Third time we have gone to both league city area locations and they do not have the grass they advertise to have on Thursdays. Also frustrating is the fact neither answer their phones so we can find out if they have grass before we drive all the way over. First time here and will say the quality and selections are very good. The prices compare well to Lowes and Home Depot as well. Like the other reviews I will say the staff is not friendly. An older lady cashier was a bit snarky when we asked a question. The cashier who checked us out was nice. Another cashier whom i asked a question just shook her head no when i asked if they had any orange Asian lily's. She had a bit of a deer in headlights look so not convinced she knew what said lily was. So if you know what you need and willing to wander around, not a bad place but assistance and friendliness is lacking unfortunately. read more

Houston Garden center is probably the only huge botanical garden in Houston, that has a lot of beautiful plants. The HGC always has deals, especially good for spring and winter gardens. Spring gardens since they always have a sale on the $.99 vegetable, Chinese vegetables and herbs, and regular herbs. They aren't Bonnie's plants that Home Depot, Walmart, or Lowe's sells, but they are specifically from HGC where they grow them. For the winter gardens, usually all the plants are 70% off. So good to stock up and plan ahead for next year's garden. The fruit trees are cheaper here, $20. I bought my mum a plum tree once and it has at first grown big and produced fruit, but my dad decided to kill it one day. Ah humbug!!! The plants here are in good shape compared to Walmart's selection. At least here they water and fertilize their babies here. However, the hibiscus all look weeping and withered, they may need a attention 24/7, however the ones here look a lot better than the ones at Home Depot. I don't like that they don't have a wide variety of vegetable and fruit plants, but the tomato and pepper selection is an abundance. The banana trees look kinda dead, even that they selling them here for $90+, thank goodness I bought mines for $10 elsewhere. This is location is a lot better than the one in Pasadena and Webster. I only come to this one because I know the plants will look alive, and the staff is so nice! The staff speak and understand English and they know the plants that they are selling. The ladies restroom was clean and smelled so fresh. Its located in the back of the center, in a brown building right next door to the office. The parking is plenty and if you buy some of plants, they give you a free black crate to hold your plants in while you are driving, so no mess in the car. Way better than Walmart and Home Depot. I don't come to HGC that often, but when I do, I come for the deals. However, Bonnie plants are my favorite to buy because I know they are reliable and catch easy with any soil. read more

This place is A-OK. You really need to shop around. Sometimes, their prices are really good and sometimes they are ridiculously expensive. You can save a lot of money if you know prices from other stores. It depends on what you are looking for. I will say that I have had horrible luck with EVERY azalea I have ever purchased here. I don't have the proverbial green thumb but I'm not totally worthless either. I can typically get things to grow. I'm obviously doing something wrong with these things or the azaleas here don't grow. I'm not sure which it is. However, I have managed to kill EVERY single azalea I have ever purchased here. Other plants/flowers I have purchased here do ok. TIP: If you follow Randy Lemmon's San Augustine grass fertilization schedule, they do have the Nitros Phos fertilizers that he recommends. The same rules above apply here. Sometimes, ACE will have it cheaper and sometimes HGC is less. Shop it. Typically, HGC won't price match so I have walked out before. Their loss. I went looking to get a Camellia. After looking around, I asked one of the cashiers if he knew where they were. He just pointed towards the front ad said there.....I just rolled my eyes and went that direction. After looking I still didn't find. I asked one of the guys in the guard shack. He pointed in south and told me last 3 rows....so we went and looked there....still couldn't find. Went back to the cahiers and asked of someone could walk me to them. I was thrown off by all the negative reviews before coming to this location, but I REALLY wanted to buy a snake plant for my room and figured I'd check it out anyway. My experience here wasn't above and beyond but like... it definitely wasn't as bad as some of the older reviews make it out to be. That being said, I knew exactly what plant I wanted, I found it very quickly with the other indoor plants, I put it in my basket, I bought it, and everything was straight forward. It seems like most of these older reviews are about customer service and employee knowledge. We asked one employee where the bamboo was and he pointed it out exactly. Most of the employees are taking care of plants, watering them, tending to them, and unloading trucks. I wouldn't expect everyone to know how to cure a sick plant or the scientific name of a plant you saw one time online that you want. I don't know, maybe my expectations are lower, but I'll visit this location again if I want to shop around for more plants! read more

This place has the worst customer service! I keep coming back, but after today, never again! We have spent a lot of money here through the years, and we need to replace most of our plants after the drought. The two women working the cash register did not offer to help, and when I asked for help, they were rude. When I asked for the manager, they said I had to find him. Do they not have a pager? He was just as rude and keep saying it was company policy not to mix and match colors. I told him I will never shop there again, and he smiled and said OK! It is such a shame to see such poor customer service. We went to buy 10 of the 10 gallon live oak trees which are pretty large. No one would help us. We asked if we had to bring them all up to the front register because they were too big to go under the eaves. We were told we had to bring all of them to the register and just to bring them all the way around the front where it's higher. I asked if there was another way or if they could scan them outside. I was told no just bring them up front. I tried explaining that the concrete/asphalt was unlevel and it was really difficult to push and she said she's just cashier. We had already asked about bring the tags up to scan. We explained that the carts weren't big enough and could only hold 3 trees when we have 10. We were told to get a bigger cart. The bigger cart held 4 tree but was a balancing act because you lift up to push. We were told to speak to Carlos the manager by one cashier who the other cashier had already referred to as "the guy in the booth" when asking about a larger cart. She acted like I was supposed to know Carlos and that the manager over "the whole place" was the guy in the booth checking receipts. There was a lot of attitude to be had, and she just kept saying "we're just cashiers". Carlos was not super helpful either. I explained again we are trying to buy 10 large tree and we need help. They are too big for the carts and the ground is to uneven for me to push them. He told me it's a "self service" place. He then said he could ask someone to help me but it's self service here. He then pointed at my husband and said but that guy is using the big cart. I said yeah that's my husband and we are trying but it's difficult. We decided not to get the trees at that point. I didn't feel like our business was appreciated in the least bit and I wasn't sure if they would help us load them into the truck since it's self service. We were hot, sweaty, and my foot was nasty from accidentally stepping into a puddle of warm dirty water. We've previously bought trees and other shrubs from here and never had the attitude we received today. In the past they have helped us load trees with out a problem. Lol how hard is it to place a coupon code or bar code on advertising?! After we purchased, we asked the cashier if we came back, if she was going to credit us $10. Oh, we have to void your items and start over. I think the simpler solution would be to just give us $10 off! That's just crazy talk though! Purchased a 8' tall Christmas tree from Houston Garden Centers near Baybrook Mall two weeks ago and this tree has to be thrown out! It has dropped so many needles we can not keep it in the house. We have purchased trees from this company for years and this time the tree is turning into a stick before our eyes. We have a bowl attachment and have watered/preserved it. I can literally hear the needles drop as I walk by. Their shipment of trees must have been cut in August! Trying to contact them is worthless, no one answers, voice mail is full. I went to the location of off Bay Area after researching online they are having a 70% off sale. Once I got there, there were banners that stated 70% off with no other writing on the front and back of building. You would think everything was 70% off unless notated otherwise well after 4 different types of flowers, 2 plants, a palm and 4 shrubs NONE were 70% off when I asked the cashier he stated in a rude manner there are signs by 70% plants I asked him to show me and he said I would have to find them myself. I went ahead and paid for the plants, and attempted to call a manager today no one answered the phone to the location. A recorder gives you the corporate number and no one answered that either. We bought 30 roses, a mix of double knockout and number of those with other colors, and planted them all 23rd February, 2018 under proper conditions and care. Unfortunately 10 of these did not survive, and when returning to store to ask for assistance and possibly incentive to purchase replacement of the 33% lack of survival rate, the manager only gave me a blank stare, stating it wasn't his problem. My husband and I bought our Christmas tree on December the 1st. For starts, trees (TREES) have gone up $10 since last year. We purchased a 6-7 foot tree for $100, which is ridiculous, but I just wanted to grab a tree and go. 2 weeks later, this tree is dead. I am 7 months pregnant and having to vacuum dead pine needles every day. I kid you not, you touch a branch and all of the needles fall off. I water it every other day, but clearly it was dead before we even got it home. Clearly these trees are cut down and sitting outside to rot and die, so they are already dead by the time they are purchased. I am livid with the quality and price of this tree. And worst of all, there's no "contact us" or any page to be able to file a complaint to the company or manager. They are obviously trying to get people to not complain. As I am new to gardening, I mistakenly bought 5 azaleas that I thought were the kind that bloomed spring to fall. On my way home, I called my plant knowledgeable mother in-law and told her of my purchase. She asked if I had purchased the "encore" azaleas? Since I live a ways from the garden center, I pulled into the first parking lot to check the labels. The azaleas didn't have planting instructions or any information other than the type and color. She told me to take them back and exchange them for the "encore" ones. I returned to the Houston Garden Center within an hour and a half of purchasing them and asked to exchange them for the correct plants. They told me they don't allow refunds or exchanges. Yes, it was my mistake, but not allowing an exchange when I returned within less than 2 hours, is very poor customer service. I would rate them a ZERO but that option is not available. Had a nice lady try to help but had only been there for 2 weeks. Passed me on to another employee who didn't speak English and the. To another employee who looked at my list and was very uneducated and unhelpful. I even asked for hearty low mantinence plants and he said they didn't have much. This is a garden center. I need plants and was made to feel unimportant and stupid for asking for help. No reason to come here if you need assistance finding specific. Bad business. I won't be back. read more

Bought an Xmas tree on 12/02/17 and it hasn't taken a drop of water since (2 weeks). It's dry and shedding needles obviously. Talked to manager at store, she said to send her pictures of the tree and she was going to see what she could do. Days later I had to call to follow up after no response and corporate has to tell me that the sale is final and that the manager will not offer a refund. No other plants in my garden have this, and I planted them in 3 separate flower beds so, they didn't get it from anything around them. And my existing milkweed doesn't have it! We live in Galveston and come to Houston Garden because we liked it. Came back with coupon and manager said that we could not do that. I've gone to the one in League City on and off for years. You need to know plants before you go. The folks there are never helpful and most " no habla ingles". ( don't speak English.) Not one person on the premises knows anything about plants and don't know where to locate where a plant you are asking about is located. I can't believe they have been in business for so many years! The thing they are good for are palm trees and spring vegetable plants. If you've done your research on a specific plant and have time to look for it, then not so bad. During the winter you can get very large pots for cheap. So personal choice but not for the novice gardener. read more

Here we go again. Bought my Christmas tree 12/14/2019 from the League City, TX location. Paid the extra $11.99 for the "fresh cut" and water basin & stand. I had water in the basin within an hour and a half of buying the tree. AND just like in 2017 when we bought our tree from HGC, the tree isn't drinking any water from the basin. Today is Tuesday 12/17/2019 and it's already dropping needles on the floor. I tried to call HGC corporate to complain, but the number "isn't in service or has been disconnected". Then tried to call the League City, TX location and nobody answers the phone. So I've already disputed the $100 charge with my card issuing bank. Looks like we have a replay going on from 2017 when I had to take the tree down BEFORE Christmas. NEVER AGAIN will I buy a Christmas tree from HGC. read more

We bought our Christmas tree here 4 days ago and it is already dropping a ton of needles. The tree won't soak up any water and will likely be a stick by Christmas.
