AVOID THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. I brought in my mower in February to beat the spring rush. They told me it'd be around $120 to service it, even though the quoted price for a tune-up is $80. Okay, fine. They then called me back a week later and said it was going to be over $200. I could almost buy a new mower for that price, but I decided just to accept with it. For the next three weeks, I called every week to ask when it'd be ready, and every time I was told "next week." After five weeks I got sick of this and finally went back into the store in person. I was tired of being strung along every time I called over the phone, and I wanted a straight answer. Turns out, they hadn't done a single minute of work on my machine. They repeatedly lied to me over the phone, saying it was "almost ready" or would be ready "early next week." Totally dishonest. So I asked for my deposit back, and the initial response I got was, "that might not be possible." I was forced to get slightly rude and demand my money and my machine back from these liars. read more

A great place for yard tools, insect control, and yard fertilizers, with selections not found at Home Depot or Lowe's. It's worth a visit.

I live about 30 mins away but it was worth the drive. Took a pictures and even brought a sample of my grass to the store. They were able to give me advice and tips on what to get. I drive from north Houston time to time to purchase my garden soil, manure and fertilizer supplies. It is an hour drive each way. The price of the products are reasonable and many items are organic. Whenever, I was at the shop, there was an Asian looking lady at the counter who refused to smile assisted me few times. I wonder why people at the shop can be so unfriendly or even feel disturbed when I have questions in products selection or need help? However, my recent trip to the store was amazing because of "Twin" (friendly young lady) at the counter went out of her way to make me feel important and "Joe" (patient and strong young man) who helped with my garden manure and compost selections for my vegetable garden and carried and loaded into the car. I had called and spoke to Aaron the manager, on Friday and asked if they carried "coarse" perlite. Aaron told me yes they had it and it came in a 4 cubic foot bag along with the price. I got up Saturday morning and drove into Houston, (30 miles one way) specifically to buy the coarse perlite. I got there and Robert offered to help me. Robert was VERY nice and showed me the perlite they had. It wasn't even labeled "coarse" and when I looked at it, it was not coarse it was small regular size. I was shocked and very disappointed, especially since I had spoken to the manager and trusted what he said. Robert was helping me pick out some potting soil when I asked him if the manager was there and he said yes. We went inside and I asked Aaron if he was the manager named Aaron, he said yes. I explained to him that I had called yesterday and spoke to him about buying some coarse perlite. I handed him a sample of my coarse perlite that I had brought with me. He looked at it and said "that's not perlite". I said what?? Well, it is coarse perlite, which is what you told me you had and I drove 30 miles to come here and purchase it from you. He started raising his voice to me saying, "you can call our distribution office that is what they send us". I was so taken back that he could be that unprofessional and disrespectful! I told Aaron that I didn't want to talk to his distribution company that I had talked to him and trusted what he said to be true. He continued to raise his voice at me and say "that is what they send us and you can call them". I looked at him and told him I could not believe how rude he was being to me, a customer, and he turned around and walked off to the back. The other customers in the store were almost as mortified as I was, and to be honest, it seemed like the other workers there were embarrassed by Aarons behavior. At that time Robert was showing me details of the soil I wanted on the computer. Like I said, Robert was very helpful. I thanked him and then I asked Robert if I could talk to the owner and report this incident. Robert gave me a piece of paper and told me I could leave a note for the owner since he wasn't there yesterday. I will never, never go back to this place as long as Aaron is there. Aaron is the most unprofessional, rude person I have ever encountered as a manager. read more

I brought my Snapper push mower (purchased here in 2012) in at the end of July of 2017. When I walked into the store with my daughter, the gentleman at the counter was helping another customer. A different worker came in and asked to help a guy that came in AFTER me. I was standing right in front of the counter, maybe invisible because I'm a woman and a woman couldn't possibly need assistance with lawn equipment? The guys at the counter apologized after I candidly addressed that I had been skipped, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. My mower was brought in because it was not starting very well, and I discovered it had been run with low/no oil. I brought it in to get checked out to make sure it was ok. I got a call a couple days later that the engine was burnt up, and for no charge they could dispose of the lawn mower for me. I did not believe that it was toast, so I came, paid $20 or so bucks for their trouble, and picked it up. We own a second mower, so this one sat in our garage until recently. We put it back together (they gave it back to me disassembled) and added fresh oil, and it runs like new. I will not be returning to this place for lawn equipment, new purchase, or repair. read more

Outstanding customer service every time. Extensive collection of organic and synthetic goods for your lawn, garden and plants. Typically, equal or better pricing than big box stores with personalized attention. A small but good selection of ever changing flowers, herbs and veggies. It seems to change on a weekly basis and you never know what you'll find. I love when they have native plants/flowers available. The prices are reasonable enough that if I accidentally kill a plant, I don't feel too bad about it. read more

I had just returned from the store today. Really disappointed with the staff-on-duty who tried to help me in the back of the store where the trimmers and other yard maintenance machines were at. He seemed that he didn't want to help; maybe it's because I disrupted him and the person he was trying to call on his cell. His knowledge of the brand of trimmer I wanted to buy was zip. It has been a while since I've handled a trimmer, so I asked how do you start it. "Well, you have to buy it first," he said. "Yes," I said, "but I want to be shown how to start it." I'm going to stop my situation right there. Southwest Fertilizer has an awesome reputation; I know from my off-and-on patronage of their store. But, today was just a bad experience with one employee who could have asked for a co-worker with more knowledge than him. Seriously, it will won't hurt the ego. I brought a blower here because the ignition coil was out. Lifetime warranty part. Two months go by not a word. When I call them they tell me it's ready and that they have been calling me, which wasn't true. They tell me the blower has bad fuel in it which seemed highly unlikely since I use echo ethanol free 92 octane fuel. So I take it home and use it once. It works. The next day it doesn't. Back to the same old behavior. The ignition coil is still out. These guys fixed nothing and did nothing but waste my time and money on a bogus repair that wasn't a problem. It's a sad day when it's easier to buy a part on ebay than deal with incompetent businesses like this who just don't want to fix things right. Oh but they have a decent selection of fertilizers. read more

Good inventory of string trimmers, chainsaws, etc. The customer service is excellent and makes shopping here a delight ( compared to larger chains). I learned how to change the line and add a blade. We added the additional string trimmer parts, filled it with gas, tested it out, and walked away w confidence. There are two stores within Southwest Fertilizer, the gardening supplies store and the electric/gas gardening tools store. I rate the garden supplies section such as fertilizers, mulch, seeds a 5. I rate the electric/gas gardening tools shop a 1. I can find what I want and get help at the gardening supplies store but I have had bad experiences with getting getting my lawnmower repaired at the gardening tools shop. I hate it that the Southwest Fertilizer gardening store gets a bad rap because of the electric/gas Gardening Tools shop. A night and day difference. read more

This store appeared to boost the sale of a particular "green bag" fertilizer allowing a vendor to "dump" useless product on its customers. When I bought they had a pallet full; when I went back for what I was led to believe was a good product, their was none left and they advised they won't be carrying any more. I later learned that, after a reasonable time had elapsed, it yield little if any results, in terms of comparison to Scott's Weed and Feed. This product failed me; I would be very careful buying anything there. I don't plan to return - they can say they TOOK the last 60$ from me. Beware! read more

We also get most of our equipment repaired and serviced here as well. They are knowledgeable on plant issues, turf issues and we are pleased with the equipment repair team. I went purchase fertilizer and iron for my lawn. No customer service, all the help (5 or more) stood around visiting with each other. I had to ask for service. Then was told to move my car because it was 3 o'clock and they needed to close. I had no idea they closed at 3 on Sunday. After 30+ years of shopping there I won't be going back. read more
