This is my favorite place to get things for my bunny! I've been inside a couple times in the past and they've had a couple rescue rabbits up for adoption and the staff has been super knowledgeable and helpful. I was also inspired to re-decorate my bunny's space after I saw them using little wooden Ikea beds. I'll usually get hay, some toys, and some treats here. My heart opens every time I go to the House Rabbit Society. I went a few days ago to get my bunny's nails clipped and knew they would have bunnies in pens to pet while I waited. I was right. This time I met a beautiful white bunny with black ears named Patrick who let me pet him. I marveled at his gorgeous white fur - what an elegant creature. Of course I wanted to adopt him. That happens every time. I think about calling back and asking for the bunny for days. But that's more up to the bunny I have already and they are two males, and probably won't like each other. They don't really care if the rabbits get adopted as long as it's convenient. They ignore communications and say dismissive rude things to adopters. If there are classes or resources, the website does not advertise them in a clear manner and communications are ignored, dismissed, or rude. I appreciate that HRS does work to educate the public, but their main outlet (social media) is incredibly poorly run by their volunteers, mainly Chelsea Mattson. They consistently choose the personalities of the members over the principles of the organization. They also aren't actually as useful in finding homes for bunnies as much, much smaller rescues that I have worked with. I have donated quite a bit of money to HRS in previous years but no longer feel they are an asset or an ally to bunnies and will not donate again until they find their way back to the organization that they once were. read more

I found this place on Instagram and was always fascinated by it. I knew they sold rabbit supply for a long time. I was in the area on Saturday decided to stop by. The manager was absolutely amazing. I seriously loved her. She took her time explained everything. We were there for about 2 hours. We talk to the manager for a long time. We were able to see the rabbits and play with them. I have two buns of my own and am an advocate for rabbits. This place is doing wonderful things. If you have small animals or a bunny please shop here and support this place. We ended up with a lot of treats and two hiddy houses. I even signed up to volunteer. I know they took donations but not sure exactly what. Yes I have a bun, he is a 7 month Netherland Dwarf. I've read so many books and articles on rabbits and was a tad worried that I need to cut my lil bun's nails. It is imperative you cut rabbits nails else the nails will curl into their feet causing pain. I've read by many fellow Yelpers exciting good things and referred to House Rabbit Society. My daughter and I made a visit this weekend with our rabbit. Upon walking in we were greeted right away and asked if they can cut our rabbits nails. We were told we can watch or explore around. Of course my daughter watched while I explored. Let me first say, the staff was extremely friendly and knowledgable. The warm feeling for bunnies to call a fun/safe place. Inside you will find many toys, snacks, food for bunnies, build your own bun dream play house, and plenty of adoptive bunnies. I've also seen the boarding area were the buns have plenty of room to roam. I wish I could of took some buns home. Anywho one of the volunteers who snipped my buns nails was so informative. She answered all my questions regarding my lil son shine. I totally felt the trust in the people who work there. They love all the rabbits and spend a lot of quality time with them. Another great rescue in California. We love these folks. They take in rabbits and if you've ever been there you can see all the great stuff they do for these animals. We had our girl we needed to bond with another rabbit and went through two boys - the second boy ended up working out great and we love him. Both buns are doing great. We bring our pair here for boarding when we go out of town - we know they will be taken care of well. The only hard part is going here and not being able to take all the rabbits home with you. So many great rabbits, just the sweetest animals - we still talk about the boy we tried bonding with our girl who didn't work out - he was the sweetest boy and we actually still miss him and hope he ends up in a great home. They also have special needs rabbits here that they give a great home - it's truly honorable. We also buy treats and stuff for the buns here - and my wife just bought two of their t-shirts. We are big animal lovers and support all of the top notch rescues and this is one of them. It's sad knowing how many people get rabbits, realize they don't want them and just dump them off or leave them in a field - it depresses me knowing how many irresponsible people there are in the world but comforting knowing this place exists. read more

We stumbled across HRS when we acquired our first rabbit, who showed up in our yard. They hooked us up with excellent vet care and guidance on how to care for the new addition to our household. Our beloved rabbit passed, but through the help of the superb staff at HRS we have fostered rabbits from and adopted 2 more. They have a noble mission and do an amazing job. The staff and volunteers love the animals they care for and treat them like their own. There are some negative review here, but I caution readers to keep in mind that this is the type of organization that relies heavily on donations and does a lot with the limited resources they have. So when there are hiccups in operations, they do their best to fix things quickly, but they may not be able to respond like a typical business. I donate to them through an automatic payroll deduction at my work and I encourage others to do the same. read more

I wasn't looking for a pet rabbit, but on a winter night a couple of months ago my mom found a teeny rabbit shivering in the cold, unprotected from predators. She brought the little furball inside and called me to see if I could find a home. Oh yes. Ohhhh yes, I could find a home! The next day I found a hutch on Craigslist and named my sweet little bunbun Clarice. She licked me and licked me and gave me lots of bunny love. Then, she lost interest in me and began following one of my cats around. All over the house - including to the top of the cat tree where they would sit and kiss one another. It became apparent that Clarice was not a little girl bunny when she began humping the cat. Then - my nightmare! He sprayed the cat!!! Oh. Hell. No. I called a vet, confirmed the sex of the rabbit, and then scheduled a neutering appointment. The vet quoted me almost $500 for the surgery. They explained it's a more dangerous and complicated procedure with rabbits than with cats or dogs. I scheduled the appointment, brought the now-Clarence bunny in for pre-op check up (an additional fee) and then decided to check some other places for cheaper surgeries. I spoke with Sandy at House Rabbit Society in Richmond who had a neutering appointment available for $100! Oh my goodness - yes, yes yes. We were really lucky that someone had cancelled their appointment, especially because the payment is due at time of scheduling and non-refundable. He was also able to be microchipped at this appointment - exactly what the previous owner should have done! My husband dropped off Clarence on his way to work and picked him up after work. Clarence was in good spirits! The society called to check on his recovery - which was going great. The incision stayed clean and healed nicely. Clarence had no problems! I am so thankful that I was able to save this kind of money, and come home with a happy rabbit who no longer humps my pretty kitty. Rabbits are a lot of time and work and money. They are a long-term commitment - 10 years. I can't wait until I can give my bunbun a yard to run in, instead of the condo he gets to run around. He's much happier and healthier now than he was when we found him, and I love him! And I love House Rabbit Society too! read more

We LOVE the House Rabbit Society! We rescued our bunnies from SaveaBunny, but I go out of my way to visit the HRS gift shop frequently to buy their bunny treats and toys. Feels so good to know that we (our bunnies and us) are also providing a donation simultaneously for all the cute little buggers in the back who are waiting for their forever home. An incredible organization with a group of well-educated staff to help and provide resources rabbit owners. They also have an awesome shop. Personally, I have not adopted a rabbit from HRS, but I often use their website to further educate myself on rabbit care for my two buns. There are a plethora of insightful and essential articles. Also, I use their shop to buy toys for my two rabbits. They are very efficient with shipping items out in a reasonable time frame. I will forever support this organization and their work to provide medical care for rabbits, help get them adopted, and help folks educate themselves on rabbit care. read more

I found a rabbit online that I was interested in. They were not doing "bunny visits" during this time period, so I was able to ask questions, get photos and arrange for pick up. They were great. One day I bought a rabbit from a Pet Store with little knowledge on how to properly care for it. I bought all the supplies I needed temporary but I decided that I needed more information on caring for a rabbit so I came across this place. I took my rabbit, well technically I bought it as a gift. Well I took it here to have them exam what breed it may be because the store sure wasn't helpful. They told me I shouldn't have bought it from a pet store because that's only going to help them to sell more pets. I feel the same way now about getting my dog from a backyard breeder but I guess I don't regret a thing because I love my pets. Any who, the staff were very friendly and adored the bunny. They also have a very sweet cat that roams around in there. I was looking at some of the products in their "hop shop" and decided I needed more hay for the bunny but one of the staff members told me that she has a better deal, a garbage bag full of fresh timothy hay for $5 rather than buying a small bag of commercial branded hay. Which cost more. They told me that the rabbit nails were long and that they will trim him for free. That was pretty awesome because I get to see how they do it to learn for myself. She also said the cage I had was too small for a rabbit. It's bigger than what most have in my opinion, I bought the Super Pet Cage. Well today, the little guy lives with my friend. He now has a 200$ 2 story hutch, (he's a netherland dwarf) and I also have a rabbit of my own. I first became aware of the House Rabbit Society when an abandoned rabbit showed up in my yard. I knew nothing about rabbits, but I knew to take him to the local Animal Control would probably be a death sentence. So with the help of Google, I found the HRS located just two miles away from my home! Who knew Richmond was the International Headquarters for the HRS? While they couldn't take the little buns off my hands, they invited me to come in so they could take a look at him and see if he needed any medical care. They ended up loaning me an x-pen and gave me some hay so that I could take care of him until I found its owners or someone to adopt him. They couldn't be kinder. Fast forward one year, that little abandoned bunny Mr. Binkles and his new girlfriend, Mrs. Peabody are fully enscounced members of my household. I've stopped by the HRS several times now either to buy a bag of hay and other supplies, or just to get some advice from one of the many knowledgeable rabbit volunteers. The HRS rocks! read more

HRS does a good job of appraising and educating would-be rabbit owners. My roommate is allergic to cats but I wanted a pet so am about to bring home a pet rabbit from HRS. They require you watch training videos and interview, as well as fill out an app and read up on proper rabbit care. These are NOT low maintenance pets! The organization and staff want to make sure that prospective owners know what all is involved and to make sure that the rabbits and owners are a good long-term fit. All the rabbits here are really adorable and fun. One of my friends recommended East Bay/Oakland(?) Human Society since those rabbits are more at risk of being offed, but I'd already been in process with HRS staff and one particular animal. If you are allergic to dogs or cats but want one, you should definitely consider a rabbit! And they are litter trainable. Staff seem overworked due to the low budget but they do a really good job all things considered. The place is walkable from Richmond BART. read more

A cause near and dear to my heart, the House Rabbit Society is doing an amazing service to an animal that has been severely manipulated and used by people. Rabbits are complicated animals and the general public actually knows very little about their care, which is why so many end up being surrendered to rescues or abandoned. We are so grateful that the executive director gave us some time out of her day to give us a tour of this amazing place. It was like our Disney World! Aside from the many beautiful buns, they have a gift shop full of bunny trinkets, and home goods and treats for bunnies. We picked up the organic Oxbow barley biscuits (which our bunnies go absolutely cuckoo for) and a few other toys. We also picked up some Sweet & Sara Veeps!! They were delicious. This review is on boarding only: This is the only place I'll take my bunny to for boarding. For me it's worth the long drive and extra cost. They provide food (pellets, hay, veggies) but if you prefer to bring your own, you can do that also. I usually bring my own veggies and treats. What I really like is that the staff seems familiar with all the bunnies in their care. Some are HRS rescues and some are boarders. But if you stop to look at another rabbit, they can usually give you a rundown of it's personality. Most important to me is that I don't get my rabbit back all traumatized after having him boarded for a week or so. I feel much better putting him someplace where he has his own pen instead of being in a cage. read more

We adopted our second bunny from here and the staff are all outstanding with the bonding process and very patient. They only take in bunnies from other shelters that are supposed to be euthanized v bunnies from the public etc. Everyone is super pleasant and passionate about bunnies. Our Kippy found her Pumpy (short for Pumpernickel) here and they are not totally bonded but friends. They have hay for a great price and all proceeds go towards a great cause so I always try to come and buy toys and supplies here. Our bunnies especially love the twig tunnel and the holiday mats that the employees make. Please support this organization via Amazon by choosing them as your preferred organization! This was the place I encountered one of the greatest loves of my life, my rabbit that I ended up adopting from here named Herbie. Chris, who is an amazing rabbit person helped me with the motions through the adoption and he also vouched for me. He has been wonderful and will always ask about my Bun when ever he see me at the local aquarium store that I work at. The HRS is one of the best places I have seen that offer boarding for rabbits when you need to go away on a trip. They keep them in separated and spacious pens that have plenty of clean hay(changed daily) and soft towels for them to clean house with. Their rabbits that are up for adoption are healthy and have AMAZING personalities. What stood out most about the rabbit's hold areas so just how much room those little cute balls of fuff have to run around and binky as well as ploop on the ground and just relax. HRS even has a hoop shop for your little bunny friend when they need snacks and toys as well as a large flake of hay. If you are thinking of adopting, this is the place to come. The people here are knowledgeable and really care passionately for their animals. Sometimes you will encounter people who put their rabbits first here.... and people come second .. =p read more

This is a great organization filled with knowledgeable rabbit people, so if you are looking to adopt, or just have behavior/health/bunny-related questions, this is the place to call or visit. They have lots of bunnies here for adoption, as well as a rabbit supply store in the front. I like to get willow balls for my rabbits here, as well as the little plastic containers of dried fruits (rabbit treats!) (that humans can eat as well!). Also, I wish we had purchased our rabbit x-pen here- it's cheaper than the one we bought, and cheaper than a lot of other places we've seen. So if you need an x-pen, go here first. Overall I would recommend the HRS headquarters as a great place for rabbit education, behavioral help, boarding, adopting and bunny bonding. read more

HORRIBLE mistake made by HRS! Their admin should be rated NEGATIVE. On 3/26 at 4:32pm, I made boarding request in Dec via HRS website. On 3/26 at 4:33pm, I received an email to confirm my boarding request. On 4/19 at 10:22am, someone from HRS called me saying they have to cancel my Dec boarding reservation because their software has problem. Per HRS, no one can make reservation in Dec until Sept 1 at 9am and that is their policy. There was NO where on their website nor on their email distribution mention this policy. (NOTE: they put up this policy on their website AFTER my call!) Me, as a client, how can I know they have this policy without putting it on their website? How can I know HRS software has problem? I made travel plan after my reservation is confirmed. Now, HRS asked me to call them on Sept 1 at 9am to make a reservation and HOPEFULLY I can get a space for my bunnies. What if I could not get a space when I call on Sept 1? Then I have to change my travel plan and I HAVE to pay for the cost differences due to HRS mistake?! This is ridiculous! HRS is not taking their responsibility for their mistakes. Warning to all bunny owners, call HRS to make your boarding reservation. Who know when their software will have problem again which may screw up your own plan. read more

Found about this place from a co-worker -- I went to visit her rabbits who were being boarded there while she was on vacation. They were in open pens and given lots of loving care - healthy pellets, hay, fresh veggies, water, exercise and socializing with friendly human caretakers. Forget about boarding your rabbits at your neighborhood pet hospital where they'll get spooked by the utterings of dogs and cats. This is a Four Seasons spa for rabbits and only rabbits! House Rabbit Society is also a great place to get supplies for your bunny and also to find one. Our family's getting ready to adopt one from here soon. read more

We boarded our bun here in November and they were great with her! They gave her a mix of pellets, hay, greens and treats, just like we do. They groomed her and kept her area clean (a fenced in area on the floor that she had to herself - importantly: not a cage). For a few dollars extra they trimmed her nails and cleaned her scent glands (our bun is modest, and prefers invasive procedures from strangers :). When she came home, she was entirely calm (as other reviewers have noted) - which says so much about the great care she received. What a wonderful place. I adopted my Lola, a 3 year old New Zealand, a couple of weeks ago. Everyone is so knowledgeable. Prices on products are GREAT! The litter is twice the price online and I checked 3 sites (couldn't find it at any local stores). Will only buy my hay here too since I can't find fresh hay anywhere else (never buy from a pet store-it's not fresh). Bought a HUGE ikea packed bag of Orchard (best for allergies) for $10. They prepare you well for adoption. The place is very clean and it's so obvious how much they care for bunns. Will be boarding here for a month in October. read more

I'm a volunteer here - so be warned that this post is a little biased. This place is so much more than just adoptable rabbits. They are open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, 12 to 5 pm. The shop here is amazing! Prices are as good as (and often better) than pet stores and you feel good shopping here, because you're supporting a great cause! A huge bag of hay for only $11.99 (no tax!) and it even comes in a reusable Ikea bag. They also have the largest selection of adoptable rabbits that you'll find at any shelter in the bay area. On site they have about 30 rabbits available. They have even more bunnies in foster care. You can even bring your bunny in for nail trimmings, grooming or make reservations for boarding services! (But be warned: Boarding during popular vacation times fills up really quickly, so make sure to book early!) read more

They turned me down and didn't get any help. They didn't even tell me they have an adoption center. I am disappointed with your services. My all-time favorite place to board my two rabbits when I'm on vacation! They always take really good care of them, to the point that they're always very lively and jumpy whenever I pick them up. The room they provide is also very spacious, and they feed them well. Just make sure to book in advance for the holidays (especially Thanksgiving and Christmas), but the reservation process itself is very straightforward (just shoot them an e-mail and they'll reply the next day). I recently adopted a bunny from the Burlingame SPCA. Bunnies are very different from cats/dogs, so I wanted to make sure to get all the info necessary to keep my bunny happy and healthy. I spent a few weeks researching online and found great information on http://www.rabbit.org. When I found out that the House Rabbit Society was across the bay in Richmond I decided to load up my bunny, Cocoa, into the car and drive over for a nail clipping and to ask some follow up questions. Everyone is so knowledgeable and so nice! I felt very comfortable asking the million and a half questions that I had stored up over the past handful of weeks. They took their time answering my questions and everyone was so nice to Cocoa! They not only clipped her nails, but they actually showed me how to do it. They also informed me that my bunny is a mini Rex. They knew right away based off of her type of fur. I had so much fun wandering around and visiting with the bunnies. They also have a store with tons of bunny supplies. Visiting was a great experience! I'm glad places like this exist! read more

An amazing, wonderful, easy going, kind, helpful, knowledgable staff. Great open and peaceful environment, good space for all even when it is busy. You can tell the animals have what they need and they receive real quality care because every last one is relaxed and content in their space. My two children, ages 5 & 9, and I were there for quite some time on this busy Sunday for a few test run bonding sessions to help our little bunny boy find a bunny buddy. So, we visited with everyone and every rabbit and there was only one rabbit in the entire place who was in the new intake room who thumped about his cage when I was in the room. They have a fantastic bunny play area in one hall and the rabbits are given ample time here to enjoy a change of scene. They have a fun room to shop around in for supplies including toys, treats, books, and very reasonably priced bulk bagfuls of orchard grass! The staff is incredibly polite and communicative and they go above and beyond to make sure your entire family's visit, including the furry half's, is the best experience possible.
