I was informed that they were charging me $50 to reschedule stating it was their "policy". Again, had no idea about their "policy" because I never received anything on their policy. Go to the Sra appointment and she tells me that I owe $50 for a cancelation! Nope! Stay away from this unethical place! The office is beautiful and very modern. The front staff was not very welcoming, but I checked in and sat down. I did have to wait about 20 minutes before being called back. I went in for a yearly skin check. The medical assistant that checked me in barely spoke to me and was very timid and quiet. I loved Megan, she is the PA that I was seen by. She was super friendly and welcoming. I did end up having to get a biopsy done on a mole, which was no big deal. I was caught off guard when I checked out that I owed $263. I already had paid the copay when I checked in. Again, Megan was great. Everything else, was meh.

It worked out well. As noted in one other review, new patients will not be able to book an appointment with Dr. Cindy Berthelot quickly, at least without emergency. Wait was about two months for new patients, but I did not have a pressing issue (nor did I push to squeeze me in). With most doctors appointments, they either called or texted reminders a day or two before. The HID center is behind the renown Tommy's restaurant in attached office/professional space (I say this because it's hard to see from the street, note there is plenty of parking in front). Front desk was very professional, waiting room and treatment area are very clean. This was during COVID times (I hope years from now that will be irrelevant) and they had signs at the door for expected behavior, sanitizer at the check in desk (behind plastic divider panel), and everyone wearing masks appropriately. I had a series of three appointments. Assessment, short surgery, then follow up (stiches removal). All my appointments were met promptly with no more waiting than expected (5-10 minutes in waiting room, note I was early each time, then 5-10 minutes in patient room before the doctor entered). My case was straight forward so nothing unique or challenging about the diagnosis. I felt like I was in the room under 30 minutes each time, even the surgery (which had local anesthetic and took about the time of a hair cut) and I was door to door from my office in under an hour. Dr. Berthelot was very forthright with treatment information, cost, and expectations of recovery. She even eye inspected unrelated moles around the area and let me know she saw nothing alarming. The wound was stitched and bandaged well. Recovery (2 week stitches, some limited activities as to not aggravate the wound) was by the book per her instructions. The office followed up with a phone call after the removal was sent to the lab and came back clean. Very professional and courteous overall. Everything went smoothly on the insurance (UHC) and topical prescription (at nearby CVS). UHC negotiated cost (as I had not met deductible) was well below what Dr. Berthelot had cited. I probably hadn't had the treatment sooner just due to not knowing a good place to get it. Now I do, and if the situation comes again I won't hesitate to reach out sooner and set up an appointment.

Dr. Katherine Johnson has absolutely no bedside manner whatsoever. She's a resident and honestly…read moreseemed completely overwhelmed and overloaded with patients. She was running around like she was trying to manage an understaffed nursing unit, and unfortunately that energy was brought into my appointment. I had a much better experience with Dr. Linfante. It sucks that he's so hard to get into, but honestly, that's because he's great. He actually makes you feel like you're a person sitting in front of him and not just another patient he needs to rush through. If you search "dermatologists rude Reddit," you'll find hundreds of threads about this. Sadly, it seems like a very common experience for dermatology patients. So many people talk about being medically shamed, dismissed, talked down to, and leaving their appointments crying in their cars because of how they were treated. I truly don't understand why empathy isn't a bigger part of healthcare. Patients come in already vulnerable. We're coming to you because something is wrong and because we need help. The last thing anyone should feel is like they're annoying the person who is supposed to be helping them. It's honestly sad that even with great health insurance, patients can still struggle to get basic compassion and respect. UTMB unfortunately has a reputation for this, and experiences like mine are why. The best way I can describe Dr. Katherine Johnson is patronizing, dismissive, and careless. My appointment was rushed, and she spent less than five minutes with me. I was trying to explain that I had pustules all over my face that looked infected and asked if there was any possibility it could be staph. My mom is a nurse practitioner and had also said it looked very similar to staph. Instead of explaining why she didn't think that was likely, Dr. Johnson responded, "WHAT bacteria are you talking about?!" The way she said it made me feel stupid for asking a completely reasonable question about my own health. What I'll never forget is the look and the feeling I walked away with. I was sitting there with severe cystic acne, hair loss, and something that was obviously affecting me mentally, and I felt like I was being viewed as a problem instead of a patient. I sat in my car crying after that appointment. I regretted even going. That's how strongly that interaction affected me. It actually took me a while to schedule another appointment because I didn't want to feel that way again. What she didn't know is that my excoriation disorder and trichotillomania didn't just come out of nowhere. I'm 34 years old and had never picked my skin or pulled my hair before. I had clear skin before pregnancy. These issues developed after experiencing significant trauma and everything my body went through afterward. Instead of feeling like I had a doctor who wanted to understand what was happening, I felt judged immediately because of my BFRBs. It felt like I was put into a category instead of actually being listened to. After my less than five-minute appointment, she cut me off before I could ask more questions about my treatment plan. She told me she would prescribe doxycycline, come back in two to three months, and that was basically it. She directed me toward the exit while talking to me in a way that made me feel like a child instead of an adult trying to advocate for herself. I left that appointment feeling defeated. My therapist actually encouraged me to report this experience to the ethics board because of how much it impacted me. Doctors don't have to be perfect. They don't have to have every answer. But they do need empathy. They need to remember there is an actual person sitting in front of them. Because of how dismissed I felt, I put off getting further treatment for my hair loss and severe cystic acne. During that time, everything got worse. I lost more hair, my acne became significantly worse, and my mental health declined to the point where I needed an emergency appointment with my therapist and had to contact my insurance company to find another provider. With conditions like excoriation disorder and trichotillomania, patients already carry so much shame. The last thing they need is to feel like their doctor looks down on them. These are real conditions. These are real people. Sometimes a five-minute appointment can leave a lasting impact. Unfortunately, mine did.
