Stopped in for brunch on an early Saturday afternoon with friends. We had the short stack with fruit, a breakfast sandwich on sourdough, and I had a breakfast sandwich on the housemade biscuit. Our sandwiches and the pancakes were outstanding. You order at the counter and the food came out super quick. There is usually a huge line to get in on weekends (for a good reason), so we were lucky to get in right away. It's a very lively spot and usually super busy! I love Colossal! I have been here a few times and only once gotten something I didn't enjoy. The food is delicious and ranges from the biggest baked goods you've ever seen to a simple breakfast sandwich to delightfully balanced flavorful breakfasts. This location is a bit small and can be pretty popular at times but they've really stepped up their service lately. You order and at the counter before you are seated and it used to be seat yourself free for all but most recently a server was asking folks in line their party sizes and presenting seating options before you order so you would have a table reserved when you were ready to sit. I really liked this and thought it did wonders to streamline the sometimes chaotic customer line and seating situation. Less stressful for me and less stressful for them! We were able to order, find our reserved table outside, and receive our coffee and food all within 20 minutes of arriving. They serve Truestone coffee here which absolutely bangs, really really good, and I got a vanilla latte that had actual vanilla bean in it. Delectable! I got the Chorizo bowl which comes with 2 salsa that pack some pleasant heat and are complimented by a couple small slices of pineapple. My friends got the Bacon Egg and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich, and the special Guajillo Eggs Benedict both of which were also quite satisfying. The one item I did not enjoy was the Biscuits and Gravy, the gravy was just too sage heavy (as advertised) and I am not sure I liked the combo of pork and bison meat in it. Yum! My son had the Cowboy grilled cheese - it looked so fabulous, I tried that before I tried the chicken breast sandwich I ordered. This isn't much better than the grand Avenue location. The food is mediocre and Wayover priced. A basic breakfast runs $20 which is a lot. Both locations have a pancake that they call flappers. It's yeast based. And if you're looking for old-fashioned pancakes you'll be very disappointed. I've seen people send them back because they don't like them. The service is slow at best. Overall I won't be returning to either location. And I can't recommend them. read more

It felt like I was stepping into someone's home where I knew I would be taken care of as I enjoyed a homemade breakfast. I ordered the Korean Beef Bowl and added their homemade hot salsa, which was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the Biscuits and Gravy: Wild Mushroom, and it was very rich, creamy, and fresh. This place was on our Triple D tour. We ate breakfast here as it opens early. Got the pancakes with apple and Brie cheese. I was scared to try Brie but since Guy ate it so did I. The food was amazing but the hospitality was even better! We came with a party of 16 on a Sunday morning around 11am, and we were seated in about 20 minutes. The staff did everything they could to give us the largest tables and sit everyone comfortably, even offering some ppl who had finished their food and were chatting over coffee free cookies to move so we could sit. The owner was also there and was super sweet. Not sure if it's a Minnesota thing, but we couldn't stop talking about how nice the staff were, and it's not like they were doing it for more tip since we paid before at the counter. The food came out pretty quickly and once we started eating everyone was blown away. I got the lemon ricotta pancakes were so fluffy and perfect, and my friend loved her apple walnut brie pancakes too. Back in December, I had food catered from Colossal Cafe's Grand Avenue location. I loved everything that I had ordered, including an egg bake and dessert. Last month, I was in town for five days. I wanted to give this location on Como Avenue a try and say that I had visited both locations. I like this cafe's take-and-bake menu. You order by Wednesday and pick up your order on Thursday. You can also order by Friday and pick up on Saturday. Last December, I did the latter at the other location. Since I was leaving the Twin Cities on Sunday last month, I placed an order on Wednesday. I set my pickup date and time for Thursday at 4:30 pm. Eagan got dumped with heavy, wet snow on Wednesday night. By Thursday morning, the city got roughly six inches of snow. After working from my hotel room and calling it a day, I dug my rental car out of the snow and drove over to this cafe. I found that parking was much easier at this location. It could be because no one wanted to go anywhere thanks to the snow. I found a spot steps away from the cafe and walked in. I noticed that the chairs were upside down on the tables. Maybe it was another sign why I didn't have any issues. The place was technically closed. I had these nicest chat with a male staffer who had my order ready. This cafe closes at 2 pm, but has set up time after dine-in hours for pickup orders. I was the last order for the day. I'm so glad that I didn't make it 8 pm! He was the nicest person. He said that if I ever did a pickup on Saturdays, I'd also see him there. Nice! It's funny that I've never dined in. I should. He handed me my bag of goodies. I thanked him, wished him a great evening, and headed to my car. I got back to my hotel after having run a few errands. I placed everything in the fridge. I got the following items: - Handmade lemonade - 1 quart - Roasted potatoes and carrots - Egg bake - Meatloaf A couple of hours later, I had the handmade lemonade. It was excellent. It had a hint of sweetness, which is exactly how I like lemonade. The lemon flavour was so good. I would return for this drink alone. The egg bake was yummy. Think a western or Denver omelette, but with bacon and in a loaf. It was delicious. I am all for onions and bell peppers with bacon. The eggs were perfect. I got upgraded to a suite at the hotel. I had no idea that each suite had an oven. I had to use it. For lunch on Thursday, I heated up my veggies and meatloaf in the oven This meal was so good. The meatloaf was comforting. It was flavourful and had the perfect moisture. The roasted carrots and potatoes were the best side dish for the meatloaf. I loved this pairing. I got three meals out of them. It was nice to have a few meals taken care of during my trip. I definitely felt at home reheating my food in my kitchenette. Colossal Cafe was such a great find. I am now a fan of both locations. Very cool brunch spot in this charming neighborhood. It's popular at peak brunchtime hours, and because you line up at the cashier and order there before finding a table, busy periods might be more frustrating. But I like that model when it's not a long/slow line. There is some really good, interesting food; interesting enough that I've never had anything "standard" here. There is always an inventive special on the menu board, and they have things like Korean Beef Breakfast Burrittos and Scandinavian Frittatas with trout, potatos, and cream cheese. This last time I had an eggs benedict special that had corned beef, swiss cheese, and a "thousand island hollandaise". That was just okay. Again, you order at the cashier from a large, overwhelming menu board so it might be less obvious that you can get straightforward breakfast plates as well. They also have displayed baked goods you can take with you like croissants, scones, and macarons. I got some really good macarons once. The ambiance is very urban. It's got that look and that bustle. We stopped in for breakfast on Friday before Mother's Day and it was packed with a line out the door. You order at the counter and then find a seat, but with it being so busy, they had a "hostess" who would point you to a seat prior to ordering. This system worked great and helped the line move quickly and get people seated. We shared a cinnamon roll and I had the biscuits and gravy. The cinnamon roll was massive and covered in frosting. It was amazing. The biscuit and gravy was a little disappointing. The biscuit was large but so large, there wasn't enough gravy. The gravy was also thinner than I like it. It was loaded with pork and bison but lacked flavor/spice. Overall, I will definitely return but try something different or just get the cinnamon roll :). read more

There was a long line on a Sunday morning, but they were very efficient and seated people right after ordering at the counter. It has a fun brunch vibe and the food was great. We tried the Benedict special, which was fantastic and unique. The pancakes were very thick and fluffy-- we couldn't get through half of the stack because they were so filling. The brewed coffee was free self serve refills. The pastries and other food all looked delicious too, so we will be back to try more! This place is meh. First, they subject you to their political views. I go there to eat not get soap boxed. The bacon was of mildly adequate quality. Hash browns were under seasoned. Eggs fine, but how hard is that? Homemade biscuit looked delicious, but should be listed as a desiccant it was so dry. They ask for a tip up front, but you are completely ignored after that. They can't keep up with the coffee so people have to go up and ask that they bring more. A guy I heard called "the boss" later looked at me like I was very offensive to him when I first got to my seat. No hi welcome - just a look of near disgust. And it's really pricey for what you get. I stumbled upon this joint. I ordered the cardamom London fog and big ass cinnamon roll. Both were delightful!! The cinnamon roll was a bit too sweet for my liking. But the drink was perfect and I hadn't had anything like it before. The place was super packed, so make sure to make a reservation early or get there with time to wait. Come here to try cinnamon rolls the size of a football field - my goodness! The Como location has a very interesting setup where you order as you enter (don't worry the menu is plastered on huge boards) and the food is not cooked until you have a table. It's almost always a guarantee that you will wait for a table simply due to the size of the building and ordering process. None the less, the food is very good and the service during my past two visits has been quite complimentary. There is a sparkle and still water station to take advantage of as you wait. Some of my favorites include the biscuits, chai tea iced latte, and bowl of fresh fruit. Maybe one day I will muster up the energy to attempt the giant cinnamon roll. Rating this a 4 due to the order standing up cafeteria style and small space. Note: you can find free street parking behind the building on a local road. My friend came in with her baby and needed to set her stuff down before she ordered so she could access her wallet. The manager came over and said she could not claim a table until she ordered. She was not helped by staff and punished for trying to patron this establishment as a mother. If you like breakfast food and gigantic homemade biscuits, Colossal Cafe is the place for you! I've been here twice in the last couple weeks doing take-out during COVID and their service, quality and value is some of the best I've experienced. I absolutely love a good breakfast sandwich but it's even better when it has shaved smoked ham, swiss cheese, and egg inside a large, soft biscuit. Not to mention the value - Colossal Cafe's prices are very good and this is a locally-owned, neighborhood restaurant that everyone should support. The ham, swiss and hash brown omelette is another staple that I really like and more recently, I opted for the traditional breakfast which came with choice of eggs (scrambled for me!), breakfast meat (I went with maple turkey sausage links), hash brown, and a biscuit. It was a lot of food and I used leftovers for breakfast throughout the week. I almost forgot to mention the biscuits come with housemade strawberry jam which is also very good. They have reopened for indoor dining and I noticed the tables were well spaced for proper distancing. There's free on-street parking very close to the restaurant so if you are in the Como neighborhood, I highly recommend checking out Colossal Cafe - I'll be back really soon! read more

Went here for a birthday brunch with a group of 7 at about noon on a Saturday. Busy time!! The Grand location had an hour and a half wait and this one had maybe 15-20 minutes. You can't get on a waitlist here; you have to have your entire party present and order at the counter and they will put your food on hold until there is a table available. Fortunately we waited so long for the entire party to get there that by the time we were ordering they had tables ready! Great outdoor seating. I ordered the flippers with Brie and apples and walnuts - wow did not realize the big stack would be SO filling. I ate half of it and was so full. I wasn't a big fan of them, though. The syrup/sauce was too gritty and cinnamon-y for me, but my sister asked to go here specifically for these pancakes so it's definitely just a personal preference. This is my favourite Colossal Cafe on Como, I started eating Bess's Flappers when she was located at her original Colossal Cafe on 38th & Cedar. It was small inside, some outside seating, was very clean with warm colours and art; both her restaurant and Bess were Super-Duper! I went in early and got to know her, she was very smart and very funny, she decided to sell her restaurant and has moved to a coastal city in Texas, and opened up a B&B. I am a "Breakfast Hound" and love pancakes, I have a few special restaurants for breakfasts, but Colossal Cafe on Como is at the top of my list! The food is great, coffee is bold, and all the people who work there are "Awesomely Fabou!" Next time your hungry, head for Colossal on Como, you will leave as a happy camper with a full tummy and a smile! read more

I cannot day enough good things about Colossal. We recently moved to the area and this is such a little gem that we found and go to often. Where to begin? The staff are incredibly friendly and diligent. They are very customer service minded and always have a great recommendation to share. The food is delicious. AND very well priced which is tough to find for a brunch spot. We have had their seasonal Brie pancakes, an omelette, and multiple breakfast sandwiches and every single item is delicious and well worth what you pay. Not to mention their jam is maybe some of the best jam I have ever had. Definitely make sure you try!! Their breakfast sandwiches come on a choice of bread or even a biscuit. So tasty and large portions as well. As far as set ups go, we have only moved to town since Covid so I am not sure what the normal set up is. We have been ordering inside with masks and then taking a table number (they have these cute mini street signs for the area) to our table outside and they serve our food to our table. I am a fan of Colossal. When I have out of town guests, this is usually ones of the breakfast places I put on the list. The last time I visited, they had some ridiculously delicious pumpkin pancakes on special that had a cinnamon mascarpone which complemented it so well. The eggs and the bacon were spot on, but those pancakes were unreal. Plenty of coffee, which you serve yourself, and it's good. The wait time can be a bit much, but there's usually some stools at the counter available fairly quickly. Service is friendly and the street parking is convenient. read more
