You gotta love a mom and pop operation. I love discovering them and love those discoveries even more if they're any good. Hovies is an awesome place with good, simple food and friendly staff to boot. I went with a co-worker and it was packed. Since it wasn't quite noon I had a hankering for breakfast, but I was denied - our server apologized as they weren't serving breakfast that morning. I opted for a sandwich and fries, and it was tasty. Service was quick and friendly, and even though it's not a big establishment I was surprised how easily she served the entire floor. On top of it, there was only one line cook - he was rockin' it out. The place emptied out while we ate our entrees, and we got to talking to both of them. Our server is Vietnamese and was curious to my ethnicity. She nailed Filipino on her first try - good stuff! But talking with both of them solidified my idea that the Mendota area is very friendly. Just an update since my last review. I've tried going here twice now on a Sunday morning, and twice in a row they are not open at 8:30am as advertised (Google/Yelp and their own door). After this time we won't try again, which is unfortunate since their food is good, but last time we waited an extra 20 minutes and the family pulled up right as we were finally pulling away, but this time it was just a bit past 8:30 bit there wasnt even someone in there yet and no lights were on inside even by the kitchen area, so we assumed it would be the same situation. If you go here, just keep that in mind and maybe make sure it isn't around opening time, or be prepared to wait a while past opening time since, at least on a Sunday, they aren't good about opening on time. read more

Very small place in the middle of a strip center, but big atmosphere and flavor. The waitstaff are friendly and attentive, and my order was cooked perfectly. I really struggled with this one. The staff are very friendly. And despite how busy it was the time to get my food wasn't that bad. My biggest struggle was with my Denver omelette. It just didn't have flavor. I never thought I'd ever say this but there was way too much veggies and ham inside a very thin crêpe like egg covering. So it made you feel like you're eating a bowl of green peppers and onions with a truckload of ham and some cheese on it making it really watery. The hashbrowns were good lacked seasoning. Vickie and Bevis are so sweet and their family there have become family to us. We stopped at Hovie's for breakfast last weekend. We had eggs and pancakes and bacon and coffee. The food was ok but nothing great. There were two of us and the bill was close to $60. We were shocked at the high prices for a down and dirty diner. There was some egg item on the menu that was $22. The electric menu board said the cinnamon roll was $10. It seems like there was some price gouging. The coffee was $5.95 a cup and it was bad diner coffee. We really wanted to love it but we just couldn't. Sad. read more

Yelped this place up and was not disappointed. The owner waited on us herself, was very nice and kept our coffee until we tapped out. We abandoned our apartment while a painter was working a a few days and we landed at a motel in Eagan. The time was we'll invested because in looking for breakfast we cane across Hovies. It's a nondescript little place in an equally nondescript strip center. I expected a tolerable breakfast. Then my face lit up as did my appetite. Do they make corned beef hash? You can bet the rent they do. And they bring it in style. The mound of shredded spuds and shaved corned beef nearly fills the dinner platter and the flavors rush forth. No way I could eat it all in one sitting. I took eggs over medium and wheat toast, which I didn't need, but enjoyed. The dish was light on onion, which is fine with me. The coffee was flavorful and they kept it coming. I've seen not been back in MSP four years but this dish is the best corned beef hash I've enjoyed and I seek it out constantly. BEST BURGER EVER! I wasn't sure when we pulled up to this little hole in the wall if we should go in or yelp something else. Well, we braved it in the spirit of adventure and I am so glad we did! After reading a few Yelpers say this was a great breakfast spot, I hoped I'd found a place I could go for a decent omelet. Unfortunately, I haven't. I went in a couple weeks ago, and I was seated by a hostess, although the place was nearly empty. She brought me a glass of water and a menu. It took my waitress about five minutes to stop by to see if I was ready to order. Being alone and having decided I wanted an omelet before walking in, I was ready in about thirty seconds. I ordered the Denver omelet with hash browns (crispy, please), and an English muffin. Since the restaurant was basically empty, I asked if I could move from the counter to a table in order to have a chair with a backrest. The waitress had no objection, so I moved. I was never asked if I wanted any beverage other than the water I already had. The food arrived about 10 minutes later, and I was unimpressed. The toasted English muffin was okay. The hash browns were crispy in the middle, but burned on the edges. The worst however was the omelet. I couldn't believe how sweet it was! It was almost like having an omelet stuffed with candy. I don't know if they used sugar cured ham or what, but I couldn't eat more than about three bites. The waitress never stopped back to check if everything was okay, either. Very disappointed, and I won't be going back. read more

I woke up today jonesing for a cheesesteak sandwich. Come lunch time I still hadn't shaken the craving, so I did some internet research looking for a place close to work that might make a good cheesesteak. I saw Hovie's menu and reviews and thought I would give it a try. First impression on entering was that it was a nice little diner with plenty of counter seating. It was well lit and clean. I was greeted immediately and told I could order when ready. I ordered the cheesesteak with peppers, onions and mushrooms. It was priced at around $9.00. I got the order to go, and it was prepped in a reasonable amount of time. The smell hit me on the way back to work. I thought to myself: "Yep, That's what happy smells like!" The sandwich was tasty. There was some sweetness to it that I don't normally notice in a cheesesteak sandwich, but it wasn't a bad thing by any means. The textures and flavors blended together nicely. These people know what they're doing. The family-run hole-in-the-wall has great atmosphere. The staff hits the "just right" level of friendliness and service: smile, friendly, but not overly loud, chirpy, and overwhelming (they recognize that I haven't had any coffee yet). Speaking of coffee, it's good and again, the just-right level of service--unobtrusive, but my cup barely got finished before the waiter magically reappeared to refill it. I tried to go here for breakfast on my day off, but alas.....they stop serving breakfast at 10:45 on weekdays. So we ended up having lunch. The place wasn't very busy and the people working here were extremely friendly. I ended up getting the Philly Cheese Steak sub, and my counterpart got the BLT while we split an order of cheese curds. The cheese curds were fairly delicious, and the Philly Cheese Steak was pretty tasty. 3 stars for a fairly decent place to go for a fairly decent price nothing to make it stand out, but go here for a quick or diner like meal!! read more
