This is an incredibly fun store to shop. Fantastic customer service! Come in for nothing, definitely leave with something.

We have an RV and I swear, we spend a good 30% of the time fixing 'stuff that breaks' and if we didn't have Ace, I don't know what we'd do. Yes you can go to the big box places, but you will not get the same level of service. We bring in some oddball part, explain the issue and they have 'just the thing' - and they know right where it is in the mess of aisles of items. We now have a toolkit that has a little bit of everything, but guaranteed on the next trip; there will be some weirdo thing that we need :) Bonus for this location is the softener salt out front so you can just back into your spot, pay and load up. Be careful: Shelf prices may not match what you pay at the register and they seem not to care. I was going to purchase a 6' length of rebar marked $10 on the shelf and it rung up at $15. 50% HIGHER! I pointed out the price difference and the cashiers were totally unconcerned saying outright the prices shown on the floor often no longer match what comes up on the register. They did not offer to sell me the item as marked or escalate to management for an accommodation. The attitude that is was 'ok' to mark one thing on the shelf and charge something different at the register is what prompted me to walk out the door leaving the rebar and the $170 hedge trimmer I'd planned to buy behind. Shame, I've always liked Howard's Ace but I can't abide not charging items as marked. What if I'd had a cartload of items and been overcharged on so many items it would be impossible to track standing at the register? I understand prices are increasing; this makes it more important than ever people understand what they will pay. The decision to buy is made when the price is understood inspecting the item, not standing at the cash register trying to double check the price you are being charged for each item against the memory of the price on the shelf that prompted you to put it in your cart. read more

Five Stars all the way! I have an old British motorcycle that I needed a key replacement for. Two weeks ago I stopped in to see if they had a blank that might match. The gentleman spent probably 45 minutes with me and then handed me a cut key that neither of us were sure was going to work. He told me that if it worked, great, but if it did not work Just to throw it away. I asked him if I could pay him for his time and he refused. Fast forward to today. I ordered the correct key blanks off of the Internet and walked back into the store with their key that did not work and the blanks and asked him if he could cut one of the blanks from my original key. A gentleman named Frankie took the job and cut the key. Again, when I asked what I could pay for it, he told me zero. Yes, you could go to a larger hardware store but no, there is nothing like doing business with people in your own neighborhood that care about you as a customer. So disappointed! After years of renting carpet cleaner from this location to clean a medical office we were charged $40 service fee upon return for "pet hair" in the machine. I live around the corner and always have great service when I am there. Last night I needed a new lock for my patio gate and had the pleasure of meeting Cowboy Chris. I was extremely stressed over this Chris was so kind and helped me choose the lock and then keyed it to work with my existing keys. I drove away and then panicked because I thought I couldn't get into my old lock as I thought I told him to throw the keys away. I drove back and they were closed already. He came and opened the door and explained to me I was ok and would be able to get into my house and what he did (which I still don't understand lol). This location is not the closest to me, but I drive to that store because of the friendliness, and the expertise of some of their staff members. I am not a DIY kind of girl, so when I met Tyler who is in charge of the paint department, I struck gold. He has hands-on experience in painting, repurposing, and reconditioning furniture, in addition to a practical understanding of which product is best for the type of project you are working on. This is my Go-to Propane tank exchange & everyday HW needs store. In terms of the mask review peeps - Whether you use them or not is up to the Business owners to enforce their rules & this business clearly is enforcing masks, as it says on the front doors. This isn't my "home" store but that's where my online order was delivered. Unless I missed a sign to direct me to the key-making area at the back of the shop, there should be directions to head back for online orders instead of waiting in line at the front register. While I waited for someone to acknowledge me at the key-making counter, I witnessed two ACE employees behind the counter helping a customer. Apparently, his order had some issues but it was getting resolved. The male employee, Chris, apologized to the customer about the issue and explained that the cashiers messed up the order. Checked ACE website for product, and it shows that Howard's ACE has the product. I should have called, but anyway I drove from Gilbert up to North Phoenix. When I arrived at the store, a nice lady with red ACE vest on helped me to the isle and we searched for the product, and there was no inventory, I mentioned that the ACE website said that there was inventory, and if she could double check, and she did but there was none to be found,. Then as she was explaining options for ordering, and delivery, a rude ACE employee interrupted us mid sentence, and ordered her to go take care of some customers at the register. She apologized and quickly ran off. The rude older man started to walk away, and I said excuse me, I still have some questions. He walked over and said that that they had no stock. I mentioned that I looked up the part on ACE website and they directed me to his store, and he said, well we have no stock. I asked him if he could call around to other ACE stores to check, and he said no that they were independent and not affiliated with other stores, but that we could order on from him. I declined and said I would order one closer to home, or off the internet. I try to give my money to local businesses, and even go out of my way to drive across Phoenix to do so.... I should have called ahead.... and avoided the whole situation. Howards' maybe you could find a way to better integrate your inventory control system with your franchise name "ACE" or maybe you should request that ACE remove you from their web listing because you are "independent". read more

Whachya need, they got! I recently completed a project that required about a million trips to the hardware store. There is an Ace Hardware that is about 5 miles closer, but I was forced to come to this one regularly due to the other Ace being out of stuff. I have been coming to this Ace for a couple years now for FFL transfers, but normally went to the other ace out of convenience.....until now. This Ace has now become my first choice because they were never out of anything I needed. Small screws, odds and ends, gizmos and gadgets. This Ace has not let me down. Their staff is always nice and willing to help too, which makes for a great experience. Their location is very easy to find and access from either Indian School Rd or 32nd street and parking is plentiful! Never once had an employee be rude or even heard of one being rude. the only issues I have are that their website sucks and many of the younger employees can't find things without the help of a computer or their phone. prices can be high on some items but otherwise generally pretty good. read more

Uhg, I want to so badly love this store because it has been in this exact location since I was a little girl, despite all of the shopping center remodels! But the past few times that we've been in, the items that we were looking to buy were SO much more expensive than other stores like Home Depot or Costco. Today I popped in for 9 volt batteries and a pack of 4 was $15! We needed a bunch to replace all of our smoke detectors and I thought this was a little steep. Sure enough, they were half the price at Costco. They were also out of the other few items that we needed so I left empty handed. This has been the best hardware store in the city for years. Here is another story why: On Christmas Eve I had picked up my elderly aunt from across town to bring her for dinner. When I loaded her walker I realized it was is missing a nut and bolt and was not safe for her. I stopped at Ace one hour before closing and an employee that I had not met before (John, I think) got on his knees to investigate the walker. After several minutes of trying different combinations of nuts and bolts, he located a good fit and then retrieved a wrench to install. When it was all done, he apologized the nut and bolt were metallic in color and did not match the black of the others. :-) I thanked him and wished him a Merry Christmas. Cost: $.50. This is the best hardware store in the Valley Every visit we are welcomed and approached by someone in less than 45 seconds. The person you need to see is SCOTT! This guy will help you find a solution no matter what the situation is. If you see him working with another customer just be patient and wait for his amazing advice.
