Over the last several years I've: -Bought dozens of plants, pots, fertilizers, soil and accessories from them. -Brought multiple plants that I needed help diagnosing in to the Plant Bar and have received extremely helpful free advice. -Bothered staff with tons of questions about my carnivores, vines, trees, and native plants, many of which were unrelated to those I've bought at Buchanan's. Staff are always super helpful and if they can't answer your question, they'll find someone who can. That someone is often Martin, who has offered his expertise to me a ton of times and always has advice that is well-informed and clearly explained/tied to how it relates to the plants natural environment (which I find super helpful). I've also had very good experiences with the pre-packaged soils they create and offer for orchids, seedlings, etc. Don't sleep on the tropicoir. They also offer a ton of events to the local area, and have a free membership deal thing which is always a plus. All hail Buchanan's. All hail Martin. read more

I've been shopping at Buchanan's for about 6-7 years. They have a beautiful array of plants that are healthy and gorgeous. This particular day I brought my mom as she has been looking for a particular tree. They didn't have it however one of the employees said they'd probably have it in the spring and to check back. One of my favorite nurseries in the Heights. Flowers, trees, pots, herbs, gifts, etc - they have plenty of everything you may need for your nursery both indoor and outdoor varieties. They have a lot of staff there that can help you or answer any questions you may have. They do have seasonal items as well. Buchanan's is excellent. It's large, with lots of options for both outdoor and indoor gardening. I went here on the same day as a Home Depot garden center so here is my report. PRICES: Some items are actually cheaper here. Their herbs are $2.99 bucks a pop ($3.99 for organic) while Home Depot currently charges $4.78 for their herbs, believe it or not. Same with tiny succulents. $3.99 here while they are $5.48 at Home Depot. However, buying large indoor plants is much more expensive here. Large floor plants that will cost $40 at Home Depot are like $60-100 here. If I could afford it, I'd love to buy all my plants here but I can't justify spending that much. SELECTION: They also have a better indoor plant selection than HD, with certain rare plants. You will find most common plants here as well. I couldn't track down a spider plant at HD but found a nice array of them here. Herb selection is also undoubtedly better here than HD, although they did not have cilantro in stock. REWARDS: They have an easy-to-join rewards program that gives you points ($1 for every $30 spent) as well as member discounts and benefits. SERVICE: The service is much more personal here. Good luck tracking down someone to give you plant advice at HD. Here, I was able to get a friendly employee to offer multiple ideas on a resilient balcony plant. I had also previously called to inquire about a particular herb and received a kind and helpful reply. VERDICT: While I will likely keep buying my gardening accessories and large floor plants at stores with cheaper prices, I'll absolutely use Buchanan's for all my small/medium plant needs! read more

I stopped here to pick up a few plants for my daughters yard and when I got here I was trying to figure out how to bring some of these beautiful specimens back to Florida. It was super busy on the day I visited and quite frankly I was overwhelmed with the amount of interesting plants and the size of the store. Lucky for me I happened upon a very knowledgeable employee who gave me the total scoop on Jasmine. Who knew they came in so many varieties, blooming times and fragrance variables. Holy moley you can have beautiful Jasmine flowering all the time when you mix up your plants. I was told which ones are preferred by the hummingbird and butterflies and in which spots to plant them. Thank you to the tall person with the mask on with lovely hair as you were a wealth of knowledge and patience. This is a must visit if your looking for plants. read more

I'm new to gardening and joined a gardening group to get ideas/tips. I kept on hearing about Buchanan's so I proposed the idea to my sister, who also mentioned this place to me (from her neighbor)... and we made it a sister outing up to the Heights. We decided to hit two nurseries: Buchanan's and Nathan's, which is located about a 5 minute drive away, since we normally don't venture to the area all that often. For some background, I usually pop over to my local Home Depot (conveniently located across the street from my neighborhood) for any last minute needs. Buchanan's is a deceptively large nursery nestled in a neighborhood with its own lot... the lot that was completely full when we arrived at around 3 pm on a Saturday. Luckily, you can park along the street. There are SO MANY things to see! They've got plants for your herb/veggie garden, flowers, fruit (both common and exotic), an impressive amount of house plants and succulents... Plants are usually labeled with tips as well as a note on if they're native and what they're good for as well as which pollinators like them, if applicable. Prices sometimes need a bit more work to find on certain plants but it's there - if not, there's usually someone nearby to ask. Prices for herbs/veggies are pretty competitive! The indoor plants/succulents/cacti can be more, depending on the kind. I found a 4 inch pot succulent for $80!! BUT the variety you find is amazing (especially compared to HD). The staff is also super friendly and usually knowledgeable. Compared to Nathan's, the plants here are overall more expensive... but they don't have as many signs and easy to find employees there. So I guess you're also paying for service here. In addition to plants, they sell a multitude of pots, seeds, and supplies. I had a lot of fun here. We spent a long time browsing everything and I left with a taco succulent as a birthday gift to a friend and a milkweed plant for myself (I have more being grown from seed but they'll take a while to mature). A note: some milkweed there had a sizeable aphid population on them, so keep an eye out if your milkweed will be placed next to other plants at home. I'd honestly get more plants if money weren't an issue and I had room for more! I'm still trying to work the land to be able to plant more. It's slow going. Overall, a very pleasant experience and I definitely see myself coming back when I've got land for my pollinator garden ready. I can see why their parking lot was full and why so many are huge fans. If I lived closer, I'd be one of the regulars, even if it's just to browse. read more

We had such an amazing time going plant shopping during Memorial Day weekend. Plants have brought so much joy into our lives and we were thrilled to be able to visit one of the best nurseries in Houston! My husband really wanted a Venus fly trap for a long time so we walked in with an idea of what we were looking for. Buchanan's is huge!! They have a large assortment of both indoor and outdoor plants, pots, kind customer service, and plant tips for all kinds of plant parents. We ended up purchasing some succulents, another snake plant, Swiss cheese plant, and more. It was a fun day. Also hilarious, every corner we turned we kept saying "okay maybe one more." Cool neighborhood plant store. They have plenty of options for whatever plant you need. They also have small shops that are inside in the AC where they sell books, etc. Staff is pretty friendly and knowledgeable. I also thought the prices for the herbs were reasonable - can't speak for the rest of the plants though. They have cool rewards program - just ask the cashier to sign up and it's free. It has a more personal/boutique feel to it and the staff is always very knowledgeable - I definitely need help when choosing sometimes, and not killing it after I buy it. The product quality is second to none. Generally the cost is not much more than you'd find at the bigger shops in Houston. One of my favorite plant nurseries! Every one is very nice and helpful - any time I have a question or need assistance it's easy to find a friendly staff member and get the answers or help I need. The selection is usually robust and great, though the heat wave this summer took a toll on all the plant nurseries. I will say they are one of the priciest nurseries of the ones I frequent. And I usually avoid around December since they are highly targeted on Christmas trees (which by the way are ridiculously expensive) read more

There were different sections in case your looking for something specific. There was a greenhouse area for the indoor plants as well as an area with pet friendly plants which I thought was great. I'll keep it short. I've heard good things about this nursery. The variety of plants is vast. The quantity of the plants is expansive. The health of plants is pretty questionable. I bought two hillybilly tomato transplants here which never put out fruit. Only bloomed. All the peppers I bought growth was stunt. The borage died too quick. The only plant I bought here holding on strong is my lemon verbena. It does make good soothing tea. The service sucks. It seems like nobody who works on the floor knows anything about plants. It's baffling! There's no one in sight who assists you. I helped an elderly man find the cucumbers because I watched him flag down one of the workers who just ignored him. The plants are affordable, but they don't last long. The pottery is stupid expensive. Most planters have no drainage holes. The soil is expensive too. They have native plants, but you'd be better off going to Wabash. Oh the parking lot is pretty limited. read more

I felt like this place was so magical... My mom has had a rough year and wanted to do something a little different/special for Mother's Day. I thought to myself.. instead of giving her the usual flowers I will let her pick out her own! She had such an amazing time.. There were so many different types of plants.. never seen so many! Pretty limited parking - I was lucky enough to get a spot but I'm assuming on weekends particularly you'll likely have to park on the street. The space itself is HUGE they have a wide selection of many different types of plants and planters/pots. In particular they have small ceramic planters from Chive which I really love. These are cheaper than getting them directly from the website so I'd definitely recommend purchasing them here. 2" succulents are 2.99 each. Personally I felt a lot of them weren't that well cared for, but succulents are resilient and you'll be able to perk them up in no time. It's mosquito season and there are a lot here - be sure to wear protective clothing when you come here! Coming here is so soothing and relaxing. Buchanan's is a large shop with a huge variety of plants, plant accessories, yard decorations, pots, soil....you name it! The whole place is very well organized, the staff is always eager to help and is very friendly and knowledgeable. They even have an indoor section with a selection of nice, boutique type gifts. Only drawback here is that it is pricey, so I don't usually end up leaving with as much as I would want, but I think the beautiful setup, large selection, and premium staff merit the price on most of the items. read more

Today I had the pleasure of going to this wonderful plant nursery here in Houston in The Heights area. I kinda of new what I wanted before I walked in, but of course I had to take a look around at all the tropical plants, indoor house plants and their carnivorous plants. They didn't have the type of pitcher plant that I wanted, but they had some other cool ones I'd never seen before. They really pretty pricing but it's convenient and just the cutest place. Pricing is a bit confusing as Many plants aren't marked. Ends up there's an occasional color chart showing paper spikes in the pots to indicate pricing. It really wasn't clear for this first time visitor. You can easily drop a few hundred in a brief visit.
