I bought a Christmas tree with the bowl attached to the bottom and when I got home, it leaked all over the place. I had to remove the bowl and make sure the tree had water overnight since they had already closed. I went in the next day to let them know and get a refund for the defective bowl. They would not refund the money, and told me I had to call corporate. So I did and they told me I had to bring the tree back so they could attach a new bowl. I don't have a way to put the tree back on top the car and tie it down and drag it back to the store. Moral: put water in the bowl before you leave the store or go elsewhere. These garden centers are all over Houston and they have this circus vibe with their yellow and red trademark awnings. If they don't have it, then it may not exist as these places are massive and wow, just wow. I wish we had local garden center here in Jacksonville like these bohemouths. I am always looking to help my daughter with landscaping when I am in town so searching for plants is not only a priority it's a love. I have visited many different garden centers in Houston and this one is on flora and fauna steroids and at times overwhelming. Need anything from rocks and dirt to trees and flowers they are able to provide it all. Because it can be super busy and they could use a few more helpers I give them a 4 star for the Walmart of garden centers!!! read more

I suspect there's something underhanded going on with their hiring, being since only one person spoke English. I'm sorry but that's unacceptable in this part of town. I just went to Mexico a few weeks ago and when necessary I spoke what Spanish I could. In this country you speak English. The staff repeatedly told us they didn't speak English and we had to use a translator app to get help for a Christmas tree. Seriously ?! The trees were super expensive. The $69.99 special trees looked pretty shabby so we went with one a little higher. They charged $20 or so extra to nail On a stand. Even the cashiers can't communicate with you. I brought 2 bags of weed and feed and came home and after talking with my wife she said we needed winterize treatment, within an hour I went back to return or exchange and they would not let me do it. The staff are rude and lacking customer service skills. They behave as though the Houston Garden Center doesn't need your business. I know Home Depot and Lowe's have an array of problems but at least the employees are not allowed to be rude. 2 stars for the health of the plant when I picked it up and the variety of plants they offer (mostly outdoor) However; every EVERY PLANT I got from this location (3) Was infested with white flies (2 of the 3) and the other with mealy bugs. Went there to buy some dirt. Asked the cashier if they could load a bag into my car. Was told no but they could get someone to. I said fine, i didn't care who, and then was told i needed to go to back outside of the store to get a red cart and get the bag of dirt so they could ring it up and then find someone to take it to my car. This place is a rip off! I purchased 5 plants for $9.99 and went back to get 5 more and they charged $16.99 for the exact same plant at a different location. It was not a sale or special item. This is how they rip you off, they put the exact same plant in a larger container and charge more money. Be extremely careful shopping here! They say better plants for less, but buyer beware! That is false advertising! Go to Home Depot or Lowe's instead. Terrible. I remember today why I hate going here. This is a business whose exclusive function is to sell plants. Yet no one can identify any plant you bring in or even tell you where the plant is even located on property. I cannot believe they are still in business. Also, this is the first time I actually ran into an English-speaking person at checkout to vent my frustration. Typically, I run into only Spanish speaking individuals attempting to run a business in America who do not know their trade and say no Habla. Avoid at all costs unless you are a professional, speak the language and know where all of their products are in advance. Hopefully AI will replace most of these people so a resident can type on a screen what they want or take a picture of a plant they bring in and the screen will tell you what the plant is, where the plant is located on property and what it needs to flourish. read more

Beware if you are buying any plant that is not in bloom. The type and color flower may not be necessarily as it is tagged! I only buy at end of season when plants are marked down so that when it blooms next year, and not the color or type I expected, it's not much of a big loss to pull it up and throw it away. Especially since they have such a strict no return policy. I think they know this and that is why there is that "no return" policy. read more

If I could give negative reviews, I would. I was there, bought 15 bags of garden soil, a few citrus trees, and other things. I didn't leave the register, then saw they sold soil in bulk. I asked to return my purchase in lieu of the bulk price posted on the wall. The cashier said no refunds so I asked for a manager, I hadn't even left the register mind you. The manager, Alex, again denied me an exchange and just said it was just their policy. I accepted my defeat and asked the manager to, "have some help getting this to my truck before I lose my mind and kill someone." Obviously, this was a passive aggressive, "get me out of here," on my part but the manager said, "I'd like to see you try." As I left, he called me "pussy." Staff is rude on the phone... when I called the other day the lady was abrupt and rude regarding my questions on the business. I was trying to understand if I can find a certain plant for my business that sprays water at people... they seem to spend more money on advertising on the local TV stations... one commercial even had monkeys, which makes this place look like a circus. Lazy Brook/Timbergrove location off W 18th street. They do not honor their prices on the signs posted by the plants. I went to purchase 10 yellow day lilly plants and the sign stated $9.99 each. When I got to the register the price rung up as $11.99 each. I mentioned the price of $9.99 on the sign but the cashier said there was only the $11.99 price in the register to choose from. A guy was standing nearby (manager I presume) and came over to tell me the price in the register is the price they have to charge. I said the sign stated a lower price and that was false advertising. He said it didn't matter and they will charge whatever price is in the register. They just lost a long time customer based on greed and pathetic customer service. read more

I have been a long time customer of the Cypress location on 290 - Hooper Sisters and have spent thousands of dollars there until today. This morning I asked the manager if I could get a helper to help me with some 30 gallon holly's as I am not strong enough to load on a cart and load into my vehicle. He was very rude and said they were all busy at the time and when I asked since he's the manager could he help, otherwise I would not be able to purchase the $500.00 worth of plants and he said he couldn't. Worst place to purchase a Christmas tree. The trees are overpriced. All of the trees are just sitting outside without given proper nutrients and water. Paid the additional fee to do the fresh cut and stand after my purchase. Tree is dead and taking up no water. Lady who answered the phone the next morning had the nerves to lie stating the tree just arrived earlier this week but prior to purchasing the Christmas tree was told the last shipment was received three weeks ago. Save your money and purchase a fake tree since the ones at Houston Garden Center are dead! It's a huge safety hazard and not worth placing your family in danger. I have spent about 5000 dollars a year, for countless years, at these stores. Last week I bought a bag of fertilizer for the grass. I took it home and opened it. The fertilizer was very wet inside. It was in balls and unspreadable. I took it back and they REFUSED TO EXCHANGE or REFUND MY MONEY!! The employees in the store know me as I am there so much but the manager told me no refunds or exchanges UNDER ANY CONDITIONS!!! I'll never go back!! read more

The variety in plants and seasonal vegetation items (such as pumpkins in October or Christmas trees in late fall) are great. However, pricing is excessive relative to competitors in the area. In reading the many reviews of Houston Garden Centers' numerous locations, I marvel at two things. First, the average rating of about 1.5 stars must be the lowest I've seen for any retailer of garden products. Secondly, I'm bewildered how so many people actually accomplished purchasing products there there turned out so poorly for them. I couldn't even get to the stage of making a purchase despite my best efforts to locate a garden center near me and wandering around the massive indoor and outdoor footprint for nearly an hour without so much as seeing a single soul. This location has an absolutely wonderful selection of plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, and landscaping materials. Hands down, best inventory I've seen anywhere. The problem is their self-service model. Not only are were there exactly zero persons staffed to help customers willing and able to make a purchase, but when I went indoors to explain that I needed help and advice selecting trees, the three people staffing the empty lines at the cash register couldn't have been more rude or LESS helpful. They in fact, told me that this location was indeed a "self-service" location and in fact, they have no "customer service" personnel roaming the location to assist customers with questions or advice. The person they indicated was the manager was perched in a little booth eating his lunch. A guy watering flowers did the best he could, but was absolutely unknowledgeable about anything and everything to do with anything that grows in the ground or in a planter. What a total and utter waste of my morning. Here's a pro-tip for shoppers: If you know exactly what you want and are willing to find it here yourself, the selection is fantastic. If you require any assistance or have any questions or customer service needs, go anywhere else. This is a business that was 100% self-service this morning during my visit. read more

This place takes a lot of my money. Not because they're necessarily expensive... if you shop when the plants are 1/2 off or more, that is. I never pay full price when I'm at this place, because it is well above my price limits when they aren't on sale. But just wait a few months and there will be a sale! Great selection, great quality of plants from what I'm bought. I do wish there were more staff that could help, because my own complaint is that it is HARD to find a certain plant among the many rows and thousands of plants. Some of the plants are labeled, but the majority are not, so again it's hard to find a specific plant if you aren't 100% sure what the leaves look like. So try to think of this as a treasure hunt and not as an afternoon in the sweltering Texas sun! Parking lot is awkward, you can either enter off the North Bound 601 loop feeder or by coming in through the parking lot off 18th street, past the Whataburger and BBQ place, and finally to the garden center. The parking spots aren't really "marked", but just park anywhere that might be a parking spot in front of all the mulch and grass. Just.. follow what the other cars are doing and you'll be fine. They have folks who will load the mulch and plants into your car if you need the help, just ask the cashier if the guys aren't standing around by the mulch when you exit. read more

So...my Mom is coming into town Columbus Day weekend. Some of you met her at The Harp during St. Patrick's Day and know how awesomely southern she is... :D. In order to prepare for her arrival, I needed some plants and flowers for my townhouse. I read an online ad that Houston Garden Centers was having a major sale, so I headed over there today. I had no expectations, but was pleasantly surprised. It's kind of like the Walmart of flowers and plants. Not the selection you would find at Buchanan's or River Oaks Plant House. But, what they do have is healthy and cheap. 3 gallon plants, like bougainvillea, was on sale for $6.50 each. Small palms and Chinese fans were $9.99. At Lowe's or Home Depot, these plants would be $20 minimum. All in all, I purchased a palm, two bougainvillea, some flowers, potting soil and some natural mosquito repellent for my yard for $50. They wouldn't accept my return within one hour, even though I was looking for an exchange for the right plant, not my money back. The Cashier I believe her name was Lorri was frustrated because the plant price was not visible from behind the register so she had to come from behind to scan the item. Walked in and there were two cashiers just standing there. Received NO acknowledgement or welcome. After spending an hour picking up plants and other supplies I asked if they had milkweed in stock. Cashier says "If we do, it's usually out there". I told her "I honestly don't know what I'm looking for". Cashier tells me "there are usually signs". I just walked away and started looking. She did come back and tell me where it is usually displayed. And then came back again to tell me that they did not have any. You have 2 cashiers working. The one nearest to the entrance is ringing EVERYONE up. The line isn't long but why should I be waiting to pay when you have 2 cashiers? The second cashier is just standing at her register, watching the other cashier working and watching us stand in line. That second cashier could've told any of us that she were available to help us. We noticed the second cashier and took the chance. She willingly rang us up. But, she rang us up with NO acknowledgement, no small talk, no thank you or anything. We're headed back to Buchanan's. No, we don't need to be entertained while shopping. But, at least acknowledge our presence and thank us for spending our hard earned money with you. read more
