps not the style of cutting that works best for curly hair with looser curls that tend to fall out in low humidity or straighten easily. Also, the style of cutting is more based on overall shape and look, so if you have any issues with your shoulders not being level or your head naturally tilting a bit to one side you may get an uneven looking cut. The couple who own the salon are fantastically eclectic and kind and I had a wonderful experience overall but was unhappy with my haircut because I picked a salon that is specialized to a different type of curly hair. read more

I have been getting my hair cut by Tom since I was a young girl. Now that I am older I still go to Tom to get my hair cut. When I was home from college for the summer, Tom highlighted and cut my hair. It was so natural looking and I absolutely loved it; I attached some pictures! I have been going to Tom and Isabelle for years because they have always provided me with the best service, haircuts, trims, and color than any other salon. Best hair cut of my life bar none. I wandered in to inquire about a cut after seeing the 'curly hair specialist' sign out front. It was a whim; if I had checked Yelp instead of trusting my gut, I would have missed out on an amazing find! I have gray hair; it's fine and naturally curly. Thom took off about 4 inches of COVID growth and gave me a great head and neck massage. The true test of a cut is how the hair performs for mere mortals. I've had no problem recreating my curls and have gone back to wearing my hair down instead of pulled up all the time. I have lived in DC, LA and NY - never had a better cut. If you have curly hair, give this place a shot - you won't be disappointed. read more

Thom is an excellent hair colorist and stylist! He takes his time, listens carefully to your desires, is gentle with a kind explanation if he feels like a better color or style would look best. I received 3 hours of individual attention to trim and color my hair. He kept the salon open late to ensure I got his professional best! His wife and business partner is lovely, kind, & also very attentive to your wishes. Ok, so here's how unprofessional these people are.... Months after posting about my nightmare experience at this salon (see previous review), I received a personal reply via Yelp from Isabelle, the owner. Apparently, she did not like my review! She denied everything that happened, called me a liar and piled on more hateful insults in a shockingly vicious and spiteful semi-literate tirade. Remember when Trump mocked the reporter who had a disability? Well, Isabelle seems to have a mean streak of that caliber. Here's a sample of what she wrote to me: "And as far as color you my dear are color blind . I do not have cranberry hair however it is not ash/blond/gray and raggedy brown on the ends With no shape, like yours , what a nightmare, no wonder you do not like yourself." Classy, no? You would think any entrepreneur with a single dram of business acumen would think twice before actually personally attacking a customer. They would just let it go or apologize, however half-heartedly. But not her. She has upped the ante now and brought upon her business yet more well-deserved criticism which will remain here on Yelp for eternity to warn off people that might otherwise have become paying customers. A classic example of being hoisted by one's own petard. I guess she must have cut that class on savvy business practices at the hairdresser academy to smoke cigarettes out back. In her rant, she makes the ludicrous claim that they are "artists". Barbers and hairdressers are artists now, are they? Not to demean an honest profession, but that's just rubbish. I've never known anyone to include hairdressers among the likes of Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Prince, Mozart, Maria Callas, Billie Holiday or Baryshnikov. Yes, you might get a fine haircut from somebody, but that doesn't qualify them as an artist. The English language has been debased enough already without going down that road. They have a very bizarre and narcissistic notion that they are some kind of hairdresser royalty and should anyone be dissatisfied with their work, then off with their heads! (Be careful, they do have razors in their shop.) So I ask you, the paying public looking for a good haircut: Do you dare put yourself at the mercy of these two petty, incorrigibly rude individuals who lack the simple intelligence to protect their bottom line by treating all customers with respect and dignity? There are so many other choices - do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. You don't need the aggravation from this horrid harpy and her hapless husband. read more

Cute on the outside and old & dusty on the inside! Stopped for a massage while visiting from Texas and thought I stepped into a time machine going back to the 70's. The spa service was relaxing but the salon is an archive of remnants for a cosmetologist museum. I made an appointment here for the first time based on the positive reviews. The haircut itself wasn't horrible but it was certainly nothing special. After spending a very short amount of time cutting my hair, he then proceeded to completely drench my hair with a ridiculous amount of product. My hair was so sticky I ran right home and washed it all out. On top of that it was by far the most expensive haircut I have ever had. I will not go back and absolutely do not recommend this place. read more

When I lived in LA, I went to the best hair salon in Beverly Hills, Cal Martini. He set the bar very, very high. Now I live in Annapolis and have been trying out one place after another (I can't fly to LA every time I need my roots done) Thank heavens I found House of Ebbitt. Thom is an incredible hair cutter, first of all, giving me one of the best cuts I have had in a very, very long time. Who knew he was once the National Hairdressing Champion in Scotland?? I didn't, until I checked out their website AFTER my amazing cut. And I have to tell you, my hair is not easy. I have a lot of it , it is very fine, and has enough cowlicks to drive me nuts when I'm trying to style it successfully. With my beautiful cut he took about 5 years off of me - may hair looks SO cute. And then he took another 5 years off when he told me I needed to warm up my hair color - a LOT. The result is that, not only does my haircut frame my face, the color is perfect for my skin tone, and I am beyond pleased. Thom and Isabel are both wonderful - wonderful people, artistic and colorful beings, who are lovely to spend time with. Add to that the lovely atmosphere in their meticulously restored vintage-style salon (but with all of the latest equipment) and the great jazz that is always playing, and the entire experience is relaxing and delightful. LOVE THIS PLACE!! All my life I've gotten the courteous "nice haircut" comment from my friends, which I've come to understand means, "oh, your hair looks different, I better say something nice about it". I've been to all types of barbers, from hair cuttery to skilled/experience boutique stylist, and I've always gotten the emotionless "nice haircut". I dreaded getting haircuts because they have always taken the personality out of my hair. Having been to House of Ebbitt 3 times now, I can confidently say Thom Ebbitt has unique barbering and styling skills. Now I get obviously authentic "Oh, NICE f*ing haircut, dude", and people reach out to touch it. I actually look forward to going now, because I know Thom is going to give it some flare. I also love the ambience of the place - its in an old house in a nice neighborhood in Annapolis. Thom and Isabel have a great decorating style with lots of interesting items from their long history of hair styling and traveling the world. Isabel has a wonderfully comfortable charm about her, that is a big part of the whole experience. This place is fabulous. It's a real find, an oasis from the " too many mirrors and too many stylists in too high heels atmosphere" of too many hair places. I know women like it (I've talked to the other customers) but for guys it's great because it's totally not frou-frou. It's funky and cool. The owners are a husband and wife team, Thom (Irish) and Isabel (Scottish) and both all-USA. (They have a US flag at the top of their mast and the Union Jack and the Marine Corps flag below it; son was a Marine.) Thom is internationally known, but Isabel does a great job on me. It helps to have a dry sense of humor to get their jokes, but if you just want a haircut that works too. Of course they do all the girl stuff too, coloring and so on (for guys it's fun to see women with aluminum foil sandwiches in their hair. No; I'm not making fun!) They're great, funky, fun people. Most of the time they're wearing something Southwest as they have a place there and it's fun just to get the story. I always think I look great when I come out of there. Most guys go to a place to get their hair cut, but women like decor. They've got that too. It's a neat place, with old-fashioned barber chairs and a rotating pole out front, THom's international competition diplomas, a case of vintage hair stuff, pictures of Rita Hayworth and a 40s movie on in the back, usually Katherine Hepburn, and a thread of classic jazz. It's totally Annapolis, and walkable from downtown for people off boats or in the hotels. It's just the kind of place you'd hope to find in Annapolis. (They used to be on Maryland Ave by the Naval Academy and moved out a couple of years ago.) I don't usually write reviews of places and guys don't usually care about where they get hair cut (it's just not that big a deal) but I read the review from somebody who must have gotten one of the assistants I know Thom and Isabel briefly tried out. So this is by way of trying to set the record straight. For girls, they're opening a spa upstairs in the building (it's a house in Eastport right across the bridge from downtown)--I told my wife I'd buy her a standing appointment.
